The best of the best.......2007-09-04
THis book is the most helpfull i ever seen. You buy this, and you need no other book to draw celtic knots.
You start with no knowledge and you really can make extraordinery things after a feel training. Its really works.
I strongly recommend.
Lots of ideas.......2006-03-20
This book was just what I needed. It has lots of ideas and how to make them.
Celti Knotwork Explained?.......2003-12-31
Acknowledging the complexities of this book's approach to Celtic Knotwork, Iain Bain, George Bain's son, has published a much more approachable introduction in his Celtic Knotwork, Constable, London 1986. It was reprinted last in 1992 but is unfortunately out of print. Used copies are available and I would stongly recommend Iain Bain's book as a most helpful place to begin. The senior Bain's book is however an informative reference, a far cry above the usual "picture book for colouring" approach.
Perfect addition to Book of Kells, Lindisfarne Gospel.......2003-05-15
How Bain has managed to come up with this method is beyond me, but God bless him for it! I have used his methods for creating cross stitch patterns, a complicated matter but well worth the results.
Good intro to Celtic Art.......2003-02-09
I can't add much more than the last previewer. But it is a good introduction to Celtic Art and patterns, plus he covers its history and shows you how to even difficult patterns. Drawing Celtic Artwork is not easy, a gifted artist and craftsman Bain makes it look easy but its not. Howeverf if you practice the basic patterns you can get pretty good at it in a reasonable period of time. I have several of Aidan Meehan's books and this one is by far the best for beginners imho. Use Meehans works when you can replicate a good many of the patterns found here.
It is also a fine resource for the more elaborate patterns which are not covered very well in other works. Many of these patterns can be transferred to leather, clay etc, you name it.
Overall if you only get one book on Celtic Art get this one and with a bit of practice your effort will be rewarded.

Best-selling author Alice Starmore combines style, practicality, and the mystery of the Celtic spirit in this gorgeous collection of knitwear designs.
Customer Reviews:
So many Sweaters, So Little Time.......2007-09-30
Alice Starmore is truly a design genius. Don't be fooled by the visual complexity and subtlety of these designs. With few exception, they are all knit with two strands of yarn at a time. She uses between 6 and 20+ various shades in various color palettes and makes tapestry rich sweaters a knockout. Follow her color recommendations or design your own, you won't be disappointed in the results. Stranded on a desert island, I would take this book, my needles and a boatload of yarn!
Knit something glorious.......2007-04-25
I actually have two copies of this book. The first was purchased more than 15 years ago, and is a much loved / slightly tattered hardcover. I recently received the paperback version as a gift to replace my much-used original.
I love patterns that have either lots of colorwork, or lots of texture. This is why I learned to knit in the first place. This book is heavily skewed towards color work. I have been making the sweaters from this book for various relatives for many years, and am currently working on a sweater full of celtic creatures for my daughter. You can also transpose some of the designs, such as the entwined dragons from the back of a child's sweater onto other projects as long as you keep the stitches even on either side.
If you look at the guages, you can substitute available yarns for the yarns listed in the book. Consider the colors and yarn selections in the photographs as "suggestions" and you will free yourself to make some personalized choices.
Warning: In the years since this book was published, some of the patterns have become dated. This is mostly due to the shape of the sweaters and ever changing fashion trends.
Have I mentioned that I love this book? I can't imagine not having it to reach for when the urge to knit something glorious strikes.
Beautiful book -- buy it while you can!.......2007-02-26
This is my first Alice Starmore book. I heard about her on a knitting forum site. I believe this is the only Alice Starmore book that is still in print. It is a lovely book and lives up to the high expectations raised about Alice Starmore designs on the knitting site. The beautiful sweaters are photographed on models in breathtaking natural scenery. It's a knitting book and travel book under one cover.
Her designs are based on traditional motifs seen on Irish jewelry and in illustrations in old Irish manuscripts. The colors are either beautifully subtle or strikingly bold.
I have found out why this is the only one of her books in print. There is a controversy surrounding Alice and her daughter Jade (which I will not attempt to explain) which explains why her other books will probably never be reprinted and no new books of knitting designs will be written by her. So buy this beautiful Alice Starmore book for a great price from Amazon while you still can!
A visual feast!.......2006-03-24
I got this book on a whim, not knowing much about what patterns I'd find within. When it arrived in the mail, I pored over all the beautiful things inside and then brought it to my knitting class that night. My knitting friends are all jealous and have found patterns they want to make too - but the work is pretty advanced. There are some lovely color patterns, some cable ones - just gorgeous - but not for the faint of heart. I like that there are some for children as well. The photos are stunningly beautiful and I know I'll get a lot of use out of this book.
A very good Alice Starmore book still in print.......2006-03-21
Alice Starmore is a very artistic and creative designer. Her out of print titles go for prices of $100-$700 on ebay, so order ths one while it is in print! Beatiful pictures and sweater designs with many shaded colors.

Blue Bible!.......2007-09-08
Soft leather cover and size make this blue bible a comfortable hold. Instead of being outlined with the regular gold... the silver outline makes this Bible look pretty neat. The only thing I would warn buyers is that the cross and "frame" on the leather is lighter than I had expected. It is more of a dark blue rather than a black. Other than that this bible has met more than my expectations.
When shopping for this Bible I found that online prices were less expensive than my local Christian bookstore.
Quality leather, binding, and paper.......2007-06-08
A gift to my wife, the quality is pretty impressive for the price. Red-letter edition, and the ESV is a recommended translation (not as fluid as NIV, but more so than the NASB to which it is most often compared).
ESV Thinline Bible, TruTone, Royal Blue, Celtic Cross Design, Red Letter Text.......2006-11-04
This bible is an extremely good value, good quality for the money. The type (print) is clear and very readable. I haven't read every word to compare it for accuracy, but so far what I have compared to the KJV is very accurate. Any place where there was no need to change the text for clarity in 21st century English it reads right along with the original KJV. I have detected no corruption. I find this bible very helpful in clarifying the more obscure verses and I use it daily. The compact size makes is easy to take along with me anywhere I go. I highly recommend this bible.

Stunning!.......2007-01-11
This quilt book is so stunning with all the examples. Not only that, but being a beginner, this books spells things out pretty well. I did go get the other book she recommends as well. It's called Hand Applique. But that's if you want to know how to do Hand Apllique, and I wouldn't say that it deserves 5 stars.
One book that any Quilter would like to have in their library.......2006-02-23
Great source of information and inspiration for Quilters looking to think outside the box and or learn basic techniques in creating quilts with a Celtic theme.
Instructions are easy to follow and organized with easy tips to assist the Quilter in planning out and completing the project
.
My first attempt pleased even myself!.......2005-11-17
I am my own worst critic, but my first attempt produced a lovely little piece of Celtic quilting that I am proud of. There are many great tips scattered throughout the book, including basic machine quilting tips that help take the intimidation factor out of the process.
I am now in the process of planning another larger project and can't wait to get started!
Beautiful designs.......2005-09-01
I admit that I haven't made a Celtic quilt (yet) but it's on my list of quilts to do after reading this book. The author gives you all of the help you'd need create a beautiful Celtic quilt using bias bars and making your own bias tubes. I'm thinking of purchasing a Celtic font (available online) to make my own patterns. I've seen Celtic quilts in quilt shows and they always seem to steal the show.
what an insperation!.......2002-01-31
This book made me really want to learn more about celtic quilting. I can't wait to make more and more. Good directions and examples. Lot's of inspiring photos. A must for a true historic quilter.

Book Description
Scottish and Irish designs have long been a rich source of inspiration for knitters. Beautiful earthy colors and styles that range from simple chunky sweaters to intri-cate Fair Isles offer endless ideas. Now, in this marvelous new collection, leading knitwear designer Debbie Bliss presents more than 25 original Celtic-inspired de-signs for the entire family. For adults, there are rugged fishermen's sweaters, car-digans in delicate hues of heather and moss, a cabled tweed jacket, and a luxurious cashmere wrap. For infants and children, the adorable designs include Fair Isle jackets, socks, berets, and throws and a lace-and-cable sweater. With every de-sign illustrated in atmospheric color photos, Celtic Knits is another welcome addi-tion to the Debbie Bliss knitwear series. Debbie Bliss, who now designs clothing for Baby Gap, is the author of many successful books, including How to Knit, Great Knits for Kids, Family Knits, Bright Knits for Kids, and Classic Knits for Kids.
Customer Reviews:
not inspirational.......2002-04-30
This book is geared more towards the beginner, as the variety and patterns in this book are not really inspirational to more experienced knitters. This is quite a let down of a book, although there are a few pieces I may someday knit.
Celtic? Nah.......2002-01-08
What a lovely book this is, full of happy blond children lavishly photographed amidst charmingly rustic settings. However, the knitwear they're modeling, although clean-lined and attractive, isn't "Celtic" at all. Yes, there is one Aran-ish tunic in the collection, but unless you are a thirteen-year-old, it won't fit you. A terrific disappointment!
A Little Bland.......2001-09-17
As is true for all of Debbie Bliss' books, Celtic Knits contains beautiful photos and an attractive, accessible layout. Celtic Knits has a pretty good variety of patterns - mostly adults, but also a few child and baby patterns. Be warned, however, that the women's patterns seem to run on the small side; you might have to adapt if you want to make other sizes.
Unfortunately, many of the patterns seem either (a) like a great many other patterns you've seen lately, or (b) nice, but not particularly Celtic. I think the theory is that the colors used in the designs are supposed to have a Celtic 'mood,' but I just don't see it. Debbie Bliss' usual creative spark seems somewhat absent from this book.
The one pattern that really stands out is the Aran long-line tunic. This sweater, to me, at least, strikes a charming balance between traditional Aran knitting and a contemporary feel. The color, a sort of mauve-y rose, and the long shaping combine for a feminine, cuddly appeal.
With few other exceptions, the rest of the designs are unremarkable, if elegant and beautifully made. They would be perfectly at home under any title other than Celtic Knits. In sum, if you're looking for unique Aran and Fair Isle designs, there are better resources out there (e.g., Alice Starmore).
Again, a beautiful book from Debbie Bliss........2000-10-28
I keep reviewing books by Debbie Bliss. And I find myself saying the same things over and over. This book is no exception. The pictures are just lovely. Debbie Bliss's knitting books can serve as coffee table books for knitters. The layout is just delightful to look at. The patterns are for classic items that can be worn for years. However, having yet to knit anything from this particular book, I can't say anything about the difficulty of the patterns themselves. I would expect that they are similar to other books by this author. I generally make sure that I go over a Debbie Bliss pattern more than once before I start knitting. Often, having an experienced knitter look at it can be useful as well. However, whether you are a novice or an experienced knitter, you will enjoy looking at this book, even if you never knit from it. We have watched Debbie Bliss's kids grow up in the pages of her books--they are two of her models for the clothing found in this book again. Which brings me to one of the other joys of a Debbie Bliss book. The knitted items are pictured being worn by real people, not fashion models. I think it really helps you to picture the finished item on a normal person in a normal pose. Not a model posed to make the sweater look as nice as possible, while the person wearing it is contorted into some very funny stance!
Mainly for adults, less creative than her children's books.......2000-04-28
Bliss' book contains more sweater patterns for adults than for children. The children's sweaters lack the charm of Bliss' childrens books, which are fantastic, so if you are searching for a child's pattern, look at her other books -- particularly her books that contain Aran designs, which are quite unique and simple to knit, although all her children's books are equally wonderful. As far as designs for adults in Celtic Knits, I was both pleased and disappointed. The designs are nice and some are fairly simple to knit. One of the pullover Arans is actually quite splendid. But on the whole they aren't as Celtic as I'd expected -- there are a few fair isles (for children) that are rather plain in comparison to other Bliss designs. The sweaters on the whole are less Celtic and more English -- more like reading a Rowan knitting magazine, so they are very nice but not what you might expect. Also, if you are expecting these to be more or less adult versions of her children's designs, you'll also be disappointed. Bliss' style for adults is much less intricate and unique. The book itself is of high quality. The patterns are very detailed, although diagrams and measurements are missing, which makes it more difficult to be certain you are knitting to size or to adjust your gauge (I wish publishers would realize this -- they are giving those of us who rely on measurements user-unfriendly books). Photos of the sweaters, like in many of Bliss' books, are over-posed -- you see a stylish photo of the model and the background, but have very little chance of actually seeing what the sweater really looks like, and if you knit like I do, detailed instructions don't always reproduce what you see in the photo, so I at least would like to have had better pictures so I could knit directly from them and not struggle with the instructions. Bliss uses a variety of yarns, from Jaeger or Rowan: wool, cotton, and chenille. Thus there is something here for all seasons. She also includes a few men's sweaters. Despite some drawbacks, this is a nice addition to a knitter's library -- a quality book with a variety of sweater designs to satisfy any taste. If you are new to Bliss' designs, please do look into her children's books. I purchased Classic Knits for Kids first and fell in love with them, and they can be resized for adults with some effort -- but it's worth it. Bliss is one of the best British designers -- attractive, durable, and charming sweaters.
Book Description
An indispensable, step-by-step guide to drawing a wide variety of Celtic designs - for artists and crafters working in all media.
Starting with an illustrated introduction to the Celts and the development of Celtic design, the author places the book's designs into their historical context.
The following chapters examine each of the main Celtic patterns in turn: knots, spirals, key patterns, animals and beasts, and Celtic lettering. Each chapter opens with a large colour illustration to inspire readers in ways of incorporating the design into their own work. This is followed by a short introduction to the range of patterns that fall into this design category, along with photos of Celtic artefacts. The rest of the chapter consists of 16 design pages, each containing a specially commissioned step-by-step artwork for readers to follow. Beautiful to look at, and exquisitely executed in themselves, each artwork has been carefully constructed so that readers can follow its build up from start to finish with no possibility of error. The chapter on Celtic lettering contains a specially commissioned double-page artwork of the Celtic alphabet for readers to copy, and is followed by instructions on how to embellish each of the letter forms in Celtic styles.

MARAVILLOSO LIBRO Y UNA GRAN VARIEDAD DE DISEÑOS PARA CREAR UNA SUPER OBRA DE ARTE
A great addition to Celtic design!!.......2004-01-03
This is a handsome volume with not just exciting step by step guides to drawing Celtic designs but also some wonderful photographs of carvings, illustrated manuscripts, etc., and fascinating text by David James of the history of the Celts and their art. I've never seen a book quite like this - it really gives one an incentive to try the knots, spirals, birds and other designs. Vitor Gonzalez' art work is always magnificent.

The introduction gives a brief history of the Celts and an explanation of the birth and development of their artistic style with particular relation to cross designs.

101 Celtic Crosses.......2007-09-07
101 beautiful colored PLUS b/w Celtic crosses suitable for tracing and enlarging. Images are small, approx 4"-5" tall, but lovely.
What a great reference! .......2005-07-06
Courtney's Art is just fantastic. This book, as well as all of his other works that I have picked up, is well worth owning. Mr. Davis's designs are inspired and unique. Anyone interested in Celtic art or design should own this book.
Book Description
Intriguing archive of 96 black-and-white designs features the sinuous interlacements, stylized mythical creatures, abstracts, geometrics, and other elements that give Celtic art its unique distinction. Clear, crisp, professionally drawn motifs will lend themselves to a host of art and craft purposes. Included disc contains all designs in book.
Customer Reviews:
Good quality, but redundant.......2005-06-08
The quality of the art in this collection is great, however the majority of the items are animal based. There are few plain geometric patterns and nothing usable as borders, etc. There is another Dover collection that specifically includes Celtic borders. Most of Dover's collections give you a fairly wide selection, but this one is stuck on a theme and is also a bit thin. Only 96 designs! If you are looking for animal motifs in your Celtic clipart, this is the collection for you! If you are looking for anything else, look elsewhere.
Exquisite and useful!.......2002-07-16
I love the fact that you can resize the designs. I've used several as the basis of embroidery patterns on cloaks and tunics. They would be great for everything from newsletters to tattoo designs. From borders to circles to neckpieces to animals, this is a great reference that you will use over and over.
THIS IS COOL.......2002-01-05
The designs in this book are awesome from the animals to the knots I even used one of them for a tatto, it's also great for flyers.
Great for computer applications!.......2000-02-24
This book comes with each design duplicated in a number of formats (gif, jpg, bmp and Mac formats as well!) on a cd rom, which makes this huge clipart collection perfect for graphic design on any computer. About 75% of the designs are animals, ranging from peacocks, a seahorse, to a duck, otter, pelican and fish; but there are also a few spirals, knotwork and key patterns. I have done a few tattoos and created a number of web graphics with the collection, and gotten alot of enjoyment and inspiration from them, and reccomend it to anyone looking for intricate Celtic art (especially zoomorphic desigs), that they can use freely, without worry of Copyright (because there is none, other than a limit on the # of images per publication).

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-01-29
I bought this book looking for inspiration for a Celtic or Viking tattoo design. Hearing what a revered artist Courtney Davis was, I thought I couldn't go wrong with this book. Unfortunately, all the drawings were incredibly unsophisticated and they remind me more of an amateur's work (perhaps at copying Courtney Davis). All of the designs were in black and white and many of them were just plain - and I *do* mean plain - knotwork patterns better suited to tablecloths than tattoos. There is none of the beautiful intricacy you find in real Celtic art - almost all of the patterns have huge unfilled or "blackened" spaces.
If you're looking for inspiration in Celtic design, buy a reproduction of the Book of Kells. I know that will put the shoddiness of this work to light. I suspect this was just a cheap attempt at making money and that Courtney himself does not prize this work.
The good news is - it's cheap, so it wasn't a total waste.
Excellent resource for artistic reference........2005-08-13
I purchased this book as an artistic tool. In the process of ultimately developing my own designs in this stylistic vein, I wanted to be able to refer to line art renderings of actual ancient Celtic, Anglo-Saxon, and Nordic designs. This book has proved to be an excellent resource. The representations featured here make up a top-notch selection, and I appreciate the basic geographic and chronological labels for each piece. The renderings are nicely detailed, but they're not so intricate as to prove impossible to mimic in a sketch book.
Christianized Celtic design.......2002-07-20
Most of the designs in CELTIC AND OLD NORSE DESIGNS by Courtney Davis appear to have been copied from items found in and around archelogical sites that date from around 1,000 B.C.E. to about 1,000 C.E., now housed in museums. Davis does not inform the reader of the specific aspects of these pieces. In fact, her text is almost non-existent.
Some of the items shown appear to match items that precede Roman times, others seem to coincide with Roman and early Christian times, and others are very similar to items discoved in Anglo-Saxon tombs like Sutton Hoo, or Viking sites in Scandanavia and are thus contemporary with the early Middle Ages. Some designs are found on spoons, horse collars, or weather vanes, while others are taken from church sculpture or graveyard crosses.
As the elements shown are not categoried by historical period, or referenced or sourced, this is not the scholarly work that I hoped it might be. However, if you don't care it does not matter. I will be using the book for children's artwork projects this summer (i.e. coloring books).
a good resource for charted scrollwork.......2002-03-23
This is a great resourse for those looking for charted scrollwork, knotwork and other Celtic or Norse motifs.
The Best in the Dover Group.......2001-07-08
STRONGLY recommend this book as THE best source for Norse type designs! Bold and true, this book is highly usable to impart the Nordic of Old flavor to your work!
