Book Description
Master of Form: Santiago Calatrava's exquisite fusion of architecture, art and engineering (Complete Works 1979-2007)
Santiago Calatrava is not only one of the world's most prominent architects, but also an engineer and an artist. With recent projects such as the stadiums for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens or the new railway station in Liège, Belgium, he has reached a level of undeniable notoriety in Europe and continues to move further ahead. The only architect ever to have his work exhibited at both the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, he is currently working on the main transportation hub for Ground Zero in Manhattan as well as the tallest building in the United States: the 160-story Chicago Spire Tower. Winner of the 2005 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal as well as numerous other prestigious awards, Calatrava is one of the greatest and most innovative architects alive.
Customer Reviews:
Great book, fast shipping, full satisfaction.......2007-09-10
This book has everything you need to know about this amazing architect.
maybe it lacks floor plans, other than that the study sketches reveals a lot of informations on the buildings.
SINGULAR CALATRAVA.......2007-06-11
I could not agree more with the reviewer below that stated this book is not the end all be all, but for admirers of Calatrava's work, it would be a must have...uh if you have the requisite trust fund that is..this book is SERIOUSLY overpriced, even at 500 plus pages it's just not worth this much bank. The images are quite good and the text interesting though not indepth. I was most intersted in Calatrava's transit station in lower Manhattan, I was a bit disappointed more text and imagery was not given to that. All and all, just really for affluent ardent Calatrava fans.
A huge coffee table book.......2007-06-01
Santiago Calatrava is an astounding architect, engineer and artist. His work has revitalized the organic tradition of Frank Lloyd Wright and Bruce Goff. Calatrava's work is rewarding on both a macro scale and micro scale because he pays equal attention to building details and to his all-encompassing vision (as best expressed at the City of Arts and Sciences complex in Valencia). It should be stated clearly that this is a coffee table book and not a scholarly book. The emphasis is clearly on the photos and on Calatrava's watercolors. Another point that needs to be made is that the title of this book is somewhat misleading. It only includes a bare-bones listing of all his work and covers just a selection of his major built, unbuilt and upcoming projects in depth. For that reason, this is a fine addition to a Calatrava collection, but it is not the be-all or end-all.

Poised against the sky like fantastic giant birds, the bridges and buildings of Santiago Calatrava possess a breathtaking grace and rhythm. Some--including the Milwaukee Art Museum and the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, Spain--are designed to expand and contract like living organisms. In Santiago Calatrava: The Complete Works, Alexander Tzonis portrays the Spanish architect as a unique blend of artist and engineer. Using analogy as a creative tool, Calatrava has filled notebooks with bold sketches of lunging and leaping human bodies that mutate into arcing roof forms and bridge suspensions. At the same time--as the author of a doctoral thesis about how to design frame structures that can open and close--he has invented new systems that combine efficiency and stability with the elegance of a brilliant mathematical solution. Tzonis, an architecture professor whose writing is a model of clarity, leads the general reader through the intricacies of Calatrava's solutions for folding frames and new kinds of curved surfaces. Vastly superior in its depth of analysis to Philip Jodidio's Santiago Calatrava, Tzonis's authoritative text is accompanied by hundreds of glorious large-scale images of the work by numerous photographers. The book opens with a photo anthology of Calatrava's greatest works and then follows the development of his vision from 1979 to his 2004 design for the World Trade Center Transportation Hub. At the beginning of his career, Calatrava designed a roof that looks like a flying machine from the notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci. Tzonis writes that the concept was "a personal manifesto of what architecture could be: innovative, optimistic, rational, and playful." Conceived a mere eight years later, the Alamillo Bridge in Seville became an instant landmark. A towering, dramatically back-angled pylon supports 13 pairs of cables as deftly as if they were strings on a harp, pushing notions of tension and stability to a thrilling new extreme. --Cathy Curtis

"must have" for architects & students.......2006-10-17
whenever i look at his work, i say to myself he's a genius.
i just love how he makes structures sculptural.
he's a pure genius of combining sculpture, structure and architecture.
Beautiful book...Great Pictures!.......2006-06-27
This is an excellent book, You will read about his biography and all his works, including some skeatches of the creative process.
great book about calatrava.......2006-03-23
i'm really satisfied with my purchase. Everything was right: the book is great, really cheap and arrived just ten days after i purchased it, though i live in spain
Inspiration for architecture students........2006-03-09
Very inspirtational due to having watercolor sketches showing the design and evolution of the different projects, including designs of furniture.
Soaring Excellence.......2005-05-05
This is a very thorough book on an amazing architect. Calatrava is a highly original architect and most of his work is nothing short of breathtaking. The photography in this book really captures the magic of his sculptures. That is what his buildings really are; great works of art. This book covers his work in detail and the text is informative. I appreciated that a model of the station at the World Trade Center site is included, one really hopes it gets build just as designed. I highly recommend this book to anyone intersted in great architecture, this man is a singular talent.

Book Description
These two volumes provide a comprehensive documentation of the creative processes which underlie Santiago Calatrava's diverse and prolific architectural ouput, featuring his personal thoughts, unique documents and analyses. The first volume presents Calatrava's doctoral thesis which combines the varying disciplines of engineering, mathematics and architecture. In the second volume, three of Calatrava's key sketch books are presented, capturing the essence of his more experimental, biomorphic, surreal, metaphorical, and analogical thinking. In this publication, the editors examine the hypothesis that both analytical and analogical tendencies are evident in Calatrava's creative work. The volumes provide a unique glimpse into the mind of this architect where opposites seem to form a rare synthesis and give rise to works of the highest quality.

Book Description
Spanish-born architect Santiago Calatrava has achieved considerable international acclaim in recent years with his breathtaking feats of engineering in the service of elegant and humanistic modern forms. While his most recent success was the much-lauded (and much-televised) stadium, velodrome, and other structures of the Athens Olympics, Calatrava first established his reputation as the preeminent engineer of our time with a stunning series of bridges designed for cities around the globe―Barcelona, Bilbao, Buenos Aires, Orléans, Seville, Venice, and Jerusalem.
Recent years have witnessed the introduction of Calatrava’s elegant forms to the American cityscape with designs for an innovative apartment tower and the much-anticipated World Trade Center Transportation Hub, both planned for lower Manhattan. But before these designs were unveiled, Calatrava completed the Quadracci Pavilion at the Milwaukee Art Museum, which Time named the best new design project of 2001. This beautifully illustrated monograph is a detailed exploration of a celebrated American architectural masterpiece.
Calatrava’s spectacular cultural and civic projects have secured his place in the pantheon of world-class twenty-first-century architects. In addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum, he’s celebrated for train stations in Zurich, Lyons, Lisbon, and Liège; the Sondica Airport in Bilbao; the Tenerife Concert Hall in the Spanish Canary Islands; and the Valencia Science Museum, Planetarium, and Opera House.

ISBN: 3822823546 of 2003 is not much more than a 1988 trilingual (English/German/French) reedition with just a few added illustrations - mainly photos of models and renderings of Athens Olympic Complex, and updated to 2003 list of works in the back including a single b/w photo in index format per project. The book pretending to be of 2003 is actually a smaller size version of 1998's ISBN: 3822878839 and ISBN: 3822857858.

Book Description
Over the last 20 years, Santiago Calatrava has made literally thousands of drawings and paintings and more than a hundred sculptures. Many of his drawings portray the human body - often in motion - alone, or in groups, or in an architectural context. Others show preliminary ideas, subsequently transformed into sculptures and which go on to provide the inspiration for his bridges, railway stations, airports and museums. A drawing is always the starting point for an entire laboratory of ideas. This book contains a selection of over 200 drawings, water colours and depictions of sculptures, chosen by the architect and the author because they are particularly well-suited to showing how Calatrava's creative ideas ripen and develop, from the initial drawings, to the sculptures, finally attaining completion in the realised buildings. At the same time, it examines the interfaces between the fine arts, engineering and architecture.

Book Description
Very few designers of this century-- a century dominated by specialization and fragmentation-- can be called universal, but Santiago Calatrava is one of these few. In his numerous buildings, engineering projects, sculptures, and furniture designs, this Spanish architect whose practice is based in Switzerland has developed a unique poetics of morphology that overlaps structure and movement.
Combining art and science, technology and architecture, Calatrava's bridges and buildings create a sublime elegance in their urban contexts. With dynamic curves, leaning vertical elements, and mechanically operable roofs, they embody potential motion. In this book, Alexander Tzonis explores Calatrava's "poetics of movement" not only in the architect's large-scale work, but also in his drawings and sculptures.
The book features thirty-five projects, fully documented with photographs, drawings, and sketches. Included are Calatrava's most recent works-- the Milwaukee Art Museum Addition and the Orient Station in Lisbon-- and his best known, from the Montjuic Tower to the Alameda Bridge.

If you need a good reference on Calatrava's work .......2006-06-16
Calatrava is indeed a new master architec and we should be glad to be alive in this era of his production.
For those of us who are not architects yet long to be in a plane of thought where we can share design insights with the great ones, Calatrvas offeres everything. Organic architecture, bold concrete and steel designs.
I would suggest to read also "Cat's paws & Catapults" to understand organic design (see my reviews).

LIST OF PROJECTS
beautiful representation of this great architect.......2003-05-12
Santiago Calatrava; quite a magnificent architect, his work is inspirational, musical, walking through any of his works gives great joy, just like listening to good orchestrated music. This book contains a selection from his work, from bridges (for which he is famous), to monuments to many other examples. the text is concise, photos are nice, but the figures are small in most of the times, trying to keep a small size low cost volume. Needs an experienced eye to understand fully what the figures are. apart from that the book is great, the book's subject is even greater.
An Elegant Curve.......2000-04-02
Before reading this book,I rarely imagine about how elegant can bridges be. Mr. Calatrava brings those imposibilities to people, especially those who never dream. Maybe I should not talk too much, because words can not bring Calatrava's thoughts to the readers precisely. Through this book, let us try to find a path to discover Calatrava's world.
Good book of Calatrava's work.......2000-03-26
This book contains a lot of information on Santiago Calatrava's buildings and bridges. It is not just a picture book, it also contains a lot of text which is very insiteful. Color and black and white photos, and Calatrava sketches. One of my favorite Calatrava books. The book's relatively small dimensions is a drawback, and in effect, some detail in the photographs is lost, but it seems to be a more complete collection of his work. Great book for learning more about Calatrava's work at very reasonable price.

good follow up to "Santiago Calatrava: Complete Works".......2006-10-25
i recommend getting "Santiago Calatrava: Complete Works" first...(by same author) pretty sure that's what most of people would do.
this book is somewhat expensive ($35), but my adoration for santiago calatrava led me to get this book. this book has some of santiago's paintings, and some greek buildings, sculptures... which i think are just there to fill up pages.
i should rate this item with 3 stars. but since i like santiago calatrava's work, i rate this 4 stars.
