I have tried the green chili recipe and love it. Looking forward to trying many others. Fun book to read as well.

Excellent recipes and instructions with sources for ingredients identified for southwest dishes.
Can You Fall In Love With A Cookbook?.......2004-09-20
I saw Sandra Pinckney's review of the Sante Fe restaurant recently on her FOOD FINDS program. The restaurant was so adorable that I immediately went online to amazon.com to see if they had a cookbook. They did. I ordered it. When it arrived at my office I started reading it and couldn't put it down. From the front cover to the last page, the artwork is exceptional. Hand-tinted photographs along with photos and murals really make this a cookbook to keep and cherish and pass down to family. I can't wait to visit Cafe Pasqual in person and hopefully get the book autographed by Ms Kagel and Ms Simpson who was the photographer. The receipes are lovely, but the book is exquisite.
Great place, exuberant cookbook.......2003-04-06
Pasqual's is kitty-corner across Water Street from the St. Francis Hotel in Santa Fe; we time our trips to get into town late at night, but before the St. Francis' bar closes, so we can check in, grab a quick drink, and then roll out of bed the next morning and hit Pasqual's for breakfast. Tamal dolce, big mug of coffee, newspaper, see if the rocking horse is still in the second floor window of the store across the street (hasn't moved in four years, so far, and counting.) We love Pasqual's, its food, its Ann-Arbor-in-the-Southwest feeling ... and the cookbook is a nice souvenir thereof. The recipes? Well, plan on mail-ordering a lot of different kinds of chile powder unless you live in New Mexico. Great stuff, though, if you have the ingredients and the patience.
Yum.......2003-01-03
I make a point of visiting Cafe Pasqual's each time I am come to Santa Fe. This cookbook is excellent . The recipes are concise and delicious and the artwork in the book is beautiful. I only wish they had a second cookbook focusing strictly on the killer breakfast menu at the Cafe. Hmm...

Book Description
Georgia O'Keeffe is one of the great artists of the twentieth century, and one of the best loved. The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico, holds the largest collection of her work, her archives, and her houses at Ghost Ranch and in Abiquiu.
This lavishly illustrated volume presents a magnificent selection of O'Keeffe's paintings, drawings, and sculptures, all reproduced in faithful color. It also offers a generous portfolio of photographssome previously unpublishedby O'Keeffe; many by Alfred Stieglitz, her husband and mentor; and others by such renowned photographers as Ansel Adams, Eliot Porter, Philippe Halsman, Yousuf Karsh, and Todd Webb.
In addition, there are a number of works by American Modernist painters who painted in New MexicoGeorge Bellows, Thomas Hart Benton, and Edward Hopper, among others.

Georgia O'Keeffe Would Have Loved This Book!.......2007-09-11
Georgia O'Keeffe would have loved this book! Not only does Barbara Buhler Lynes, curator of Santa Fe's Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, respect her subject's astonishing eye and craftsmanship in this book, she respects Ms. O'Keeffe's wishes regarding displaying her works of art. During her lifetime, the artist often mounted her own shows, e.g., at An American Place, her husband Alfred Stieglitz's gallery in New York. Ms. O'Keeffe was adamant (a) that her creations be hung on white walls, and (b) that her artwork be arranged by type rather than chronology.
Lynes abides by both of the artist's rules here to great effect, and her meticulousness, in terms of the notes she provides about the artist's work and also the tags she associates with the plates (where she identifies the type and size of the surface used and also the type of medium: charcoal, graphite, oil, watercolor), add another layer of enjoyment for the reader.
Lynes' notes attempt to steer the reader away from stereotypical interpretations that haunted Ms. O'Keeffe during her career. For instance, regarding "Blue II" (Plate 3, Page 19), the curator states: "The . . . womblike spiral of 'Blue II' seems to substantiate connections crtics in the 1920's made between O'Keeffe's work and female sexuality. Yet when she made this watercolor, O'Keeffe was intensely involved in playing the violin, and . . . the form . . . of the spiral in her watercolor most likely derive[s] from the scroll-shaped termination of the neck of the instrument . . ."
Categories in the book include abstractions, still lifes, architecture, animal and human forms, and trees. Every reader will find his or her favorite here; mine are the artist's representations of feathery kachina dolls and New Mexico's Pedernal. The last category in the book contains works by other artists at the museum whose careers, in some way, parallelled that of Ms. O'Keeffe. Stieglitz photographs (including a Georgia O'Keeffe nude) are here, as well as Ansel Adams' memorable "gelatin silver print" of Georgia O'Keeffe and Orville Cox at Canyon de Chelly National Park.
A TREASURE FOR ALL.......2007-03-28
For those of us not fortunate enough to be going to Santa Fe this year for the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum (which houses the largest collection of her work), here is an able substitute. Those who have visited the Museum in the past will relish this opportunity to revisit not only her art but her houses at Ghost Ranch and in Abiqiu, New Mexico.
It need not be said that O'Keeffe is a preeminent artist of the twentieth century, one of the most respected and loved. An American modernist she is acclaimed for her compelling abstractions, so elegant and vital. Her visions are often enlarged. Inspired by the natural she once said, "When I found the beautiful white bones in the desert I picked them up and took them home too...I have used these things to say what is to me the wideness and wonder of the world as I live in it."
This gorgeous volume is rich with illustrations - 335 in full color and two eight-page gatefolds. It also includes numerous photos, some previously unpublished, and works by others who embraced modernism and painted in New Mexico.
Curator of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, author Barbara Buhler Lynes is the leading authority on this artist. She has done a meritorious yeoman's task in compiling this glorious volume which is a treasure for all.

Once upon a time these New Mexico towns were rough-and-tumble settlements peopled by drifters and dreamers. Sante Fe and Taos are still very much a cultural rendezvous, but far removed from their humble beginnings; Sante Fe has lately become known as the Beverly Hills of the Southwestern U.S. Among its full-time residents are the Dennises, the husband and wife author-photographer team who host this tour of their neighbors' private homes. The owners and designers weigh in with their own words about creating these eclectic sanctuaries, making it a very personal tour.
Book Description
At last, a beautiful, affordable style book that offers a rare insider's look at the highly personal and innovative aesthetic for which the Southwest is famed. Santa Fe residents Lisl and Landt Dennis have documented eighteen of the most unusual and awe-inspiring homes and gardens of the Santa Fe and Taos area. Meet the owners and designers, tour their homes, and witness the grand vision and loving detail they have devoted to their living spaces. With two hundred gorgeous full-color photographs, Behind Adobe Walls is an essential keepsake for the Southwestern native or visitor, and a visual inspiration for anyone who would like to create their own Santa Fe, wherever they may call home.

perfect.......2007-09-15
This book is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Perfect condition and rapid delivery. Excellent service.
Nice photography!.......2006-07-29
I am a native New Mexican and even though the others did comment on how nice a book about "real" New Mexicans would be, I do love this book for the excellent photography. It is on my coffee table now and I just love looking at it!
The photos ARE in color..........2003-08-07
Unfortunately, the sample pages are in black and white. Never fear, they're actually IN COLOR in the actual book!
Got this for my Mom, she loved it!
I Live Here!.......2001-05-01
I would NOT loan out my copy of this book! I live in Taos (moved AFTER reading the book) and have since been to some of these homes, they are wonderful...and not at all pretentious...as one reviewer said. I use this book even today for inspiration in my own Taos home.
Colorful inspiration.......2001-02-21
I was specifically on a quest for inspiration for Santa Fe style decorating with bold color schemes, somewhat off-the-wall furnishing choices and the like. This book fit my needs perfectly, I'm happy to say. I agree with other reviewers that the book is rather limited in scope, but it was exactly what I was looking for. Beautiful photographs, clear writing, overall a very dynamic book.
Book Description
Santa Fe-style decorating is a coast-to-coast trend. Hundreds of thousands have scoured Christine Mather’s previous books, eager to incorporate Santa Fe design elements into their own homes. Now, in
Santa Fe Houses, Mather combines concrete and practical home-decorating suggestions with the beautiful photographs of her longtime collaborator, Jack Parsons, creating an invaluable guide for anyone interested in building, decorating, or remodeling a home in Santa Fe style.
Santa Fe Houses draws inspiration from the four traditional Native American elements—fire, earth, water, and air—and shows how they can be used to wonderful effect in kitchens and dining rooms, entry-ways and living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, porches, and patios. Along the way, Mather showcases furniture, rugs, lighting, hardware, tiles, shutters, and other expressions of the Santa Fe look, and ends with a comprehensive directory of sources.

Wonderful. They are not all mansions, not all ethnic, just so well and individually done. I keep it on my coffee table with others in the same genre` and my guests have trouble putting it down.
Great!
A good referance book which also serves to inspire.......2003-04-08
We are building a 4000 sq. foot straw bale home in Oakville, Ontario Canada in an adobe style. There is NOTHING in Ontario to act as inspiration and we must rely on our numerous trips to New Mexico and Arizona to inspire us in the design of our home. This book had some lovely photos that got our imaginations stirred so we would recommend it to others in our circumstance. A good book if you need inspiration and you're miles away from the southwest. Most of the photographs are well shot and beautiful. It is amongst the many books we've ordered from this site and is one of the biggest, thankfully.

Cafe Pasqual's: Recipes from Santa Fe.......2007-03-08
Excellent recipes and instructions with sources for ingredients identified for Southwest dishes.
Glad I bought it, but..........2007-01-09
It is not as good as the first one. The first book had recipes that I have used over and over, but this one did not have the same appeal. Still love the restaurant though, and can't wait to go back.
Falling In Love again!.......2006-08-30
The review I did for Ms. Kagel's previous book was entitled: Can You Fall In Love With A Cookbook? Well, the answer was yes and is yes. It is difficult to believe it has been a decade since the last wonderful book was published. In those years I have matured as a cook/baker and it appears Cafe Pasqual has matured, but in a good way. The recipes in this volume are a little different with a bit of Malaysia, Thailand and the exotic East thrown in for good measure. However, to be honest, it is the Southwest recipes I will probably enjoy again and again.
The recipes you will find in this beautifully photographed book (the color is to die for)offer something for everyone. I gave the recipe for Linda's Golden Granola to a co-worker today and she rushed home after work to make some. She's a Yoga instructor, by the way, and vegetarian, of course.
My particular favorite at the moment is the fantastic Red Chile & Sugar-Cured Bacon. If you have been bored to death with breakfast and haven't been able to find a recipe to rock your world in the morning, look no further. I made this yesterday (I pre-ordered the book and got it last week) and got rave reviews from my brunch guests. You simply MUST try this unique and wonderful recipe. Beyond yummy.
Tonight I made the Shortbread Cookies and used my Scotty Dog and Cat cookie cutters. They turned out great. You can never have enough shortbread recipes. Great with Tea.
This week I will be making the Moroccan Eggplant with Cilantro, Ginger & Garlic. I can almost smell the aroma!
This wonderful book has it all. Fantastic recipes for:
Breakfast, Soups, Salads, Lunch, Appetizers, Dinner, and Dessert. You can go on-line to their website and order a wide array of their signature goodies, as well as their fab T-shirts, coffees and other great items. There is also information at the back of the book on how you can order spices and other items mentioned in the book, from companies all over the US. So you can't use the excuse: My store doesn't have these ingredients. You will find them listed for you. Ms. Katherine has thought of everything!
The cover photograph is festive and beautiful, colorful, inviting, warm and homey. At some point in the next couple of years, I will definitely be dropping in at Cafe Pasqual to meet Katherine Kagel and staff, and also enjoy some of the dishes that are represented in this wonderful book. Can't wait! However, you don't have to wait. Just order this book right now and spend an evening just sitting on the sofa going through page after colorful page. Yes, you CAN fall in love with a cookbook! I have. Twice.
Love the restaurant, love the book........2006-08-02
My husband surprised me by purchasing this cookbook for me after one of our many trips to Santa Fe. We ALWAYS go to Pasqual's when in Santa Fe. The recipes are easy to follow, though some of the ingredients are a little tough to get in central Ohio. (But with the internet anything is possible these days.) The first recipe I tried was the Mac and Cheese (with poblanos). Wow...a real crowd pleaser. The Yellow Roasted Pepper and Fennel Salad was a refreshing change from the "usual" summer salad options. I made the Red Chili and Sugar Cured Bacon for a southwest themed brunch....Very popular. I should have made 2x more than I did. The Chinese Hacked Chicken was also really good. It was great as leftovers in the lunch box. Some of the recipes have very long lists of ingredients but don't let that deter you. It is so worth the effort. I can hardly wait until fall to make the Sugar Pumpkins filled with Vegetable Stew in Chipotle Cream Sauce.

Customer Reviews:
A real Southwestern Gem.......2007-09-11
This is a wonderful collection of great southwestern recipes that work. The author Mark Miller has introduced Cajun and Creole elements into many of his recipes making them unique without sacrificing the southwestern charachter of the dishes presented. Each and every dish is definately worthy of calling itself southwestern.
Definately comprehensive this book covers with a plethora of recipes in 10 chapters anything you may be looking for to fill your southwestern Table. The chapters covered are: cocktails, salsas, sauces and soups, appetizers and salads, Tamales, seafood and fish, game and fowl, meat, desserts and breads and what the author refers to as his bag of tricks which is an assortment of staple dishes that you will find in just about any tex-mex restaurant.
Particularly useful to me I found the Tamales chapter which apart from some basic principles on preparing tamales, includes 16 different recipes.
On the negative side, I found the book very difficult to use as the print of the recipes is extremely small. As I am over 40 and my eyesight is not what it was 20 years ago, I have had to scan and enlarge the recipes that I have used in order to use them. Other than that this is a good buy and a good addition to your cookbook library!
nice book.......2007-08-31
I had to finally find out about the recipes from this well known author and his book, restaurant and more. Solid and innovative recipes, well written it won't take you long to find some new recipes. I have just begun to look through and try some. Try some mexican southwestern food that is different and not a lot of mus and fuss. This book is a winner.
Excellent New Mexican cuisine.......2005-11-01
I have had this book sitting around for awhile, and finally tried it. I'm a vegetarian, and this book is more meat oriented. I tried a couple of the recipes, inlcuding the tamales. Those were the best tamales I have ever eaten. Even better than Richard's in Albuquerque. The Coyote Cafe is hands down my favorite restaurant, and this book is definitely representative of the food from there. I highly recommend it.
cooking with coyotes & howling with delight.......2000-04-19
Truly a spectacular cookbook, Mark Miller has recipes that will delight the senses and make you a hero at any dinner party. The ingredient combinations play off of each other and offer unique twists on traditional southwestern cooking. As one very familar with the southwest and it's cuisine, this book ranks as enticing and innovative. The recipes are foolproof and easy to follow, but you will need to adhere to the fresh ingredients rule-- no canned black beans, or frozen corn for these recipes, stick with fresh and you can not fail. Unlike some other cookbooks that feature regional cuisine, Coyote Cafe includes complete recipes that you do not need to tinker with and that are tested. So go ahead cook with Miller and howl at the moon!

Another MUST for those Southwest Food Lovers!.......2007-02-20
Excellent recipes! You'll thoroughly enjoy this as well if not better than the first cookbook by the Santa Fe School of Cooking.
SAVOR THE SOUTHWEST FLAVOR !.......2006-11-04
After experiencing authentic southwest cuisine in wonderful old west locations like Durango, Colorado, and Santa Fe, New Mexico, I had to have some more of it back here in northeastern Pennsylvania. This book does it all, with a terrific range of tasty recipes - literally from soup to nuts - and its text is fully complimented by tasteful color photography and artwork.
It makes a great gift for your favorite cook - trust me, I know !
This book will inspire you .......2006-05-30
We have always been fascinated by the cuisine of Santa Fe, a new age culinary vortex that attracts the most creative spirits in the food world. Like Cuban food, the Santa Fe style blends cooking modes and techniques from several cultures -- Spanish, Native American, Mexican, and Anglo -- to create a rich new cuisine. We enjoy the fresh new tastes and the vitality of the Santa Fe School of Cooking.
Of course, Santa Fe cuisine is unlike Cuban cuisine in its celebration of the pepper in all of its varieties. Where Cuban food sticks to the mild side of the pepper world, cooking Santa Fe style allows us to really take a walk on the wild side with hot and spicy peppers. When we want to really spice things up in the kitchen, we really enjoy these recipes with their use of a dozen or more chiles that define Santa Fe cuisine.
Somehow the authors of Southwest Cuisine have managed to create a style of "Haute Cuisine" without being pretentious, and that is an amazing accomplishment. No matter how sophisticated the dish, this is food that remains true to its more humble roots and never loses the earthiness and sincerity of its food origins.
We enjoy rice and we have been making rice pudding for ages. The authors include a savory version of rice pudding that is a real treat! Other favorites include the orange cilantro salsa, cream cheese pie with pineapple coconut sauce, and a unique "lasagna" laced with smoky chipotle and a poblano pesto that is very original. The roasted pineapple salsa has also proved very popular at our house. We've tried it with the fiery turkey as suggested in the book, but it also works well with several of our own dishes -- at least for the more adventurous eaters in our circle.
Southwest Flavors is an ideal book for people who enjoy entertaining with food. If you have a creative flair in the kitchen, this book will inspire you to think outside the box and will open up whole new pathways for your own creations. If you have been stuck in a less-than-creative food rut, this book will take you places you've never been before. With a clean look and excellent food photography, this book is a joy to cook with.

OHMYGAWD!.......2005-06-03
Man! This is a GOOD cookbook. I have many many good cookbooks and this one is just to die for. The recipes are gorgeous to look at and even better to eat. One word of caution, if you are not an experienced home chef and a fairly adventerous eater, tread cautiously. These are restaurant-level creative funky recipes with lots of unusual ingredients. If this is just your speed (as it is mine) then go for it!
A homerun... but what's new!.......2002-02-09
Dave and Nancy are gods in the hot and spicy food business. As usual you can expect concise information along with mouth-watering recipes. As host of the television series "The Sonoran Grill" and author of 4 cookbooks, I know good food writing when I see it and this is as good as southwest cooking gets. Just click on "All Books" by either Dave or Nancy and you'll see why they are so qualified to write this important cookbook and why I must add a copy of it to my collection
It's like being in Santa Fe -- at all the best places........1998-08-24
Food in Santa Fe is a major part of the style and ambiance of the city. New Mexican regional products, especially chilis and corn, and southwestern cooking styles, everything from barbeque to Tex-Mex to authentic regional Mexican and Indian cooking, are strong influences. But Santa Fe has everything from tiny cantinas with home style New Mexican cooking to 5 star restaurants where New Mexico is an influence, but suave professionalism, integration of tastes, and high presentation is the norm.
The Food of Santa Fe takes you there, telling you about the food, the style, and the best restaurants. We've been to Santa Fe many times and reading the book is like taking a brief (and teasing) visit. I have to head for the kitchen and check out the chili supply. It's also a good way to prepare for a trip -- briefing you on what to expect, what to look for, and where to find the very best examples.
There are many Santa Fe cookbooks -- those from Mark Miller and the Coyote Cafe being the best known -- but this is perhaps a better overview, and a very pretty book to read.
We expect to buy copies for our Santa Fe loving friends as Christmas gifts.

Book Description
Since the opening of the Santa Fe Trail in 1821, the town of Santa Fe, New Mexico, has been a rich source of original American design. Santa Fe Style explores the beginnings and current forms of this exciting design tradition, from the ancient inspiration of the Canyon de Chelly to the innovations of Frank Lloyd Wright and contemporary passive-solar architects. The elements of style for which the area is known-- warm adobe brick, simple hand-carved furnishings, rough-hewn beams, Indian pottery, Navajo rugs, and colorful folk sculpture-- are all beautifully photographed in over 450 illustrations.
A community of fewer than 50,000 inhabitants, Santa Fe has had an impact on American culture far greater than its size. The Spanish colonists who founded the town in 1608 adapted their European tradition to the Pueblo Indian building materials and methods, creating an architecture that is unique in the world. The trade routes and the opening of the railroad brought ranchers and farmers from the East; and spectacular surroundings of mountains and high desert drew twentieth-century writers and artists from D. H. Lawrence to Georgia O'Keeffe. Each new wave of settlers added to the Santa Fe legend and the Santa Fe style.
Here is not only the romance of Santa Fe, but the irresistible appeal of its lifestyle-- a casual elegance enlivened by a dynamic, ever-changing mixture of the old and the new, the West and the East, the plain and the sophisticated. In addition to the wide range of design ideas offered by the illustrations is a list of sources directing readers to Santa Fe merchants and services.

An excellent resource for Southwest decorating.......2006-07-24
What an awsome book. Spectacular photography and wonderful examples of southwest architecture and styling.
I constantly refer to this book. I like that all types of design are represented and not just the most expensive or the newest trends.
A New Appreciation........2003-01-07
This book is a good introduction to the Santa Fe Style, and covers all aspects of it from historical to the present. There are lots of great colour photo's and lots of old B&W photo's also. I just bought the book for information on the famous Boulder House, but after reading it I came away with more of an appreciation of the architecture, interiors, and culture of Santa Fe.
History and Great Ideas.......2002-08-15
The book was just what I was looking for, history of the Santa Fe style and great ideas for the adobe home I am planning on building in New Mexico. I have the plans, and needed the details, ideas for windows, corbels, portales, carving on the wood work, etc, etc. I came away with a whole notebook full of ideas! It is a beautiful book with over 450 gorgeous photos. Chock full of interior and exterior decorator ideas.
Real disappointment. Book filled with black & white photos........2000-05-05
Santa Fe decorating style is an inviting decor which overlaps several regions with warmth and a comfort feeling. Although this book, SANTA FE STYLE, has an inviting cover and beautiful color photographs, it is filled with black and white photos of interiors as well...too many for the cost of this book. Overall has a "dated" look to it, oversized fonts and poor use of white space, and photos are often lost in the center bindings...all a major distraction to this book. Consider Mexican Country Style by Witnyski & Carr.
Perspective ethnostylistical historical than architectural.......2000-02-11
Expected far more architectural and design illustrations from this book. It is 70% concerned with cultural interior design, furnishings and decoration. Only a small chapter devoted to the "Santa Fe Style home." It is a high quality book but not at all what I was looking for.
