Useful Reference.......2005-02-09
Excerpt: Time-Saver Standards for Architectural Design, 8th edition, is a ref¬erence for architects, design and construction professionals, and edu¬cators.
It represents the result of more than a half-century of documenting the knowledge and technical database for architectural practice. Over 80 authors and experts have contributed to the present volume, either with entirely new articles or, in other cases, updating topics and rec¬ommendations developed over many decades.
How to Use This Book
Scan the first-page summaries. The volume can be quickly scanned to provide an overview of the entire scope of architectural practice data. On the first page of each article, there is an introductory summary as well as key words, also found in the Index.
I
Use the Index for topic search. All topics covered in text, figures, and tables are listed in the Index, providing a cross-reference to locate specific content items.
Read introductory articles and each specific topic article. Each topic area and separate article presents a series of layers of increasing de-tail, beginning with introductory articles. Highlights of each article are presented through illustrations and text, including checklists of key design criteria. References at the end of each article list sources and citations.
Use the CD-ROM for easy access to selected articles with more data and detail. The CD-ROM Table of Contents is at the end of this volume, just before the Index.
Build your knowledge like a building. Topics in this volume are organized like the process of building a building, "from the ground up." This conforms to the Uni format II classification system, beginning with foundations and proceeding through superstructure, enclosure, interiors, and services. It parallels the sequence and elements by which the ar¬chitecture and construction process is logically conceived.
Companion Volumes in the Time-Saver Standards Series
The focus of this volume of Time-Saver Standards for Architectural Design, 8th edition, is the architectural design and building project, as defined in architectural practice, including all technical aspects of its design and construction.
Two additional recent titles of the Time-Saver Standards series follow a similar format and serve as companion volumes and additional ref¬erences:
Time-Saver Standards for Building Materials and Systems, 1st edition (2000), is a compilation of technical details and checklists for specifi¬cation and selection data. It is an ideal companion volume for the building designer and construction specifier.
Time-Saver Standards for Urban Design, 1st edition (2003), is an archival compilation of articles and references from the past 100 years, documenting the values and knowledge base of urban design. It covers topics beyond the scale of building to include urban design and planning.

Not good reference for Arch Engineering PE Exam.......2003-06-14
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU ARE STUDYING FOR THE NEW ARCHITECTURAL ENGINEERING PE EXAM - IT IS NOT USEFUL AT ALL. I bought this book as reference to study for and take the newly established Architectural Engineering PE exam and was sorely disappointed. The author fails in his self-proclaimed attempt to distill engineering design formulations into an easy-to-read format. The equations throughout the book are simply "dumbed down" linear statements of esoteric symbols with next to no regard to engineering notation conventions. The example problems may resemble some types of common design problems, but are rarely general enough to apply to varying situations. I didn;t refer eveon one time to any equation or example problem in this book when studying for or taking the actual PE exam in April 2003.
Standard Handbook of Architectural Engineering.......2000-06-23
This book is very helpful for the architects understanding of structures with its companion CD, is a unique problem-solving tool and provides solutions to difficulties as they arise on the job.
Excellent resource for practicing professional engineers.......1999-12-22
Excellent resource for professionals who need ready access to common architectural design issues. Provides excellent emperical techniques not available in academic texts. Real time saver. One disappointment - the computer disk of calculations was for the P. C. computers and not usable by the MacIntosh community which I am a part. Even without the computing aid, the book was well worth it's price.

Illustrated 2000 Review.......2003-04-06
I have had a couple of months now to review this book. It is very detailed in many construction techniques. There is a senario for almost every project a contractor or dedicated homeowner could do. The information in the book can be overwhelming, however, with some time to become familiar with the book, it becomes easier to follow.
Illustrated 2000 Breaks the Building Code.......2001-03-10
As the scientific world hails the completion of the first working draft of the human genome map, design professionals can hail the completion of Author Terry L. Patterson's work on understanding the 2000 International Building Code.
As a design professional with the responsibility to interpret and understand the numerous building codes and countless amendments, the methods of code research can be exhausting and ill productive. The current format and language used in most building codes lack the framework and illustrations that are needed to join the terms and definitions into an understandable and correct conclusion.
Patterson's purpose is to provide an aid to understanding the 2000 International Building Code. The handbook is a success by providing the necessary framework and illustrations that aids the reader to understanding the building code's intent as it relates to real projects.
The price of $125.00 may seem a little steep at first, but the cumulative time saved by using the handbook will more than pay for itself many times over.
Patterson's work includes the research and input by many design professionals, students and building code officials. The collective efforts by many have produced a handbook that is a must for all design professionals. As all design and construction officials know, a complete and accurate interpretation of the building codes is never complete. In the Preface, Patterson asks the reader to provide useful feedback that can be used for future editions. With the continued combined efforts of many, this Handbook has promise and will continue to be a useful tool for all.
Many thanks to Mr. Terry L. Patterson for helping the design professional to understanding the "genome map" of the 2000 International Building code.

Book Description
Unlike any other book on the market, Construction Specifications: Principles and Applications addresses specification writing as a valuable tool that can play a critical role in managing professional risk, enhancing the value of an architect's or engineer's instruments of service, and increasing the profitability of facilities in both public and private sectors. This book will guide users through the creation and implementation of construction specifications and related construction administration documents, detailing the requirements for effective, successful specifications. Coverage includes topics never before explored in other specification-focused publications, such as standards of professional care, risk management, liability reform for architects and engineers, and the very latest formats of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), including MasterFormat 2004 Edition, SectionFormat, and UniFormat. Given the growing complexity of the construction industry, the demand for specifications that can serve as management assets and risk prevention resources is at an all-time high, and professionals armed with the knowledge that this book provides will be best prepared to face these new challenges.
