Design and Construction of Wood Framed Buildings
ASIN: 047123687X |
Book Description
Since its first publication in 1966, Timber Construction Manual has become the definitive design and construction industry source for building with wood, both sawn lumber and structural glued laminated timber. Timber Construction Manual, Fifth Edition features an improved organization of content to provide architects, engineers, contractors, educators, the laminating and fabricating industry, and all others having a need for reliable, up-to-date technical data and recommendations on engineered timber construction with essential knowledge of wood and its application to specific design considerations.
Based on the most reliable technical data available, this defining guide has been thoroughly revised to encompass:
- The latest design procedures for timber construction, featuring thorough updates of all recommended design criteria for timber members, systems, and fasteners
- A simplified design procedure for pitched and tapered curved beams
- An entirely new chapter on Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) and an updated section on the chemical properties of wood
- The latest design and construction codes, including the 2001 National Design Specification for Wood from the National Forest Products Association, AITC 117-2004, and examples featuring ASCE 7-02 and IBC 2003
- More cross-referencing to other available AITC standards and less superfluous full citations result in a leaner book with more useful, up-to-date information

Book Description
This revised handbook brings together the practical experiences of engineers in the field and of research programs testing bamboo. The author shows how bamboo can be harvested, seasoned and jointed to form walls, doors and windows, roofs, floors, ceilings, roof trusses and bridges, and how to weave bamboo.
Customer Reviews:
Great technical info.......2003-05-25
If you plan to build structures with bamboo, this book is a must. It is the only one I have found that has construction details.
Too modern.......1999-06-14
Technology is great, but sometimes building methods of native people are "better" than our scientific methods. From an engineering standpoint it was a great book but as a book for someone curious about many ways of building things I was a little disappointed.

Not Bad.......2005-06-02
Not a bad field guide but falls a little short on some subjects. The ones it does cover it does well but skips over some key topics. Every Line truck should have one, but keep a copy of the big book close.
The definitive guide for the lineman/cableman.......2001-06-08
I used this book as a reference for a project I needed to do on splicing. I found the information contained was concise and clear. The book covers a wide variety of subjects that are very relevant to the jobs that a lineman and cableman would need to perform everyday.

Update please!.......2007-04-04
This book is one of the best on the subject, but it definitely needs to be updated! Check out "The Encyclopedia of Wood" from the USDA to get a comprehensive and up-to-date guide to wood.
The best reference book I have for wood........2000-01-07
This book remains open next to my keyboard when I'm designing residential structures. The other books remain in boxes in my garage. Faherty's use of examples is wonderful. Everything from shear walls to glulam technology is explained.

Book Description
The definitive design and construction industry source for building with woodâboth sawn lumber and structural glued laminated timber. This edition contains the latest design procedures for timber construction. Information and recommendations are based on the most reliable technical data available and reflect commercial purposes found to be most practical. Customer Reviews:
thorough.......2000-06-13
This book covers everything an engineer could ever need with regard to wood construction. From glulams to ply-wood this book has it all. This is the only reference necessary in order to design wood trusses and glulam arches. I found the book extremely useful in figuring various structural factors unique to wood construction(eg. checking and moisture content). This is the best resource for the structural, civil or mechanical engineer interested in timber construction.

Book Description
This definitive work provides step-by-step guidance in the techniques of digging and constructing a well, including the principles of groundwater storage, the actual construction, the materials required, and details of additional sources of information.
Book Description
Today's environmental concerns have led to a new generation of high-tech stoves, designed to burn cleaner and more efficiently than ever before.
The New Woodburner's Handbookis the essential layman's guide to both the latest improvements and the age-old wisdom of heating with wood. Chimney sweep Stephen Bushway presents first-time and long-time woodburners with all the information necessary to heat a home economically and safely, while safeguarding the environment for ourselves and our children. Topics discussed include: selecting the right home for your home and your lifestyle; tips for insulating and conserving energy at home; installing a woodstove safely, catalytic, noncatalytic, and pellet stoves -- pros and cons; masonry heaters -- an ancient and unsurpassed way of warming.
New federal regulations and air-quality laws make it more important than ever that woodburners know about all of the options available to them. The New Woodburner's Handbook helps you apply the latest developments in the industry to your specific situation and decide for yourself how heating with wood makes sense in your own home.
Customer Reviews:
Preaching to the choir.......2000-12-26
If you are THINKING about a wood stove, and wondering if it is an environmentally correct decision, if there are any real benefits to it, and have a bucket full of money available to you, this is the book to help make your decision. If you are a life long environmentalist who believes in getting off the grid but have a limited income and want practical advice about chosing a stove, used or economical, and installing it in your home, don't bother. I found this book useless.
A comprehensive study.......2000-01-07
This book has a wealth of information for anyone who is truly interested in wood heating.
A Must-Have-NOT for wood-stove virgins!.......1999-11-18
This book concentrates on how to purchase a wood stove, the differences found among brands. We recently purchased a home that had an existing wood stove. I had never even lived in a home with a fireplace. I was looking for a book to direct me in how to start a fire, how to put out a fire if necessary, what to do if "something goes wrong", and how to maintain the fire once started, etc., this book gave me none of this. It had two pages on the topic of starting a fire. Wood-stoves are very dangerous things and I feel that this, or any book on the subject should address the dangers and these concerns.
I warn against buying this book. Don't waste your money!
Book Description
Since it was first issued in 1935 the Wood Handbook, developed by scientists at the USDA Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin has served as the preeminent source of information on wood and wood products. This 1999 edition of the Wood Handbook reflects a complete revision of the last edition published in 1987, and presents many new chapters on new products and processes. Subjects covered in this 428-page handbook include 1) basic wood and wood product characteristics and properties, 2) various wood manufacturing processes, 3) processes to enhance the performance of wood products, 4) structural design information, and 5) specifications and rules for the proper use of wood products. The Wood Handbook contains nearly 200 figures and over 100 tables.
Customer Reviews:
Another update needed. .......2007-04-04
This book is great, but since it was last revised in 1999, it needs to be revised again. Check out "The Encyclopedia of Wood," also from the United States Department of Agriculture for an updated, definitive wood resource.
