Book Description
From two acclaimed, award-winning restaurants came two of the most acclaimed, award-winning cookbooks ever published—now packaged together in a luxurious slipcased boxed set, the ideal gift for any food lover.
First there was French Laundry in Napa Valley, setting a new standard for American fine dining. Then there was The French Laundry Cookbook, setting a new standard for American cookbooks. In 1998, Chef Keller opened Bouchon, “so that I’d have a place to eat after cooking all night at the French Laundry,” and that restaurant, too, gave birth to a groundbreaking cookbook. Now, fifteen years after Thomas Keller first set foot in what would become a landmark restaurant, these two extraordinary books are offered in a striking new slipcased edition. With this year’s opening of the Bouchon Bakery in New York City, and last year’s momentous Michelin guide that awarded Keller’s Per Se the top honors, Keller is increasingly in the limelight—and his inventive, delicious food is increasingly in the consciousness of a national audience. The Complete Keller is the perfect gift for anyone who loves fine food.
Customer Reviews:
This can only be described as "food porn".......2007-03-24
These books are outstanding - the level of description, the quality of the books themselves, the full color pictures of what the dishes look like... I gave it as a Valentine's Day gift to my girlfriend who loves them - and keeps calling the books "Food Porn".
Great Delivery.......2007-01-18
Service was great. I recieved the package 2 days after i ordered it. Everything turned out great and I apprechiate it.
Excellent Books...not for Beginners.......2007-01-14
Having been to both Bouchon and The French Laundry makes these two volumes even more special. We have made a few of the recipes, but recommend perfecting them yourself before entertaining...they can be quite challenging! Great pictures too...a must have for the serious cook that wants to try and imitate Keller, and a great memory if you have been to the restaurants!
Possibly The Best Contemporary Cookbook.......2007-01-10
Although probably not for the casual home cook these books are perfect for those interested in preparing fresh food correctly and with patience. I myself am a young cook in the food industry and have gleened much knowledge from both The French Laundry and Bouchon. Bouchon, being the more accessible of the pair, probably offers more for the home cook. Yet being able to cross-reference the two is exciting and insightful, and gives one a look at how Keller came to be one of the greatest chef's in the world.
Food Porn.......2006-12-06
That is probably the best way to describe these cookbooks. They are a beautiful, sumptious feast for the eye and palate. The techniques that are taught are so valuable you will find yourself using them when not using either of these cookbooks. The pages are beautiful and glossy. The recipes, are beautifully laid out step by step. There has been criticism that Keller's cookbooks are almost too nice to use. I beg to differ. As with everything Thomas Keller does, these too are first class.

Book Description
In 1956, a twenty-one-year-old Elvis Presley was at the beginning of his remarkable and unparalleled career and photographer Alfred Wertheimer was asked by Presley’s new label, RCA Victor, to photograph the rising star. With unimpeded access to the young performer, Wertheimer was able to capture the unguarded and everyday moments in Elvis' life during that crucial year, a year that took him from Tupelo, Mississippi to the silver screen, and to the verge of international stardom and his crowning as "The King of Rock 'n' Roll.” As Alfred Wertheimer photographed Elvis during 1956, and again in 1958, he created classic images that are spontaneous, unrehearsed and completely without artifice.
Wertheimer’s photographs of Elvis are extraordinary and he appears almost ethereal, whether reading a newspaper while waiting for a cab, or washing his hands during one of his many train trips. After 1958 and Elvis’ induction into the army, the world seemingly forgot about Wertheimer’s magical photographs- for nineteen years- until Aug 16, 1977, the day Elvis died and Time Magazine called. “The phone hasn’t really stopped ringing in the last thirty years,” observes Wertheimer.
Many of the photographs in this visual treasury are previously unpublished and some have become almost as famous as the man himself.

Elvis at 21 Book.......2007-06-30
i Love this Book it has very good quality photos of the king in his prime!
THE Best Elvis Book.......2007-04-11
If you only have one Elvis book in your library, or one photography book, let it be "Elvis at 21"...you will never buy a more sumptuous volume. The printing of the images is phenomenal, with wonderful use of gatefolds. It is one of the very few art books I've bought that I didn't balk at the retail price.
Wertheimer's photographs are collectively an artifact of our cultural history. It's amazing to see so many of them gathered together and in sequence. A much smaller selection of this body of work was published about 20 years ago as "Elvis '56"--this was my one-book-in-the-library, even back when I only had a photocopied edition. With this expansion, a whole new king is crowned.
2007 is of course the 30th anniversary of the King's passing. The world should expect a vast onslaught of new and revised offerings on the man. "Elvis at 21" throws down an early gauntlet so firmly, the other publishers might just as well crawl back into their niches.
Buy it, and wear a bib so you don't ruin the pages with your drool.
spectacular.......2007-02-14
the photographs are spectacular, but where is the non-limited edition that i've seen retail in the bookstore for $65?
Elvis at 21 book.......2007-01-20
This book is beautiful. The pictures are excellent and it is nice to have as a collectors item for any Elvis fan or give as a gift to any Elvis fan.
Elvis at 21.......2007-01-17
Alfred Wertheimer's photos is this book are FANTASTIC! It is a rare treat to be able to see Elvis at this stage in his life... when he was doing what he loved while still able to go in to restaurants, walk the streets, etc. and be recognized and appreciated by people around him, without being mobbed. What a wonderful time to cherish in these photographs.

E.S.T........2007-09-21
I grew up on the south side of Chicago during the 80s and had many friends who were "taggers" and got up every chance they got. They had spray-cans, hollowed-out deodorant sticks somehow replaced with ink, fat markers, Griffin, and who knows what else. Though I myself wasnt a graffiti artist or writer or tagger, this book is a great ride down memory lane for those of us who grew up on the streets. For those of us of a certain age, this book, "Subway Art", along with movies like Breakin' I AND II, Beat Street, original hip-hop and old school house music were all of a specific time and place. This book will make you want to break out the Pumas with the fat laces, bring out the tile and start back-spinnin', but it is also one of the the earliest, most definitive and detailed books on graffiti ever.

This is what got me back into graff.......2006-12-06
I started doing graff back in the late 90's; I was 14 at the time and to be honest with you; like all great writers we were all toy's at one time but has time went by and we got better with our skills, we all have read this book at one time or another. On with the book review.
This book is just simply AMAZING...you have old school pieces from the Godfather of Graffiti: SEEN, BLADE (which he has painted 5,000 trains during the golden age of the MTA in NYC; since I saw the graffiti scene on the trains at the tender age of six and seven in NYC, I was simply amazed at that age on how people could sneak in at night and do this with spray-paint but I digress), LADY PINK, and the list goes on. If your just starting out in graffit, this is a great book on to connect letters, bubble letter's, block's, and some old school color schemes, though I would not call it the Bible of Graffiti, it is pretty darn close to it. Check it out.
THIS BOOK CHANGED MY LIFE FOR A WHILE BUT NOW I'M 34.......2006-07-01
Subway Art. What can I say? This, Style Wars, Beat Street, Break Dance... they all had their influence on me (& a whole generation) back in the day.
Hip Hop isn't what it used to be, though. Most of what we hear these days is mixed up with R'n'B, commercialised, repackaged and shipped for your dissatisfaction. If you ask me... when it comes to Hip Hop, stick with the old school.
I was brought up in Melbourne, Australia, and did quite a bit of graffiti there during the 1980s. Melbourne had plenty of weird & wonderful characters who were into graff back then. The vast majority have gone their separate ways. But there's always the rare psycho who's still bombing (I'm not referring to the younger generation - but to old school dudes who are still around). There's also those who got into graphic art and made a career for themselves out of graff.
I recommend checking out some of the original Vaughn Bode cartoons for yourself through a simple Google search.
Additional to this, I recommend Getting Up: Subway Graffitti in New York" by Craig Castleman. It has some pictures of trains and so on, but it is more for the reader. A copy was stolen from a local library near me - go figure.
And if you're ever in NYC... Check out the Hall of Fame. It's located on the corner of 106th Street and Park Avenue.
THE word on old school graff........2005-10-05
This classic book, along with "Broken Windows: Graffiti NYC" is all you need to know about NYC graff. Anyone up needs both of these books. Knowledge is king!

Book Description
When the first two books of Jackson's groundbreaking chronicle were published, critics hailed them as "historical gold" (Denver Post), "a thorough and thoroughly entertaining history" (Boston Globe), and "an opera-lover's dream" (Opera News). In this new work, Paul Jackson expands his survey of the broadcasts by examining the decade that saw the move from the old house uptown to the technological marvel at Lincoln Center. There Rudolf Bing's final six years give way to four seasons of management turmoil until 1976, when James Levine was named music director and took hold of the Met's artistic future. 140 performances, beginning with the controversial opening night premiere of Barber's Antony and Cleopatra, are vividly recaptured by Jackson, a musicologist with an ability to combine narrative history with musical analysis and criticism. The legendary creations of Tebaldi and Corelli, Sutherland and Tucker, of Caballe, Crespin, Price, Bergonzi, Gedda and others are explored in depth. Conductor luminaries like Bernstein, Bohm, Krips and Karajan spell the efforts of more mortal colleagues. And Domingo and Pavarotti enter upon the scene that they will dominate for decades to come. Featuring 100 photos (the majority courtesy of the Metropolitan Opera Archives), this book will delight both seasoned devotees of the broadcasts and new listeners alike.
Customer Reviews:
Met Turkey Trot.......2007-06-22
I had high hopes for this book because I attended many of the performances described therein. But what a disappointment! Turgid, prolix writing, horribly long paragraphs, no subheads to break the text, and some truly ghastly analogies ("...innocence is no part of her timbre", author Paul Jackson writes of Teresa Kubiak's Jenufa).
There are typos, too many instances of faulty personification, and other egregious grammatical errors that a good editor should have caught.
I may dip into this book from time to time. But the chances of my ever reading it cover to cover are somewhere between zero and none.
PROFESSOR JACKSON SCORES AGAIN.......2007-02-24
This long-awaited volume is, apparently (and unhappily), the last in Paul Jackson's survey of the Metropolitan Opera broadcast series. It seems he doesn't intend to carry on the narrative past the end of the 1975-76 season, breaking off at the point when James Levine is named the Met's Music Director. As someone who didn't begin listening to the Met broadcasts in earnest until the '72-'73 season, I would love to read Jackson's reactions to some of the performances from the late 1970s and beyond. But, we'll have to take what he gives us. And once again, what he gives us here is a pithy, marvelously descriptive appreciation of numerous Met broadcasts, starting with the new Met's opening night (Barber's "Antony and Cleopatra") in 1966 and ending (chronologically, anyway) with the "Meistersinger" of April 17, 1976, though the last broadcast actually discussed in the text is the "Aida" of March 6 '76. I have noticed evidence of less-than-scrupulous editing, with a few more typos than in Jackson's first two books. Some examples: the photo of baritone Donald McIntyre on p.381 is mis-identified as "JOHN" McIntyre; the "Ballo in Maschera" performance of Jan.30, 1971 on p.145 notes in the text that Molinari-Pradelli was replaced by Cleva as conductor, but the cast list in the margin lists Molinari-Pradelli. But these are minor blemishes at best. The one thing that disappoints me is that the Index seems markedly less useful this time around. Some things are unaccountably left out altogether: looking for performances of Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier?" You won't even FIND this work listed in the index! (If you're curious, Jackson discusses the 1973 broadcast starting on p.350; 1974 on p.354; and 1976 on page 517). However, as someone on the Opera-L discussion list pointed out, there actually IS a "page reference to broadcast performances of operas critiqued in the text," complete with dates... it just isn't in the Index! It starts FOLLOWING the index on page 630. Still making my way through this large volume... but given Jackson's evocative writing style (think J.B. Steane with even more discussion of vocal technique), browsing is part of the fun.
A Fine Tribute to Ten Years of Performances.......2007-02-15
To me, the astounding part of Mr. Jackson's writing is how much more he sees in every performance than I do. He seems to understand every nuance of every singer to see the very subtle differences between two great performers. Not only that, but he is able to put words together that explain these differences that even I can understand. Unlike many other writers, it is very rare that I get the feeling that somehow we didn't go see the same show.
In this book he covers ten years of performances of the New Met at Lincoln Center. That's a lot of performances, and his descriptions seem always to be right on the mark without being repetitive. I'm afraid that I would absolutely run out of things to say --I guess that's why he is the master and I the student.
For the publication he has also selected a lot of photographs photographs. Most of these come from the archives of the met and serve to illustrate the points he is making.
This book is a splendid tribute to the performances.
Fitting Conclusion to a Superb Series.......2007-02-14
"Start-Up at the New Met," Vol. III is apparently the final installment in Paul Jackson's epic traversal of the history of the Met broadcasts. The book is fully worthy of the first two volumes.
I have heard many of the broadcasts Jackson covers - indeed, I remember hearing many of them when they happened - and for the most part I find his assessments astute and on point, even when our opinions diverge. Unlike most critics, Jackson has the luxury of writing as much, and in as much detail, about a singer's performance as he wants to. As a result, as in the previous volumes, we often get a blow-by-blow account of a singer's entire performance, both the big numbers and the smaller felicities along the way. I wonder how many people realize what an achievement is Jackson's to write page after page about singers, operas and voices - often the same singers, operas and voices many times - and yet manage (for the most part) to avoid monotony or a sense of repetitiveness or redundancy. Mr. Jackson has a rare imagination and command of vocabulary, and his writing is one of the treats of this series.
I also appreciate Jackson's lack of meanness and cattiness in reviewing these performances, even when dealing with singers that he obviously does not care for. His judgments are balanced and manage to be objective without concealing the obvious passions that motivate the author. One never has the feeling of an old geezer sitting on the porch wishing for Ze Oldt Days and bewailing the decline of vocal standards. Rather, Jackson obviously appreciates great singing wherever and whenever it happens, and while knowledge of the past informs his judgments, it does not cramp them. One gets the impression that he looks for as much to enjoy in a performance or a singer as he can. After the mean, shallow bitchiness that so often afflicts operatic discourse, particularly on-line, Jackson is like a breath of fresh air.
Another plus of Jackson's books is that they always give one a sense of the historical context of a performance. His chapter on the first season at Lincoln Center, and the travails of the new house, make for fascinating reading. It helps that Jackson apparently has had free access to the Met archives.
Photos are numerous and gorgeous. I haven't done a direct comparison, but it seems to me that there are more photos per page than in past books, and this is all to the good, for my taste.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. With this and the previous two volumes, Jackson has written one of the most monumental studies ever of singing and operatic performance. His books belong in any opera lover's collection. In my library, I regard them as indispensable and they have been, and will continue to be, a source of hours of pleasure and education. Thank you, Mr. Jackson.
A seminal work of accomplished scholarship.......2007-02-03
"Star-Up" At The New Met: The Metropolitan Opera Broadcasts, 1966-1976" compiled and organized with commentary by Paul Jackson (Dean Emeritus of the College of Fine Arts, and Professor Emeritus of Music, Drake University) is the definitive, 656-page history of the Metropolitan Opera radio broadcasts in what was their new home at the Lincoln Center in New York City. Illustrated throughout with some one hundred black/white photographs, "Star-Up At The New Met" covers all 140 performances that took place from the debut performance of Samuel Barber's 'Antony and Cleopatra' on September 16, 1966, through the final season of 1976. The personalities and performances are superbly presented, accompanied by knowledgeable commentary offering an informed and informative insight into the performers and their productions. "Star-Up At The New Met" is a seminal work of accomplished scholarship and an enthusiastically recommended addition to personal, academic, and community library 20th Century American Music and/or American Popular Culture reference collections.

Customer Reviews:
This book is a great reference.......2006-03-11
I purchased this book for my father. He is a music professor and teaches a course in Broadway Musicals. He just raved about how helpful it is to he and his students.
Great book.......2002-08-01
This was the required text book for a class in musical theater in college. I found it informative but lacked many details that I would have like to have known.
Could use more frequent updates but..........2001-07-28
overall a nice book covering the Bway Musicals. I happened to purchase one for a friend who attends the theater (both Broadway and off-Broadway) religiously and she was very happy with the gift.
A true must-have book for all musical theatre fans!.......2000-07-26
This book has proven and indispensable part of my theatre library, and if you get it, it will become one for you as well. Want to know what date the original production of Show Boat opened on Broadway? This book will tell you. Who the original stars of Mexican Hayride were? That's in here, too. You will be able to find the answer to just about any question you could ever ask of Broadway's hit musicals. A perfect companion piece to Ken Mandelbaum's Not Since Carrie (which chronicles the flop musicals this book mostly excludes), and a wonderful way of tracking the history of the Broadway musical, Broadway Musicals: Show by Show is as comprehensive, helpful, and essential as reference books on Broadway come.
FANTASTIC! The most useful guide for easy theatre reference.......1998-08-31
Enough can't be said about this book! It is a masterpiece for theatre buffs like myself. I live by that book, since I'm involved in theatre on a daily basis. When considering which musical to use in our high school's season next year I immediately turned to this book for it's easy synopsis of so many hit shows, it's staistics about the shows, and it's genuine knowledge. The best reference book about theatre on the market today! Period.

Interior Design Course: Principles, Practices, and Techniques for the Aspiring Designer (Quarto Book)
ASIN: 0810958880 |
Book Description
Color has always played an important role in interior design, from the earth-toned halls of ancient Cretan palaces to the bright surfaces of modern homes. Yet most people are largely unaware of the way in which color affects their surroundings. In this comprehensive introduction, readers discover the impact that color has on the way they see the world and learn how to effectively use color to beautify their environment.
With a wealth of information and images, the book is divided into three parts: a history of interiors from the perspective of color systems, an easy-to-understand outline of color theory and its underlying science, and a practical guide to using color to enhance interior settings and create specific effects. From James McNeill Whistler's Peacock Room in Washington D.C., to Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye in provincial France, to a Prairie-style interior by Frank Lloyd Wright, Ethel Rompilla shows how color creates the world in which we live. This lavishly illustrated volume is an indispensable and accessible guide for the professional and amateur decorator alike. AUTHOR BIO: Ethel Rompilla is a professor of color theory at the New York School of Interior Design in Manhattan, as well as a highly regarded interior designer. She lives in New York City. The New York School of Interior Design is an accredited school of interior design offering programs leading to undergraduate and graduate degrees in interior design. The school is located in New York City.
Customer Reviews:
Very nice, but more of a textbook........2007-10-01
This book has some lovely interiors and color combination ideas, but it's more of a textbook and has many pages devoted to color spectrum charts and the science of color. I read about it in a well-known home decorating magazine which described it as one of the best books for decorating with color, but I really found it a little too technical. If you are a design student, it would probably be more appropriate.
A good beginner's handbook.......2006-04-04
This book is good for those who have limited background in color theory and want a concise history of color. Most of the book discusses color from cave to modern and contemporary periods culminating with applications to decorating. The color plates are good examples of the content being presented. Certainly a good handbook for a beginner.

Book Description
This delightful book presents hundreds of entertaining caricatures of celebrities from popular American periodicals in the first half of the twentieth century. Employing a vivid new type of portraiture based on modern design and a preoccupation with personality- based fame, master caricaturists filled the pages of newspapers and magazines with renderings of Mae West, George Gershwin, the Marx Brothers, Babe Ruth, Mussolini, and other personalities of their times.

A STUNNING OVERVIEW OF 20TH CENTURY CARICATURES.......1998-04-24
This is the best single overview of 20th Century American caricature I have ever seen. The quality of the reproductions is outstanding and a good many of the items herein are not available in other books. The book's cutoff point appears to be the Fifties; it would have been nice to have had some more recent examples by artists such as Edward Sorel, but perhaps the newer people are adequately covered in other books. Anyone interested in caricature cannot do without this book.

Book Description
A Love Supreme. Miles Ahead. Brubeck Time. Yardbird Suite. The Sidewinder. For newcomers just beginning their library of recordings, and for longtime fans looking to deepen their understanding, New York Times jazz critic Ben Ratliff offers an assertive, deeply knowledgeable collectors guide, full of opinions and insights on the one hundred greatest recorded works of jazz. From the rare early recordings of Louis Armstrong, through Duke Ellington, Benny Goodmans seminal Carnegie Hall concert, and the lions of the bebop era, to the transformative Miles Davis and several less-canonized artists, such as Chano Pozo, Jimmy Giuffre, and Greg Osby, who have made equally significant contributions, Ratliff places each recording in the greater context and explains its importance in the development of the form. Taken together, these original essays add up to a brief history of jazz, highlighting milestone events, legendary players, critical trends, and artistic breakthroughs.
Customer Reviews:
Decent introduction to jazz.......2005-06-17
The recommendations in this book are all solid and classic. The brief essays about the recordings are fairly erudite, but I find the tone slightly pretentious at times. I agree with another reviewer in that he tends to write about himself instead of striving for a more objective description of the recordings.
Obviously, a list of 100 recordings cannot begin to justice to the enormous quantity of jazz available. Ratliff's list concentrates more on established "classics" than on modern players -- you will not find Brad Mehldau, Kenny Garrett, Kurt Rosenwinkel, or Nick Payton. Nor will you find more "approachable" but great contemporary musicians such as Kurt Elling and Luciana Souza. Because of this, I do not recommend the guide to someone who wants to get an idea of where jazz is right now. It is more of a historical introduction than a guide for modern listeners. This is not meant as criticism; that is probably what Ratliff intended.
Overall, this book would be a decent place to start for the jazz newbie (or even for the seasoned listener, who may have neglected some or many of these recordings).
Unfair.......2004-09-08
The reviews here have been too harsh to this book. This book is not meant by any strech to be a replacement for the Penguin Jazz on CD Guide, but as a list and analysis of 100 very good jazz CDs it isn't bad at all. The reviews are generally insightful and informative, and the book contains a fine balance of big band, be-bop, and post-bop, with all the colours in between. (His defense of Cecil Taylor is particularly refreshing.) I might quibble with the title, but no list of 100 CDs will satisfy every reader as including all the "essentials." The main list, combined with the additional 100 CDs listed in the appendix, would provide enough listening enjoyment for a lifetime.
about the author more than the music.......2003-08-28
Ratliff just can't help inserting himself at every turn in this book. Here's an example: The chapter on "Bill Evans Trio: Saturday at the Village Vanguard" begins: "There's a single-minded, amiable rapture suffusing most of Bill Evans's music that just doesn't do it for me in the long run. It's not my mood; it's not one of the things that satisfies my thrill seeking." Well, gee, thanks for sharing sharing; but save it for your diary. If you enjoy watching an author shoot from the hip (Sarah Vaughan, he says, "in certain low-register moments ... approaches vulgarity" and is lacking in "good taste"), maybe you'll enjoy it. If you simply want to learn more about the peak recordings of jazz history, turn elsewhere.
A Clear, Helpful Introduction to Buying Jazz Today.......2003-06-04
Ratliff's style is accessible, direct, and relevant to younger folks hoping to discover jazz recordings of merit. One of his themes is that jazz can both be good art and entertain at the same time, which is fantastic in my view because too many folks are intimidated by "America's classical music." Buy this book and you'll reference it a hundred times when hoping to expand your knowledge of the music, I guarantee.
Not the Best Place to Start.......2003-05-26
This book is NOT a list of the 100 "best" jazz recordings, but rather what the author considers the 100 "most important." That means he includes albums that he admits even he doesn't like, because they're good for you. [Like spinach]
He also views jazz history through the lens of racism, which seems to influence a number of his choices and explanations.
I would recommend buying the Penguin Guide instead. It's far more comprehensive and the ratings are more reliable. If it seems too intimidating, start with the albums that earn a Rosette--that will still be a better starting place than the list in this book.
