Book Description
Greene & Greene furniture, widely recognized as the finest expression of the American Arts & Crafts movement, is presented here for the first time as working shop drawings. Featuring accurate front, side, and top views, complete cutting lists, and comprehensive section and detail views, these drawings offer today’s woodworkers a unique opportunity to reproduce the rare furniture line, which has often been photographed but not presented in such detail. Including introductory chapters on both the Greenes and the Halls, an extensive discussion covers suitable woods and finishes and provides solid technical information on how to make such characteristic Greene & Greene details as proud ebony plugs and splines, breadboard ends, and cloud lifts.

Greene & Greene for the master craftsman.......2007-05-07
This has to be the most beautiful book in the series of Arts & Crafts style shop drawings from Robert Lang, and I have them all. I have to say, almost every piece in this book is one where you have to decide that you are going to devote between 6 months and a year of your life to making. I have not yet made this committment, but I already see how reading this book has influenced some of the details on my other work. Gorgeous color plates of these masterpieces are included and everything is printed on archival quality glossy paper. Drawings are clear and descriptive text is concise and well written. Overall I recommend this to any student of Greene and Green (and Peter and John Hall, the craftsmen who actually built most of these pieces for them!)
Shop drawings book review.......2007-02-16
This book is a welcome add to the many showing the arts & crafts furniture designs. The text and drawings are first rate and guide you through the design process. The author certainly has done a complete investigation to put together this fine review of the many arts & crafts furniture era.
What it says it is.......2007-01-29
"Shop Drawings" is little more than it says it is. It would have been nice if it were more but it doesn't claim to be. If you have a background similar to Mr. Lang's as I do with drafting, then there is all you need to reproduce the Greene and Greene designs, at least from a dimensional stand point. You will however need to figure out the details on your own or reference some of the magazine articles on reproducing the Greene and Greene furnature. As Mr. Lang states in his book, it's not a how to guide. It's still a very good and informative book however and one you will want if you have visions of building some of this unique furnature.
What???.......2007-01-20
The two previous reviews by "experienced" craftsmen are laughable at the very least.
A book of shop drawings is that. And this one is one of the best. It is not a tome for beginners or for those who do not have the ability to infer and who do not have spatial orientation necessary to derive results from DRAWINGS.
The two previous reviewers must be very unhappy individuals to have to be led by the nose so much.
As to this book. If you truly are a woodworker, this is a fine reference work. Not only that but it also deals somewhat with the philosophy of woodworking. That is always a good touch.
Short on substance and details.......2006-12-12
Having purchased two other books of this nature by Mr. Lang, I placed myself on the waiting list at Amazon and waited months the get the book in my hands. I did not hesitate to break it out of the packaging and dove right into it. The first forty-five pages were dedicated to the history and other background information necessary to get a good understanding of the Greenes' design concepts and the practical methods used by the Hall brothers to construct the pieces. I was very disappointed with the scant number of details that one might expect from such a technical manual. There are a few photographs that show some of the processes (most of us know how to use a shoulder plane) but what was lacking were drawings to reinforce or to make clear some of the principles Lang was trying to describe. The book read like a series of essays rather than a substantive, technical manual with supporting details.
The actual measured drawings are just that as they lack certain pertinent construction details. I am a fairly skilled woodworker, having started the craft at the age of fourteen and have continued until today, even after a successful career in architecture; and what I have concluded is that this book was hurriedly put together to meet some preset deadline. It is my opinion that if more time and thought was given by the author to the details it would have resulted in a much better book.
So I am sorely disappointed with the contents and the lack of detailing and would not recommend this book to anyone but very experienced woodworkers. Mr. Lang has missed the mark this time and what a pity.
Book Description
An indispensable guide for collectors and dealers who want to compare and evaluate early American antiques. When Albert Sack's
Fine Points of Furniture: Early American--Good, Better, Best was published in 1950, it established a new standard for evaluating American antiques. In his new book, Sack applies this standard to furniture pieces that have appeared on the market in more recent years.
Full color and black-and-white photographs.

Dean of Early American Furniture.......2005-04-09
If you have any interest at all in Early American Furniture, buy this book! Mr. Sack is one of the most knowledgable experts on this subject. This book shows you the subtle differences in what makes a piece good and what makes a piece great. Having his experise on this subject is invaluable if you have any interest in searching for early American antique furniture. He learned from his father, who had an amazing eye, and Mr. Sack shows you what he has learned. He is reknowned as an expert in the field of Early American Furniture. It is a shame that this book is out of print and that one must spend a great deal for a used copy, but this book is worth every penny. Maybe we will get lucky and he will revise it again, but I would not hold my breath.
Best of the best.......2003-07-14
Not a lot can be said here. If you want to see the best and have comparasions to look at as well. Or if you just want drool over real furniture this is the book. A must have for anyone who aspires to knowing what is truly art in furniture design.
One of the Best on Antique Furniture.......2002-12-31
If you want to truly study and develope an "eye" for the finer points of antique furniture this is a must have book.
The next step up from basic identification books.......1999-06-01
A great book for any furniture collector. If you want to see why similar pieces of furniture vary so much in value, this is the book for you. Education for the eyes. I'm beginning to feel like an expert!
Book Description
Masterpieces of French Jewelry is a delightful testament to the power of jewelrylike all true artto mirror changes in America's evolving social milieu. It offers an enchanting lens through which to view America's rise from frontier nation to an industrial superpower, with a new moneyed class hungry for recognition and status. French jewelry provided that and more. This sumptuously-designed full color bookthe first and only one on this subjectfeatures over 80 photographs of the most remarkable pieces that found their way into prominent American collections. It also showcases a brilliant array of styles. There are chapters devoted to jewelry characteristic of the Art Nouveau period, along with Art Deco, the Victorian Era, 1940s retro, and the 1960s through more contemporary styles. An added bonus: one-of-a-kind jewelry creations from notable artists such as Man Ray, Pablo Picasso, Matta, and Arman. The publication of Masterpieces of French Jewelry coincides with the National Jewelry Institute's exhibition, "Masterpieces of French Jewelry from Twentieth-Century American Collections," which will begin at The Forbes Galleries in New York in September 2006.
Customer Reviews:
The publisher should be embarassed!.......2007-06-12
As a previous reviewer stated, I also saw the "Masterpieces" exhibit at the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco last month, and it was one of the most beautiful shows I've seen at any museum in some time. As with numerous other exhibits I've had the good fortune to see over the years, I expected a good-quality book or catalogue for purchase. Was I in for a surprise with this book! It is JUST AWFUL!
The book gets it's one-star rating because the text is interesting enough, and the typeface is legible. But why does someone buy a book on jewelry in the first place? For the pictures of course, and the pictures in this book are amateurish (the most polite word I could come up with). Most of the photographs appear to have been shot straight on with a flash, no side or backlighting. The jewelry looks flat, one-dimensional, and washed out. Basically, it all looks like cheap costume jewelry. Many photos are printed against a bright, white background. They look like they were cut and pasted in low-grade photo editing software. But worst of all are the numerous shots that are out of focus. There's no excuse for this.
It's disappointing to go to such a nice exhibit and have nothing to remember it by. It amazes me that the National Jewelry Institute approved this publication. The Institute and Running Press really blew this one.
Excellent Souvenir .......2007-04-02
This book documents the astounding pieces contained in the Masterpieces of French Jewelry Exhibit at San Francisco's Palace of the Legion of Honor thru June 10, 2007.
This exhibition honors the breathtaking inspiration, unsurpassed craftmanship and variety of French jewelry from the Art Nouveau period at the beginning of the 20th century to contemporary pieces. All the jewels in the exhibition are illustrated in this inspirational book, in full color and exaggerated detail.
The exhibition begins with several lavish Art Nouveau creations by René Lalique and Georges Fouquet, moving into the Belle Epoch, Deco and Retro styles. The book and exhibit also feature original contemporary examples by Joseph Arthur Rosenthal (JAR).
Fabulous addition to a jewelry lover's library.
A welcome, popular reference........2007-02-08
Author Judith Price is President of the National Jewelry Institute: her background has long been in French art and jewelry, so she's the perfect choice to write an authoritative review and history in MASTERPIECES OF FRENCH JEWELRY. Over a hundred photos of pieces owned by Americans - most never seen by the public before - accompany historical background which covers jewelry from the late 1800s to modern times. There's a thoughtful attention to the layout on each page that juxtaposes large-size photos of pieces with good-sized, clear text descriptions and commentary. Both specialty art and jewelry libraries and more general-interest holdings will find in MASTERPIECES OF FRENCH JEWELRY a welcome, popular reference.

Not much jewelry and the gold Sterle' evening bag (the same one which our company owned and recently sold) is photographed upside down! I gave this book as a gift after one quick flip through. Should cost $5.00 (incl shipping)
Reads like a (super-swanky) in-flight magazine article.......2006-12-20
You might purchase this book for the tolerably decent photos of French jewelry, but don't expect a scholarly, in-depth discussion of the subject. Price's writing is almost laughably bad, consisting as it does of pointless, unhelpful captions ("The engraved goldwork on the front of the owl signals its use as an accessory of a refined lady.") and smarmy, gushing intros for a bunch of B- and C-list socialite collectors, including such luminaries as Actress, Producer, and One of America's Leading Motion Picture Executives Dina Merrill Hartley (daughter of Marjorie Merriweather Post--"one of the richest women in the world," we're told) and "the First Lady of Fiction" ...Barbara Taylor Bradford. When Price gets around to discussing French jewelry, the result is much like a high school report cobbled together from material cribbed from an encyclopedia entry--an effect weirdly reinforced by the publisher's decision to print the text in double-spaced format. Her observations are trite, obvious or altogether incorrect (and sometimes all three). Apparently, Price's presidency of the National Jewelry Institute (founded...oh, about last week) is qualification enough to write on the subject. Or maybe it's the fact (see dustjacket flap) that she lives in New York and "Paris, France."
Book Description
'Affairs of the Heart' is a quilt with 36 appliqud blocks on a black background, each integrating a heart motif in some manner. The blocks are intricate in appearance, yet easy enough to be tackled by novices with basic appliqu skills. Even the experts will find themselves engaged in the delicacy of the exquisite design elements and the vividness of the florals, influenced by the author's Burmese background. Aie (pronounced a) adds scrolls and scallops to her borders. The blocks are a manageable size, so each one can be completed within a single sitting. While the author made the quilt by hand with the needle-turn method, the designs lend themselves to other appliqu methods and could easily be done by machine. Using a variety of fabrics and thread colors gives depth to the design and adds to the vibrancy of the quilt. The author used printed border fabric but includes directions for achieving the same effect with appliqu. AUTHORBIO: An architect by trade, Aie (pronounced like a long A) is also skilled at drawing quilt designs. She began quilting while taking a break from her professional career to raise a family. Originally from Myanmar, formerly called Burma, Aie brings Southeast Asian influence to many of her designs and color schemes. The most recognizable aspects about the quilts she makes are their stylized, scrolled designs appliqued in bright colors on a dark background. REVIEW: Aie Rossmann's Affairs of the Heart is also a winner for all skills levels. Aie Rossmann's applique, guide blends flowing designs with vivid color schemes and almost 40 blocks linked by a heart motif. Choose this for any loving gift for Valentine's Day presentation, accenting the result with the scrolls and scallops recommended within for border accents. -Midwest Book Review

Applique Masterpiece: Affairs of the Heart .......2007-09-26
Good ideas for color and patterns. I'll find a lot to use in this book, but I would include instructions in a clear and simple manner.
Quilters Librarian.......2007-08-24
This book has every pattern well illustrated and can be used for every different kind of material. Well received from our club.
no needle-turn applique technique information.......2007-07-31
I was hoping for some helpful hints about needle-turn applique but there is absolutely nothing here about the applique process. Only instructions are about quilt construction. I was also surprised by how poorly the author does needle-turn applique. The photos clearly show poorly done, jagged curves and obvious large stitches. I can do better than this and I'm a mere novice. Interesting colors and patterns, but that's the easy part! I was disappointed in this book.
I like it!.......2006-03-18
Wonderful combination of applique and embroidery. Emboridery stiches are simple, and the applique patterns range from simple to a little more complex ( but managable ). No boredom here!
Applique Masterpiece: Affairs of the Heart.......2006-03-18
Ms Rossmann's exploration of many possibilities using a heart motif results in an array of very interesting designs, and her use of color is fascinating. However, these are unlikely patterns for a novice, since the instructions for transferring the designs and the methods she gives are archaic. A person skilled in applique can do much with the patterns. A good basic book on hand applique is recommended for others.
Book Description
Magnificent motifs reproduced from rare original edition: florals, foliates, female figures, pastoral landscapes, more. Ideas for craftspeople and designers.
Customer Reviews:
Incredible source book.......2004-09-03
If you can't find a design you can use for inspiration, you're just not looking hard enough. Not for beginners since the designs are incredibly intricate, but your creativity will wake up and take notice.
Super source book.......2004-06-05
Originally, this was a pair of portfolios of designs in the Art Nouveau period. Art Nouveau was not just twisty flowers, though some people like to stereotype it into those narrow parameters. This is not a how-to book with cutting patterns. It has only the paintings with suggested scale. On a few pages, motifs overlap each other, so you can't just scan and go: you have to build up your idea of the covered areas. One pictorial arched piece is missing the right third, again a challenge to finish it yourself.
The designs range from splendidly romantic conceptions of floral forms to windows a-scamper with squirrels or lizards to some that are distinctly eerie. Bats fly across the moon amidst dead trees. A woman combs her hair before a volcano flowing lava. An octopus and a sea-weed maiden struggle underwater--in combat? in love? Several have fishes and there are even cat designs.
You don't have to see these only as windows. I've converted two to rug designs by taking out the excess black lines of supports or piecing necessary to glass work. You may want to take only one area out of an entire design to render in wood, or do a mosaic version of the whole thing. This is a starting point for the competent craftsman who loves the Art Nouveau energy, not an end product.
Not really Art Nouveau.......2003-02-18
Though some of the designs are nice, most are way too busy for my taste, and I wouldn't really call them Art Nouveau. Quite a few of them look more like Renaissance style stained glass, and some of them look modern (like the sailboat patterns?). It is in color, though, which is nice. Very complicated - definately not for beginning stained glass crafters.
Art Noveau Stained glass-Lyongruen.......1999-12-29
Nice plates with dimensions. Good for projects and for idea's. I highly reccomend it.

Art Masterpieces to Color: 60 Great Paintings from Botticelli to Picasso.......2006-10-18
Wonderful book! I like the summaries of the artist, the orginal pictures for examples, and the amount of detail for a beginner to moderate colorer is not too much. I bought this book for myself (44 years old), Dad (82) and Mother (78). This will be the Christmas gift this year for everyone in my family.
60 Great Paintings from Botticelli to Picasso.......2005-09-20
Iknow there aren't many out there who enjoy coloring at my age, but it is a very relaxing hobby while watching TV in the evenings. This book is fun and has great variety.
Love this book.......2005-03-03
A great fun way to introduce famous art works to the young. It has a small version of each art work on the cover. Your child/student can color the art work the same or make it their own.

Instructions, diagrams for reproducing a four-poster bed, Sheraton desk, Chippendale chair, Spanish desk, Queen Anne table, and a William and Mary dressing mirror.
Customer Reviews:
Less than impressed.......2006-03-10
This book has a lot of funiture plans in it but the plans are too small with some descriptions/lengths/etc being so small you needed a magnifying glass to read them. Too many details crammed into one drawing. No color pictures. I wasn't impressed.
Excellent resource for advaned projects........2001-04-08
As with most of Gottshall's books, the projects are not for the beginner. Good knowledge of woodworking processes are necessary to build these beautiful period pieces. The finishes advocated in the book are dated but are completely appropriate for the pieces involved. Pieces of this quality deserve finishes that are reversible by our heirs and that would exclude a lot of the modern water-based and polyurethane finishes.
A valuable addition to your collection.......2000-06-30
Excellent book and a valuable reference for anyone interested in reproduction furniture. The section on finishing techniques is a bit dated, but the real value is the detailed drawings of reproduction pieces he built. Not for the beginner. The instructions are straight forward, but they require you to be comfortable with woodworking techniques. Great book.
Book Description
Marquetry, also called intarsia or inlay, is the art of creating intricate pictures and designs on furniture by skillfully cutting and fitting together thin pieces of colored wood, horn, metal, shell, and other precious materials. While this highly specialized art has its roots in ancient
times, it was popularized in the eighteenth century in France and today remains centered in Paris. This three-volume set-originally published in French and now available for the first time in English-is the most comprehensive examination to date of the techniques used by expert marqueters in
creating their exquisite masterpieces.
Masterpieces of Marquetry offers a detailed history of the medium from antiquity to the present day, illustrated with examples from the collections of museums around the world, and includes the masterpieces of some of the greatest cabinetmakers and marqueters in history. Methodically organized and
lavishly illustrated, this set is an invaluable resource for art historians, antique collectors, and dealers, as well as contemporary fine furniture makers.
Customer Reviews:
Reccomended by the accidental quilter.......2000-08-12
If you love Hawaiian quilting--this is a volume you shouldn't miss. This is not a "how to" manual. It is a history of classic Hawaiin quilts accompanied by color plates that left me spellbound. The designs are incredible and well worth study. I've held a fascination with the possible direct connection between early Hawaiian quilts and the Baltimore Album quilts of the the Eastern coast. This may be the only book with color plates of some of these beautiful early quilts that would offer clues to this connection. My favorite designs in this volume are Anthurium by Mary Manoi and Coconut and Pineapple by Meali'i Kalama. It is of no consequence to me that this is not an instructional manual as I do not anticipate ever being able to quilt one of these masterpieces. It is, however, a one of a kind book and I urge you to treat yourself while it remains in print. Mary Z. Cox
