Modern Scandinavian architecture at its best.......2006-06-12
I love Scandinavian architecture, both traditional and modern. This book has well done photographs of some of the most simply eloquent modern Scandinavian homes. It makes you want to live in one of these most appealing dwellings. Every so often I look through the book once more and enjoy the beautifully photographed exteriors and interiors of the homes all over again.
200+ Pictures of Functional and Beautiful Interiors........2004-07-26
The first time I went to Scandinavia, I arrived in Helsinki late in the evening. I went to my hotel, and in the first few minutes I understood what was so special about Scandinavian design. The otherwise ordinary hotel room stood out as one of the best I have ever seen. It was not a tremendously expensive hotel, rather middle of the road. But simple things: the door, the faucets in the bathroom, the furniture, all were so much more elegant looking than what we find in the United States.
Now I'm in the process of designing a house. I went looking for a book on interior design that would reflect what I had seen there. I found several, but this one shows more elements of design that reflect what I like. Simple things, like an office table. Easy enough to find, once I knew what I was looking for. A bed: simple, elegant, and better looking than anything I've seen in other publications.
If you're looking for something for yourself or if you're doing a Scandinavian home for a customer I highly recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
A Special House.......2006-09-02
What a visual treat this book was. For anyone that has seen a painting of Carl Larsson's home and fallen in love with the clean lines and colors of Scandinavian interiors, this book carries that love to the next level. Wisconsin native Loran Nordgren created a home using the traditional elements like built-in beds, carving, colors, but added some contemporary conveniences. The books chronicles the planning and construction of the house, but the wealth of photos and design ideas have wide appeal.
Scandinavian Delights.......2004-12-15
I give Mr. Nordgren the owner high credit for the obvious mega $$$ he spent to have his Carl Larsson dream home come to life. However I concur with a prior reviewer that the interior decorating is sub-par with oversized furniture & decorator pieces that evoke a Non-Scandinavian feel that appears to conflict with its authetic Scandinavian backdrop of the houses interior details. If it was my money $$$ I would have sought out correct period Scandinavian antiques or had authentic pieces recreated from scratch with a 100% effort to create the Nordic "look". Would recommend the book as a strong buy with great design ideas throughout.
Fantastic read.......2004-09-21
As a lover of the traditional Scandinavian home style, and the owner of four such homes, I found this book truly helpful in decorating all of them. The authors, including Ms. Sears have such an passionate eye for this unique and gorgeous style.
An American Take on the Swedish Style Home.......2003-06-22
This is an excellent pictoral review of a lovely home recently built in the Wisconsin countryside. The book is full of great ideas for both interior and especially exterior architectural details. As an interior and architectural designer, I have stolen ideas extensively for a Scandinavian style home I am working on which is currently under construction. The house featured in the book is beautifully done, but not for those seeking a subtle take on the Swedish/Scandinavian home. Disneyesque could aptly describe the overall look and feel of the home. This is not to say it does not have a great charm, but it slams its design concepts home with no punches pulled. It is an American interpretation and distillation of Scandinavia.
There are a lot of great ideas for color and design for the built interiors, but I found the interior furnishings and accessories to be ameteurish and do not live up to the professional standard of the architecture that contains it. The furnishings are rather middle of the road contemporary country style and do not suit the carefully orchestrated design concepts of the architectural designer. For instance the sofas are large and clunky, and are upholstered in a bland fabric - none of which would ever been found in a house of this type of traditional Swedish home.
With that caveat I highly recommend the book to those who admire the Scandinavian style and especially to anyone planning to design and build a home in this style.
Scandinavian Interior Design.......2001-12-18
As a folk artist, I am interested in European interior design. My interest in Swedish design lies in the magnificient use of color. This book provided what I needed.

Country living has evolved into an international style that celebrates rural pleasures and the simple life. Book Description
This in-depth profile of Scandinavian-style woodcarving includes a history of the style's use in American and Scandinavian art, biographies of great carvers in the genre, and detailed instructions for a variety of projects. Directions, front and sideview patterns, and step-by-step photographs reveal how to make a few simple cuts and leave large flat planes intact. The lively personalities of such typical Scandinavian figures as Oskar and a traditional Swedish folk art horse are charmingly rendered in the samples and projects included.
Customer Reviews:
Not for aspiring beginners starting from scratch.......2007-09-05
I completely agree with a previous costumer which rated 1 star. While this book can be a shallow photo catalog of scandinavian style figures, it is certainly not real help for the aspiring beginner (the "where-to-find-the- knive" and "how-to-hold-it" issues, for example). I guess one could get similar results by researching photographs through library books or Internet and try to make the whole thing alone.
In an effort to recover some background of artisans related with such carving style through history, mixed with the author's personal idea of the reader gaining expertise with around 40 patterns (which, by the way, are not worth their printed space through 20 good quality paper pages in this book), based only in two previos detailed examples, the author fails in making a final product to cover seriously both issues.
A nice marketing strategy, but a great mistake in trusting Harley Refsal and Fox CHapel Publishing for the next woodcarving related choices.
Not recommended.
Misleading Cover, Useless for the Beginner.......2007-05-31
The cover of this book says "Step-by-Step Instructions & Patterns for 40 Flat-Plane Carving Projects".
What it should say is "Step-by-Step Instructions For 2 Projects, & Patterns for 40 more".
In this 120 page book, there are less that 20 pages of step-by-step instructions. Two projects are covered (I admit, in detail and with good photos) but there is no foundation whatsoever for those 20 pages. What kind of knife do you use? How do you hold it? What strokes are used for carving? What do you need to know about cutting with or across the grain? None of these questions are answered in this book. If you are a beginner picking up this book, you will be completely lost.
The section on the history and practitioners of Scandinavian woodcarving takes up the majority of this book. While it is somewhat interesting, that is not why I bought the book.
Detailed Instruction from a World Famous Master.......2007-01-15
This is the best and most detailed book you are going to find on the subject of Flat-Plane carving. The photos are bright and the steps clear enough to not leave you hanging (avoids being a very frustrated beginner.) For those of you lucky enough, Harley still teaches classes in the upper midwest and occasionally at our nations craft houses. What I learned most about Harley's methods, is you really don't need a bucket full of hand tools. Every thing is done with a knife. Finding his particular knife is not easy. A sturdy bench knife will do just fine. I never carved a thing in my life until I picked up this book. I followed along and eventually discovered what the photo was telling me. Now after carving some more and reading other authors, I can really appreciate the time they took on this book.
Harley Refsal's Latest.......2004-12-29
This book is a revision of the 1992 classic by Harley Refsal. The new book is a larger format with a lot more color. My previous copy had been getting pretty dog-eared so the new one came along just in time. For those of you who may not be familiar with Harley's previous work, his is the foremost publication that describes the history and methods of "Scandinavian Flat Plane Carving". In my opinion, Scandinavia is the origin of the genre that we all love and call caricature carving.
The new book has added a section on carving and finishing the Dalcarlian Horse - the classic horse carved in Sweden for almost two centuries. The demonstration of Flat-Plane figure carving is of Harley's Oskar, an immigrant-era figure. The instruction is extremely detailed and about like having Harley over your shoulder taking you through the entire process. A number of new patterns have been added to this edition.
If I had a limit on the carving books in my collection, (and thank goodness I don't have) Harley Refsal's would be one of the select few.
Easily the Best Carving Book Available.......2004-10-14
Harley's new book builds on his previous book on Scandinavian woodcarving, but he adds much more both in the area of carving and the history of carving. There is the old familiar Oskar but there is also a Scandinavian horse. There is additional information in the history area, a section on painting, as well as an expanded section on patterns. The photography is in color and quite detailed. If you are a wood carver, this book will be a wonderful addition to your woodcarving library.

Customer Reviews:
Nice collection of viking designs.......2005-09-16
A fair, but not terribly comprehensive collection (but then maybe I'm just spoiled by George Bain's "Celtic Art: The Methods Of Construction," which IS terribly comprehensive). All designs in this book are taken directly from viking artifacts, but drawn in bold black line drawings for easy tracing, copying, or whatever else you want to use them for.
I nice addition to my celtic/nordic art library.
Terrible waste of time and money.......2005-05-30
Furiously disappointed with this book, the contents of which are basically 44 pictures in black and white (and not greyscale, but solid black, and the white of the paper) of typical scandinavian patterns. There are 4 pages at the front talking of the history in general but nothing specific for each of the pictures.
The purpose of this book seems to be for people to transfer the images onto something else (by tracing etc..) but really, there is little substance to it, and you could find better pictures with a simple google search.
This book would have been far better with detailed explanations of the diagrams, their origins, photos of originals and greyscale, or dare I ask, colour. A great opportunity missed by the author. As it stands, it is worth approximately $2.00 only, with free postage.
A vastly superior work is "the Dragon and the Griffin" which is a 160 page book that details the elements of the designs and the progress through time.
I hate to have posted such a negative review but wish to save people the waste of time and money I endured due to the other favorable reviews, which I suspect were friends of the author.
A unique and welcome contribution .......2005-04-10
The Nordic folk of Scandinavia were noted throughout Europe for their love of embellishment with respect to their boats, door posts, weapons, jewelry, and other accouterments of the Viking lifestyle and culture. Fabled animal and bird forms were among the favored types of decorative motifs, appearing in highly stylized, easily recognized imagery which was gradually incorporated into Celtic art styles as well. In Ancient Scandinavian Designs, Bev Ulsrud Van Berkom has gathered together an arrangements of designs drawn from surviving artifacts of Scandinavian culture from the 7th to the 12th centuries A.D., making it a unique and welcome contribution to personal, professional, art school, and academic library Scandinavian Art & Cultural History collections. Also very highly recommended art design titles from the Stemmer House Publishers "International Design Library" collections are: Rebecca Mckillip's Celtic Designs (0916144755, $6.95); Frances M. Bradbury's Faience Designs (0880450568, $5.95); and Silvia Crockett's Angels In Traditional Design (0880-45086X, $5.95).
excellant source.......2000-04-02
This book is an excellant source for Scandinavian designs, usefull for art work and illistration. But I found it did not meet my needs for stenciling and interior designs. Great for Rose mauling techniques.
