5 out of 5 stars This is a reference book, not an adventure novel.......2007-01-18

I purchased this to study for the CDT exam. It is very complete, but reads (as you'd expect) more like a specification than a textbook. Five stars for completeness, and five stars for cure for insomnia.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent counterpart to the AIA Handbook........2007-01-07

First off, I'm an architect, so my review is written from that perspective.

This is a great companion to the AIA Handbook. If the AIA Handbook is about running a firm, the CSI PRM is about running a project. An oversimplification, yes, but both books are so dense and full of critical information, no 100 word review could do either justice.

The CD includes many useful references including an overview of MasterFormat and a list of divisions / sections, but does not include the entire MasterFormat "product" (the full MF product includes 95-04 conversion tools and additional documentation).

My only complaint is that the text is so dense it takes a lot of time and energy to absorb all of the information within. :) It's as if they took a 1000 page tome and compressed it into 300 pages. (The product description says 1200 pages, but it's only an inch thick, so I'm guessing 300 pp.)

A must-have for architects who strive to deliver projects in a more expert and professional manner, and wish to more effectively interface with contractors during the construction phase. If you're a pure "designer" or only involved with the front end of projects this will probably stay on the shelf, but if you're responsible for the rest of the process (DD through construction and occupancy) this book is essential.

I can't believe I made it through 6 years of architectural education without being required to own this book.

      5 out of 5 stars Invaluable Reference.......2002-09-10

This is an invaluable reference. I've been searching for weeks for materials related to noise control in a residential setting. I've found only one "expert" in the yellow pages and he charges hundreds for his advice. This book provides all of the information he provided and more. Although, the editing isn't great and there are typos and other errors, the content is first-rate. For once, this book was exactly what I expected.

          Book Description

Teacher Under Construction: Things I Wish I'd Known! is an indispensable survival manual for any teacher wishing to enter the wonderful world of middle schoolers! It provides practical, essential, and usable information to help new teachers set up and run a classroom, motivate students, and understand the unique setting that is "middle school". Crucial elements discussed include:

Teacher Under Construction: Things I Wish I'd Known! is designed for Pre-service and new teachers. Helps are presented in a handy, quick-reference format. This is the book every experienced middle school teacher wishes they'd had their first year of teaching!

"Jerry has succeeded in describing the delicate balance between the technical-organizational aspects of teaching, and the relational, humanistic characteristics of the profession. It is gratifying to know that 'common sense' still plays a big part in the field of education."
--Dave Shepard, Middle Matters, former vice president of the Kentucky Middle School Association

"...an incredible blueprint for someone starting his or her career! Not only that, but...a great resource for teachers trying to improve their teaching and classroom management skills...needs to be used in college teacher-prep programs."
--Tommy Hurt, Principal, The Georgetown Middle School

"Dr. Jerry Parks truly understands teaching and learning at the middle school level. Teacher Under Construction: Things I Wish I'd Known! is a wonderful reading for beginning and experienced middle school teachers!"
--Dr. Dallas Blankenship, Superintendent, Scott Schools, Georgetown, KY

NOTE: I am submitting this as a copy of the review from AvanteGuard Teacher's website, since it is what I might say.

TOP PICK: If I'd had Teacher Under Construction, a book written specifically for middle-school teachers, I suspect I would have gotten more sleep, fewer headaches, and organized my time more effectively. This book is a must-have gem for the new or initially-licensed middle-school teacher. Your pedagogy classes don't cover this stuff, and it seems that too few resources are dedicated to the squirrelly (but infinitely fun) middle schooler. (TOP FIVE AvantGarde Teacher Review)

5 out of 5 stars "Got this college student prepared. Thank you!".......2007-08-06

Dr. Parks' book "Teacher Under Construction" is great! I am currently in college now to major in mid-level social studies and English. This little book really opened my eyes to the things I should prepare for. I am quite nervous about teaching but now I am more confident. Thank you for writing this, Dr. Parks! Tessa Suzanne White

5 out of 5 stars "This is practicality par excellence...a must for every new middle school teacher!".......2007-08-04

Far removed from educational philosophy and pedantic educational theory, this little gem is a mine of practical teaching helps for new middle school teachers, drawn from the author's many years 'in the trenches'.

A book is only as good as the author's understanding of his/her subject, and one has only to read "What is a middle schooler?" on page one to understand that this author knows what middle school is all about.

The book has some helpful checklists, sample parent letters, and what to do on the first day of school. Even as an experienced teacher, I still found a few things helpful. But make no mistake, this book is aimed squarely at new middle school teachers. It has been used in countless university educational prep courses, and while not of the scope of some more publicized tomes, it addresses every aspect of cogent information a new teacher should know--from legal aspects, to seating logistics, to teaming.

A wonderful and helpful book. But "What is a middle schooler?" is the crowning touch.

5 out of 5 stars "Truly, written by an author with a Middle Schooler's heart! 'What is a Middle Schooler?' alone is worth the price!".......2006-10-08

After reading the reviews on here, but having a hard time locating this book in bookstores, I ordered it at my local bookstore in order to give it to my education-major daughter graduating this year. Since she will be teaching middle school (as did I), I recognized she would need all the help she could get!

Well, after perusing the book when it arrived, I can say this. While I could have told her most of the advice given in the book, I couldn't have said it as well, and I certainly couldn't have packaged it so nicely. (Neither would she ever consider her mother an 'expert'!)

This little gem is just wonderful.

Before I evaluate a book, I always evaluate the author. The fact that Mr. Parks was a multi "Teacher of the Year" honoree did not impress me. But from the moment I read the introductory poem: "What is a Middle Schooler?" (NOT the Eldridge Park version!), I was sold on the fact that THIS author truly knows middle schoolers, and that I could trust his advice to their (future) teachers. That little poem now hangs copied and framed on my daughter's classroom wall, and it never fails to bring a smile and a tear to everyone who reads it.

As for the book, yes, it should be required reading in every middle school methods class. By the time a new teacher gets that first position, he/she is too busy. I especially liked the 5-10-15-20 rule of classroom time management, as I did the chapter: 'In Loco Parentis'--information not stressed nearly enough today. Also, the appendices furnish innumerable helps on: the first day of school reminders, what to have in the room, sample parent letters, etc.

In short, the book is short on philosophy and long on practicality.

But I enjoyed "What is a Middle Schooler?" more than anything else. That was truly written from the heart of a middle school teacher, and any book written by such cannot help but be invaluable to any teacher who is dedicating his/her life to working with them.

Also good for veteran teachers (by the same author): "So, You Want to be a NBPTS Candidate?" and "Mentoring the NBPTS Candidate: a Facilitator's Guide", and for Christians: "God, Help Me Pray!".

5 out of 5 stars "Opened my eyes to what I should prepare for!".......2006-08-23

1 out of 5 stars Unprofessional Mediocre Work.......2007-08-18

The author of this book indirectly calls the reader cluck, uses the word loser and that's just in chapter one of the 4th edition. I maybe young, but I refute this sort of garbage. You can't smile at anything that has this putrid element. People like Popham induce students to have low self-esteem and probably become criminals. It's shocking to know that a well-known publishing company and God-knows how many universities require this book for their students. Does Popham want us future teachers to call our students CLUCKS! This is outrageous! This makes our educational system appear like a circus. I don't care how proficient an English teacher Popham is, in my book, Popham is an anti-educator. Inferior mental processes have no space in our schools. I choose to be an educator not a CLUCK!!!

5 out of 5 stars If you want to see improvement in your student's progress you've gotta get this book!!!!.......2007-07-14

Before reading this book, I was at a loss in my classroom as to how to use assessments to monitor progress, evaluate my instructional methods, and to be sure that students were mastering the content. Mr. Popham gives precise research based strategies to do ALL these things and MORE. Most books on assessment are dry and so dense you loathe having to read them but Mr. Popham exceeded my expectations in this respect. I don't know how he did it but the text is informational and humorous at the same time. I actually laughed out loud at some of his expressions...I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! I would suggest this text for any school district that wants to understand the fallibility of standardized/high-stakes tests and wants to be sure that students learn the content represented on these tests and not just how to take the test.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and funny.......2007-06-27

I'm writing this in response to a couple of other reviewers who didn't like the author's writing style. I'm currently using this book for a class, and I'm thrilled to actually be enjoying a textbook for a change. I find the comments hilarious. In addition, the book offers good, practical advice, with very little useless background information. I'm finding this book a totally refreshing change from what I've been subjected to in education textbooks so far.

            Book Description

Best practice is the concern of this book. An architect has to be an administrator as well as designer, and smooth economical administration will provide the conditions under which client relations can be constructive and good design can be acheived.

The book is divided into 76 short sections covering the entire process, from preliminary enquiries to final fees, each with a small flow chart showing who is involved and when.

This sixth revised edition updates the contents in line with present day practice, bearing in mind the changes in terminology, technology, environmental demands and the legislative background.

Ronald Green and Professor Ross Jamieson who writes the foreword to this edition, are both examiners for Part Three.

We speak English & use the Metric System in the rest of the World.

When will American publishers discover this ?

This book requires me to convert every single worked example to the units used by the rest of the world.

I suggest that they publish the worked examples on a CD with book using the units that he rest of the world use !!!

            1 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor.......2006-02-08

The second chapter is the nuts and bolts of financing equipment. The numbers are commonly wrong. There are WAY to many mistakes. This is a textbook for a heavy equipment class. It's the third week of the semester (Fresno State) and we're dying...

1 out of 5 stars No attention to detail.......2003-06-02

This book had so many errors, the entire class including the instructor were confused. It is very sad to see a textbook in its fifth or sixth edition with so many mistakes. Many of the questions at the end of the chapter are so poorly written, that there was no solution. Clearly, the authors had a goal and a message to convey, but because there was no attention to detail, the message was muddy at best. I remain disenchanted with the general quality of textbooks, but this is one of the worst examples of a textbook I have ever seen. Come on America, educate!
