Customer Reviews:
Not good to me.......2007-08-23
One reviewer says is the best book for this application. But I found only this one. It's sad. The application is great, but this book didn't help me as I expected. I don't get a good guide through the overwhelming options and settings that the software has. I doesn't answer why of anything. What is it this one setting or how should we make better use of controls other than trial & error. It's all mixted up. Images inserted in the book very often not related to the explanation, but out of place or redundant. In a word, i didn't like it.
Paint Shop Pro XI Lesson Book.......2007-08-20
I bought the book and learned some of the basic stuff I was missing. I would like to see the lessons go a lot deeper. I was totally disappointed in the lack of photo restoration lessons for old photos. What was given was minor to say the least. I am very interested in some larger lessons on restoring old photos.
Great Supplementary Guidebook for PSP XI.......2007-08-13
These folks have been producing excellent supplementary guides for several versions of PaintShop Pro. I've been using the application for YEARS, and it still provided very good additional tips and tricks, techniques, explanation of new features or things that I hadn't used yet, etc., etc. I've given to a number of friends that are just getting their feet wet in Digital Editing when they want to more than "the BASICS" with the applications that came with their camera, but they weren't ready to go to Photoshop by a long shot. All of them have appreciated the "jump-start" that this gave them
paint shop pro 11.......2007-07-21
A very concise book, covering all the facets associated with the paint shop pro program.
With this book along with the one that comes with the software is all that is required to work with the programme
Just what I was looking for!.......2007-07-15
Pretty easy to follow and very helpful. It had most of what I was looking for. Too bad there wasnt an instructional DVD to go along with it!

Book Description
Window shopping
In postwar America, everything pointed to a bright, shiny future. Sheer optimism and opulence informed everything from automobile design to architecture, infusing design with larger-than-life planes and curves. Storefront design of the era is particularly indicative of this phenomenon, incarnated here in an extensive collection of hand-illustrated shop window designs from 1938 to 1950. These spectacular, often grandiose plans for grocery stores, shoe shops, beauty salons, bakeries, and more are reminders of a time when stores were sacred shrines for the congregation of American shoppers--impressive and even slightly intimidating, just like the future itself. Collected for this unique book, the designs viewed in retrospect reveal the mindset of a unique period in history. In addition to an extensive selection of drawings are historical black and white photographs of actual shops built in a similar style. Shop America offers a rare look at mid-century commercial America as it pictured itself.
Customer Reviews:
disappointing.......2007-06-16
I was disappointed in this book. The best picture is the one on the cover. Inside, each selection is pretty much the same. "Style suggestion for a florist shop," "Style suggestion for a shoe store," etc. Has diagrams and font types, window measurements, etc. All tech stuff that's not really interesting to me. I would have returned it, but didn't want to mess with the shipping. Sigh.
American Business Embraces Modernism.......2007-04-29
In the midst of the Great Depression, American Business adopted an American form of modernism that heralded a new age of technology and progress. This period of design history is sometimes called, "Machine Age", "Streamline Modern" or "Midcentury Modern." This belief in the spirit of progress can be seen in almost all American design of this period.
"Shop America" adds to our understanding of the time by focusing on store front design. American glass companies produced beautifully illustrated catalogs that promoted the use of glass and modern building materials. These catalogs inspired architects and small business owners to create store fronts that embraced the progressive spirit of modernism.
When many of us think of the 1940's and 1950's, we think of a conformist age best understood by old television shows like Ozzie and Harriet and Father Knows Best. However, a book like "Shop America" also demonstrates that American business and consumers of the time were willing to adopt a bold modernist vision. Although the designs in these books are 50-60 years old, they are still very fresh and exciting.
This book was produced by the German Publisher, Taschen. Like all Taschen books it is a very good value. It is a large format book with very high production values. This book is a must purchase for all enthusiasts of the period as well as for contemporary architects and designers. Highly recommended.
Streamline meets Atomic on Main.......2007-03-18
Turn the pages of this fascinating book and you're window shopping on Main Street in the late forties, plenty of consumer goods are just a touch away thanks to large glass windows. The essence of the book is more than ninety ideas for storefronts created by the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company. Each has an artists rendering, sometimes a technical detail or floor plan and technical information about the glass used.
It is the exuberant artwork that makes the book come alive. They capture a mid-century of elegant shoppers seduced by Carrara glass and Aluminum. Virtually every store has an overall streamline design frequently mixing atomic motifs and the final individual touch is the name in a modern sans type or a casual script for a ladies retail unit. Strangely there is no actual reference to the Pittsburgh PGC or the artists though E A Lundberg has his signature on many of the illustrations.
This is a large book (handsomely designed and printed) that fortunately makes all the wonderful renderings large too. In the first few pages Steve Heller contributes an overview of storefront design illustrated with black and white photos of real stores in large American cities. Predictably few of them are as flamboyant as the concept artwork in the glass-makers sales material.

A visual feast of art, music, and design for devoted fans of the Pet Shop Boys and for anyone interested in popular culture.
The Pet Shop Boys are one of the most influential pop acts ever. With number-one singles such as "West End girls," "It's a sin," and "Go west," numerous gold- and platinum-selling albums such as Please, Actually, and Very, and hundreds of thousands of fans around the world, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe are the most successful British writing duo since Lennon and McCartney.
Spanning the worlds of music, art, film, and theater, the Pet Shop Boys have collaborated with some of the biggest stars of pop, including David Bowie, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Liza Minnelli, and Tina Turner; composers such as Ryuichi Sakamoto and Angelo Badalamenti; and leading artists, designers, and architects such as Yoko Ono, Zaha Hadid, Wolfgang Tillmans, Martin Parr, and Sam Taylor-Wood.
Celebrating the twentieth anniversary of their first album and coinciding with a new album and a major world tour, this book is a lavish visual retrospective of Tennant and Lowe's career. Every aspect of their work is featured: elegantly designed sleeve artwork and packaging; stills and behind-the-scenes shots from every video, film, concert, and theater show; experimental stage sets and cutting-edge fashion and costume designs; collaborations; publications; merchandising; photo shoots; and even their personally designed invitations and Christmas cards.

Catalogue - A Silver Age.......2007-07-25
With 14 reviews already written, I doubt I can say anything that hasn't already been said. But I will give a short review of my impression of Catalogue.
This book is more like Pet Shop Boys history in pictures. While it's true this is a catalogue of all the album and CD covers. It is also the history of Pet Shop Boys in a brief chronology near the back of the book. It gives a time line of what they were doing on particular dates.
There's also an interview from April 2006 with Neil and Chris by Chris Heath. It also includes a complete in depth discography of all their singles and albums they released.
The silver cover of the book makes a great coffee table attraction. It's a must for any Pethead's collection. It's also a great reference book for new fans of the boys. For those who never subscribed to the fan club will enjoy looking at the various Christmas Cards and cover art of the fan club magazine Literally.
I purchased multiple copies so I could have one on display and to thumb through and one is kept sealed. At this great price, who could resist?
Pet Shop Boys Catalogue
The perfect retrospective of a stellar career...so faf........2007-05-17
You can easily forget that Chris and Neil, Pet Shop Boys have been making fantastic music together for close to 30 years now. This large volume is an authoritative visual representation of what the PSB have done throughout their career. If there is one problem (not really) it would be that since they Boys are still active, the book will be outdated nearly immediately following its publication.
Its fun to see all the international releases, versions, one-off items that have come from their musical output, from singles to albums to videos to other books. Catalogue is comprehensive to say the least. And the photos are many, and all relatively great quality.
This is a true gift to the real PSB fans. It is sort of like your own personal scrapbook if you've been following the Boys through the years or a wonderful collection to introduce newer fans to the career that Neil and Chris have enjoyed. Price seems more than reasonable for the quality of the book. The cover is stunning and makes a great conversation piece for your coffee table. It just sort of begs to be opened with its silvery cover image.
Pet Shop Boys fans should be thrilled that such a volume exists and that the artists have seen fit to offer something of this scale. So many bands, defunct or ongoing seem to spurn their fans requests for such items. In this case, no matter what the intent of the artist--whether purely self indulgence or wanting to give back, the fans who purchase this book are the winners.
Love this book. Love the Boys. And most importantly, Love the music they continue to release. Left to your own devices, you probably will buy this book.
Perfect.......2007-04-09
This book is beautifully packed and chronicles the product of the pet shop boys for the first 20 years. It includes album/single covers, tours, costumes, videos, etc. It is worth every penny and a true companion for any psb fan!
magnificent visual retrospective.......2007-03-09
Pet Shop Boys Catalogue is exactly what it says it is: a stunning and definitive record of every piece of visual material that has accompanied every one of their releases over their 20 plus year recording career. It comes complete with insightful comment from the Boys and the various designers, in particular Mark Farrow with whom they have enjoyed a long-standing, very successful collaboration. Over the years every piece of PSB design has betrayed their design sensibilities and their brilliant understanding of how the visual medium complements the aural when it comes to a full appreciation of their work. And here it is all laid out in full color; in chronological order for us to enjoy. As well as all the CD/LP cover art are stills from videos, intimate looks at each of their concert tour concepts, previous photo books, the fan club magazine, etc. etc. As if we really needed reminding, this collection stands as a testament to how much "art" has always been involved in the Pet Shop Boys' work.

Read this first.......2005-09-23
Being slightly famillar with a older versiion of Paint Shop I felt I still needed the basic instructions that Dummies gives.
I was not disappointed. I am also using "Paint Shop Pro 9 Photographers Guide" and with the two I am becoming well on my way to a Pro at Paint Shop Pro
Good general purpose aide........2005-08-31
This book is a great entry level aide to understanding the workings of Paint Shop. However, it is an all inclusive aide so anyone who is looking to use Paint Shop merely for the purposes of photo editing will not find much of use inside this help. But, it can open your eyes to what is possible with Paint Shop and get your foot in the door to anything new.
as good as Photoshop for many tasks.......2005-08-07
Well Paint Shop Pro 9 is not the latest Photoshop. But Kay reveals that Paint Shop can do many of the common tasks available in Photoshop. Common image editing, like resizing images, tweaking the colour maps and so on, are just as easy in Paint Shop. As you might expect, there is a layer model of images, that lets you have overlay planes and manipulate objects in each. [You may already be familiar with the idea from Photoshop.]
A reasonable question then is why choose Paint Shop? If your graphics needs are not complex, and Paint Shop is cheaper, perhaps that's the way you should go.
And of course, as befits this series of books, the narrative is very informal, to put you at ease.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book, great designs!.......2007-06-13
As a novice beader, I found this book incredibly useful. It's laid out very well, very descriptive in the instructions, and had gorgeous pictures to boot. I also love that the book has much more creative projects than just jewelry. Highly recommended - a great gift for a fellow bead enthusiast!
Beautiful, creative projects.......2007-04-20
I love this book. Each project is more creative and beautiful than the last. It's hard to know which to start with - you want to do them all. In addition to the expected jewelry projects (all of them gorgeous), you also find martini sticks, tassels, a doorway curtain, napkin rings and buttons. The "Beading Basics" section goes beyond the basics and is very comprehensive.
Truly a valuable book for any beader.
Like going into a beadshop.......2007-01-20
None of the stores are known to me and almost none of the designers. What interests me today is beadweaving and there are some really nice projects here. Each project gives the technique, list of beads required and interesting information on the shop which presented the item. There's a spiral necklace, peyote rings bracelet, peyote cuff by Shanigan, beaded beads bracelet with tubular right angle weave, herringbone bracelet, ladder stitch necklace, necklace in spiral stitch variation, necklace in netting, beaded sampler in loomwork, wire crochet necklace with earrings, brooch with herringbone and peyote stitch, dragonfly in ladder stitch, doorway dangles in stringing technique, poinsettias bracelet in peyote stitch, necklace with ladder st and tubular herringbone st, buttons in netting. If this book is like the same publisher's Knitter's stash, then I will be returning to it time and again and also expect to see more work from the designers included here. I didn't mention all of the projects but in the future I may find them interesting also. Only problem is now to find those 111 daggers!
delivered on-time and wasd as advertised.......2007-01-16
book was in excellent confition (mew) and received in a time;y manner
Gorgeous, Exciting Book with a Great Jewelry Design Concept.......2006-12-30
I must admit my first love in books, as a jewelry designer, is jewelry design books. I look for the ones which have pizzazz and are well thought out. I look for the ones which excite my imagination. I really like ones with quality paper and good layouts, as I am a perfectionist myself when I design my jewelry.
This book, BEADER'S STASH, fulfills all my requirements and then it adds so much more, in that it actually offers a cool new concept in jewelry design books. It presents designs which bead stores from all over the world (the author, Levaas, even lists the honor role of stores which presented designs but unfortunately didn't get chosen in the "blind choosing" by a panel of jurors). The designs which did get chosen are fantastic, the stores are described in a short but well written sidebar in each case, so you can imagine each one vividly, and the designers are also discussed. The photos RULE and the sense of being in an environment where fun is the point is just a great addition to the ambience of the book. I recognized many of my favorite stores, including Beadshop. Janice Parsons' lush and outstanding use of color and design principle in her necklace "Gems of the Earth" blew me away. There are seed beed offerings, such as the one from store Bead Culture: the "Patterned Peyote Rings Bracelet" by Katrina Kimpell. It is REALLY pretty. There are so many I find it hard to choose what I liked most! Bead Works Inc. "Femme Fatale Collar" by Kathy Mamat is very sensuous and earthy. I loved that one, too!
You just have to wander through this book as if you were taking a walk through a bead store. Believe me, it is worth it. Some of these designs look as if they should be in museums, but not in the sense that they are "please don't touch me" designs. Just in the sense that they are so lovely and so worth your time.
I plan to try one or two, or three or four, as soon as I can. Until then, I will page through this book again and again and delight in the photos and information it brings me from all over the world!

Best concise shop design book out now........2005-01-05
This is the best concise shop design book out now in my opinion. It covers quite a few areas in detail like lighting, adding a wood floor on top of concrete, dust collection issues, various layouts, essential tools, and more that make it an essential book. Aim high in making your shop as good as any tool you have or project you make. This book encourages that and helps you make wise, cost-effective decisions.
