Book Description

A few years ago, decorative painter Sunny Goode created Sunny’s Goodtime Paints with a single goal in mind: giving everyone the means to reproduce the beauty of old fresco plaster, stone walls, or glazed finishes in their own homes. Paint Can!—a lavishly illustrated, inspiring, and instructive primer on how to add decorative flourishes with paint—is the next logical step in her mission. She offers a complete on-the-page course called “Paint 101” and explains just what paint can do, from highlighting architectural details to making small rooms appear larger. And almost every technique is here: colorwashing, working freehand, stenciling, glazing, imitating stoneblock, and adding patterns to a surface. It’s the simple way to add color and personality to every room.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource and beautifully photographed!.......2007-03-08

I LOVE THIS BOOK! We all want to make the right choice when redecorating. Sunny Goode is very experienced and has put her vast knowledge and creativity into beautiful printed pages and easy-to-follow directions. I have done several faux finishing wall/room projects in the past so most of the "how to" sections were a review or variation on techniques. What I loved was the additional ideas and use of stencils. I'll use this book for years!

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2006-11-03

This book is completely unique among the knitting books I've read. It's not a pattern book, not an instruction book, and not a book of nice feel-good knitting stories. It's a lot of good advice from a seasoned knitter and yarn store owner. Reading this book, one learns about knitting basics, knitting groups, knitting gifts, knitwear design, and a bunch of other topics. A purely enjoyable and helpful book, I would highly recommend it to any level of knitter.

5 out of 5 stars Explore the diverse world of knitting.......2004-11-29

This book serves as a map to the world of the handknitter. It isn't a travelogue -- you won't stay long in one location or learn too many of the details -- but you will get the bird's eye view. She deals with charity knitting, a big area for many knitters. She deals with specialty techniques such as instarsia in a simple cotton bag. She deals with knitting in the modern age with patterns for things such as a palm pilot cover and information on web sites and knitting mailing lists.

If you are a beginner or intermediate knitter, buy this book, read it to learn what you can this go round and put it aside. Take it out in a year or so and read it again. As you progress as a knitter, you will find more to learn and gleen from this book. You won't get tired of it any time soon.

4 out of 5 stars Good resource.......2004-03-12

This book is a great resource for those of us interested in the history of knitting, the feel of knitting, the type of fibers used, and much more information. But, don't think it'll teach you how to knit. I think there are much better books out there to "teach" knitting. This is a book letting you realize that you aren't alone in your love for knitting. It's a delightful quick read.

4 out of 5 stars Great for the advanced beginner, not bad for an old hand.......2002-02-05

I bought this book on a whim (it cost just the amount I needed to qualify for free shipping) and then read the reviews. My heart sunk a little when one of the reviewers said the book was only for beginners. I've been knitting for over 30 years and teach advanced classes. Had I wasted my money? No.

I've been reading "The Joy of Knitting" a chapter at a time and really enjoying it. The book consists of twelve chapters. Each chapter has ten to fifteen pages of thoughtful prose followed by a project/pattern. The heart of the book is the prose. The topics include knitting how to sections about fiber, color, and texture. What sets this book apart from the others are the wonderful chapters on the greater essence of knitting -- the history of knitting; knitting groups; tricks on knitting gifts; knitting resources on the internet; computer design; the internationalization of knitting (i.e. the recent interest in Russian shawls, Latvian mittens, etc.) and a final chapter on knitting to improve the world.

The patterns include a simple mobius scarf, watch cap, socks, a palm pilot cover, Latvian mittens and seven others.

This isn't a book for novices but is a perfect book for the newly "hooked" knitter who wants to know more about the greater universe of this wonderful hobby. Even as a veteran, I learned more than enough to justify the cost of the book and will urge my local store owner to carry the book.

5 out of 5 stars Truly a joy.......2002-01-04

Ms Myers has it right: knitting at this point in our history is more than the necessity it was for our ancestors; knitting is something we do to give pleasure to ourselves and others, and it's a way of connecting with our community and with our past. While this book isn't a total guide to knitting, that's not a drawback. There are plenty of other all-inclusive how-to books (Vogue's Guide to Knitting, Knitting Without Tears, and Knitting in Plain English are my three basic reference works)and there's always your friendly local knitting shop for hands-on assistance. Really, The Joy of Knitting fills another niche: it provides some basic instruction, a few simple projects to give you a push to get started, and quite of bit of information and encouragement. I've been knitting off and on for a number of years, but would classify myself as a beginner (more enthusiasm than skill). This book got me going again - it reminded me of why I began knitting in the first place and why I enjoy it. I knit for my own pleasure (for the joy of creating something); I knit for the pleasure of those I love (thinking of them while I'm working on the project and reveling in their amazement over the finished piece); I knit to feel a part of history (following in the footsteps of my mother and grandmothers); and I knit because I'm part of a larger community of (mostly) women around the world who knit for all these reasons and more. The Joy of Knitting brought this all home to me and rekindled my interest in this wonderful form of self-expression. Get a copy for yourself (and your child?) and see how easy and pleasurable knitting can be. Give a copy to someone you love. Who knows: your thanks just might be a hand-knitted Mobius scarf!

    Book Description

"An attractive volume that simplifies and demystifies textile design."--Booklist. Crafters who work with fabric-quilters, embroiderers, cross-stitchers, sewers, weavers, and knitters-eventually wish they could create their own unique designs, rather than following someone else's patterns. Here's the best basic book on the market to show them how. With appealing color illustrations, the authors show how the most complex designs are built on a few shapes (like squares, circles, and triangles). They also show novice designers where to look for inspiration (like nature and other artists).
For the wannabe fabric designer, for anyone crafting with fabric, this book is a joy and a revelation.

oAppeals to a broad craft market, from knitters to sewers

oAimed at crafters of all skill levels

oHelp with designing, the area in which crafters feel the most need for guidance

"...the inspiration that The Fabric Design Book provides for the collaboration of hand, eye, and imagination makes it an excellent addition to anyone's library."--At Large, Embroiderers' Guild of America.

        Book Description

A unique, visually inspiring, all-color survey of knitted textile designs and patterns.

Françoise Tellier-Loumagne has taught textile and knit design in France for more than thirty years. Drawing on her experience as teacher and practitioner, she has assembled a creative and inventive overview of stitches and fabrics, both hand-knitted and machine-made, presenting hundreds of sumptuous ways of working with yarn, from silk thread to Shetland wool. Other books propose patterns to copy; this book uses basic patterns as points of departure, opening up endless possibilities for sophisticated knitting designs.

The book is organized by fabric types: simple knits, jacquards, fine jersey knits, interlock, open-work, and many others. It covers hand knitting, domestic machine knitting, and industrial knitting, explaining the relevant techniques and notation for each.

The author encourages the reader to be innovative and to experiment with the various techniques, drawing inspiration from the natural world and one's personal surroundings: pebbles on the sand, autumn leaves, snow sparkling in the sun, weeds and grasses bending in the wind. Every type of stitch that she describes is accompanied by enlarged photos of the textiles, detailed diagrams, and written instructions. The yarns used here are highly textural and attractive, which further encourages experimentation with yarn combinations and knitting techniques.

The book will appeal to domestic knitters, professional knit designers, textile designers, and students, and will be a source of inspiration to anyone working with or interested in knitted textiles. Over 600 color illustrations and hundreds of diagrams.

4 out of 5 stars Inspired and Inspiring book.......2007-01-06

This beautiful book will launch you on flights of knitting fancy. Lush photography combines knitted pieces with the nature that inspired them. But this is not a pattern book, or a how-to volume. Grab a cup of tea and find a comfortable spot to while away a stolen hour or so with this book on those occasions when you want to keep your mind busy, not your hands. True, if you're a hand-knitter only, you won't be able to duplicate all of the stitches you see here, but that's not really the point. It's more about opening your mind to the possibilities that open up with needles and yarn.

5 out of 5 stars An in-depth exploration of knit textures........2006-05-07

This extraordinary book could keep you inspired and busy for a long time. Each page offers an array of sophisticated techniques doable either by hand or on a knitting machine. A perennial reference book and a must have for designers. Warning: not for beginners, who will get utterly lost.

        5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2006-03-22

I loved how she connects natural objects with knitting--makes a great connection to how you can gain inspiration around you and translate it into knitting. I'm a machine knitter and this is one of the few books that properly addresses the techniques of machine knitting. For handknitters, this might be a bit disappointing if you are looking for techniques. A few times the author even says, "can't be done with hand knitting"--so be forewarned. If you don't need technique or have other books on technique this will be a great asset. I love to sit around and just look at the beautiful pictures--very inspiring.

3 out of 5 stars Inspirational - but mainly for commercial machine knitters.......2005-10-29

I purchased this book because I'm always looking for edgy ideas to develop my handknitted accessories. The photography is fabulous: melding natural elements with the fabric helps you to see possibilities.
However, the book seems to be intended for students of commercial design studios. Most of the text describes effects that can be produced using commercial (industrial?) knitting machines for knitted fabrics, including the needle setting to be used.
Some of the ideas are translatable to hand knitting, and there is a nod to this in some pages describing basic hand knit techniques.
The tone of the book is scholarly and seems at odds with the ideas and illustrations.
Overall, if you are studying commercial knitted fabric design, this is a great resource. It's of limited use for hand knit designers.

5 out of 5 stars Even the most experienced knitter will find plenty of new concepts to learn.......2005-10-07

An unusual organization by fabric types, from knits to openwork and ribbed fabric, offers the first clue that The Art Of Knitting: Inspirational Stitches, Textures And Surfaces is not your average knitter's project handbook. Another clue: over 600 color illustrations along with hundreds of diagrams to gather representative samples of hundreds of ways of working with different types of wools. Patterns serve as the point here, encouraging knitters to move beyond to experiment with techniques based on the nature of the fabric. Stitches are matched to textile properties and different yarns encourage unique yarn combinations and knitting techniques. Even the most experienced knitter will find plenty of new concepts to learn in The Art Of Knitting.

"Confidence with pattern can be gained with experience," says the introduction to this gorgeous book, "but as very few people have the time these days to try out endless different combinations, I have tried here to gather together a host of decoration ideas based around the five main categories of pattern found in the home." Professional decorators seem able to combine patterns effortlessly, but for the rest of us it can be fairly intimidating. How do you choose from among a riot of color and design and not have your home end up looking like it was decorated by some demented thrift shop owner? Stylist Katrin Cargill tells us precisely how we can do it, in information-packed text and hundreds of great photos. Each of the book's five sections is devoted to one of her five pattern categories--texture, stripes, checks, motifs, and pictorial. We can easily put what we've learned into practice by trying out some of the 10 carefully explained step-by-step projects, including painting stripes or checks on walls, making bordered curtains, stenciling a floor, and covering a wall with fabric. --Amy Handy

        4 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures.......2005-06-23

The photos in the book are absolutely stunning! This book was released a few years ago but you couldn't tell...it looks like it was done this year.
There are mainly europien castles, cottages, etc. featured and only a couple of modern homes. But I agree with the previous reviewers on that this book is truly inspirational and has great examples of combining patterns, textures, etc. together in an anusual way. The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 star is because the text could have been more informative, I felt that in some cases, the author was just stating the obvious. I find the text only somewhat helpful. Otherwise it's a very well done book! I also use it as a coffe table book and draw ideas, inspiration from it.

4 out of 5 stars A pattern for inpspiring home decor.......2001-12-13

This is a gorgeous book filled with lots of inspiring ideas for your home and some projects that emulate the look of designs in the book. I keep this on my coffee table and flip through it when I need some advice about combining different patterns and textures. There are some schemes here I would never have imagined working together, but seeing them on the pages of this beautiful book gives me the courage to be bolder with color and pattern.

5 out of 5 stars A Passion For This Book!.......1999-12-03

I am an interior design professional and we have a copy of this book in our office. It is full of fun, vibrant, whimsical and creative ideas. It is another wonderful book from Katrin Cargil.

When choosing fabric for home furnishings, most people play it safe and decide on subtle patterns or plain colors, leaving a room looking rather bland. The Pattern Book urges us to be braver and bolder in our choice of fabrics and patterns by helping us practice the art of mixing and matching patterns and colors. The book explains the theories behind successful pattern mixing and, most importantly, provides pattern swatches so that readers can begin putting the theories into practice.

The bulk of the book is the 120 fabric swatches contained inside. They're grouped by pattern type, based on the most natural and likely combination of patterns: large-scale and floral fabrics, stripes, and textured or small patterns. The swatch groups lie side by side for easy matching. Readers can flip through the swatches to choose the colors, textures, and patterns that appeal to them and that coordinate with the other fabrics they've chosen. All of the fabrics shown in the book can be purchased using the contact details on the back of each swatch but, as the book points out, the object is to make homeowners feel confident enough to be able to match any fabric patterns, not just the ones in the book.

The book provides tips on using the various patterns to best effect. For instance, textured patterns are a safe bet for the "pattern timid" because they add only a slight, raised pattern without overwhelming with color. Homeowners with a small room would do better to use large-scale patterns, rather than small patterns, to make the room seem cozier. The book also lays down a set of ground rules that will provide nervous beginners with some helpful guidelines. By using The Pattern Book, homeowners should begin to feel comfortable, even excited, about combining patterns in their home. --Kris Law

3 out of 5 stars good for getting a feel for different pattern combinations.......2000-03-04

I was really excited when I ordered the book, because I thought the idea of showing how different patterns looked with each other was a great idea. However the text was very confusing, and still didn't give me a clue on how to mix and match fabrics. The author divided all patterns into 3 categories which I felt were too broad and rather vague, and the samples shown in the book aren't to scale. How can you really mix and match fabrics without proper scale? The book that I really like is "Fabrique Technique," as it gives you all the elements, such as scale, contrast, texture, etc. to use with each fabric selected. It also gives a "formula" for using multiple fabrics in a room, with worksheets and stickers. .

2 out of 5 stars I wanted to like this book...but did not.......2006-08-11

I bought this book to solve a problem I have a fairly large backstock of a novelty yarn and when the purchasing haze cleared, I wasn't sure what I'd do with it. I was hoping this book would give me ideas....especially on work-a-bility of patterns with challenging yarn. That is perhaps not a fair test, I admit.

This book is loaded with designs for fizzy, hairy yarns. As a result, everything looks very dated. I found almost nothing that would work with "my" novelty yarn, a slubby Gedifra number. I would wear almost nothing I see in this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great source for yarn descriptions.......2006-03-07

I was looking for a primer on yarns. The first part of this book catagorizes yarns and describes the characteristics very well. I highly recommend the book if you are interested in yarn characteristics. The section of patterns was fun to glance through, but I don't intend to make any of them.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2003-10-18

I found this book very inspirational. The beautiful color images of the knitted pieces made from unique combinations of novelty yarns offered many ideas for my own work. Seeing both Militzer's version and Klein's version of the same pattern provokes very different design concepts as well as color use. Excellent resource, I find I go back to it regularly for inspiration.

          2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-09-04

I was totally prepared to love this book, but when I read it, I found it to be quite disappointing. Whilst it has two or three helpful tips for knitting with novelty yarn and a gazillion gorgeous closeups of totally luscious yarns, it doesn't begin to go anywhere near the "Exploration of Color, Texture, and Style" promised in the title. In fact, aside from a few swatches knit with novelty yarns, it doesn't explore anything at all.

Much of the information in the book has to do with correcting faults in sweaters, information that is presented more thoroughly in many other books. I was expecting something of the quality of Sally Melville's Styles (an excellent book that delves into the many uses for oddments).

This book just doesn't fulfill it's promise of being a creative exploration. It's just a pattern book with a tip or two on fit, nothing more. And quite honestly, the designs are mostly dated (unless you're on a 1980's retro kick), and some are downright ugly.

I tried to like it, but it just didn't offer me anything.

          5 out of 5 stars What a Great Book!.......2001-08-16

This is a wonderful and creative book. One can almost feel the yarns texture from the lovely photos. This is one of those books that inspires even if you don't think there's another sweater in you. I can't wait to open up my stash and get going on one of these beauties.
