5 out of 5 stars Just as great as the rest.......2007-07-03

I am a HUGE fan of Garth Nix's works. The books, expecially in this series, capture my attention every time to where I feel like I can't put them down until I read the very last punctuation mark. Lady Friday followed along with the other books, and I cannot wait for the next two to finish out the series!

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Read!.......2007-06-17

This was yet another great book in this series. I was so disappointed when I got finish with it in less than 12 hours. I cannot believe I have to wait another year for Superior Saturday and then another for Lord Sunday!

5 out of 5 stars A top pick for prior fans........2007-06-10

Garth Nix's latest ' The Keys to the Kingdom' addition is LADY FRIDAY, telling of Arthur Penhaligon, whose friends have been captured by the Pipe in a world where the army controls most of the Great Maze. Pitted against the ruthless Lady Friday, Arthur finds himself in a race to win control of the House and assume his role as a rightful heir - or lose everything - in this fifth book of the series, recommended as a top pick for prior fans.

5 out of 5 stars An already exciting and at times scary adventure.......2007-06-01

On the fifth day, there was fear...

Leaf wakes up in a hospital ward and realizes something strange is going on. There are several people with her, but they all appear to be sound asleep, and there are no medical items. Leaf remembers that Lady Friday was a nurse at the tent hospital, but it's not until a frightened hospital cleaner tries to save Leaf from being detected that Leaf becomes aware of the danger that she --- along with her Aunt Mango and several other sleepers --- is in.

Meanwhile, Arthur wakes up from a nightmare in the Citadel. The last battle has left him shaken, but he appears to have defeated the Piper for now. Unfortunately, the New Nithling army has control of the Great Maze, while Superior Saturday causes trouble by cutting off the telephone lines and controlling the elevators of the House. To make matters worse, the Dame Primus, since gaining the Fourth Part of the Will, has unwonted, barely-concealed moments of rage. Arthur isn't sure he can trust her, but he has no choice. He is trying to figure out what happened to his family in the week that has passed on Earth, as well as locate his friends who have been captured --- or worse --- by the Piper.

Then, a messenger from Lady Friday arrives bearing a letter and a gift. Lady Friday has apparently abdicated her position and will turn it over to whoever can find the Fifth Part of the Will and the Fifth Key. For Arthur, this means he has to go against the Piper and Superior Saturday and possibly gain control over them. However, the week hasn't been going well for Arthur, and it gets worse when he is unexpectedly transferred to somewhere within the House, with no known way of getting back to the Great Maze or to the Secondary Realms.

While Arthur tries to make his way to Lady Friday's Scriptorium, he encounters some familiar enemies and meets a few new characters, including the Paper Pushers, who have an unusual but interesting line of work. Arthur has more work cut out for him, but when Leaf discovers Lady Friday's real motive --- "experiencing" --- the day is further seeped in the fear of the unknown.

LADY FRIDAY, the fifth book in Garth Nix's The Keys to the Kingdom series, adds another dimension to an already exciting and at times scary adventure that will have readers looking forward to the weekend.

My 10-year-old loves this series, although for that age, I would recommend it for advanced readers. Also, start with book one in the series. The storyline is creative and complex and would be difficult to follow for anyone coming in mid-series.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Read of A Guilty Pleasure.......2007-08-08

I just received my copy of Crystal Lake Memories as of yesterday. Since opening up the box that it was packaged in (packaged beautifully by Amazon..Thanks Guys! You're the best!!!!) I was not able to put it down. This is truly a definitive book on one of the most storied franchises in the history of american film making. From the beautiful cover, to the foreward and preface by Sean Cunningham and Peter Bracke, a tapestry woven in beautiful shades of crimson red begins to take shape. I have been a film of classic "horror" films since I was a teen, and yes, Friday the 13th has been and always will be one of the hallmark pictures within the genre that was so much a part of my youth. One should not take these films too seriously, and I have certainly gained a new perspective of these films since reading through the this beautiful book.

One reviewer stated so appropriately that it was a "bloody" shame (sorry guys) that such a book was not available for films such as "Alien" or "Halloween". Although I do reserve hope that such volumes will be written and rendered for devotees of those particular film franchises. They are certainly deserving. In short, my purchase of Crystal Lake Memories is one that I am happy to have made. It is beautifully rendered in every way, shape and form. Beyond the shade of crimson red, lyes a deeper and more sentimental look at everyone involved with this franchise. From the veteran filmmakers, to the effervescent actors and adoring fans, this book documents it all with tremendous detail and devotion. Kudos Mr. Bracke for bringing us such a fun and informative read.

5 out of 5 stars Fan of the Films? BUY THIS BOOK!.......2007-08-07

As a huge "Friday the 13th" fan I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. It's the most indepth look at each of the films, and the TV series out there. Peter Bracke culled together interviews with almost everyone in Hollywood who was associated with one of the films. There are countless stories by the cast and crew of each film. You are presented the good, the bad and the ugly details of each production. The book is broken into sections by movie title, and almost everyone involved in that particular movie gets to speak about their experience, most do so without pulling any punches. I can't recommend this book highly enough to fans of the series.

Book Description

The Emotional Impact Series...

The truth may be sacred, but many people--both children and adults--think lying is easier. Some people lie so often that it becomes a habit--a very bad habit--that reduces their own sense of self-esteem and makes others not trust them. In a clear and easy-to-understand narrative, Dr. Moser discusses the problems of lying and the importance of telling the truth. he offers thoughtful examples and suggests ways that can help children tell the truth. Dr. Moser's text is informative, entertaining, witty, and easy to read. David Melton's illustrations are outstanding. They are bright and clever, and often hilarious. Children are sure to love this book. parents are bound to appreciate its common-sense approach. And teachers and counselors will recognize this book as a valuable tool for affecting the lives of children in positive ways.

5 out of 5 stars Why lying is silly.......2002-01-27

A pediatrician I knew often told parents that all children lie. It may be a learned behavior, but for some reason all kids learn to do it by the time they are two. The hard part is teaching them to unlearn.

This 61-page picture book contains simple language easily read by first and second graders (on a par with Dr. Suess), but its sophistication about children's propensity to lie will keep them coming back until they are approaching middle school.

The premise is simple: While everyone, even the author, has told some lies--"I'm late because my watch stopped, I did not spend my lunch money on candy"--most people need to tell the truth to feel good about themselves. People get along much better in life if they tell the truth.

The book explains that there a lot of different kinds of lies, and a lot of reasons that people tell them. "Some people can look at others, face to face and they can tell an enormous WHOPPER. But when others lie, their faces get red, and they have to turn to look away." People lie because they don't want to tell the truth, don't want to admit that they have done something wrong, prefer to blame others, think it will get them out of trouble. Lying, on the contrary, often gets people into even more trouble.

Some of Moser's books are funny. Not this one. But Moser does make even adults look silly when they lie. A car salesman looks ridiculous telling his customer "This car is in perfect condition." A politician, who promises, if elected, to raise only wages, but never to raise taxes, looks silly too. So does the kid who tells his friends that his uncle was an explorer before becoming an astronaut and a movie star.

Next, kids learn about why it's important not to lie. First, liars need good memories, so they can remember who they lied to and what they told them. Otherwise, they'll get confused and will soon be caught in their lies. Worrying about this makes some liars unable to eat or sleep. It even makes them worry that people will stop believing or lose respect for them. If people want respect and trust from others, Moser tells kids, "you must apologize for lying and tell the truth."

Telling the truth, he concludes, is "like ice skating--the more you do it, the easier it becomes." Once kids have digested this message, they tell the truth more often, and have every reason to feel proud. Alyssa A. Lappen

5 out of 5 stars I reviewed this book and thought it was great........1999-07-17

Recently, I reviewed Don't Tell a Whopper on Fridays!, and Iwas impressed with Dr. Moser's hepful words and colorful, attention-catching illustrations. I had tried to keep copies of his earlier Emotional Impact Series books in my office waiting room, but they quickly disappeared. During the brief periods that the books from Dr. Moser's emotional Impact Series stayed in my waiting room, parents and children were always reading them before appiontments. They often wanted to discuss them in detail in my office. The popularity of Dr. Moser's books among my patients was amazing. I'd kept story books and children's magazines in my waiting room for years. They never disappeared, just Dr. Moser's books did. i no longer have a private practice , but I imagine that Don't Tell a Whopper on Friday! would myster vanish just as fast as Dr. Moser's other books.

4 out of 5 stars Good, easy read.......2007-04-19

This is an easy, engaging read. But, it doesn't cover the last few decades of history, which are really very interesting. Definitely a nice introduction to the Navajo history.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2007-03-17

If you want to really learn about the Navajo culture, history, and issues, this book is probably the best on the market. It is dense with information and well written. Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Is This Really How the Navajos Did Things?.......2006-08-10

I'm sorry folks, but I thought it was boring. I know I fell asleep in the beginning of the afternoon one day while I was reading it. Sure, the facts about the Navajo that the author researched, were researched very well. And I had a sense that the Author was going to let me in on just how much he researched, even if most of what he had to say was very subtle. I can take subtle from an author for just a short time, and then I go and look for a good Romance.

    4 out of 5 stars A much-needed account of an amazing people.......2005-10-01

Historians may argue over the reasons for much of what the Navajo have experienced--over the Long Walk, over the Navajo-Hopi Land Dispute, and over the infamous livestock reduction. They may argue about where the Navajos came from, and what their culture needs to survive and thrive, but no one can argue that they're not a fascinating culture deserving of documentation.
    Because they are.
The Navajo Indians have lived in the area that's now the United States for centuries--probably since shortly after A.D. 1400--and may have migrated here from Asia, via Alaska and northwestern Canada, though there are other valid theories as well.
The word "Navajo" is a Spanish corruption of a Tewa Indian phrase that meant something like "those who farm the canyons," but "Diné" is the Navajos' name for themselves, and translates simply as "the people."
The Navajo Nation is the modern-day Navajo homeland. It was formed in the early-1900s, to better allow the tribe to deal with American oil companies wishing to lease Navajo land, and is America's biggest Indian reservation, literally a country within a country. The Navajo Nation has its own Bill of Rights, its own flag, a President, its own police force, freedoms and laws unique to the Navajo tribe, and levels of government known as agencies and chapters. Today it's home to about 300,000 Navajo individuals, and covers 25,000 square miles of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado--a reservation larger than the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire combined.
The Navajos are a major American culture, and they deserve books that are as well-researched and as fascinating to read as this one. It's a priceless research tool, and aside from the sad episodes it documents, it's a pleasure to read.

5 out of 5 stars Historically Accurate and Dynamic.......2002-06-06

This book is very dynamic in its broad spectrum of education. For the student of the Navajo culture or th historian wanting to know the insides and motivation of the Native Americans known as Navajos, this book is the best.

Detailed, historical and filled with details on the "white mans" conquest. Their habits, traditions, dreams, beliefs, goals, society and place in the history of the New Americas.

A must read for anyone wanting to learn about a society that has been opposed, oppressed and often forgotten. They are a brilliant culture.

Get this book. Read it well. (I read it three times!)

5 out of 5 stars one of heyer's most amusing.......2006-01-14

A very original and endearing story.Amusing throughout, and with the selfish hero finally getting his hilarious (and touching) comeuppance at the most original ending. Great secondary characters help to make this one of Miss Heyer's best Regency books.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful Read .......2005-04-01

You will never be disappointed with a Georgette Heyer novel. The conversations between her characters are brilliant. You discover almost everything by how they address each other! She also has the most uniquely named people in her books.

The way both characters in this book mature and evolve is wonderful. Sherry (Lord Sherington) calls Hero (his wife) "Kitten" and indeed he treats her like a pampered pet. But trouble brews for these newlyweds with gambling and other mischief afoot. Both main characters have a long way to go before becoming proper! The journey will keep you interested beginning to end with all the other characters just as interesting and amusing.

    Superb romance with substance.

2 out of 5 stars Audio Recording review.......2004-10-13

I loved this BOOK and would give it 5 stars.

The audio book, though, is very disappointing. The reader uses voices for the characters that are silly. The voice she uses for Hero Wantage, the woman protagonist, is high and squeaky, and the voice she uses for the male protagonist, Lord Sherringham, is loud and affected. Also, the narration bits are rather low volume, where the conversational bits are very loud. It's hard to get the volume set right to get both parts without getting a headache.

Too bad the Audio Edition is so poor, since it's a wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2004-09-07

I'm not usually a big fan of Heyer regencies that feature younger heroines, but I have to say that this book was an excellent read.

After receiving a vehement refusal to his proposal of marriage from the Incomparable Beauty, Isabella, Lord Sheringham (a.k.a. Sherry) decides to marry the first woman that he meets. Added to the set-down dealt to his pride is the fact that he can't get his hands on his inheritance from his greedy, spendthrift uncle until he reaches the age of 25, or until he marries (whichever is sooner). The first woman he sees happens to be Hero Wantage, a young woman who used to tag along after Sherry when she was a little girl. Hero is an orphan living in the home of her aunt and cousins, who treat her abominably. She's nearly 17 years old, and her aunt plans to ship her off to a school for governesses as soon as possible. Sherry decides to solve both their problems by proposing marriage to Hero, an offer she readily accepts from a man she idolizes. What follows is a humorous tale about Hero learning the ins and outs of high society, and a sweet romance about the couple finding love with each other.

Hero, also dubbed Kitten by Sherry, is a heroine that is innocent and sweet. She loves Sherry unconditionally and finds no fault in him, often following advice literally, which makes for a very amusing story. She has enough spirit so she's not meek, yet enough restraint that she's not too outrageous or grating. I found her to be a very likable character, unlike the immature vacuity of Leonie from "These Old Shades."

Sherry, likewise, was also very likable. He's a serious, yet good-humored gentleman. In terms of Heyer's other books, he reminds me of Freddy from "Cotillion," who was sober yet possessed an unconcerned, almost "spacy" air. Sherry's friends, Ferdy and Gil, also put me in mind of "Cotillion;" they end up being dragged into the couple's hilarious misunderstandings and schemes.

I heartily recommend "Friday's Child" to anyone that enjoys a Regency romance with a good dose of comedy. If you enjoyed "Cotillion," you'll love this! I prefer Heyer's older heroines, but Hero possesses enough common sense and decorum so she's not flighty or a complete hoyden, and enough sweetness and grace to be absolutely adorable.

5 out of 5 stars gentle and fun favourite.......2004-03-10

I read my first "regency romance" from Ms. Heyer at the age of 13, and a few decades later still go back to my favourites. This story is definately one of them.

For anyone who isn't already a fan of Georgette Heyer's largest group of books, this wonderful lady, writing in early and mid 20th-century England, produced a glorious collection of romances set in Regency England,(while all the time despising these best-selling books that took her away from the straight historical books she really wanted to write, but wrote more slowly.) (Oh yes, she also wrote some pretty good murder mysteries too, but this isn't one of them.)
Her many fans are really pleased she did have these economic needs, because we find her romantic novels enjoyable again and again, and don't care about a few (paltry) flaws.
Georgette Heyer's romances stand out from all others, to me anyway, because of the great sense of humour and wit that makes all of the books great fun, the easy to read style that never becomes banal, and plots which, although always happy-ending and sometimes rather similar, are never, ever, boring. If you like romances that are well-written, without taking themselves too seriously, and you're happy to know the right guy will always get the (sometimes wrong, but always feisty, and never insipid) heroine, try her books. You'll likely get hooked, and then be delighted to find there's plenty more (though not always in print).

I probably call this book 'gentle' because the hero isn't apparently hateful, or offensive or caustic, just very likeable and somewhat thoughtless. There is one truly bad guy, whose inner wickedness is revealed gradually, and that anyone familiar with Heyer's books will pleasantly anticipate eventually getting his due, and there's an unpleasant (and very silly) mother-in-law, but this book has much less black/white stereotyping than some of Ms.Heyer's other books.

What keeps me enjoying "Friday's Child" again and again is the broad range of characters included in the tale. With the hero's three friends, all very clearly different, playing their own parts in the twists and turns of the plot and general misunderstandings, plus various relatives contributing their own little cameos, there's plenty of variety in the story. After reading this book I always feel that I've met (or meet again) a nice assortment of different characters, none of them perfect, but most very likeable, with a few wonderfully unlikeable for contrast.

Like all of Georgette Heyer's Regency stories you get a great (and well-researched) trip back into Society life during the Regency period, but this typically-Heyer gem gives you more. There's the wonderful range of characters you are shown, plus more enjoyment of the of the secondary personalities . In this picture of Regency England you learn more than the all-important niceties of "good ton" and "NOT good ton", you are introduced to some varied aspects of society. The nobility you meet include the honest and the phony, the noble-but-nasty and the basically-decent, the thoughtful and impulsive, sensible and silly, and you also glimpse characters from the rest of society, living in a version of England that's very different from that of the main protagonists.

All in all, this is another glorious read from the much loved Georgette Heyer. If you've read her other books, be prepared for some delightful hours, and if this is a more mellow read than some, with a bit less life-and-death drama, the pleasure is no less, with lots of fun and variety, and if you roughly guess the ending (pure Heyer) there's a load of very believable ups-and-downs before you get there. If you are new to this author, (and you don't despise happy endings), you're in for much fun.

    Book Description

Since its premiere in 1936, Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf has become a classic beloved by generations of children and adults. For this enchanting new version of the story, Bono and his childhood friend Gavin Friday have collaborated on a stunning boxed set that includes a clothbound book and enhanced CD. The beautifully produced hardback book contains 64 pages of Bono's original paintings-with help from his daughters Jordan and Eve-to illustrate the story. And the enhanced CD features a fresh and funny rendition of the musical score, narrated in a sly and hilarious reading by Gavin Friday and performed by the Seezer Ensemble. Royalties from the project will benefit the Irish Hospice Foundation.

"Beware... for wolves come in many disquises."

Peter lives with his grandfather in a cottage surrounded by a high stone wall near a deep, dark forest. In the story we meet a number of animals. The story is read by Irish musician, Gavin Friday, who has a very enjoyable sensuous voice.

To make this book kid friendly (from my teacherish perspective), I'd recommend glueing the first cat picture page shut. You could buy one for the kids and one as a collector item - so if you object, the problem can be easily remedied. I just think it is a little too suggestive for younger children (unless they are used to art museums, then they won't blink an eye), although adults will easily see the double meaning of the book's contents that seems to deal with temptation and being swallowed up by darkness. The other pictures seem fine.

The duck with the bill that extends out like a cross seems to be in contrast with the first bird that looks more like a dove. I took it to mean you should live your beliefs instead of just making them a show. Pretty clever to show that in an illustration so subtely. The dove and the cat also contrast sharply and the meaning is very clear.

Bono's illustrations are beautiful and he drew the pictures with the help of his children. I purchased this for a collector friend and couldn't help myself, I read it first and listened to the CD. For some reason, I thought Bono would be reading the story.

My dad heard me listening to this in the office and thought it would be fun to listen to on Halloween. There are fun elements of suspense throughout the music and now and then it gets a "little" scarry.

For adults who heard the music as children, the combination of the music and the story makes the story much more meaningful.

5 out of 5 stars Peter and the wolf.......2005-09-20

This CD and book set is absolutely wonderful. Maurice Seezer and Gavin Friday have done a fantastic job of the musical arrangements and Gavin's voice is perfect. The illustrations by Bono and his two girls are perfect, it just shows how talented they all are. I have purchased this as a gift that my 18 month old daughter will hopefully have forever and I will make sure that I also get a copy for my soon-to-be-born son.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!.......2004-02-25

When I was a little girl I loved to listen to the story of Peter and the Wolf. As an adult, I have grown to love celtic music and traditional Irish instruments. So when this set came out I was eager to purchase it -- and I was thrilled with what I got.

The music is beautifully performed by the Friday-Seezer ensemble. Each instrument comes alive as the animal it is supposed to represent. While the music is definitely Prokofiev (no doubt about that) it has an Irish flavor that is just enchanting.

Although I wasn't too keen on the pictures when I viewed them on a website, I thought they worked wonderfully in this book accompanied by the music.

And last, but not least, Gavin Friday cannot get enough credit for his wonderful narration of the story.

All in all, the story is whimsical and fun, just like I remembered it to be. I agree with the other reviewer that it would be nice if the book were larger, but aside from that I have nothing but praise for this set.

4 out of 5 stars Help children develop multi-focal literacy.......2004-01-10

Buy this book! As a librarian, and mother of three, I highly reccomend this book and CD for both children and adults. This initiative by the Irish Hospice Foundation joins the considerable musical talents of Gavin Friday and Maurice Seezer with spirited illustrations by Bono to create a richly rewarding sensory experience.
The narration and orchestration are novel and pure listening pleasure for children and adults. The practice of enriching text with thoughtful art and quality music has the well-documented effect of promoting literacy and improving cognitive skills in children. This project does that, and does it extremely well.
My only complaint with the book is that the size is too small to share easily with large groups of children.

5 out of 5 stars Great for all ages.......2004-01-09

Being a Gavin Friday fan (so much so that we named our son Gavin) I had to get this boxed set when it came out and I was not dissapointed. The illustrations were wonderful, Gavin's reading of the story (and the music) was simply amazing.

Perhaps the more American puritanical parents will have issues with bare breasts illustrated, however most of the world would find nothing objectionable to even younger than the "recommended" age. I found it simply refreshing that illustrations in a children's geared book are not devoid of body parts which everyone has and what most (thankfully) associate with feeding children and not sex.

A box set well worth purchasing.

This was a great book for readers in the grades 6-8. I read it for a summer packet report and i really hate to read. This book is one of my fav. books because it has some drama and stuff like that! It left you on the edge at some points of the book and the end was like a cliff hanger. But it was a great book and it all came to a great finish like all of her other books. If you want a good book that doesnt take long to read and is easy to read choose dog friday

You don't have to weather these storms alone. God promises to be with you, and He has provided you with three anchor points to help you ride out any storm. Each anchor point was planted firmly in bedrock two thousand years ago by a carpenter who claimed to be the Christ. And it was all done in the course of a single day. All done during six hours one Friday.

Those six hours were no normal six hours. They were the most critical hours in history. For during those six hours on that Friday, God made it possible for you to know that:

With most books, you read them, they challenge you or entertain you. You finish the book, put it your book case or donate it to a library.

Not with "Six Hours One Friday".

I purchased this book when it was initially published and read it with more eagerness, more reverence with every turn of a page.

Since then, I have re-read it many, many times. It is a part of my permanent library.

The highlight of my spiritual year is Easter. In humble preparation, every Good Friday I take my "Six Hours One Friday" and go to a place of solitude in a park with a picnic lunch, and for 3 hours (noon to 3PM) read once again what Jesus did for me!

There are no words to describe this intense spiritual event.

Always 'new', always personally meaningful, always incredibly humbling.

You'll read "Six Hours One Friday" again and again
