When it comes to providing architects with quick, accurate guidance for a complete range of on-the-job issues, no book matches The Architect's Portable Handbook from McGraw-Hill.
Customer Reviews:
Nice small reference.......2007-07-18
This is a nice little reference book that is packed with useful info. It's not the definitive Architectural reference but that's not it's intent. It is a bit pricey...but pick up a used copy for $10 bucks and you'll be pleasently surprised.
Stick to the basics.......2007-05-14
After using the older version of this book, I was disappointed by the sequel. Not only was the shipper terrible, the book showed up sliced and with no return instructions, but the content was already outdated. It has been a disappointment.
Dont like book.......2004-05-18
book is very basic. for the home owner (or joke architect) to become familiar with the basic concepts of building. not for a contractor or engineer.
if you need something small.......2004-04-15
As a portable handbook and quick reference it contains some useful information if you need something to carry in your pocket, beyond that I feel if you have a graphics standards or building construction illustrated you are better off. The cost estimation is a bit simplistic but useful, but does not offset the lack of information. Plenty of areas are covered with only the most generalized and basic information. Reason for two stars: should be a 10 dollar notebook.
Guthrie continues to improve the perfect reference book.......2003-04-14
I have had the First Edition of this book since 1993, and have used that as a reference almost daily throughout my education and well into my professional practice. I decided to purchase this revised edition since the original book was becoming worn and flat out-of-date. This new version (a good 200 pages heavier than the first edition) includes new building code information (specifically IBC 2000), and provides revised cost estimate numbers. To this day, it is still the ONLY book worthy enough to reside on my desk.
This book is an excellent source for the student and professional alike. Basic concepts, construction methods, and principles for design considerations are organized and indexed for easy reference and all attempts have been made to make the content easy to understand. Rules-of-thumb and graphics are provided throughout the text as well as commonly used tables, charts, graphs, maps, etc. Guthrie has also managed to develop several clever little checklists, which assist in making sure all issues have been addressed.
The book is getting a little thick, and the distinctive oversized laminated cover has evolved into a standard size cover (it's not spiral bound - it's a paperback). The price is a little high, but I think the information found in this tidy little book is well worth it.

Book Description
Pat Guthrie, author of The Architect's Portable Handbook, now turns his attention to interior design. Like its predecessor, the book is organized in CSI MasterFormat, modified for the interior design profession. It covers initial planning and estimating through design and construction/installation. Included are materials and specifications checklists, quick references to applicable codes and standards, design data, and typical details. Examples show applications of techniques and procedures. This invaluable reference, like all titles in the Portable Handbook series, provides "the 20% of information needed 80% of the time."

Has great information, but print and graphics are extremely difficult to read.
excellent resource!.......2000-09-21
This book is an excellent resource for my entire class of graduate students. It has a wealth of information, and is easy to take along to sites, classes, etc. There are even pages for you to take notes on. It is organized well and easy to follow. You won't find everything you ever needed to know (and didn't need to know), but you will find essential and most-used codes guidelines and dimensions for interior space.

Book Description
The allure of mobile, portable architecture is worldwide and centuries old, from the desert tents of the bedouin to the silvery capsules of the Airstream trailer. Mobile explores the ever-growing range of possibilities of portable, demountable, and mobile structures. Jennifer Siegal brings together the work of the most interesting contemporary designers of dynamic, active structures, whose work ranges from the microenvironment of a house that literally attaches to your body to the city-scaled macroenvironment of London's Millennium Dome, from the interior of a Boeing jet to an entire mobile community whose living units plug into a framework of flexible communal space, and from the practical design of transportable office space to the whimsical design of Pink Floyd's The Wall stage set. All of the designs celebrate the lightness, transience, and practicality that mobile architecture makes possible. Mobile includes work by Office of Mobile Design, LOT/EK, Vito Acconci, Doug Jackson/LARGE, Mark Fisher, Michael Fox, FTL Happold, Festo, and Lawrence Scarpa. In beautiful color images, detailed drawings, and thoughtful text, the contributors reveal their working methods.

Greg Blanchard, a professional logger, says of Dave Johnson's book, "I enjoyed the book immensely and was constantly amazed to hear someone else describe a predicament which I all too often find myself in. The information is accurate, realistic, and practical."
Chain saws can do in a weekend what used to take a wood cutter an entire summer, but at the same time, used improperly or carelessly, they are certainly one of the most dangerous of power tools and can cause serious injury and even death.
Johnson provides a thorough and very readable overall look at choosing a saw, chain brakes, spare parts, felling, managing your woodlot, hard hats, safety equipment and guidelines, advice on sharpening and maintenance, cutting and selling firewood, and the pros and cons of portable sawmills in what is the most comprehensive overview of wood cutting written in recent years. Not a dry, technical manual, Johnson's accessible writing style is similar to Gene Logsdon's in his well-known The Contrary Farmer. The author's expertise on the subject is reinforced by the book's selection for special distribution by Bailey's, the nation's leading mail-order supplier of gear for loggers and foresters. --Mark A. Hetts

Customer Reviews:
Hardly A Guide.......2002-07-13
The author has an easy readable, style that found me reading the book in one evening. It is laced with humorous anecdotes, but that is where the "goodness" stops. The information on saw and tree safety is a gloss over at best and very disturbing considering the immense danger involved in proper cutting, nevermind improper. A chainsaw manual from a reputable dealer has more safety and technique information than this book. Novices beware, this book will not teach you how to be a "good" woodcutter. The pages on selecting clothing at the Salvation Army and driving around in a beater of a truck would have been better used discussing wood cutting, but it obvious that his self-taught methods and his "it's not the right way, but the way I do it" attitude will get some unlucky beginner killed. Don't buy this book if you are looking for info on Chainsaw milling, he knows nothing about it.
A better title might have been "Subsistence Living with Pulp and Cordwood."
The Good _Logger's_ Guide.......2001-07-11
The title is misleading. While they mention sawmills in the title, there is precious little information on milling, 11 out of 212 pages. If you are looking for info on wood and drying it, try Hoadley's "Understanding Wood", and "Fine Woodworking On: Wood and How to Dry it".
A sad book........2000-04-30
This book might be of interest for experienced woodcutters but is useless for an inexperienced person who wants to learn about chainsaws. The author does not define any of the dozens of technical terms he uses.
As a retired professor of mathematics I am full of sympathy for people who have great difficulties with elementary notions of arithmetic and geometry. Dave Johnson is obviously one of those. One example among many : "Cubic inch displacement is the volume swept by the piston in a single full stroke. Basically, it is the diameter of the piston time the length of the stroke" (page 35). A good book editor should have protected the author from flaunting his shortcomings.
The Good Woodcutters Guide.......2000-01-09
Dave Johnson is a practical guy, who writes a practical guide. He provides a very good review of chainsaw use, safety, and maintenance. He also does a pretty good job of discussing bucking, felling, and all other aspects of getting pine trees off your lot for money.
The other areas discussed, such as sawmills, and economics were interesting, but only cursory. If you are already proficient with a chainsaw, but want to know more about woodlot management, this is not your book.
My only two minor criticisms of the book are Johnson should use diagrams more when he is describing the techniques of felling, bucking etc. Also, It was evident that the author was biased to recommend products sold by his publisher. In particular, his acclaim of a sawmill that the publisher sells, even though he admits that he never used one.
If you are looking for a good book on using your chainsaw to get wood on the ground, this is the book for you.
Dubious Authenticity.......1999-12-20
Although the "Good woodcutter's guide" reads well and is loaded with information from techniques to equipment, it does suffer from some shortcomings, most notably a lack of clarity in the description of potentially lethal activities and materials. For example, the discussion of chain saw "kickback" in which he disagrees with conventional wisdom is interesting, but if the novice is to follow advice that runs counter to other expert opinion, he'd better be supremely confident in the author's ability. I have found reason to question the reliability of some of the claims the author makes. An outstanding example is his advocation of a tree felling practice he calls the "open face" method in which the central concept is the cutting of a "notch of 90 degrees" in the trunk. The photographs and drawings shown decidedly contradict this since they appear to be 45 degree notches (Pgs. 91 and 109). It is actually mathematically impossible to cut a 90 degree notch in a trunk unless the bottom cut slopes upward to some degree, yet Mr. Johnson specifically states that the bottom cut must be a HORIZONTAL cut. Has he ever dropped a tree using his own method? I'd like to know how. If I'm going to engage in risky task like falling trees, I want to know that the person's advice I'm following can be counted on to be the safest available. I hate to be picky, but when the clock strikes thirteen, it's time to throw away the clock. On the other hand, if I've missed something, I'd appreciate an explanation and offer my apology.

Book Description
As reviewed by Kirkus Discoveries: "Step-by-step instructions on how to build a home in an economical and artistically unique way. Owning a home doesn't have to be a trying ordeal, says Madison, who reports that he built his own house with little more than his own muscle power and ingenuity. Though he claims not to be particularly handy, he managed to create a fully functional cabin complete with electricity, running water and Internet access as part of a journey that was both fulfilling and therapeutic. He takes readers through the process, from cutting down trees and laying the foundation for the floor to installing piping and electricity to detailing plans to build additional modules. Pictures and diagrams complement the text, and the author even discusses his future plans to fully automate the cabin. In addition to the down-and-dirty details, he uses quotes from a number of philosophers-Aristotle, Locke, Rousseau and others-to help explain his motivation. It was as much about testing his own abilities as it was about creating a physical shelter. One one level, this is a practical guide that contains pertinent information for people who actually want to build their own cabin. On another, it's a fascinating look inside the mind of a man who chose to go against the grain and who writes with such folksy charm and comical practicality that you can't help but applaud him for bucking the system. Those not interested in building their own homes will be bored senseless by the technical details and some of the long-winded endnotes, but entertaining anecdotes-such as how the author munches on blackberries while simultaneously trimming his beard in his yard to lay down a barrier of human scent that deters snakes-keep the pages turning. In definite need of editorial direction but makes a case for the author-whatever his name is-getting his own home-improvement show." As reviewed by New York Times best selling author Ellen Tanner Marsh: "When Henry David Thoreau tired of the city in 1845, he retreated to the country, living on the shores of Walden Pond and chronicling his experiences in the timeless work Walden or Life in the Woods. Now, in an enchanting new book, A Small Cabin that One Person can Build, readers are presented with a sort of modern-day version of Thoreau's classic. Like Thoreau, author Aristotle Locke Rousseau Hume Madison (a.k.a. Al Madison) decided to retreat from his hectic life, and although he didn't have a place to live, he had some time and money and, more importantly, some land and trees. In this amazing little book, Madison (each of the illustrations names he uses provides a famous quote at the end of it) sets out to build a log cabin-and educate readers on how to do it themselves. In a friendly, approachable style, Madison shows readers exactly how he built his cabin using easy to follow step-by-step instructions, from insulation to wiring to putting on a porch. He lists exactly what tools you need and where to get them. Lest the thought of roughing it doesn't appeal to you, be assured that this cabin is no rustic refuge. Madison added all the modern comforts, including Internet service and a flush toilet. 'There are two characteristics to my building,' he writes 'It was built efficiently and it is a deliberate work of art.' Filled with wonderful photographs and a fine, wry wit, Madison's book is not just a how-to, it's a why-to. Because Madison didn't just build a cabin; he rebuilt himself. As he takes the time to point out, his labors made him healthier, stronger, and emotionally tougher, too. Readers can live vicariously through Madison in this wise and funny book, but truthfully, after reading it you'll want to build a cabin of your own. Luckily Madison is here to show you how."

Book Description
From backpacks to luxury yachts, tents to trailer homes, the newest book from the author of Blowup, Where's My Space Age, and Xtreme Houses follows architecture designed to follow mankind.
For most of us, "house" means stability, structure, and permanence. In an age of increasing population and technological gains, today's mobile society has resulted in a demand for portable dwellings. As dynamic and captivating as Sean Topham's earlier works, this eclectic mix of forty innovative projects illustrates how architects, self-builders, and artists are pushing the limits of form and material to answer the new demands for portability.
Surprisingly, many of the movable houses of today echo history's earliest and most rudimentary shelters. Some reveal an unprecedented demand for luxury and comfort while others reflect a desire to lessen man's impact on the earth. Cleverly juxtaposing the old and the new, countless eye-popping photographs of mobile homes, transformable fashions, custom vehicles, and private jets are paired with entertaining texts to explore the new nomadic lifestyle and the evolution of temporary communities. The book shows how our desire for a house that moves can be thrillingly modern, while expressing an essential part of our human nature.

Book Description
Since 1955, when they were first standardized, shipping containers have had a radical effect on our physical reality. Seven million of these steel containers are now moving around the world, and their measurements have defined the design of ships, railroad cars, trucks, and cargo airplanes, as well as the landscape of ports, airports, and trucking yards. And that doesn't even begin to touch on the wider and much more invisible system of distribution, of just-in-time-inventory, of information networks in which the container moves. LOT/EK, the New York-based studio with a reputation for creating architecture and environments using industrial objects, here takes on the standard shipping container as medium. The Mobile DwellingUnit (MDU) is "a shipping container transformed into a dwelling that nevertheless retains the attributes of a shipping container, i.e. it remains shippable." It is a "discreet mobile element" that can be moved around the globe, to anywhere with that can receive standard shipping containers. It's full-service interior includes push-out elements with space for sleeping, storage, eating, bathing, and cooking; these elements can be pushed smoothly back into the container when the occupant moves and needs to ship his or her living space along. Consider the MDU a trailer home for travelling between global villages. LOT/EK: Mobile Dwelling Unit, the book, will not only document the MDU concept but will provide greater understanding of the work's cultural and social context with essays by leading architectural critics, theorists, historians, and practitioners. An interview with the designers by Chris Scoates will illuminate LOT/EK's process in the creation and development of the MDU as well as their unique approach to architecture. Henry Urbach will place the MDU project in the context of LOT/EK's larger body of work. Professor Robert Kronenberg, a leading expert on portable architecture, will consider the project within the history of the genre. Aaron Betsky, a leading design critic and Director of NAi, will explore the meaning of the MDU within a larger contemporary cultural and social context of mobility and habitation. A visual essay by Andrew Blauvelt and LOT/EK will explore the territories of the MDU's inspiration and related themes of nomadic travel and industrial systems of transportation.
Customer Reviews:
MDU.......2007-07-15
While this book was somewhat well written, it lacked detailed photos, and drawings to help explain the MDU and it's uses.
A little disapointed as the book could have explained detailes better.
Useless.......2006-03-04
The book is comprised of the following: many photos of shipping containers in their original, unmodified state; many pages of low-quality computer-aided-design images of shipping containers; some text about the idea of using shipping containers as housing phrased in vague architectural gibberish; and a few photos of a shipping container in the process of modification. The book looks like a souped-up version of an art student's thesis. (It doesn't contain the details or drawings that I assume would be required of an architecture student.) I don't mean that as an insult to art students, but as a way of saying that the contents of the book are conceptual, not practical. Scoates makes the points that shipping containers are abundant, interesting, and can be used for housing. (But it's not "about" environmental or cost solutions, according to LOT-EK.) That's it; nothing in the book is more than a restating of those basic points. If that's what you're seeking, you'll be happy with your purchase. But if you are looking for information, ideas, or inspiration about actually transforming shipping containers into housing, the book is utterly useless. Within five minutes of receiving it, I had it repackaged for return.
