Book Description
Fu-Tung Cheng's surprise bestseller Concrete Countertops paved the way for a fresh look at a familiar surface. His new book moves beyond the kitchen and transforms this commonplace material into an elegant medium that can be used throughout the house. Combining cutting-edge design with helpful how-to information, Concrete at Home offers ingenious ideas for planning and building walls, fireplaces, mantels, hearths, and exterior and interior floors, as well as tips on incorporating architectural elements such as counters, sinks, columns, and water pieces into the project. The construction of forms, footings, and ties is detailed in clear, easy-to-follow instructions, and special attention is given to finishing techniques, including adding color, texture, and inlays.

Imagine the possibilities...........2007-05-03
In CONCRETE AT HOME, concrete designer Fu-Tung Chen does just this, sharing with his readers the many creative uses he's found for concrete over the years. Floors, walls, countertops, sinks, fireplaces - Chen covers them all, with a decided flair for the fanciful.
I approached CONCRETE AT HOME as a first-time homeowner who was toying with the idea of ripping out all of my home's flooring and staining the concrete slab underneath. And, I should specify, hiring a pro to do so, since I'm not the DIY type (at least not when it comes to the single largest investment of my life). It was with this newbie curiosity that I devoured CONCRETE AT HOME.
Though I found CONCRETE AT HOME to be somewhat helpful and very enjoyable, it didn't totally quench my thirst for all that is concrete. Chen can't quite seem to decide on an intended audience in CONCRETE AT HOME; while he aims to explain the basics of concrete to average Janes like myself, he also includes advanced instructions for professionals. As a result, the book has a kind of schizophrenic quality. Although Chen does take the time to explain some of the fundamentals, it's not as complete or in-depth enough to qualify CONCRETE AT HOME as a Concrete 101 text. On the flip side, I imagine that concrete professionals will be equally dissatisfied with the brief instructions Chen includes for complicated concrete projects - such as working with forms and building walls (!). In trying to please everyone, I suspect Chen's resulting treatise will fall short of everyone's expectations.
Even so, CONCRETE AT HOME is a must-read for those interested in concrete and its applications. It may be a bit spotty in coverage, but it's by far one of the most interesting, engaging, and inspiring concrete books I've yet to come across.
Now I can't wait to get started on those floors!
this is a great book.......2007-04-27
I love this book- i own it as well as his original concrete counter top book and both work well as a team- this is a great book with interesting ideas and enough pictures and commentary to allow a DIYer to figure it out and turn out a successful product.
GAVE ME IDEAS.......2007-04-05
This book has given me an insight into what is available out there in the concrete world. Good book for the beginner trying to make concrete into an art piece.
Fu-Tung Cheng hits a home run again!.......2007-02-23
WOW! Rare is the book that fulfills a professional carpenter's point of view and sound principles of design at the same time. Anyone who wants to know more about concrete formwork and designing owe it to themselves to buy this book. As for me I will watch for the next book by Fu-Tung Cheng as I expect it to yet again be a high caliber publication.
Great book.......2007-01-22
Very diverse examples of finished / polished concrete. Also includes some basic how-to projects.
Book Description
Emphasizes actual structural design, not analysis, of multistory buildings for seismic resistance. Strong emphasis is placed on specific detailing requirements for construction. Fundamental design principles are presented to create buildings that respond to a wide range of potential seismic forces, which are illustrated by numerous detailed examples. The discussion includes the design of reinforced concrete ductile frames, structural walls, dual systems, reinforced masonry structures, buildings with restricted ductility and foundation walls. In addition to the examples, full design calculations are given for three prototype structures.
Customer Reviews:
Important book for Structural Engineers.......2007-01-10
This is an important book to all the structural engineers that will work in seismic areas.
beware of missing pages.......2006-09-06
Superb text, even in 2006. Must-have reference for seismic design of reinforced concrete structures. Contains good depth of info on shear wall design not available in more elementary texts.
If buying used, ask reseller to verify that the book has pages 713 onward (which includes, but is not limited to all references and index) before buying. Apparently, Wiley had a bad run.
Must Have.......2002-10-31
A must have text/reference book for the structural engineering library. Great resources in topics ranging from concete shear wall design to masonry shear wall design. Highly recomended.
A comprehensive guide to Earthquake Engineering.......1999-11-25
A careful theoretical approach to earthquake engineering design, soon will become a standard reference book for the academic as well as the practising engineer. The part dealing with load bearing masonry construction is a clasic!

Customer Reviews:
"The Book".......2006-11-02
The "Bible" for structural engineers for decades past and present. Updated and a "must have" for the structural design engineer. The place to start when a new problem is encountered.
Useful resource.......2004-03-17
It's a book with many useful information, tables and examples. A really valued reference.
Unit problem.......1999-07-18
This book is quite good but its usability is lost to a great extent because it is not written in Metric units. Also, chapters on computer application are not well written
Book Description
The Construction Manuals from Edition Detail are among the most important reference works in the specialist literature. The latest volume shows the potential of the material concrete and documents comprehensively the technical principles of using concrete in construction. Chapters cover the history of the material, the properties of concrete, reinforced concrete, and prestressed concrete, the treatment of its surface. Also covered are the basic principles of statics for large and small structures, and the building requirements with respect to heat, damp, sound-proofing and fire protection according to the most recent norms and standards. Finally a large number of built examples are presented from illustrations of the complete structure down to detailed plans, showing the broad spectrum of applications for concrete in contemporary building. All plans have been specially produced by the editorial department Detail for this book and for ease of comparison, they have been drawn to the same scale.
Customer Reviews:
German through and through.......2003-05-29
Craftsmanship is to the Germans what style is to the French, tradition is to the British, or independence is to the Americans, and it shows in these books: the drawings, coated paper, printing, and so on are all head and shoulders above the competition. The basic format for all the books is the same--history, followed by science and engineering, followed by examples. In this book, the technical section emphasizes structural matters, with a large chapter on precast construction. There's nothing on reinforcement requirements because they're covered in building codes. Shell structures are discussed, and another chapter covers surface finishes. The translation to English is OK but lacks the nuances that make for pleasant reading.
Too bad there is nothing for the US architect of this quality, because all the technical references are to German or European standards. But they're educational nonetheless.

Book Description
This updated edition includes the following new information: the current procedures for providing quality control of the consistency of concrete strength; the computerized design of slabs; and all new material about column design. It also serves as an effective tutor for those in classes in architecture, architectural engineering and engineering technology and is an excellent reference, too, for practicing architects and engineers.
Customer Reviews:
Schaum's Concrete.......2007-09-12
College texts only provide so many good examples and are sparse on the details. Schaum's fills in a large explanatory gap.
Too out-of-date .......2007-08-03
This reference is useful as a review of various types of concrete construction. However, it was last revised in 1993 and refers to the 1989 American Concrete Institute code, so while the content is generally correct, many of the code provisions have since changed.
Buyer Beware.......2005-09-13
An excellent outline for the ACI 89/92 Code. However, it is NOT for the current ACI code! If you are designing with the older version of the Code, this book is great. If you are using the 2002 or 2005 Code, this book is essentially obsolete.
I somehow missed that when I ordered the book.

Need a replacement.......2002-02-15
I bought the original first edition in 1980 to prepare for my P.E. exam. As I work very often with concrete design, this book is a must have. I really wore out my old copy (which I had to go to several stores to find back then) and could never find a new one. Thank you Amazon for this opportunity.
The nice thing is that it is easy to understand, and gives related info on retaining walls, (what I work with, mostly) and soil mechanics.
So after 20 years, I am grateful for this opportunity. One can not say enough about the Schaum's Series. I graduated college 30 years ago next month with a degree in Civil Engineering, and if it weren't for Schaum's (and Cliff's notes for that English Class) I don't know how I would ever have done it.
Agree all the titles that I have had experience with are excellent, simple to understand, and economical, too even though the current prices are more than they were 20-30 years ago when I purchased most of my Schaum's library. Keep up the good work.
Good for beginners as well as practicing engineers.......1999-11-06
This is a nice book on reinforced concrete design. Although it aims mainly to students, you will be benefitted even if you are a practicing engineer. It is mainly written on ACI code on both USCS & SI units, but the book is useful even if you follow some other country's code. It covers all basic & some advanced design concepts. Chapters include - materials, loads, design methods & preocedures, shear, torsion, detailing, servicability, columns, footings, beam, slabs, retaining walls etc. Main asset of the book is that it is very concise, yet covered almost everythin with a good number of solved problems.
Book Description
The 13th edition of the classic text, Design of Concrete Structures, is completely revised using the newly released 2002 American Concrete Institute (ACI) Code. This new edition has the same dual objectives as the previous editions: first to establish a firm understanding of the behavior of structural concrete, then to develop proficiency in the methods used in current design practice.
Design of Concrete Structures covers the behavior and design aspects of concrete and provides thoroughly updated examples and homework problems throughout. The 13th edition also features a new chapter, Chapter 10, covering strut-and-tie models. The text also presents the basic mechanics of structural concrete and methods for the design of individual members for bending, shear, torsion, and axial force, and provides detail in the various types of structural systems applications.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-04-12
The notable thing about this Book by Nilson, Darwin and Dolan is that it covers not only the Design of Concrete Structures but also the the behavior of various elements, an understanding of which is absolutely necessary for the design Engineer. The background of the provisions of ACI 318 code is clearly explained. The examples and homework problems may be quite useful to the students. It also covers emerging topics such as strut-and-tie models, which are useful in situations when the usual beam theories are not valid. The text also presents Earthquake detailing and the various types of structural systems applications, which are of great help to the practising engineers. Hope they will bring out the 14th edition soon, in line with ACI 318-2005.
Design of Concrete Structures .......2007-02-07
I actually enjoy reading this text book. The theory is well written, and the examples and derivations are easy to follow and understand. As an Engineering student of Junior standing, I believe this is the best written text book I have ever purchased.
its good refrence for Civil Engineers.......2005-01-20
I read this book with board members of Iranian Concrete Institute and find it useful for students and civil engineers, Arthur H Nilson write this book very friendly, I must say I found this book very interesting for both students and teachers and very good reference for study in academic classes.
great book @great str. design informations.......2002-01-25
i,would like to thank DR. NILSON for his great effort to submit
concrete design in a very simple and professional way.
i like this book and i have last four editions .
i am waiting mor from our great DR NILSON .
Useful and comprehensive book for practitioners.......2001-05-22
This book is very good for practitioners who need to look up something they have forgotten. It can be useful for beginning students, but as far as understanding concepts is concerned, MacGregor's is the best. For a beginner, Nilson's book sometimes gets too cluttered. MacGregor's book covers almost everything in Nilson's book, but with greater emphasis on conceptual understanding.
Customer Reviews:
Best Book on Prestressed Concrete.......2007-09-02
This is the long awaited second edition to his 1st edition from 1982. It's not as clean and concise as his first edition, but it is now the best book on prestressed concrete on the market. It is accurate and thorough. It covers the theory, more rigorous approaches to analysis and design, and simplified methods which are more code based. It covers prestressed concrete design per ACI and AASHTO codes. One downside is that it's long since it covers each topic from multiple angles and becomes a bit difficult to find the information you're looking for. A second downside is that is only covers through the 2002 ACI building code.

Formwork: A practical guide
ASIN: 0070498385 |
Book Description
Dramatically slash the cost of formwork design and construction. With the expense of creating concrete formwork so high--often exceeding the cost of the concrete and steel used in the project itself--you need the Third Edition of R. L. Peurifoy and G. D. Oberlander's Formwork for Concrete Structures. This authoritiative working tool shows you how to cut costs by making the most of the material, time, labor, and equipment required to design, erect, and remove formwork. You get complete details on state-of-the-art materials and technology plus fast access to scores of tables and practical examples that help you sidestep costly, guesswork and trial-and-errors methods. A completely up-to-date list of formwork material suppliers rounds out this one-of-a-kind money saver.
Book Description
In recent years concrete has re-emerged as a prime building material, highly rated amongst architects - in particular the younger generation - because of its sculptural qualities and range of textures. There have been great advances in the material itself, with many varieties, textures and colours of concrete now available. This book provides a systematic overview of concrete's applications, illustrated by an inspiring selection of some 25 significant international projects, including David Chipperfield's Rowing Museum in Henley-on-Thames, Ben van Berkel's Moebius House, Carme Pinos & Enric Miralles' school building in Morella and Sir Norman Foster's Social Science Centre in Oxford. David Bennett is a trained civil engineer and practising architect based near London. He is a consultant in the field of concrete building and author of many publications on architecture and construction.
Customer Reviews:
Thin Slump!.......2002-11-27
If your a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright, Sarah Susanka, and Malcolm Wells then this overpriced book will disappoint you. It shows a bunch (22) of cold, lifeless modern concrete buildings. For me books put out by the Portland Cement Association are much better at a fraction of the cost. If your into Concrete Architecture then add it to your library only if you can pick it up somewhere for 1/4 it's price.
