What The World's Movers & Shakers Are Thinking.......2004-10-19
This is a great book and easy to read. All readings in the book attempt to answer the question: Why are we here? Small concise answers from the world's most recongizable people. Lots of pictures as only Life can take. The whole idea? Make you think too.
Wisdom and art.......2000-07-11
This book greatly combines the art of photography, philosophy and real life stories. The world's most famous and respected people share their thoughts on the meaning of life; their words of wisdom are dispersed among excellent black and white photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Does this book really answer your questions?.......2006-11-10
The book raises many important questions, from 'why are we here?' to 'why do the innocent suffer?' However, the individual chapters are inconsistent, uneven in quality, and on occasion, they really address questions for other chapters, but not their own.
It was difficult to know who the real audience of the book was. I would guess it was written for the educated layperson, rather than the specialist. However, some of the chapters are written with a rather academic style and approach that can be off-putting to the average non-seminarian.
The book could/should have had better editing. The only thing that links the chapters together is that all of the authors were students at Yale Divinity School. Each of them represents a different tradition or denomination within Christianity. Perhaps that is the strength of the book -- it has contributions from many different parts of the U.S. Christian community.
By far, the best part of the book is the suggestions for additional reading at the end of each chapter.
Theological depth and ready accessibility:a rare combination.......1999-06-24
This book is an extraordinary find: a collection of theological essays that can be mined for equal profit by college and seminary students, church groups, and anyone interested in critically exploring how everyday life can be powerfully illuminated and reconfigured by the resources of the Christian tradition. Two features in particular distinguish this book and make it especially worthwhile. First is the clarity (and occasional elegance) of the writing -- no small feat considering the number of authorial voices and the depth of these compact essays. Identifying the book's second and most important virtue is a bit more complex. Organized around questions that might be asked by any reflective believer (and by others as well), the collection should prove inviting to non-specialist readers. Yet the essays don't condescend; rather they draw the thoughtful reader into a subtly sophisticated conversation about theology and the questions of our lives. Most remarkably, they do so while demonstrating a rich alternative to what might, too simply, be called a "correlationist" approach to theology. No prior systematic account of the human condition or human religiousness generates the chapter-title questions or orders the theological meditations prompted by them. Instead, each question is considered freshly by the theologian who takes it on. Although they spare readers arcane discussion of theological method (and cheerfully make ad hoc use of conceptual tools from various disciplines), the authors' diverse responses to the questions in fact make a cumulative case for the independent integrity and sense-making power of Christian affirmations and practices. (Here, one may surmise, is the legacy of the so-called "Yale school.") There's nothing else on the market quite like this book, at least as far as I can tell. I will use it with my own students. It's a pleasure to recommend it to others.
Book Description
In these intensely personal essays, contemporary writers probe their experiences in and thoughts about one of our most enduring social and cultural institutions. Husbands and wives celebrate marriages that work, mourn those that don't, and write frankly about adultery. Includes essays by Mark Doty, Gerald Early, Barbara Ehrenreich, Cynthia Heimel, Vivian Gornick, Phillip Lopate, Nancy Mairs, and David Mamet.
Customer Reviews:
Witty and insightful but limited.......2000-11-12
As with many anthologies of individual experiences, Here Lies My Heart relies on common themes--coping with the routine of a relationship, straying vs. staying, self vs. couple's identity. Overall it hit a negative note. It also overlooked a growing segment of the population--those who have never married and managed to find a degree of contentment. This book wasn't about why people don't marry--it was about how people work through staying in or leaving a marriage.
Head and shoulder above other books in this genre.......2000-03-16
I've been reading a lot of books about love and relationships in connection with a book I'm working on, and this collections of essays was so superior to the others in the quality of the writing and the honesty and charm of the personal accounts (with a few notable exceptions, including Edward Hoagland's essay) that I made a special effort to post a comment here. This would be an excellent book to give a friend who has a perfectly wonderful marriage that he or she is thinking of walking out on, or to someone who's just experiencing a case of the marriage blahs.
Intimate, moving, thought-provoking.......1999-12-13
The stories in this book are lovely. They are sad, moving, deeply thought-out vignettes of various aspects of marriage, married life and/or relationships. The stories probably won't change your life but the reader is afforded an intimate glimpse into the private, often painful and loving world of relationships. I found the writing in many of the stories to be breathtaking.
A singularly great collection.......1999-09-16
A group of brief stories that illuminate just a few of the thousands of facets of relationships -- those sweet or disappointing and everything in between.
Unfortunately alot of shared experiences but no answers........1999-05-30
In the middle of my almost 27 years of marriage I find myself trying to find answers to unversal questions of Where did the love go?, Should I still hang around here in this marriage etc. It is not all that bad, but is this all there is. I saw alot of myself here and many others. I found no anwers except that what I was feeling and experiencing was not at all uncommon. This did make me feel less guilty about these feelings. I did conclude that these authors had a alot of time to worry about their relationships. Some seemed to be in such a turmoil and I just wanted to say come on shape up and do something.

Book Description
This book contains the results of 28 years of research that tried to find an answer to the question "Why are we here?" that could be supported by science, not just belief or opinion. Scientific answers were found...with many of them being presented for the first time in this book. The author, Dennis Marcellino, started out as an award-winning mathematician and scientist. In a very inspired search to find the ultimate truths about this life and our place in it, he took his analytical abilities, science knowledge and hungry heart and delved deeply into nearly every major and minor form of psychology, philosophy, spirituality and religion.

Extraordinarily lucid analysis of the Christian thesis.......2005-07-09
The writer explains and proves the existance of God using logic and faith. His English is not the most perfect, but his brilliant intelligence and perseverance in helping the reader conquers all his limitations. It is one of the best Christian books I have ever read.
Owen N. Martinez, Leader, Cursillos of Christianity Movement, St. Clare Catholic Church, Deltona, Florida
This book makes sense.......2005-06-15
When deciding whether or not to read this book, it would be important for the reader to ask him or herself this question: "Am I in search of the truth?" Why Are We Here? looks at the world and the answers this question that we all have asked ourselves at some point. It offers scientific explainations and insightful life examples to explain why the truth of Christianity and the Bible are the sources of fulfillment in this life. By using simple examples, such as the comparison between using a car manual to operate a car and using the Bible as a users guide for people, this book makes sense. If the reader is willing to embark on a world view spelled out with reason and conversation, this is the right book to read.
Excellent, Inspiring Book.......2005-06-07
This book really does answer the question 'What is the meaning of life?' in a very logically satisfying and inspiring way. And it is also filled with fresh, insightful reflections on all aspects of life that uplift and enlighten the reader... He has done a fantastic job in putting together this extremely valuable book. Obviously I highly, highly recommend it!
A probing and compelling work. .......2005-04-03
Dennis Marcellino's "Why Are We Here?" is a probing and compelling work that merges his scientific, philosophical,
and theological educational background with his musical life experiences to create the answer to this age old question.
Madeline Frank, Ph.D. author of "The Teaching of Science and Math Through Music", how to have brighter children through music and "Musical Notes On Math", teaching fractions and decimals through the rhythm of music. www.madelinefrankviola.com
A Book For Everyone.......2004-10-13
"Why are We Here?" is a book for everyone. Have you ever wondered what Christians actually believe? Now, you can find out without having to ask anyone. Dennis Marcellino has written a well organized account of why we are here.
Marcellino, who has a wide range of education, has written an organized account with out being overly scientific or overly pushy with his personal beliefs. Interestingly enough, it is his musical abilities that you would most likely know him for, having belonged to the Tokens who had the hit, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight."
I highly recommend "WHY WE ARE HERE?" to Christians and "Non-Christians" alike will gain information here. Christians will have an organized account of what they believe and why. Others will have an account of what Christians believe and why.

Book Description
The Other Sky details the authors 88+ combined years of true-life encounters with spiritual and non-terrestrial beings, abductions by extraterrestrial entities, UFO and spiritual encounters.
This is the world of The Other Sky--a world filled with paranormal events, and encounters with extraterrestrial and spiritual beings. The combining of the real and paranormal worlds was both the authors' challenge and their destiny.
Customer Reviews:
written from the heart.......2005-08-27
I loved this book it really captured the abduction experience. David's not understanding and life long journey in to trying to make since of it was heartfelt. Landi's acceptance and fighting spirit were really inspiring. This book is written by people who were there. I know this is true. Don't expect this book to entertain you like some block buster kind of entertainment. Its not. It is two people telling their experiences. And worthy of being accepted as such. You may just find similarities to their experiences in your life.
Not my cup of tea........2005-03-23
This was, from my point of view, very boring and slow moving. It really didn't pick up until one half the way through the book. Personally, I was hoping for much more "hard" science and observations, but instead the book is filled with all kinds of "New Age" wisdom. I am not being critical of the experiencers, nor am I questioning their validity. My comments are on the substance of the book and the material presented. You could, if you wanted to, write the book in a "Cliff Note" style... I was asleep. Aliens woke me up. They floated me to their craft. They conducted experiments on me. They led me back to my bed. I slept.
What became interesting was when the writer started to make claims to be a translator for a galatic federation. Um...OK. But still, even these unique insights were not able to provide me with the meat and potatoes that I needed and desired from this book. I found the book to be a disapointment and I do not recommend it for researchers searching for definative hard observations.
What an amazing story!.......2004-03-30
After reading "The Other Sky" I believe the authors are telling the truth, and have had contact with entities outside of our normal understanding. I have been studying the UFO phenomenon for a number of years, and Landi and David's stories are typical of most UFO abductees, including Whitley Strieber.
The typical abduction experiencer has a history of involvement with the paranormal, the occult, and/or New Age beliefs. Most have a strong belief in reincarnation and other Eastern philosophies as well.
If you want to know the true identity of the beings of "The Other Sky" I strongly recommend you read "Alien Encounters" by Chuck Missler.
Simply Fascinating.......2003-12-28
This is a GREAT BOOK FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO KNOW MORE about this preplexing and fascinating subject. Caywood and Mellas are gifted story tellers with a lot of heart and new insight. I recommend this book highly!!!
What a great book - The Other Sky.......2003-11-07
Based on the reviews of others, and word of mouth, I bought this book and loved it!!! This book goes were no other has gone before (or will I might add). I highly recomend Caywood and Mellas's groundbreaking work in The Other Sky.

Reviewed by Jeanette Cain for Reader Views (7/06)
I don't know about you, but I often wonder what life means to me. Most of us have at one time or another played the game Life or read Life magazine. Author Allen Klein remembers the Life magazine well. In his introduction, of "Reflections on Life", he tells, of a word, game he played as a child that describes the popular magazine, and life itself.
What's Life?
A magazine.
How much does it cost?
Twenty-five cents.
I only have a dime.
That's tough.
What's tough?
Life.
What's Life?
A magazine.
I was hooked after reading the first page. I knew I had to read every word. This book is a collection of about five hundred quotations. Quotations are written by many famous and not so famous people.
All the quotes are from people of all walks of life, about life. I tried to choose a favorite quote, but it just was not possible. I loved them all. Many of the quotes that jumped out at me were in the sections titled: "How to Enjoy the Journey". If I had to choose just two I would choose one written by Margie Klein. My second choice would be one written by American actor, Harvey Fierstein.
This book of quotes is a must read. My recommendation is for everyone and every age. I also suggest buying several copies to give to friends and family. They don't call Allen Klein the "Jolly-tologist" for nothing!
This Is My Kind Of Book.......2006-07-15
What do Tiger Woods and the Dalai Lama have in common? How about Grandma Moses and Gilda Radner? Albert Einstein and Yogi Berra?Or, what about Friedrich Nietzsche and Julia Roberts? The answer is that their quotes on life are all contained in Allen Klein's book, "Reflections on Life: Why We're Here And How To Enjoy The Journey." In fact, this gem of a book contains the wisdom, pathos, and humor of hundreds and hundreds of well known people from ancient through contemporary times. However, one of my favorite quotes is from an anonymous source:
Remember, life is not what happens to you but what you make of what happens to you. Everyone dies, but not everyone fully lives. Too many people are having "near-life experiences."
This is my kind of book. It's easy to read and digest, but is packed with reflections that may have a significant impact on your life. Highly recommended as a gift to yourself or someone you care about.
Life is a Journey to be Enjoyed.......2006-07-14
Best selling author, Allen Klein has collected quotations from 500 well known personalities on their philosophy of life and its' meaning. The book is made up of three sections, with answers to three questions. "What's life?", "Why we're here?" and "How to enjoy the journey."
The quotations tie to a theme within each of these subjects. The text is made up of quotes that are sometimes humorous, sometimes inspirational, sometimes encouraging, and often profound. A random sample is from Annie Dillard, American writer: "How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives."
Another is from Rick Warren, from the "Purpose Driven Life." "One of the greatest gifts God has given you is the ability to enjoy pleasure...He wants you to enjoy life, not just endure it."
To get the greatest benefit and enjoyment from your reading you must read and assimilate a few pages at a time. Reading between the lines while doing some soul searching I was reminded to "lighten up", to "loosen up", and "not take myself so seriously."
The author has included a complete index of authors. This becomes a handy tool for referring back to some of those favorite quotes or quips you want to read again.
This is a book for your coffee table, your night stand, and an excellent book to pass along to a friend. Keep an extra copy on hand to use as a gift for those special occasions.
Take time to reflect.......2006-07-11
The wonderful quotations in "Reflections on Life" offer everything from ancient wisdom to contemporary humor. Klein's collection of inspiring quotes are gathered from both well-known and lesser known figures. I particularly like being able to turn to any of the sections ("What's Life?," "Why We're Here," "How to
Enjoy the Journey"), read a quotation or two, put the book aside for a while, and then spend some time considering its message.
Buy "Reflections on Life" and then take time to reflect.
The Gifted Journey.......2006-07-10
If you have ever doubted why you are here, "Reflections on Life" will definitely help you find your purpose. It is an amazing collection of wisdom from far and near, yesterday and today. This book is an awesome journey on life, from some of the world's wisest men and women. Take this journey, with the author, Allen Klein, and begin to live your best life.

The Unbelievable Truth
ASIN: 1400081718
Release Date: 2005-03-22 |
Book Description
“I want people to know there is more to life than what we can see—and it is not as far beyond our reach as we imagine. It is ordinary, everyday, here and now. And it is magical, a gift.”
Mia Dolan was twenty-two when she first heard a voice she could not explain. She had always considered herself to be a down-to-earth person and certainly never believed in psychic phenomena. But now that this voice had spoken to her, strange things began to happen: she “left” her body and walked through the house; she “saw” a plane crash in horrific detail, then witnessed the same scene on the news that evening. She thought she was going insane.
This was the beginning of Mia’s discovery that she had a rare psychic ability. Although she was tragically unable to help her brother, whose death she foresaw but could not prevent, Mia has dedicated her life to helping others with her power. She is now one of the world’s foremost psychics, connecting loved ones to those they have lost.
I Know Why We’re Here is the fascinating story of an ordinary woman’s extraordinary gift and an inspirational life lived with raw honesty, humor, and compassion.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting psychic awakening........2007-03-23
I read this book in a day. It was that absorbing. I was touched by Mia's challenges and impressed by her desire to help others. The stories of her awakening psychic life were fascinating and told in a way that was quite down to earth. I truly enjoyed this book.
Biography of a Reluctant Psychic.......2006-02-14
The title catches your eye, but Mia Dolan's lifelong struggles against poverty, abusive men, and family losses makes an interesting memoir even if the psychic parts were omitted. It details her efforts to survive verbal and physical abuse and to make a life for herself and her children and to overcome the circumstances and poor choices that try to drag her down.
Adding another dimension to this, is the awakening of her "gift" which enables her to help others. For those skeptical of anything they cannot see for themselves, this may seem too airy-fairy. For those with open minds, it's fascinating to see the development of Mia's psychic skills.
This book was published in Britain under the title, The Gift.

This book called out to me at the library yesterday and I picked it up, not even knowing whether it was fiction or non-fiction, what it was about even. At home, I began reading it after lunch and ignored everything I had to do around the house as I turned page after page, totally enthralled by Mia's world. I ended up staying up until midnight to finish this wonderful book and wishing I had another book to start immediately! It was fantastic.

Book Description
"Why me?" I said aloud.
There was no answer, so I carried on.
"Why not pick on a nun, or someone really spiritual?"
The answer, when it came, was dry.
"Your guess," he said, "is as good as mine."
Mia Dolan was twenty-two when she first heard a voice she could not explain. She had always considered herself to be a down-to-earth person and certainly never believed in psychic phenomena. But now that this voice had spoken to Mia, strange things began to happen: she "left" her body and walked through the house; she "saw" a plane crash in horrific detail, then witnessed the same scene on the news that evening. She thought she was going insane.
Finally, Mia discovered that she had a rare psychic gift and learned how to control and use it. Though she realized that she could not cure grief, she decided to use her gift to connect loved ones to those they had lost. This power took on a new, deeply personal dimension when, a few years later, Mia tragically foresaw the murder of her own brother and had to endure the loss of her young son.
I Know Why We’re Here is the fascinating story of an ordinary woman’s extraordinary gift--an inspirational life lived with raw honesty, humor, and compassion.

PROOF OF ETERNAL LIFE.......2004-11-06
I believe the title is misdirected and should be what I have captioned this review. There was nothing I could discover of explaining why we're here. Nevertheless, this is a fine book that does reassure us of an afterlife from an author who has had more than her share of life problems and heartache. Some of it was brought about by herself, such as allowing her husband to almost kill her more than once and not leave him 'til around 15 years had passed. This is an autobiography and most interesting indeed. She talks of events that happened to her and of her realization that she could communicate with the other side of life and how she has helped others for many years now. A good read!
Un-put-downable!!.......2004-06-04
I read this in one late-night sitting. What a life!!! I was fascinated by the subject, in turns horrified by the terrible trials of the author, uplifted by her resilience and humour, moved to tears at her ability to forgive her old abuser. Her handling of the deaths of her brother and son give hope. A great book that I plan to buy for at least three friends who are either interested in the subject or struggling with grief. I highly recommend it!
An Excellent Read.......2004-05-31
I loved this book - found it very personal and convinving about psychic ability and how it feels to suddenly receive this unusual "gift." Mia Dolan's insights into why we are here and how much influence we can have are thought-provoking and offered with simplicity and no preachiness. Her final words, that "we learn through suffering" are consoling to those who always wonder why life can be so difficult. Readers will wish for a little psychic ability after reading this book.

A Good Read!.......2004-04-22
Do you feel that your employees just don't grapple with the tasks at hand? Take heart. This handbook offers one way to solve one of the major conundrums of modern management: how do we get things done? Authors Robert E. Lefton and Jerome T. Loeb focus on a productivity-oriented Task Management Model that requires managers to categorize employees along a spectrum of capabilities, including which jobs they like best and do well. Then, the model helps managers understand their own leadership styles and assign the right tasks to the right people to increase efficiency. The book cites examples of its model in use, but it is short on analysis, insights and detailed cases. However, .We think it would be useful to managers and human resources professionals in large organizations who need a quick way to categorize staff members in hopes of improving productivity.
