Book Description

A Straightforward, No-Nonsense Guide to Building the Most Accurate, Complete, and Useful Data Models Possible. How do I know if my data model is accurate? When is a model really complete? Is it possible for a model to be both technically perfect and of no use to an organization, and what can I do to avoid that problem? This book provides answers to these and other crucial data modeling questions. While there are plenty of books that describe the characteristics of finished high-quality data models, only The Data Modeling Handbook gets down to the nitty-gritty of actually building one. Packed with real-world examples, annotated diagrams, and a wealth of rules and best practices, this field-tested guide provides experienced data modelers, architects, and engineers with hands-on guidance from two noted data management experts.

1 out of 5 stars Poor choice for experienced modelers - just ok for beginners.......2004-05-14

This book oversimplifies the examples and expects a leap of faith to truly understand the information engineering technique of data modeling.

May be good in the class room; but in actual practice there are much better references available such as Silverston, Inmon, Kimball, and of course the Zachman framework.

1 out of 5 stars Very academic in nature, more theory than reality.......2004-02-05

Anyone that has been modeling very long will see this book for what it is ... after you look at it once, you'll put it on your bookshelf and leave it there. Save yourself the money ... There are much better reference books available. Try David Hay's book on patterns, or Len Silverston, or Graeme Simsion. Check out the DAMA reference guide .. at least it's built by actual practitioners.

The help screens on the Data modeling tools are more advanced in explaining data modeling than this book.

Probably great for theorists - managers or teachers that don't know what they are doing! But the real modelers will seek help elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars Misleading or, if you want, wrong.......2003-09-26

The authors deny the fifth normal form and state special-case rules as if they were universal. Examples: Eliminate triads; Two entities cannot have more than one relationship. Although in some specific situations the advice might be valid, anyone who is trying to learn from the reading will be misled. Less harmful, even interesting, for a professor (to learn how not to approach the teaching of DB modeling).

Poor, underdocumented examples. Oversimplification. Unfortunately at the time I had only the title to choose from. Good thing most books now have a table of contents.

Database modeling still doesn't have strong references as database theory does (Date's, Ramakrishnan's, Elmasri's only to cite three). There are excellent theoretical (Thalheim's "Entity-Relationship Modeling" is good) and philosophical approaches (finally they re-published Kent's opera-prima "Data and Reality", fabulous).

The picture is poor when it comes to hands-on modeling. Bruce's "Designing Quality Databases..." is an exception. Good and useful for someone who is developing modeling expertise. But I especially don't recommend Reingruber&Gregory's book.

5 out of 5 stars Very good one to start a good model.......2003-08-28

It is a very good book for a Data base designer and a data modeler. I strongly recommand this book to all database people.

2 out of 5 stars I'd rather visit the dentist.......2003-03-25

This book is about as much fun to read as a book about differential equations. Good concepts, but the context is very dry and puts me to sleep. I've been in the industry for several years, and I bought this book as a reference. But I find myself cringing every time I need to use it.

Book Description

Agent-based computational modeling is changing the face of social science. In Generative Social Science, Joshua Epstein argues that this powerful, novel technique permits the social sciences to meet a fundamentally new standard of explanation, in which one "grows" the phenomenon of interest in an artificial society of interacting agents: heterogeneous, boundedly rational actors, represented as mathematical or software objects. After elaborating this notion of generative explanation in a pair of overarching foundational chapters, Epstein illustrates it with examples chosen from such far-flung fields as archaeology, civil conflict, the evolution of norms, epidemiology, retirement economics, spatial games, and organizational adaptation. In elegant chapter preludes, he explains how these widely diverse modeling studies support his sweeping case for generative explanation.

This book represents a powerful consolidation of Epstein's interdisciplinary research activities in the decade since the publication of his and Robert Axtell's landmark volume, Growing Artificial Societies. Beautifully illustrated, Generative Social Science includes a CD that contains animated movies of core model runs, and programs allowing users to easily change assumptions and explore models, making it an invaluable text for courses in modeling at all levels.

I am a purchasing agent who buys books for my faculty, and as far as I know, this faculty member is very impressed with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent example of cross-disciplinary social science using theory.......2007-08-07

It's refreshing and exciting, in a quiet intellectual kind of way, to encounter a book that includes philosophy of science, music theory, Anasazi disappearance mysteries, ethnic cleansing, and an explanation of why CEOs exist. Josh has produced the book I've been wanting to read any time during the last 20 years, which have been a bit barren from the theory and modeling perspective in social science. He also makes clear the mathematical and philosophical basis of the agent-based approach, producing a baseline both for future work in the field and for competing paradigms such as systems dynamics, discrete simulations, and cellular automata (Wolfram's New Kind of Science), however incommensurable. I was particularly interested in the occasional use of probability modeling (negative exponential distributions generated through simple rules are a very interesting advance in understanding the waiting times between civil violence outbursts) and I'd love to see a deeper relationship established, say between Bayesian models of dynamic systems and agent-based models. Keep up the great work, Josh! Also, kudos to the publisher for the sheer quality of the book: excellent paper, great color plates, and priced to sell rather than as the work of art it is.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent survey of the author's work.......2007-07-27

This book did a good job of introducing me to the current state of agent-based modeling. It also, perhaps inadvertently, highlighted some of the current weaknesses of the field. In particular, the models shown in each paper rarely shared common features, and there was little consistency in method.

Epstein argues persuasively that agent-based modeling is a tool, not a methodological approach, and you should no sooner expect consistent usage here than with differential calculus. That said, it was a bit disconcerting.

Also, while the goal espoused here was to use the bare minimum of constraints that retain explanatory power, I was disappointed that relevant work from other fields was often abstracted away. For example, a few models used social networks; but the networks presented were static, not dynamic, and were not built around power-law ratios. Such additional complexity may well have distracted from the main point; but it would have been nice to see at least some discussion of why the models were simplified.

Regardless, I was very pleased with the book and would highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A Landmark Publication.......2007-03-08

Josh Epstein's new Opus is a landmark publication in the emerging field of multiagent-based simulation of dynamic social systems. Since Josh is not only one of this still nascent (though burgeoning) field's ablest and most creative practitioners, but also among its most thoughtful critics, the reader of has two treats in store: (1) a generous, and wide-ranging, sampling of case studies (including social networks and evolution, population growth, emergence of economic classes, civil unrest, timing of retirement, the dynamics of adaptive organizations and the spread of infectious disease), and (2) a cogent "meta" discussion of what multiagent models ARE, ARE NOT and how (when their properties and limitations are *not* properly taken account of) they can easily be MISAPPLIED.

Far from suggesting that multiagent-based models are a panacea solution to all (or most) social dynamical systems, Josh's book carefully articulates the conditions for which such an approach IS (and is NOT) appropriate; an approach rarely taken by other, similar, overviews of the field. Indeed, the cogent philosophical discussion in Chapter One - alone! - in which the generativist's position is defined and put into a broader modeling/simulation context, is worth the price of admission; I have not seen a better "manifesto" of multiagent-based modeling elsewhere.

Finally, without taking away any of the inherent "beauty" (in the technical sense) of the often exaggerated concept of "emergence," Josh succeeds admirably in both defining the term, and de-mystifying it, stripping it of some of its unnecessary "quasi-mystical" baggage (at least as it is often portrayed in lay publications).

Anyone who is interested in understanding how agent models may be used to help explore the dynamics of social dynamical systems, should have this book firmly on top of their "must read" list! Josh has generously provided future generations of agent explorers their go-to source of both inspiration and ideas. Well done Josh!

5 out of 5 stars Integrated view of modern CMOS technology from the world expert.......2006-08-16

I've read a number of books in this field - Plummer, Wolf, Campbell, Sze, Madou. Each book has its strength, and Plummer's book stands out in terms of its broad, in-depth coverage of modern silicon CMOS technology. It doesn't cover MEMS or other exotic nanofabrication.

Many students who've read the book said that Chap 2, where a modern CMOS process flow is described step by step from the substrate to back-end, was the best part. By doing so, the authors teach us that not only unit processes but their collection, i.e. process integration, is the key in successful CMOS technology.

Overall, the quality of the content and attention to small details are superb, as one can expect from a book written by one of world's foremost researchers in the field (Plummer is the Dean of Engineering School at Stanford). In particular, I liked chap2 for integrated description of CMOS flow, the lithography chapter which covers optical systems, details of photoresists, phase shift masking. Also, diffusion and ion implantation parts are second to none, since the authors made numerous contributions to the research field. It's such pleasure to learn about the latest in silicon IC processing from the Silicon Valley authority at Stanford!

The book has been adopted by many US engineering schools already, and I see it on many bookshelves belonging to IC engineers. If you need an authoritive, well-organized reference for modern silicon IC processing, I strongly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source on MODERN silicon vlsi technology.......2005-02-13

The best part of this book is that it covers modern fabrication technology. I expecially liked the approach of introducing the complete CMOS fabrication flow in the beginning. It puts a context to following chapters. It is what I call system level approach for slicon fabrication. There is also emphasis on measurement and simulutions that are missing from traditional books. Both these are essential to modern technology. Also, I was very happy to see details on manufacturing choices - e.g. LOCOS vs STI. Explanations are clear.
This is a text book, therefore at times may seem too dense, but definitely worth it if you are a process engineer.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent combinations of basics & updated research.......2000-09-01

Before this book was published, Wolf & Tauber's book was the only good reference I had. Plummer's new book has a thorough review of basic principles, very well updated parts on current manufacturing equipments (Wolf's book also has extensive coverage in this respect). The best part in my opinion is oxidation & diffusion parts where the authors are one of the leaders in current research. The book not only focuses on the specific details, but also gives an integrated view of the whole CMOS fabrication process, which I enjoyed a lot.

I strongly recommend this book for students who want to learn basics of IC fabrication and also professional engineers who needs a good and well updated reference.

5 out of 5 stars The best book for whom considers simulation rigorously!.......2001-07-15

This book looks somewhat difficult but I think that it is the best book for whom researchs modelling and simulation methodology. Based on mathematics, most contents of it were explained rigorously. From the origin of its 1976 version, now in the 2'nd book, DEVS(discrete event system specification) formalism has been extended to cover the continuous state system as well. In addition to, the various extended versions of DEVS, such as Parallel DEVS, Real-time DEVS, Fuzzy DEVS, has been aloso dealt in it.

If you are familiar with the set-theory and the system theory (dealing with inputs and outputs) and looking for the simulation methodology from any IO system view, the book must be the best book to you.

4 out of 5 stars A simulation ideas framework.......2001-05-06

This book have a bad title, must be "Theory of Modeling and Simulation with DEVS".

There are not a real Integration about Discrete Event and Continuous Complex Dynamic Systems. Only a Discret Event Systems Specification (DEVS), nothing more that DEVS. The book is anything but no visual simulation, no numerics management, no probabilities, no DAE-equations, no research operations, no object simulation, no ...

The DEVS concept born with the promise of join different formalism in the 70's (join discreet and continuous simulation), but yet the concept actually in the book is very primitive and not consider real numerical methods in only one layer (remember that many real commercial simulation software is not based in DEVS concepts. Why?, -Maybe, the DEVS concept have a rigorous and innecesary strictness in the framework concepts in modeling and simulation.)

For other hand, this book have bad thigs and good things.

Bad things:

- The algorithms presented are only fragments of pseudocode like C++ (or Java?). Where is all framework code?.
- The concepts are not in a today systemic/cibernetic vision. This is bad, because the definitions and concepts are yet of 70's. (the book is a second edition, where is the change?).
- Actually the DEVS is considered the corner stone of basic theory of discreet simulations according to autor and others, but in a book there are not real simulations for probe the theory.
- Where is THE continuous complex dynamic systems?.
- Lack of code production of real numerical and computacional methods.

The good things:

- If you don't know what is a DEVS this book is your resp.
- Is a source of excellent ideas, in special the study of Quantization and the Systems Design and Environments of M&S (IV Cap.).

Finally, the best of book is not the DEVS concepts (the book is 80% about DEVS), is the math-way how the Autor try define a basic Simulation Framework independent of the model.

Because the above, is a must have in a simulations books.

5 out of 5 stars the only book available for discrete events in OO, and HLA.......2001-01-05

The first edition of this book appeared in 1976 and had only one main author, Bernard P. Zeigler, who authored other appreciated classic text books. The first edition was already a must read for the simulation community, which has been asking for an updating. The new edition is not just a re-edition with small corrections. The advances in simulation and modelling techniques helped to design a really new edition, necessary to meet the need for a theoretical foundation. Bernie Zeigler developed a unifying formalism DEVS (Discrete Event System Specification). With DEVS it is not only possible to specify discrete event systems; it is also particularly suited to integrate both continuous and discrete paradigms for modelling and simulation (discrete time & differential equations). DEVS features are also present in the systems theory.

The first theme of this book is to propose a sound methodology for the construction of complex system models based on the unifying concept of the DEVS Bus. This concept enables the mapping into DEVS of different models expressed in various formalisms such as Petri nets, Hierarchical block diagrams, cellular automata. The second theme focuses on parallel and distributed simulation of discrete event models. Distributed simulation has the potential to support the co-existence of multiple formalisms in multimodels.

I will try to depict the merits and demerits in comparison to other current and past books. First of all, being in the simulation field for ten years now, I have to cite some complementary references. Without giving an exhaustive list of all recent valuable books in the simulation field, we can find other high quality simulation text books ; for instance for continuous simulation [Cellier 1991], for general purpose simulation [Fishwick 1995] or even for more specific object-oriented simulations [Hill 1996]. However, I must admit that this Theory of Modelling and Simulation¡¨ is the only book available to help construct efficient object-oriented simulations of DEVS models on parallel and distributed environments. In addition, modelers who have to deal with HLA (High Level Architecture) compliant simulations will find in the book the reference to design integrative simulations.

The best significant features of this book are:

*The presentation of a comprehensive framework for continuous and discrete event modelling and simulation The exploration of the mathematical foundation of simulation modelling.

*The discussion of system morphisms for model abstraction and simplification *The presentation of a new approach to discrete event simulation of continuous processes. *The discussion of model credibility and interoperation * The highlighting of design concepts like such as modular and hierarchical model composition. *The presentation of a sound methodology to achieve parallel and distributed simulation models.

The reviewer only regrets the lack of public availability for DEVS platforms, despite the quotation of a web site, simulation environments (such as DEVSJAVA) are a real need to fully understand practical and theoretical aspects.

This book has multiple facets. From my teaching and scientific experience, I would say that the primary audience comprises engineers, scientists and other technical people working in academic institutions, but there are many chapters particularly well suited for students at a graduate or even undergraduate level. In my opinion, this was not the case of a previous book from the main author [Zeigler 1990] which was an excellent reference for specialists. I am now impressed by this ability to communicate at various levels. I strongly recommend this book for the reader interested in any kind of simulation and modelling, its impact on research in control will surely be recognized.

Book Description

This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to probability and stochastic processes, and shows how these subjects may be applied in computer performance modelling. The author's aim is to derive the theory in a way that combines its formal, intuitive, and applied aspects so that students may apply this indispensable tool in a variety of different settings. Readers are assumed to be familiar with elementary linear algebra and calculus, including the concept of limit, but otherwise this book provides a self-contained approach suitable for graduate or advanced undergraduate students. The first half of the book covers the basic concepts of probability including expectation, random variables, and fundamental theorems. In the second half of the book the reader is introduced to stochastic processes. Subjects covered include renewal processes, queueing theory, Markov processes, and reversibility as it applies to networks of queues. Examples and applications are drawn from problems in computer performance modelling.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-03-24

This book provides an excellent introduction to Discrete Distributions and their relationships in a sense that goes beyond the classical presenation in other text books. It has excellent introductory chapters on Markov Processes and Matrix Geormetric Systems. I think this book is a great book that can help in courses in Queuing and probability theory.

4 out of 5 stars Great reference for probability and related studies........2005-03-12

I have not really read this book chapter by chapter, but I always found in this book the information I needed. I initially borrowed this book from library, only to find that I simply need this book to be on my shelf for convenient reference whenever I need to understand a concept or analysis I come across somewhere else!
I only use this book as a reference, but it is a good one. I do not give it 5 stars simply because I am not sure whether all the chapters in the book are equally well written. But for the chapters (or pages) I have read, it is a great one.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and systematic........2000-12-18

This book is suitable for my graduate studies on computer performance. The author directs us from combinatorics, distribution theory, queue theory to queueing networks in a systematic way. I have read the book at ease for its stepwise elaboration of concepts. However, I have also read with hardship as it requires the readers to possess a good command of mathematics, both pure and applied, in order to go through the book.

For a mathematics graduate studying computer networks, I recommend this book. A novice or a mediocrity should pay more patience to read if not yet at a loss.

This book has aroused my interest and eagerness to know more about computer performance from the viewpoint of queueing and networking. In a word, I enjoy reading this book.

    Book Description

This Bayesian modeling book is intended for practitioners and applied statisticians looking for a self-contained entry to computational Bayesian statistics. Focusing on standard statistical models and backed up by discussed real datasets available from the book website, it provides an operational methodology for conducting Bayesian inference, rather than focusing on its theoretical justifications. Special attention is paid to the derivation of prior distributions in each case and specific reference solutions are given for each of the models. Similarly, computational details are worked out to lead the reader towards an effective programming of the methods given in the book. While R programs are provided on the book website and R hints are given in the computational sections of the book, The Bayesian Core requires no knowledge of the R language and it can be read and used with any other programming language.

The Bayesian Core can be used as a textbook at both undergraduate and graduate levels, as exemplified by courses given at Université Paris Dauphine (France), University of Canterbury (New Zealand), and University of British Columbia (Canada). It serves as a unique textbook for a service course for scientists aiming at analyzing data the Bayesian way as well as an introductory course on Bayesian statistics. The prerequisites for the book are a basic knowledge of probability theory and of statistics. Methodological and data-based exercises are included within the main text and students are expected to solve them as they read the book. Those exercises can obviously serve as assignments, as was done in the above courses. Datasets, R codes and course slides all are available on the book website.

    5 out of 5 stars A timeless reference.......2006-11-30

I won't repeat what the others have said. I will just say it is an excellent book. I first purchased the book in 1987 for a college class. Unlike most other computer books I've purchased through the years, this book is as valuable a reference today as it was in 1987. In fact, I refer to it so often (and lend it out so often) I have two copies, one in my home library and one on my quick reference shelf (right next to the dictionary) in the office. In my opinion, if one is serious about understanding simulations and computer modeling for analysis purposes this is a must have reference.

5 out of 5 stars Read it if you need to write your first simulation program.......2004-06-21

Before reading this book I didn't have a clue about simulation modeling, but after reading the first few chapters I was able to write my first simulation program in C++. Although authors use C language and global data for simulation state, you can easily apply the concept of simulation state to any object-oriented language and replace global simulation state with object state.

5 out of 5 stars Bible for Simulation.......2001-12-28

There are other books for giving you the simulation techniques and languages but to know the theory and statistics of simulation this is THE book.It startes with basics of statisstics and deals everthing you need to know about simulation. At some point you will start wondering how the authors could give so much information in just one book and lose lots of royalty money on the succeeding books.

5 out of 5 stars Better understanding, rather than point and click.......2001-02-06

This book is the ground foundation of simulation modeling. Currently, only few books in simulation will spend pages and time, dedicated to the theoretical issues as good as this book. If you're tired of point-and-click or "how-to making one server queueing system" and you want to know the fundamental of simulation, you can't overlook this piece of jewel. I don't agree with one review that you have to understand statistics in order to get this book. Simulation is a probabilistic model. Using simulation without understanding statistics results in serious trouble since it will be only a toy (data), not a tool (information.

      Book Description

This self-contained work is an up-to-date treatment of the basic theory of molecular gas dynamics and its various applications. Recent progress in the field has greatly enhanced the original theory and stimulated interesting and critical gas dynamic phenomena and problems. This book, unique in the literature, presents working knowledge, theory, techniques, and typical phenomena in rarefied gases for theoretical development and applications.

Basic theory is developed in a systematic way and presented in a form easily applied to practical use. After presenting basic theory and various simple flows, such as unidirectional or quasi-unidirectional flows and flows around a sphere, the author discusses additional topics, including flows induced by temperature fields, which are typical in rarefied gases; flows with evaporation and condensation; and bifurcation of flows in rarefied gases. The appendix contains many useful fundamental formulae, as well as an explanation of the theoretical background for the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method, easily accessible to nonmathematicians and not found elsewhere in the literature.

Existence of the ghost effect has made molecular gas dynamics indispensable to the study of a gas in the continuum limit, traditionally treated by classical fluid dynamics. In this book, the ghost and non-Navier–Stokes effects are demonstrated for typical examples—such as Bénard and Taylor–Couette problems—in the context of a new framework. An infinitesimal curvature effect is also discussed, with a long-standing problem of the bifurcation of the plane Couette flow worked out as an example.

Molecular Gas Dynamics is useful for those working in different communities where kinetic theory or fluid dynamics is important: graduate students, researchers, and practitioners in theoretical physics, applied mathematics, and various branches of engineering. The work may be used as a self-study reference or as a textbook in graduate-level courses on fluid dynamics, gas dynamics, kinetic theory, molecular or rarefied gas dynamics, microflows, and applied mathematics.

      Book Description

The first book on Modelica, a modeling language that can be used to simulate both continuous and discrete behavior, Introduction to Physical Modeling with Modelica provides the necessary background to develop Modelica models of almost any physical system. The author starts with basic differential equations from several engineering domains and describes how these equations can be used to create reusable component models. Next, he describes techniques for modeling complex non-linear behavior, exploiting the powerful array handling features and mixing continuous and discrete behavior. The second part of the book focuses on effective use of all the language features provided by the Modelica modeling language. This includes, among other things, discussions on maximizing the reusability of component models being developed, managing the model development process, and making models as computationally efficient as possible. Introduction to Physical Modeling with Modelica includes a companion CD-ROM with the Modelica source code for all examples as well as an evaluation copy of Dymola. Using Dymola, readers can immediately begin to explore the dynamics of the models included with the book or to develop their own models. Nearly 100 examples of mechanical, electrical, biological, chemical, thermal and hydraulic models are included. Introduction to Physical Modeling with Modelica will be of interest to all professional engineers and university researchers developing physical models. Students studying control system development or modeling of physical systems will also find it useful.

3 out of 5 stars Good introductory book.......2005-06-13

The book is well structured and have many interesting examples. The book is a good start point for anyone who wants to start learning Modelica. The price is in my opinion a little bit expensive since the book is based on Modelica 1.6 language specification and the latest spec is 2.2 with some relevant changes.

      5 out of 5 stars Hands-on experience with Modelica.......2001-12-11

One of the weakest points of the new object-oriented modelling language Modelica was the lack of an introduction to help engineers and scientists understand the differences to other modelling concepts. Using many examples from the automotive industry, electrical, mechanical and chemical engineering this book explains the concept of physical modelling, i. e. using basic laws to describe physical systems, and shows how to formulate these principles in Modelica. The Modelica language is presented in a series of examples that gradually grow more complex. The companion CD contains the complete source code of the examples and a working version of the commercial tool Dymola. The reader can thus start with the given examples and modify them to get some practise with the tool and the language.

The emphasis of the presentation is on the engineering task of building a model, for more theoretical questions references are given.

I like this book because of it's hands-on approach. It gives a comprehensive introduction to physical modeling and the new language Modelica and I can recommend it to engineers and scientists who have to create or use models of physical systems.
