Book Description
"The Windmill Pitcher is the most comprehensive book on fastpitch pitching that I have read. It is an excellent reference for both coaches and pitchers." -- Ernie Parker, world-renowned pitching coach "I now have a comprehensive reference book to offer the people who contact me about pitching. The chapter on increasing ball speed is outstanding. There was an incredible need for this book and I thank Barry for writing it." -- Sherry Werner, PhD, lead researcher, International Olympic Committee's Submission on Biomechanics and Physiology "One of the most comprehensive fastpitch instructional books on the market today. A must addition for any coach's library." -- Art Certosimo, DuPage County, Illinois Barry Simmons has been a pitcher in men's fastpitch softball leagues at all levels for 35 years. Also a student of art and design, Sammons used his knowledge to develop many of the illustrations used in the book. He is an attorney for the Milwaukee, Wisconsin firm of Quarles & Brady.
Customer Reviews:
The Best for Reference for Fastpitch Pitching.......2007-06-04
The Windmill Pitcher is a great book for any coach, player, and parent. I highly recommend this for parents of pitchers. It is well written with execptional illustrations of the correct mechanics for the windmall pitcher. I've been around the game all my life and seen many good pitchers. The great pitchers have solid mechanics. This is a must have for fastpitch softball.
Fastpitch Softball: The Windmill Pitcher.......2007-01-30
Illustrations are not clear enough for a beginner to understand. I pitched fastpitch for over 35 years and I had trouble understanding what was being taught.
Overall, I was not too impressed with the book. I probably won't use it as a reference for my pitching school.
Fast Pitch Softball: The Windmill Pitcher.......2005-12-17
Review: The Windmill Pitcher
In the book, The Windmill Pitcher, it talks about how to play softball, and different ways to pitch. This book has the best description of how to pitch, and also different ways to pitch. If pitchers and coaches have questions about coaching, or pitching they can refer to this book. It has many different ways and diagrams to show and describe pitching. It tells you what to do for ball control, and what you need to do to improve your pitching mechanics. There are many different ways to pitch in fast pitch softball, such as; Slingshot, Single Pump, and Double Pump. I would recommend this book to pitchers and coaches that LOVE softball.
Best material I've used.......2002-02-20
I have a collection of tapes from various people. It would seem that video would be the best medium for this kind of instruction. Maybe it's because I viewed and re-viewed the tapes so often, but I honestly got more detail out of this book than anything else I've used. The discussion of each piece of the mechanics along with drills I haven't seen on any tape was very, very helpful.
I would strongly recommend this book. It's straight-up, no hype instruction. Excellent for beginning or intermediate pitchers and/or coaches.
Excellent and Informative.......2001-12-20
I keep this book with me all the time during softball season ! I have been coaching for 9 years and and have learned quite a few things from this book. It's nice to be able to go back to it and review. It covers the windmill pitcher from A to Z. Very Very Good !

Diamonds, Pearls, Mirrors & Lace. Dis is the Place to Face Fear, Fall, Then F L Y !.......2005-12-22
Sidney's world of the novel was recommended to me by my nephew, Lonnie Joe Hudnall, an ex marine who was based in Seoul Korea, as a military policeman, later adding translator to his list of duties performed to precision without pomp. When Lonnie lived somewhere he lived there, with those people, melding himself into their ways of doing, thinking, and speaking, as much as he could do that and honor his military commitments.
When Lonnie recommended WINDMILLS OF THE GODS to me, which was my first dip into Sidney's mainstream novels, I was indeed curious, and not disappointed. Read that book twice, and then progressed to read all the other early books, though I'm happy to say I still have a couple of Sheldon's most recent novels on my To Read list. I knew that Sheldon was one of Lonnie's favorite authors, but I also knew that Lonnie's reasons for recommending Windmills to me went beyond sharing that appreciation. Of course, as I read, I was looking for why Lonnie felt I would enjoy this particular book. Did he see me as being similar to the woman who became an ambassador? If so, I was highly complimented. The most engrossing part of the book for me was the unlikely, yet cleaver and effective ways the home-spun heroine dealt with the awkward, demanding situations in this auspicious position.
The only compliment I've received from Lonnie which was higher, was his conclusion after reading several chapters of my nonfiction manuscript, MOLASSES MOON. "I was reading and reading and reading, and all of a sudden I realized it felt like I hadn't been reading, but that I had been thinking my own thoughts." If that isn't a compliment on syntax being smooth and natural, I don't know what is. Thanks, Lonnie, for many things, especially our fascinating discussions on, and mutual love of books and words.
Lonnie is also a writer, with at least one novel written into several chapters of a first draft, and a few tentative beginnings of a project of rewriting history in a uniquely intriguing slant and style. Maybe I'll be reviewing one of his books here one day. Maybe he'll be reviewing one of mine.
Writers. Gotta love em.
In this review, instead of writing only about WINDMILLS, which was the first novel of Sheldon's I read, I'd like to ramble a bit into the first novel he wrote, and tie the whole shebang into a literary knot.
In THE NAKED FACE, Sheldon gives Stephen King a run for his money, competing with his ability to unearth the gritty emotional core of homo sapiens. This was one of my favorite of Sheldon's mainstream novels; I've read most of those works, some more than once. The psychological depth of Sidney's characters, exposing inner visions of various disturbances, came out with amazing clarity and complexity in this novel. It appeared to me that Sidney understood the inside, underside, and upside of the human psyche, possibly in a more intuitive way than a practicing psychiatrist.
I read this novel in the late 80's, and I'm not good at recalling details, so I won't strain my brain to give a plot summary from a bad memory, which might mistakenly mix a few other novels into this one. What I do recall clearly, though, is that I was deeply impressed with this novel, so much so that I continued chewing on exactly what it was which awed me about this particular story. It had something to do with Sidney's grasp of psychosis and his ability to redeem it or to know when to render it to the fires of cremation. I knew I would come to a time to read the book again later, and come to a catharsis with that nagging feeling of more value to be had through a repeat read of THE NAKED FACE.
Maybe after that reread I could write a decent plot summary. In any case, I've rarely written any type of synopsis in my reviews, mostly because that's done perfectly by other reviewers. Instead, I do my thing, which is to try to help potential readers decide if a book is easy to get into, by detailing what captured and kept my interest, by determining what glued a book into my mind so I could live vicariously in it.
Some of the reviews of THE NAKED FACE mentioned that, as Sheldon's first novel, it was less than his others. I can see how they came to that conclusion. I can also understand how others described it as better than, and noted psychological complexity. Most said it was engrossing.
I wonder...
If Sheldon had written THE NAKED FACE (or published it) at the end of his career as a novelist instead of at the beginning, might that work be seen in a different light? Might it be viewed as a crowning achievement, shedding light (yeah, I'm going overboard, or maybe I have my head in the clouds) on every angle of his long and varied, creative career?
By the way, Sidney's long and varied career, is highlighted beautifully in THE OTHER SIDE OF ME, Sidney's memoirs released November 8, 2005.
That's another must get; must read, for those of us who love to labyrinth into worlds of fiction. Yet, this isn't fiction; it's Sidney's life, which appears to read better than some of the best novels. In fact it appears to be better than even Sidney's novels. And, that's saying something.
I read the first few chapters of these memoirs while browsing in a couple bookstores in Grand Junction, CO, HASTINGS and BARNES & NOBLE, on 12/12/05. Feeling similarly to a reviewer of that book, after reading a few chapters of Sidney's memoirs, I was tempted to temporarily halt a book I had been enjoying immensely, to continue reading THE OTHER SIDE OF ME. It wasn't easy to temporarily put aside Sidney's memoirs, and decide to wait and order it from Amazon (which I did on 12/17/05).
THE OTHER SIDE OF ME, as noted above, appears to be more riveting than any of Sidney's novels; it exposes beautifully the richness of Sheldon's personal history, and how he became the phenomenon he is.
Having read only the first 4 chapters, I received an "ah ha!" for the source of his kaleidoscope writing style. I began to see why many of his novels have the first 5 chapters begin from different parts of the world or from different life pursuits, each chapter initiating sets of characters who seem to have nothing to do with those in the other opening chapters.
In understanding how his life set up his style as a novelist, I also understand how THE OTHER SIDE OF ME explained its first chapter's event to Otto, Sidney's father, who ingeniously convinced 17 year old Sidney not to add the sleeping pills to the whiskey he had consumed in preparation for them. I believe that Sidney will gently and subtly weave the answer to the first riveting chapter into the remainder of the book, tying the themes of his childhood into the directions of his ultimate success, and the devastations of riding the psyche designed from those early chaotic years, boomeranging repeatedly from poverty to riches and back.
A review noted that these memoirs delve more into Sidney's show biz career than into his life as a novelist. It was helpful to know that, even though I was also hoping to learn more about Sheldon's background around his novels. Even so, I'll read between the delicious lines if possible, seeking silver threads exposing his reasons for featuring the vignettes he did. Those features will likely answer the main questions I would have about how Sidney's life drove his multi-fronted successes.
I wonder if Sidney's memoirs will go the way of his Midnight novels, and split into at least a duo if not a trilogy. I hate to be left in the position of, if I want more of a book I have to reread it. But, of course that's a better position than dropping a novel into the fire of the coal stove after having read it, to be sure no one else ever picks it up.
I did that once; I won't tell what book it was. It wasn't a novel I'll ever review here, since I've made a pact with myself to review only books good enough to rave with 5 stars, as I wish upon them for more. I feel somewhat guilty "coping out" like that, since that leaves the task to other reviewers to expose those books which might not be worth reading, or to expose the dull or drag parts in otherwise good reads. My problem isn't a matter only of being too sensitive to criticize publically; it's that every book has great value to certain readers at certain times. I don't feel qualified to know what's truly bad, or why. I'm still learning what's good and why.
Speaking of rereading to get more. A few years ago, my Mom and a friend and I were on the way to Santa Fe. I was driving my Mom's 67 Ford Galaxy; the friend was reading my sci fi ms, MORNING COMES. Reaching the -30- at the end of the last page, I believe it was page 400-something, the friend screeched, "Oh No!!" My stomach gathered into granite, "Did she just read something she hated? Did she hate the ending?"
I didn't have to ask.
"It CAN'T be over! I don't want this book to end!" She immediately flipped to the first page and began again, her scowl smoothing into a smile as she continued rereading and I continued driving southwest to visit Sunstone Press.
Returning to a True Master of That Game, I should note that I see differences between Sidney's early novels and his later ones, all great, just subtly different in feel. I won't get into detail on that; I merely wanted to state the opinion and run.
In closing, I'll mention that Sidney's Midnight novels stay in my mind as being the most engrossing and complexly satisfying reads in his collection.
Can't wait to get my hands on my personal copy of THE OTHER SIDE OF ME,
Linda Shelnutt
P.S. Also ordered the hardback of Nicholas Spark's TRUE BELIEVER. Looking forward to rereading in easy chair plush the installments I read riveted to the book shelves in my local Wal Mart during a series of grocery hops (see my review on TRUE BELIEVER and its companion review on Stephen King's MISERY).
Sheldon at His Best!.......2005-04-13
The newly appointed ambassador to Romania has her work cut our for her. Someone's out to get her, but WHO?? It's definitely a mysterious murder plot, and Sheldon does an excellent job of weaving the plot around the shiny knife of suspense. You never know quite what will happen next. There are always twists and turns in the plot. We empathize with well meaning Mary as she faces unseen assassins and the "treachery of men she trusts."
I listened to the audio version of this book, which was published in 1987. Lee Remick does a great job of reading. I look forward to reading Sheldon's "Rage of Angels" and "If Tomorrow Comes."
Death and diplomacy.......2004-12-10
During the Cold War, the President of the United States asks college professor and Mrs. Average America Mary Ashley to fill the very important post of Ambassador to Romania. She is flattered, but declines because her husband's job requires him to stay here. Faster than you can say "Conspiracy theory," the husband has a fatal accident and Mary is off to Bucharest, where the protocol is stifling, her office is bugged, and her assistant, smart aleck Mike Slade, just may be trying to kill her.
This story is a bit of a departure for Sidney Sheldon, who usually writes romantic thrillers about spunky, single young women. Mary Ashley is brave, but definitely from the Donna Reed School for Wives and she has two (perfect) kids, to boot. The character I liked best was the enigmatic master assassin, Angel, who has killed some of the world's most influential people, and now find Mary Ashley on his to-do list. The ever-smirking Mike Slade is a fun and likeable character. You'll learn a lot about diplomatic protocol in this tidy little political thriller.

I don't believe it.......2004-11-05
The first 50 pages of the book are thrilling, is a murder conspiracy and they made everything to complete their assignment, but when Mary decides to be the ambassador of Romania, the book get boring and boring unless you want to know how an ambassador must behave with everybody everywhere, when the book starts explaining this, you will get lost of the main story that has to many voids, of course as in these kind of books the end is a fairy tale and the epilog is made to keep the story open, sincerely I don't recommend this book, there are many spies books much better than this one.
excellent!.......2004-01-12
He has written a book that is so close to real life that it will scare the pants off you! The newly elected president decides he wants to develop a better relationship with countries of the old cold war, Romania especially. Instead of a trained person for the ambassador job, he picks a teacher from a Kansas school, who specializes in that area in her studies. He read an article she had written and since what she had written was also his views, he asks her to take the job. At first she declines because of her family and her husband's commitments to his patients (he is a doctor), but after he dies in a mysterious car accident, she decides to take the job.
There are many who don't like the idea of Romania and the U.S. getting buddy buddy and a secret group from around the world, including those in the U.S., work to sabotage the presidents efforts. They hire an assassin, who has never been defeated to take out several key people.
Mary Ashley, the ambassador, is turning out to be quite successful at her job, and is the target of an assassination. She doesn't know who to trust.
This is interesting all the way to the end and keeps you guessing. Enjoy!

Product Description
Wind Turbines addresses all those professionally involved in research, development, manufacture and operation of wind turbines. It provides a cross-disciplinary overview of modern wind turbine technology and an orientation in the associated technical, economic and environmental fields. It is based on the author's experience gained over decades designing wind energy converters with a major industrial manufacturer and, more recently, in technical consulting and in the planning of large wind park installations, with special attention to economics. The second edition accounts for the emerging concerns over increasing numbers of installed wind turbines. In particular, an important new chapter has been added which deals with offshore wind utilisation. All advanced chapters have been extensively revised and in some cases considerably extended

Tour De Force.......2007-01-06
I first heard of Hilda Van Stockum when I bought a used book by her, "Pegeen" for a mere quarter a few years ago -- oh my! What a find!!! Couldn't put the book down, started researching all of Mrs. Van Stockum's books, and read them as fast as I could find them. Bought several from amazon and ebay, and they are WONDERFUL. They're written for children, but utterly held the interest of this 51 year old reader. What a shame these books aren't still widely circulated and read by today's kids. If you read the reviews posted here, you'll get an idea of The Winged Watchman's story -- a riveting account, clearly truth-based, and perfectly told. All of the Van Stockum books have made me cry with their impact, yet they are told in an utterly natural way, no grandstanding. These are the kind of characters that stay with you, in the best sense, like Francie from "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" or the Moffats, or Scarlett O'Hara. They are unforgettable. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND The Winged Watchman and all of Hilda Van Stockum's books. And you should Google her! A fascinating and accomplished person, her life will impress and inspire you. Sorry to ramble on! Thanks.
This is a really good book.......2006-10-21
This book was about how a boy, who lived in holland during WW2 survived. He took part in helping the resistance by housing a pilot and acting as a distraction. He also helped to keep Holland from flooding when the electric pumps went out. I would recommend this book to others because it was veary enteraining.
A Must Read for Today's Children.......2006-04-25
I loved The winged Watchman when I was growing up and am pleased to see that it has been reissued for a whole new generation of readers. In my opinion, it should be required reading for all kids-- it depicts a family living under Nazi occupation and facing it with courage. The Vorhagen Family lives in the Netherlands, and as the occupation and the war proceeds, the family becomes more drawn into the resistance movement.
They shelter several refugees from the Nazis-- Trixie, a baby whose mother has been sent to a conentration camp, Charles, an airman who is hiding from the Nazi troops, Koba and Betsy, who take refuge with the Verhagens because they have nothing to eat in their own home, and Hildebrand, a student who wishes to study rather than fight. With frequent visits from Uncle Cor, who is active in the resistance, the family draws together, determined not to succumb to the brutality they see all around them.
This book serves as an excellent example to children of a family's bravery and of the importance of doing the right thing. It's a terrific book and is one that will touch your children's hearts as it is teaching them a valuable lesson.
The Winged Watchman.......2003-11-19
The Winged Watchman is a fictional story about a Dutch family, the Verhagens, who live in a mill in the middle of WWII. They include Mother, Father, Joris, and Dirk Jan. Throughout the process of the book there are many additions to the Verhagen family. They include Trixie (a little Jewish girl who's parents were taken away at the beginning of the war), Freya (an abused dog rescued by Joris), Charles (an English aviator), Uncle Cor (a member of the Underground Resistance Movement), Koba and Betsy (two young girls who came to stay with them because of lack of food at their own house), and Hildebrand (a young man who was interested in studying rather than working in the resistance). The Verhagen family eventually becomes very involved in the resistance movement. It is sad when Uncle Cor dies, but the book actually has a very happy theme to it. This book mixes adventure, history, and suspense, and it's okay for children. They do mention shooting and concentration camps, but they aren't graphically described. They don't happen at the same time. They are mentioned as something that happened somewhere else. This book is a perfect example of the spirit of teamwork.
An eye-opening book for me.......2002-09-19
There are not many classics in the category of war books, but this one is a masterfully written exception. It follows the experiences of the Verhagens, a small close-knit family living in a windmill named "The Winged Watchman" in the Holland countryside, through WWII. The story begins when Leendert Schenderhans, a boy on a neighboring farm, becomes a Nazi landwatcher, causing trouble for the patriotic Verhagens. Tension mounts as the Verhagens become more and more involved in the war, sheltering runaways, participating in crucial events, like undercover weapon droppings, and aiding their anti-Nazi Uncle Cor. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone desiring a different perspective of WWII than just the American side of the story.

Delightful story about a cat and her human family.......2007-04-15
This is a delightful story based upon real events of a cat and a baby that survive a flood in the Netherlands. The cat starts out leading the carefree single life, but changes in the human family at home forces a change in lifestyle as the cat moves from sleeping in a warm bed to sleeping in the windmill. During particularly stormy weather, a dike holding back sea water breaks and the whole town is flooded. The cat saves the life of the family's new baby, and later acquires the baby's cradle for a bed after the child grows older. The story is enjoyable for even mature readers.
Katje, the Windmill Cat.......2007-02-18
This story enchanted my children several years ago when we got it from the library. The fact that it's based on a true story made it even more interesting. The pictures give you an idea of pre-industrial Holland, and of course cat lovers like the personality of the cat and her heroic deed! I have tried to order it for a couple years and it was unavailable for one reason or another, so we are very happy to finally own the book.
Beautiful illustrations, but too scary for very young kids.......2006-10-04
This is a lovely book, but the story was too frightening for my 3 1/2 yr old. The story includes a baby and cat being washed away in a flood and rescued at the last minute. Maybe better for older kids.
A story with great appeal for children and cat lovers.......2002-05-28
Gretchen Woelfle's "Katje the Windmill Cat" will have great appeal for children and cat lovers alike. The true tale of a brave cat which ended up saving a baby during a 15th-century flood in southern Holland, "Katje the Windmill Cat" begins quietly enough with Katje and her owner, Nico, enjoying the solitude of windmill life together. They play together, eat together, and even cozy up together at night. Both are content.
Then Nico brings home a bride, and soon enough, there is a baby girl named Anneke. Although Katje feels a little pushed aside, she does her best to amuse and take care of the baby. Her efforts are not always appreciated by Lena, Nico's wife, but all is forgiven when, at the end, Katje saves the day and Anneke alike.
Nicola Bayley's superb, softly colored illustrations greatly enhance the text. Pictures of the cat and her family subtly boost the story, as do the utterly charming Delft tile squares on each page--some depicting cats, some windmills, some dikes, and so on. This is a lovely story for almost any age, and the illustrations bring fresh visual rewards with each viewing (try finding the mice scattered throughout!).
Beatifully written and illustrated.......2002-01-17
Since my parents are from Holland, I was thrilled to find a book that relates to my heritage. The book is beautiful, filled with moving illustrations, adorned with little Delft blue tiles. My son (age 4) loves the story, and we always hold our breath as the little cat saves the baby's life. That it is based on a Dutch legend only adds more to the story. And there is a gentle thread of humor woven through the story, as well.

Book Description
A self-proclaimed knight
Señor Quexada has read so many books about knights in shining armor that he thinks he is one. He gives himself a name more fitting for a knight -- Don Quixote -- and sets off one evening with his squire. At dawn they come across what Don Quixote recognizes as an army of monstrous giants. "Master!" cries Sancho Panza. "They are only windmills!" But Don Quixote knows what he has to do . . .
Don Quixote is the creation of the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Eric A. Kimmel skillfully and cleverly crystallizes the character, and with his powerful line and
vibrant color Leonard Everett Fisher completes the funny, loving portrait.

Don Quixote and the Windmills
These books were in great condition and came in a pretty fast time. I was very pleased with the service.
I really love the pictures and the story. I think it gives children a little taste of who Don Quixote was.
Brief Review.......2007-01-10
Bought this as a present for a knight-loving child who loves the book, the drawings are very well done and are very interesting to look at...
A CLASSIC TALE BROUGHT TO VIVID LIFE.......2004-04-22
A much sought after illustrator and writer Leonard Everett Fisher gives vivid life to this classic tale. The producer of over 200 children's books, his bold full-color pictures are unforgettable images of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza.
This hallmark of Spanish literature by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was written in 1605 and published to great acclaim. Obviously, it has endured for centuries and will for centuries to come.
As most know, it is a tale of a rather ordinary fellow who has immersed himself in so much literature about knighthood that he believes he can be a knight. The story has become a much heralded Broadway musical, and the stuff of which dreams are made.
Sancho Panza, a neighboring farmer, is the rotund companion chosen by Don Quixote. He, too, has become very much a part of our culture as a faithful follower.
Kimmel, speaking for Don Quixote closes this version of his story with "Our names and the stories of our matchless deeds will resound through the ages." And they have.

Journey to Jo'burg: A South African Story

Book Description
We are the young people,
We will not be broken!
We demand freedom
And say
"Away with slavery
In our land of Africa!"
For almost fifty years apartheid forced the young people of South Africa to live apart as Blacks, Whites, Indians, and "Coloreds." This unique and dramatic collection of stories -- by native South African and Carnegie Medalist Beverley Naidoo -- is about young people's choices in a beautiful country made ugly by injustice.
Each story is set in a different decade during the last half of the twentieth century and into the twenty-first, and features fictional characters caught up in very real events. Included is a Timeline Across Apartheid, which recounts some of the restrictive laws passed during this era, the events leading up to South Africa's first free democratic elections, and the establishment of a new "rainbow government" that leads the country today.
