Book Description
The blockbuster #1 national bestselling phenomenon is back... not that it ever really went away. An easily-read story which quickly demonstrates three very practical management techniques, it also includes information on several studies in medicine and in the behavioral sciences, which help readers understand why these apparently simple methods work so well with so many people. The book is brief, the language is simple, and best of all...it works.
Customer Reviews:
A little disappointing .......2007-10-02
Yes, the 1 minute manager method is nice, and it can really work in certain conditions. But the books is too pretentious and the authors wrap the idea in way too many pages, just to fill a book.
This kind of book should have half as many pages and sell for half as much.
Insightful approach but too vague.......2007-08-29
On one hand I really like the way this book gets right to the point without consuming lots of time. Too many books with a similar mission would spend 400 pages, but this one can be read in an hour.
The brevity is a double-edged blade though, because the book falls short of fully explaining its concepts. It really touches on only three main approaches to management, but it does not provide anything in the way of examples or contingencies in case real life does not match the story.
I am glad I read it but it is hard to say the book is worth the money. You really do not get much content for the price. Upon finishing the book, you'll soon realize the need to buy more books from these authors to flesh out how to implement their suggestions.
Practical, cute, and easy to read.......2007-08-05
This is a great little introduction to personnel management. Though slightly misnamed, the book introduces three skills of management which can be done in a concise way (but probably not quite 60 seconds). Managers should cast clear vision and expectations, commend good work, and correct mistakes. That's it.
The reason the book is so good is that so many managers can't or won't do those three simple things. The ability to confront employees in a non-combative way is too abrasive for sensitive people-people, and too limited for true autocrats. Praise is simple and obvious enough, but many managers think they've done it when they haven't. And precise goal-setting is sometimes beyond business leaders who do not have sharp mental editing skills. When you're finished with the book, you haven't heard anything you didn't already know, you've only been reminded of how important it is to do these things. Like diet and exercise, most of us know what's best for us regardless of whether or not we do it. Additionally, and this is a subtle point, the manager has to express how he or she feels about an employee's performance, and accurate expression of feeling is sometimes beyond the emotional range of some really driven leaders.
It's a top notch, brief read. Everyone in leadership ought to read it, even if they walk away with nothing new. The only thing I'd correct is some mediocre narrative, as the whole book is written as a fictional set of interviews by a young manager-to-be of his idiolized One Minute Manager, running a company. But no one's reading this book because they meant to pick up a good novel, so writing style is a minor issue. That aside, it's worth the content.
Yesterday excelent, today just good.......2007-08-03
What can I say about this book? - If you haven't heared anything about it, you must read it, but don't expect too much. It's a well-known stuff, covered by a lot of modern management books and authors, but I wanted in my collection, so ....
yeah right.......2007-07-23
This book is too simple to be really effective. So what if you are a tough or nice manager? This book is basically trying to find a balance, and that's nothing new. And it tell you to evaluate your performance with your goals, thanks for the insight, wow, I've learned so much. Save your money and time. If you must, check it out at the library.

Chapter 1.......2007-09-26
I don't know if this book will be any help to you but it was NOT to me...
My wife only read the 1st chapter, "I HATE YOU..." and then she stopped...
I think she found her answer :)
Great Insightful Book.......2007-08-29
This book was received in the requested time frame. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to get this book, read it, review it and tell others what I discovered.
A Must Read.......2007-08-28
I wish I had known about this book years ago. Knowing how to put up boundaries with a BPD is very valuable. It is right on target.
I Hate you, Don't Leave Me.......2007-06-10
When I first read this book, I had to stop after each chapter..sometimes after each paragraph to cry. At last, there were people who understood and felt what I had been going through my whole life. It was such a relief. The only down side is that the book is a bit dated.
After a few weeks, I got up the courage to show the book to my husband and suggest that he read it. After all, I'm the one with BPD. When I showed him the book, he said, "Oh, our marriage therapist gave me this book to help me understand you better." My only regret is that I didn't learn about this book sooner.
Borderline Personality Disorder.......2007-06-06
This book is a good introduction to BPD for the lay person. It is not the final word for a clinical professional. Should be read with the understanding that there are gradations of BPD, as exists among all mental illnesses.

Short and Sweet..........2007-09-15
I work as a hospitalist in a busy community hospital. I use a commercial software product as a quick reference for other meds, but still stick with this classic reference for antibiotics and sensitivities. Small and lightweight, it doesn't take up much room in your pocket. Med students and residents in particular shouldn't leave home without it!
five stars.......2007-09-04
i have relied on this guide for good sense prescribing for common and uncommon infectious conditions for years; i'm almost lost without it
The Sandford CD did not work.......2007-08-23
I have been using the Sandford Guide for years. This time I decided to order the CD to download on my PDA. Vane illusion. I couldn't. I tried the technical support. After about one hour on the phone, they could not either. So I asked the technician to please transfer me to a customer service's representative to order the book and return the CD but he coulnd't because the technical support is given by an independent company! End result: I cannot return the CD to Amazon, the Sandford Guide people are unreachable. I felt cheated by this clever system. I accepted that I lost my money and had no choice but buy another book.
Antimicrobial Therapy.......2007-08-05
Have relied on this annual review for over 25 years. Nothing else comes close to being as reliable, current, thorough and useful.
Very good book.......2007-07-30
I bought this book upon starting my residency and i have to say that i found it to be very useful. It covers all the infectious diseases, even those we might never see in our practice. the best part tough is that it includes empiric treatment guidelines, 2nd 3rd or even 4th line antimicrobial agents for every infection. This way it can solve the problem with patients being allergic to specific antibiotics, that many times are the mainstay in treating infectious diseases. I think this book can't serve its purpose any better than it does

Customer Reviews:
very good text.......2005-10-18
This text is very detailed and loaded with examples. It is very easy to read.
Practical discussion on a complex organization.......2000-10-07
The book provides practical concepts for healthcare administrators. The extensive use of charts, tables and diagrams has been very helpful in presenting complex concept. Even though many of the concepts presented are not new, the practical examples cited helps to bring out present application of the concept.
While the book has been written in the US setting, I find it applicable to my work in Thailand. I intend to use the book for the administration residency program which we are conducting at our group of hospitals.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Aimed at nothing less than totally restructuring the diets of Americans, Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy may well accomplish its goal. Dr. Walter C. Willett gets off to a roaring start by totally dismantling one of the largest icons in health today: the USDA Food Pyramid that we all learn in elementary school. He blames many of the pyramid's recommendations--6 to 11 servings of carbohydrates, all fats used sparingly--for much of the current wave of obesity. At first this may read differently than any diet book, but Willett also makes a crucial, rarely mentioned point about this icon: "The thing to keep in mind about the USDA Pyramid is that it comes from the Department of Agriculture, the agency responsible for promoting American agriculture, not from the agencies established to monitor and protect our health." It's no wonder that dairy products and American-grown grains such as wheat and corn figure so prominently in the USDA's recommendations.
Willett's own simple pyramid has several benefits over the traditional format. His information is up-to-date, and you won't find recommendations that come from special-interest groups. His ideas are nothing radical--if we eat more vegetables and complex carbohydrates (no, potatoes are not complex), emphasize healthy fats, and enjoy small amounts of a tremendous variety of food, we will be healthier. You'll find some surprises as well, such as doubts about the overall benefits of soy (unless you're willing to eat a pound and a half of tofu a day), and that nuts, with their "good" fat content, are a terrific snack. Relying on research rather than anecdotes, this is a solidly written nutritional guide that will show you the real story behind how food is digested, from the glycemic index for carbs to the wisdom of adding a multivitamin to your diet. Willett combines research with matter-of-fact language and a no-nonsense tone that turns academic studies into easily understandable suggestions for living. --Jill Lightner

Customer Reviews:
Best guide to healthy eating.......2007-09-16
Willett's book isn't a fad diet book, but explains food and what it does for your body. I thought this book was very informative. It set some diet myths straight. There was a good overview of the food groups, the pros and cons of each, and what diseases or illnesses they helped or hurt. I thought the vitamin section was very good and surprisingly brief for that sort of thing.
Good common sense advice on nutrition.......2007-08-13
I have been saying almsot nothing but good about this book to my friends and family for the last week or two. I read this book once and then had to read it again because it is packed with such good common sense advice which is backed up with explinations about major studies confirming the advice.
Willet starts out with nothing less then suggesting major changes to the food guide pyrimid. The next chapters delve into the reasons for these changes. He explains in more depth about the importance of maintaining a healthy weight, choosing carbs low on the glycemic index, the need for unsaturated fats in the diet, the importance of eating low fat protiens, and the need to eat many fruits and vegtables (not potatoes)daily. Much of the book seems to agree with the mediterranean diet and He refers a few times to the "seven countries study" done by Ancel Keys who was an early proponent of this diet. I was curious to see how the diet worked for Keys and found he lived to be 100 years old!
The book is a treasure and I will refer to it often in the future. One note, some of the recepies and ingredients in the back are difficult to prepare or hard to come by. But don't let this stop you from reading this book and making changes to your diet. It has inspired me to make changes to mine.
Authoritative advice without any gimmicks.......2007-08-05
There's no shortage of "diet" books out there, so how do you choose the right one? The truth is, it's difficult. I've come to the conclusion that almost any diet can "work" (at least in the short term), because what they do is force you to think about what you're eating and motivate you to exercise. However, where gimmick diets fail is in changing your lifestyle.
This book is an entirely different breed of "diet" books, because it's not really a diet book at all. What it is is conservative, non-controversial, and authoritative advice regarding healthy eating. Nothing in this book is going to go out of style any time soon.
There's no gimmick here; it's not going to tell you that you can eat sausage all day and be healthy. It's going to tell you what you already know; eat more greens, veggies, fish, fruit, and whole grains. It's going to tell you that there's no secret to losing wait; eat fewer calories and exercise more. It's going to tell you that the knowledge of the glycemic index/load is useful for controlling your appetite by moderating blood sugar. It's going to explain that there's a big difference between good fats and bad. It's going to tell you that the Mediterranean-style diet is well known for being one of the healthiest in the world (and why).
I've actually read a couple dozen books on healthy eating. All of the others had a few good things to say, but had some sort of gimmick to sell the book. This book is more or less the intersection of all those other books. In the end, this is the best of the bunch and absolutely the one to get if you only want to read one book on healthy eating.
However, this book may not be for everyone. Some people may be put off by the conservative nature of this book. If you have special health concerns that aren't addressed by mainstream knowledge, or if you are the type of person that prefers to live on the bleeding edge, you may need to look elsewhere.
A great way to understand your health.......2007-07-09
I very much enjoyed this book. I have spent my entire life on a diet but never understood the meaning behind diet rules and theories. This was a great read on nutrition and really helped me to understand the medical implications of the food choices we make. The author did a great job simplifying complex medical terms and provided a balanced thoughtful view on eating, drinking and being healthy.
great advice.......2007-06-25
very good guidelines and recipes are delicious. no FDA-approved diet pill is ever going to change our increasing waistlines, and no one will ever make it easy for us. the food industry is absolutely disgusting in US, from high fructose corn syrup to fake sweeteners. well, at least lets all be thankful we have enough food to keep us fat, but we also have the option of not following the herd like sheep, and actually make out own choices regarding what we eat.

Customer Reviews:
Med surg text.......2007-09-13
This book is unnecessarily wordy. It uses a lot of abbreviations and I found myself having to stop often to look up words and abbreviations in my Tabers.
Still using it!!.......2007-08-16
This med-surg book is still being used to this very day. it allows me to go back and re-read what i may have missed in nursing school. Its a good reference book
Repetitive and confusing.......2007-07-07
Out of the many textbooks I have had to utilize in the past few years this is my least favorite. I find that the material is quite repetitive. Yet, not in the way that causes the information to stick. It is repetitive in a very confusing way. Rather than the material supporting itself I find it often contradictory. I think this book would be better served to teach in a more condensed, clear manner.
The "Mother Of All Med-Surg Texbooks"....?.......2007-06-08
Too many students make it through nursing school by studying "class lecture notes". Fine, you can pass the "tests" and graduate. But, the real world awaits, and if you have a minimal background in pathophysiology, or squeaked your way through nursing school (by studying notes) you're gonna be in for a rude awakening... Well, I read my "Iggy" textbook. This text is great. Made the tests seem pretty easy, and helped me in clinical! It helped me build a strong foundation in understanding of disease and the related nursing interventions. Love the book. I feel more prepared thanks to this book.
Thank you.......2007-02-24
Thank you for shipping these books to me right away; it really helps when I am able to get my books on time so i am not behind in my classes [=

Customer Reviews:
Great service!.......2007-09-02
My book came in great condition and there were no hassles or complications. It was my first time ordering through amazon and I found the website easy to navigate and understand.
Great textbook and a useful reference........2007-05-14
I needed this book for a class and I usually trade them in or sell them at the end of the semester. I'm going to keep this one and add it to my personal library.
The chapters can be long, but they are all filled with good information and very useful examples. Most of my Professor's lectures were taken directly from the contents of this book. The book also references well and lesser known Psychology work to bring you important information from the field.
I probably could have gotten a good grade without going to class every week and just studying this book. As it is, I'm sure I owe a lot to the A I got in Social Psychology to this book.
social psychology.......2007-01-18
I needed this book for school, it was priced way below the cost the schools were asking for. The book arrived prior to the date indicated, which was great. I had the book a week prior to my class starting. I love this site for school books.
Eh, for Social Psych, I guess it is good.......2006-12-13
This book is way too long for the info it teaches. I took social psych as an elective so that I could have it on my transcript for grad school as suggested by my advisor. However, this book could have been about half as long and gotten the point across. It exhausts every single topic to the max and is basically a waste of time to read the entire thing.
I am a textbook reader for my classes. But, I found myself just reading the terminology and skimming quickly through the rest of this book. I think the authors would do themselves justice to accept that introductory social psychology does not need this much explaining.
I guess I would recommend this book to people who are unfamiliar with introductory psych. But, if you are familiar with psych, get ready for a luke warm ride.
Good read.......2006-05-02
This is one of the better textbooks that I have been assigned to read. Throughout my introductory 101 Social Psychology class I've read pretty much the whole book. The examples were interesting, and I enjoyed how many of the concepts introduced at the beginning of each chapter correlated with something that had happened not too long ago in the real world. The illustrations facilate a better understanding of the theory or subject matter. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to gain a better understanding of social psychology.

Customer Reviews:
A Crappy Textbook.......2007-09-21
My MBA professor said this was an excellent book, but it was HORRIBLE. Well, at the least the first four chapters were extremely, extremely bad. I could barely finish them--if the professor hadn't been excellent, and gone "outside the book" most of the time, it would have been the worst class I've every taken. After the first four chapters, the book became tolerable, and even somewhat enjoyable (for the technically oriented), but nothing makes up for the first four chapters. What the other negative reviews say is very true.
Very satisfied.......2007-07-03
The book was brand new and I recieved the order on the day promised. Price beat all other sources I checked.
Received the item promptly and it was in good shape.......2007-01-18
Shipper got to me right away. The book was correct.
A forum for the authors' self-aggrandizement.......2006-11-30
Expensive and full of fluff. The authors simply love citing their own work. They do so at LEAST twice per chapter. All the cases in the book were written by the authors and the cases themselves are riddled with meaningless buzzwords and are just downright lame (e.g. "a lights-out data center"). Small wonder why the non-English speaking reviewer had problems. Poor guy.
It's obvious that the only opinions the authors value is their own. Beware of any class that requires this textbook because it means the professor has no idea what they are talking about. Just because you teach at Harvard does not necessarily mean you are smart or intelligent.
Approximately 7 of 10 chapter induce eye gouging............2006-07-29
This book only gets 2 stars from me because 3 or so chapters are actaully worthy of reading. The remainder compells the reader to gouge out their own eyeballs to avoid reading another sentence of the poorly written chapters. You'd think with having 3 authors they could do better than this but alas...no. Most likely you don't have a choice of whether or not to read this book however I am a better man for not having to read this book again. I'll be getting my MBA in 8 days and look forward to NOT reading books like this for the rest of my natural life. Best of luck, you'll need it.

Customer Reviews:
Updated and comprehensive bible for tumor pathology.......2007-09-15
I was a little hesitant spending $400 of my $500 book fund allowed per year on this updated version of Fletcher. I have been using the departmental copy of the previous edition of this book so far and I can only say that this has been the best and most concise reference book for tumor pathology. If you are looking to buy just a single book to get by in pathology, this is not the best choice... just go for Silverberg or Rosai. I am impressed at how updated this new edition is. This will save me a lot of time going to read journal articles for updated classification schema and new variants of tumors etc. All in all, a great book to buy for a PGY-4 pathology resident and of course, for practicing pathologists. That apart, the page design and layout within is very rich and colorful..plus..it looks great on my home bookshelf getting a furtive glance from every visitor at home..What more can you ask?
Beautiful text.......2007-07-31
This is a beautiful new (third) edition of this text, and improvements abound from its predecessor (which I also liked). The images are better in many chapters. The tables are well organized. As a general pathologist, I've found myself using this general text more and more. I can often get as much information as I need without turning to a subspecialty text. Very nice job.
