Book Description
The eleventh edition of Principles of Anatomy and Physiology marks a new milestone in the publication of the phenomenally successful Principles of Anatomy and Physiology. Bryan Derrickson of Valencia Community College in Orlando, Florida joins Jerry Tortora as a co-author, bringing his background and expertise in physiology in balance with Jerry's focus on anatomy. The authors have maintained in the text the superb balance between structure and function and continue to emphasize the correlations between normal physiology and pathophysiology, normal anatomy and pathology, and homeostasis and homeostatic imbalances. The acclaimed illustration program is now even better thanks to the input of hundreds of professors and students and the re-development of many of the figures depicting the toughest topics for students to grasp. The eleventh edition now fully integrates this exceptional text with a host of innovative electronic media, setting the standard once again for a rewarding and successful classroom experience for both students and instructors.
Customer Reviews:
Easy book .......2007-10-05
I love this book. It goes an extra mile into helping students understand the concept of human anatomy. I will keep it for future references.
Great text for the beginning of your medical course.......2007-02-24
This text really is a fantastic resource for someone beginning studies in medicine or medicine-related fields. Clear, precise illustrations, with the right amount of detail for the first year of a course, enable quick learning of the basic principles of structure and function. It is also written very well, set out sensibly, and provides clinical correlations to remind the student how the principles they are learning relate to clinical situations. Highly recommended.
Principles of Anatomy and Physiology.......2007-01-21
I ordered this book for my schooling. This book is excellent! It is packed full of information. I use it often.
Excellent Book.......2006-08-24
this book is awsome it has everything cover for every body system.., its very well explained, has great pictures, great diagrams, great color for diferent parts of the book, divisions, quizes, questions ... its a super book mainly for understanding simple concepts that in other books are very bad explained or with a lot of text.. This book explains the important stuff not with a lot of details as other books you will understand quickly.... Excellent for medschool, i use it for a first reading on the subject and then after understandig the subject and having an idea of it. I read other physiology book and add stuff that didn't mentioned to my notes.
Trust me buy it and you will love it... also has extra information thats is usefull in ABP classes...
Best Anatomy and Physiology Textbook.......2006-06-16
I used the third edition of this textbook when I was enrolled in Anatomy and Physiology I and II in college twenty three years ago. It is still used by the college I attended. The present edition (11th edition) which I purchased is the number one Anatomy and Physiology textbook. It explains every anatomical term and concept very well. The artwork is fabulous in showing the Anatomy and different Physiological processes. It is the best Anatomy and Physiology textbook for a two semester Anatomy and Physiology course.

Tortora is a god.......2004-12-17
I love this book with all my body including my pee pee.
As a med student, you spend a lot of time in your chum hole with your pirate crew. During this time you surf the net, watch cool videos and gorge. But when its close to PBL time your like "WTF!" and need to write some stuff down.
What do you reach for?!
Kumar and Clarke? Only if you want rabies
The answer to all your prayers is Tortora!
It has all the information you would ever want to know about medicine such as how chest movement is similar to bucket handle movement.
Tortora is THE greatest person on this earth EVER! There was this one time when he was in a cafe and this dude dropped a spoon and he totally flipped out and killed the whole village.
Im in the process of finding a victim so i can have children and call them Tortora in his honour. When i go to bed at night i pray to him and when i wake up aroused i am already thinking of him.
Buy this book or i will commit reverse seppuka
Principles of Human Anatomy.......2004-05-26
I only wish my teacher had chosen another book. Many times the author goes on rambling on and on where a body part is located from each other and only confuses the reader and never mentions the function of the body part or with only a simple explanation. Like for example: The greater wings of the sphenoid project laterally from the body, forming the anterolateral floor of the cranium. The greater wings also form part of the lateral wall of the skull just anterior to the temporal bone. The lesser wings, which are smaller than the greater wings, form a ridge of bone anterior and superior to the greater wings. They form part of the floor of the cranium and the posterior part of the orbit. And it ends with that. OK, so what I say! Who cares where the part is located, I can see that for myself in the picture; I want to know something relevant with the part. Also, it is very rare when the pictures is on the same page as the body part; you have to keep flipping the pages back and forth to follow the author's description. I just finished his axial skeleton section and my comment is: it is going to be torture reading the author's dry and immaterial way of writing. The author writes as if he is hiding something from you and you have to dig around to get the information. This is the 9th edition and renew every 3 years when there hasn't been a new anatomical part discovered in decades; ploy to keep the money bag flowing. I only hope that in the 10th or perhaps, the 15th edition the author will let us in on what he is trying to convey. Maybe by then Tortora can get it right.
Useful & Thorough Anatomy Text.......2002-12-05
I've found this textbook a useful self-study guide. It is set up logically by body system with accessible pronunciations and definitions and with each chapter building on the next. The illustrations are detailed, informative and easy to follow. Each chapter also contains practical information relating to today's medical practices as it pertains to each body system. I was not as impressed with the companion "A Photographic Atlas of the Human Body" as I prefer illustrations over cadaver photos.
Very goog Human Anatomy.......2001-12-26
This is a nice Human Anatomy Book. The Structure of the book based on Systems in human body rather than zones.I believe this gives a better overall view of the human body. Much better than that author gives explanation of every name first its pronounciation and than its meaning in original language.Pictures are mostly schematic, very few photographs of cut bodies, some scanning electron pictures were very nice.Together with this book I recommend Organ and Tissue book with scanning electron pictures. I also liked the littel windows called "clinical Application; that brings you into real world. Overall I liked it very much, it is more than just parts of body. It is with information and applications.

Great introduction to Applied Kinesiology.......2003-04-12
Robert Frost's AK manual is lean and to the point. It gives the history of AK, how AK is used in Europe and the USA, theory into the mechanisms of the reflexes used in AK, basic therapeutic procedures with explainations, and clear diagrams of the basic muscle tests and the appropriate reflexes. A perfect complement to the 100 hour course. I recommend this book to any student or practioner in health care who is looking to expand their skill set.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent book.......2006-03-14
The book is well organised, the explanations are clear and some issues are treated better than in Guyton, such as the case of the kidney physiology, in my opinion.
Beware that not all of the versions of the fith edition offer student consult access, so if you are going to buy one better make sure that yours does - it is a great resource.

From reviews of previous editions: "This remains...the best book to buy on the subject of exercise testing...an excellent book aimed at general physicians and cardiologists...recommended with enthusiasm."--International Journal of Cardiology "This book is to be recommended to all physicians who use exercise testing as a diagnostic or rehabilitation procedure..."--Cardiology in Practice "This is an excellent and detailed text describing the principles and practice of stress testing...I highly recommend this book for anyone involved in non-invasive cardiology."--The Journal of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Technology "The author's style is to be lauded...(He) states clearly the absolute, relative, and contraindications to stress testing...highly recommended."--Arch Phys Med Rehabil "I highly recommend this text as a well-written, integrated collection on current research, pathophysiology, and clinical applications."--Physical Therapy Although the general format of Stress Testing has not been changed in the Fifth Edition, the chapters have been thoroughly revised and updated. "Take Home" messages are sprinkled throughout the book to emphasize major concepts. The chapter on electrocardiographic changes has been completely re-organized to highlight the importance of unconventional markers of ischemia. Two new chapters cover the role of exercise echocardiography and exercise testing in congestive heart failure. Overall, Stress Testing, Fifth Edition, remains an essential resource for cardiologists and exercise physiologists.

Physical Dimensions Of Aging
ASIN: 0195167392 |
Book Description
Robert Arking's Biology of Aging, 3rd edition, is an introductory text to the biology of aging which gives advanced undergraduate and graduate students a thorough review of the entire field. His prior two editions have also served admirably as a reference text for clinicians and scientists. This new edition captures the extraordinary recent advances in our knowledge of the ultimate and proximal mechanisms underlying the phenomenon of aging. As a result, six important conceptual changes are included here: DT Clarified distinctions between the biological mechanisms involved in longevity determination and those involved in senescent processes. DT A new conceptual framework around which we can organize all the new facts about aging. This will assist readers to make sense of the information and use the data to form their own ideas. DT Increased knowledge of aging cells has lead to new ideas on how a cell transits from a healthy state to a senescent state, while still allowing for high levels of intra- and inter-specific variability. DT Discussion of senescent mechanisms assists the reader to understand that aging is a non-programmatic loss of function, likely arising from the loss of regulatory signals, and so is modifiable in the laboratory. DT Because the standard evolutionary story does not fully explain the evolution of social organisms, this edition also includes recent work dealing with intergenerational resource transfers. DT Lastly, if aging mechanisms are plastic, then the demand to move these anti-aging interventions into the human arena will inevitably grow. A discussion of the biological and ethical arguments on both sides of the question frames the question in an appropriate manner. The mass of data related to aging is summarized into fifteen focused chapters, each dealing with some particular aspect of the problem. The last two chapters integrate all this material into a coherent view of how the relevant biological processes change over the life span. This view is expressed in two non-technical figures (you might say that the whole book exists to fully support Figs 9-4 and 14-9), whose meanings are elucidated as the reader progresses through the book.

Biology of Aging: Observations & Principles.......2006-03-09
It was exactly the edition I needed for my Biology of Aging course. It was delievered on time by Amazon
WOW!.......2002-10-18
I got this book because I used to do work on the author's lab and I was amazed by the work they were pursuing there.
I have read other bio textbooks, but what strikes me most about this one is that if you really just want to read one, this one has got it all. It is a complete survey, of all that is known and being studied currently on the topic of aging. From how to study aging to the goals of society in aging to everything inbetween. From the stuff that works, to might works, to absolutely does not, this is an excellent overview of the field.

Book Description
Principles of Human Anatomy, 10e once again sets the standard for a rewarding and successful classroom experience for both instructors and students. The highly praised illustration program is enhanced with numerous newly drawn figures, micrographs, and photographs. All-new system overview inserts, which highlight the multitude of imaging techniques used to view and understand human structure, provide an even stronger visual impact. The succinctly written narrative is perfectly keyed to the many illustrations and continues to be supported by a host of carefully crafted pedagogical aids. Responding to feedback from students and instructors, the author has carefully reorganized the content to provide a better continuity of concepts throughout the text.
Customer Reviews:
Ok but professor hates it.......2006-02-13
This text was a required for a anatomy class as a prereq for the nursing program. The professor that teaches the class who has done so for 30 years really hates this textbook. He disagrees with most of what is in it, however he has to have it for the class. I myself find it a bit over the top on some of its explanations, I feel as a firstimer in the course it should be more to the basics not adding physio in it when we have to take that later.
thanks

Owners' Manual for the Human Body.......2007-01-06
My anatomy teacher told us that a very high percentage of students that use this book fail the class. I don't know where he got this information, and after getting to know him, he might have been saying that to scare us into studying more. The material is very in depth, but it is also very clear. Personally, I really liked this textbook and the class - so much in fact that I sold the second-hand copy I used in class and bought a brand new one on Amazon for my personal library. It came with a CD that was very helpful, and also with a year of free access to an online site with excellent quizes and photographs. (At least it did when I bought mine) I have had occassion to refer back to it since I took the class some years ago, and expect to refer to it in the future as well.
Hard work!.......2006-01-17
Oh man! I studied countless hours with this book. It beats around the bush, gives an incredable amount of definitions and makes it boring! The pictures did not help at all, all I did was ready over and over and over and over again. There is a lot of understanding in anatomy and this book did not help at all. I would suggest taking anatomy at a community college where this book is not used
worth the money.......2005-09-29
well I read other reviews regarding this book, many were not very helpful
Strenths- This book does a great job with muscular artistry, some of the details are comparable to netters atlas in visual details, not identification of mustles. The histo and physio are pretty decent, I also use histolgy by gartner and hyatt and BRS physio along with Gyuton for reference, althought not as detailed as those books, it does a great job for a quick into to medical physio.
Weakness- if your a medical student, ligament descriptions are almost non existant dispite muscular details, maybe not that important for undergrad anatomy. Also, mustle diagrams not on same page as functional details, I heard this was corrected in 11th edition, finally the neuro section is poor, lacks diagrams, however, this book is not advertizing itself as a neuro book so thats not unexpected, netters neuro atlas is great, overall worth the money.
gooses review.......2005-09-03
Reading this book is like reading a dictionary. It should read more like an encyclopedia. That would make it more interesting. This book is basically one definition after the next. Ive had books that give you a word and then tell you why its important and how to identify it those are much better. When you open the book up and look through it it appears similar to an eeencyclopedia because of all the pictures but that is far from the truth. Now to be fair anatomy by defonition is just listing definitions but the book could have done a better job describing where everything is in relation to other structures in the body. Also more importantly the title says anatomy and physiology and by definition physiology means the function and processes of living organisms which this book did a poor job of doing with the dictionary format it uses.
I thought the book was great!.......2005-08-02
I recieved my order very quickly! Thank you. It is a beautiful book. It is very useful for my classes. It has a few 'extras' with it, that also help with the study process.
thank you

Anatomy & Physiology Study Guide.......2007-09-19
Excellent resource for a very hard subject. Written well. It really helps you to be prepared for exams. If you are a serious student you don't want to miss this study guide. Buy it used and save!
Lots of typos!.......2007-08-28
There are a few comments I have...first, I find the workbook very helpful in understanding each chapter of the text. I use it every week and it helped me get an A in Anatomy I. If you read the text then do all the related pages in the workbook, your grade will show it. Trust me. That said, the book is riddled with errors and typos to be on the lookout for. The nerve chapters were the worst. It seemed as if the further the proofreader got into the book, the worse the errors became. Wrong answers can be found in places and some answers are given vs. a fill-choice, for example. It's odd, I know. It's not too much to expect near perfection in this type of item, I think, given the subject matter. Still, I think it is a valuable addition to the text. I would give it 5 stars but all the typos are too much to overlook. I should note that I don't think Tortora is the author, I think it is another person who is listed on the bottom of the cover, but this is based on the Tortora text.

I ordered this book for school. Haven't used it much.
Good, but not necessary.......2006-04-10
This book is good if you're new to Biology classes and need to learn HOW to study for a biology exam. The textbook has all the same information and then some, so this book isn't a necessity.
