    Product Description

Chemically and biologically functionalized piezoelectric sensors are attractive alternatives to surface sensitive transducers due to their surpassing versatility. The fourth volume of Springer Series on Chemical Sensors and Biosensors includes a comprehensive theoretical treatment and the current state-of-the art applications of the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). Interface circuits and the study of viscoelasticity and micromechanics as well as surface roughness with the QCM are discussed. The broad field of analytical applications of piezoelectric sensors is covered, which ranges from nucleic acid detection, immunosensors, protein-membrane interactions, monitoring of cells by imprinted polymers to the viscoelastic response of living mammalian cells on QCM-resonators. Sophisticated derivatives of the classical QCM such as rupture event scanning, the use of extraordinary high frequency crystals, and the electrochemical QCM clearly reveal the advantages of combining multiple techniques to realize new detection schemes on the basis of piezoelectric resonators.

If you are going for PhD, then read this book.

But, if you are planning on getting a job in the industry, then forget this book. Study Analog and Digital design, VLSI, C.

2 out of 5 stars Very superficial coverage, and my book is missing sections.......2006-01-18

When I recieved the book, everything seemed to be in order, and it was only when I tried to read chapter 4 (Fundamentals of Light-Matter Interaction, which some might argue, is quite important) that I discovered, this valuable chapter had been replaced by incoherent babble about statistical methods and linear algebra, that did not match the table of contents. Furthermore, it didn't have anything to do with biology, or photonics. I don't know if all of the books contain this misprint, but I wouldn't buy it from Amazon (at least check it when you get it so that you can return it if your's is screwed up!)
Furthermore, the book has many interesting topics, but each is covered in a very superficial way. Mathematical models are avoided almost totally, and the ocassional equations have no derivation. This could be a plus for some, but I feel like this book would not help anyone solve actually engineering problems in biophotonics. It was merely a collection of interesting summaries.

4 out of 5 stars Biological Sciences Graduate Student.......2004-06-18

Like many introduction to optics books published by Wiley, this book is well organized and gives an excellent overview with some good illustrations (terrible representation of Optical Coherence Tomography). It is a good overview of many areas like bioimaging and biosensors. As a biological science graduate student, I found the few formulas easy to understand. FRET and FLIM should have been developed better. The web references are convenient.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to have a good overview on different biological optical applications.

      Book Description

The contributions to this special volume were selected in order to show present trends in the field of bioprocess monitoring and estimation. Established conventional methods are critically discussed and non-conventional ones introduced. Two papers focus on more fuzzy approaches such as electronic noses or advanced chemometric techniques. One contribution illustrates the high potential with the example of cephalosporin production. Three contributions dare to "look" inside the cells, one by the analysis of (microscopic) images, one by trying to estimate the so-called physiological state, and the third by analyzing the metabolic network. This shows how sophisticated (bio)chemical as well as mathematical analytical tools result in better understanding of living systems and bioprocesses.

                Book Description

Synergy is the key to creating more intelligent biosensors. Engineers develop smaller, more integrated technologies; biologists and chemists develop increasingly selective and sensitive sensor elements; material scientists develop ways to bring it all together. However, most books focus only on the chemistry aspects of biosensor technologies. With a multidisciplinary perspective, Smart Biosensor Technology examines the design, applications, and future directions of this rapidly evolving field. This book collects contributions from leading specialists in a variety of scientific and engineering disciplines involved in different aspects of biosensor design and technology. Five broad sections provide a systematic structure that builds progressively from key concepts to emerging technologies and future directions. Following an introduction to the fundamental characteristics and functions of the underlying technologies, two sections explore the role materials play in developing smart biosensors. Next, the editors devote an entire section to bioelectronics with a focus on a biophotonic material called bacteriorhodopsin and its application to photoelectric biosensing, chemical sensing, and color imaging. They also present design and fabrication of new bioelectronic sensing arrays on flexible substrates. The final section explores a variety of smart biosensor applications in detecting food pathogens, monitoring toxicity, and detecting allergens and viruses. Building a solid background in the underlying technologies and demonstrating how to apply this knowledge to solve real problems, Smart Biosensor Technology is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary guide to extending the capabilities of biosensors for a broad range of fields.

                    Book Description

The goal of this book is to disseminate information on the worldwide status and trends in biosensing R and D to government decisionmakers and the research community. The contributors critically analyze and compare biosensing research in the United States with that being pursued in Japan, Europe and other major industrialized countries. Biosensing includes systems that incorporate a variety of means, including electrical, electronic, and photonic devices; biological materials (e.g., tissue, enzymes, nucleic acids, etc.); and chemical analysis to produce detectable signals for the monitoring or identification of biological phenomena. In a broader sense, the study of biosensing includes any approach to detection of biological elements and the associated software or computer identification technologies (e.g., imaging) that identify biological characteristics. Biosensing is finding a growing number of applications in a wide variety of areas, including biomedicine, food production and processing, and detection of bacteria, viruses, and biological toxins for biowarfare defense. Subtopics likely to be covered in this study include the following: Nucleic acid sensors and DNA chips and arrays, organism- and cell-based biosensors, bioelectronics and biometrics, biointerfaces and biomaterials; biocompatibility and biofouling, integrated, multi-modality sensors and sensor networks, system issues, including signal transduction, data interpretation, and validation, novel sensing algorithms, e.g., non-enzyme-based sensors for glucose, mechanical sensors for prosthetics, related issues in bio-MEMS and NEMS (microelectromechanical and nanoelectromechanical systems), possibly including actuators, applications in biomedicine, the environment, food industry, security and defense. Particular emphasis will be on technologies that may lead to portable or fieldable devices/instruments. Important consideration will be given to an integrated approach to detection, storage, analysis, validation, interpretation and presentation of results from the biosensing system. Focus will be on research from the following disciplines: BioMems and nano, optical spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy, chemometrics, pattern recognition, telemetry, signal processing, and toxicology. Finally, beyond the above technical issues, the study will also address the following non-technical issues: Mechanisms for enhancing international and interdisciplinary cooperation in the field, opportunities for shortening the lead time for deployment of new biosensing technologies emerging from the laboratory, long range research, educational, and infrastructure issues that need addressed to promote better progress in the field, current government R and D funding levels overseas compared to the United States, to the extent data are available.
