5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book.......2007-10-05

This book was recommended to me by a newly married woman with stepchildren. I, at the time, was dating a woman with children (none of my own). I was having a difficult time being an 'instant father', and didn't know what to do half the time. I loved this book, and used the information daily. When I am around children now, I still use the information in the book. When I have children of my own, you better believe I'll be re-reading this one. (I also bought this book for my brother)

5 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE!.......2007-09-19

There are not enough good things to say about this book. I have it in conjunction with Love and Logic Magic for Early Childhood and contrary to some other reviewers, I love having them both together.

I can't recommend this parenting technique enough. I have a 2 year old boy and we started using love and logic principles just after his 2nd birthday. What a difference it made in us all!!! Just like the authors say - it puts the fun back in being a parent. We are always getting comments on his calm demeanor and our ability to always be patient.

If you or someone you know is struggling with a child, toddler to preteen, this book will change the family for the better. It gives you the exact things to say in all kinds of situations, in fact half to book is dedicated to doing just that. This book gives you the tools to restore peace, happiness, hope, order and fun back into your home. I'm so thankful for this book!

5 out of 5 stars THE best parenting book ever.......2007-09-18

All my friend and I SWEAR by this book. This my not be the ONLY book you need, but it surely is one key book you MUST have. Extremely practical - there are actual cases and actual phrases to use, while explaining the philosophy behind the approach. This is the ultimate "how to" book on raising responsible, moral, kind children who understand cause and effect! It also takes the "you vs me" out of it and teaches children that their choices and actions have consequences. As a Christian, it sits well with me. It is especially excellent with defiant or contrary children, and children raise in foster homes or others who have attachment challenges.

5 out of 5 stars Best parenting book my wife and I have found.......2007-09-03

This is an excellent book on parenting, the best my wife and I have found. The principles work very well - we wish we had found it earlier. We and our children are much happier after using this book.

This is very sound parenting. This book teaches you how to raise responsible children who think about the consequences of their actions. It teaches principles and gives you strategies to help your children anticipate the real consequences of their actions - a good thing to learn when you're still a child and "the price tag is still low."

This book is not the draconian book that some negative reviewers have interpretted it to be. The authors advocate genuine compassion for children who experience realistic consequences to their bad choices. It is true that the principles in this book likely require more work on the part of the parent than other approaches.

Regarding whether this book advocates corporal punishment - it does not. Page 221 from the 2006 edition:

"Spankings ... give kids a quick escape from the responsibility of living with a bad choice. Instead of having to live with consequences and think about solutions, youngsters have a brief moment of pain, and then they're off the hook."

"The original edition of this book advocateded the use of spanking in limited, controlled situations. However, as we have grown in our professions and as more valid research has become available, we have changed our postion. There are many good reasons to avoid the use of spankings...[list follows]."

1 out of 5 stars Sick authors.......2007-08-30

Any author who presents themselves as wanting to help children and then advocates corporal punishment is a sociopath at worst or terribly misguided at best. They should never yield power over someone smaller or weaker than themselves. Maybe the authors need to be physically bullied (ex. spanked) by someone 100+ lbs bigger than them so they can feel what a child feels when some stupid or gullible adult follows their advice. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Parents and caregivers- please think long and hard before you hit the children who are depending on you for love and protection. There are much better ways of discipling children. Learn them.

    Book Description

This classic text, first published in 1971, has introduced tens of thousands of students to sound reasoning using a wealth of current, relevant, and stimulating examples all put together and explained in Howard Kahane's uniquely witty and invigorating writing style. Long the choice of instructors who want to "keep students interested", LOGIC AND CONTEMPORARY RHETORIC combines examples from TV, newspapers, magazines, advertisements, and, in typical Kahanian fashion, our nation¹s political dialogue. The text not only brings the concepts alive for students, but puts critical thinking skills into a context that students will retain and use throughout their lives. This is a book you can actually count on students to read.

    5 out of 5 stars A How-To Book for Parenting Teens!.......2007-08-13

In today's complex world, it is harder and harder to know what to do to maintain better relationships with our teens as well as to guide them appropriately. This book is a must for anyone who finds themselves at a loss by the challenges of the teen years, especially given the changes in our contemporary lives.

5 out of 5 stars A book and a philosophy admired by counselors in this area.......2007-07-05

The Love and Logic series has been greatly appreciated and used by a number of counselors in the southwest Missouri area. I find this book especially helpful not only for restructuring the behavior of one's own children, but for helping to create a win-win sitution for teenage students. It also makes a great gift for friends and family who are looking for new ways to lovingly outsmart.

    Ann L. Allman, Ed.D.

    5 out of 5 stars excellant book.......2007-05-13

I have just started this book and am nearly done with the new edition of Parenting with love and logic. This book was recommended my my childs vice pricipal at school. It has been a big help. It isn't easy working with teens especially if the parent has been doing things differently most their lives and to try to retrain as a parent and also the child is hard work and persistance consistance is the name of the game! Always remember, it's NEVER too later to try something new.

5 out of 5 stars Parenting Teens With Love And Logic.......2007-04-03

This book was very informative. The techniques the authors describe are effective, and easy to implement. The effort required is well worth it if you are truly interested in changing your teen's behavior.
The last chapter of the book contains what the authors describe as pearls. They are great dialog starters for tough subjects like sex drugs and money.
The only thing I would change about this book; is buying it thirty years earlier, when I raised my first teenager.

1 out of 5 stars This book should be called "White Middle-Upper Class Christian Parenting with Love & Logic".......2007-03-21

Bluntly put, I found this book over generalized, arrogant, assuming and idealizing. The use of behaviorist techniques is the book's single redeeming quality, offering a small peak into the world of behavioral therapy and its effectiveness when working with teens. Even still, parents would be much better off buying a book on behaviorism than reading the repetitive stories and dialogs between parents and teens.

In terms of ethnicity, race and religious views, the book does not apply cross-culturally. Race and ethnicity are never addressed; two topics that have play a significant role in child rearing. The name of the book is not Christian Parenting Teens With Love & Logic, but it should be. Constant references to God, Christ and The Bible are made and cited as sources for how to be a good parent. A good researcher and author acknowledges their bias at the beginning of a book, but Foster Cline and Jim Fay fail to do so. "It is ok to express the desire to our children that they lead a heterosexual life. Christ's message in the new testament is very clear : God's children are all and equally loved." The author's religious beliefs so heavily saturate the information presented that it is clear they cannot separate their personal biases or even acknowledge the existence of them. The religious stereotypes are appalling, saying that parents should watch out for teens who, "wear black clothes and jewelry with inverted pentacles", that they suggest involvement in satanic activity. However, when I was a teenager, all of my friends and I wore black and studied unique religions and spiritual systems. None of us were satanic or involved in cults; we were artists. This is yet another example of how the authors stereotype and force their personal ignorant beliefs on the reader.

In terms of gender, Parenting Teens With Love & Logic does a superficial job of addressing the topic. Changes that occur in boys and girls are lightly discussed. This is a recurrent issue throughout the book- it touches only briefly on every topic and never goes into detail. While sex and gender are two different topics, it is important to look at how the author addresses both.

If I had to pick one reason, of many, why I would not recommend this book to a client or friend, the discussion of sex and sexuality would be it. The authors personal beliefs about sexuality and premarital sex are so deeply ingrained in each word of this book that Cline and Fay's message is crystal clear: premarital sex is wrong and you should only have sex with one person, your spouse, or else you will get an STD, AIDS, or have issues with fertility later on. Sweeping generalizations and simply inaccurate statements are made in reference to how boys and girls view sex. "A girl usually regards sex as being closely related to reproduction. A guy usually considers sex a physical and emotional release." Not one female I spoke with would concur with this statement, rather they all passionately disagreed and deemed the author arrogant and challenged the statement as an old fashioned myth not in any way applicable to women today.

In summary, the pitfalls of Parenting With Love & Logic far outweigh the few pearls of behaviorist wisdom. As a professional I would not recommend or cite this book as a good source for parenting skills or wisdom, but rather as a superficial, inadequate and biased book that ought to be re-titled. Parenting books that claim to hold no ethnic or religious affiliation should contain only information, research, and techniques, not personal opinions. As previously stated, Parenting With Love & Logic is not one of these books.

If you really want to have some fun though, do a little research on Foster Cline...had I done it before I would not have bought this book.

2 out of 5 stars Poor Instructional Material... If You Are An Instructor, DO NOT UseThis Book In Your Classes.......2006-08-28

This book is next to useless in helping students to understand fallacies and identify them. It is probably the poorest instructional material I have encountered in all of my years in college. Humor was incorporated into this text in an effort to help students better understand the material, however, that effort is a big failure when it comes to this student, and probably also for many others.

Instead of helping, the humor detracts from the instructional value of the material and distracts the student rather than helping him or her to comprehend. Chapters 4, 5 and 6 deal with rhetoric and fallacies, however, I have found those three chapters to be the most incomprehensible and unhelpful chapters in the entire book. I am glad I got a used copy of this book... it is certainly NOT worth the price tag placed on a new copy.

5 out of 5 stars Critically Thinking, Critically Funny, Critically Astute!!.......2006-03-24

What an awesome textbook! As a critical reasoning, reading, and writing instructor for twelve years, I have used this textbook, off and on, and I always return to it. There is no other textbook like it, but there are a lot of imitators. It infuses humor, pertinent political events, and very clear critical thinking concepts (like claims, fallacies, credibility, etc.)and presents those ideas in ways that make it a pleasure to read and learn from this book.

4 out of 5 stars Rhetorical tricks exposed.......2006-03-24

This is a college textbook that I purchased because I was searching for a book that would review all the rhetorical tricks being used by politicians and special interest groups. For the past six years I've been simultaneously impressed and distressed with the increased sophistication being used to dodge discussing core issues and deceiving people. I believed I needed to further develop my awareness of when someone was using a rhetorical trick to avoid an issue or deceive the public, including myself. Once again excellent reader reviews helped me navigate to and choose this book and I was not disappointed! This book confronted many of the tricks being used by those in the media and using the media to get their message across while avoiding the truth.

First off, this book mostly focuses on only one aspect critical thinkers require, and that is identifying and rejecting rhetorical arguments. This book does not have any chapters that would help business people to filter out extraneous information and focus on critical factors even though in fast moving industries, this is a critical skill coming under the umbrella necessary to be labeled a critical thinker in the business world. A better title for this book would have been "Rhetorical Fallacies".

So don't buy this book to help you hone your skill in deciding what issues to focus on at work and how to drill-down to essential issues necessary to make good decisions. I highly recommend this book if you are looking to minimize the ability of ever-increasingly sophisticated rhetoric to mislead you. I also now enjoy the fact that I can name most of the rhetorical tricks being used in an attempt to deceive us. This book is a fast read, with many examples that help clarify the principles; many of these examples are humorous. I'll definitely keep this book as a reference to name the ploy being attempted.

Because the book is a textbook, the new price is ridiculous. I bought this used through Amazon and had an excellent experience; easily getting a barely marked-up book from a student at a very fair price - ya gotta love Amazon!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful senses of humor!.......2005-08-21

Like Andrew Hallock, it did not escape my notice that all the political references were Republicans or conservatives, and I've grown weary of that bent in academia and would have preferred a more balanced look at politics.

Nonetheless, this book was hugely enjoyable for me. While I bought it for a class, I would have read it just for a fun. But then, I'm kind of stickler for critical thinking anyway. Fellow students hated the class and had a hard time with it.

IMO, critical thinking skills are woefully lacking in today's world and if I were king, this book would be required reading for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars training critical minds.......2003-10-26

Much of what we read, hear and see in today's media reflects the assumption that, since everyone is entitled to express their opinion, all opinions are equally ready for prime time. This book grants the first premise but challenges us to consider whether all opinions are actually created equal. I strongly recommend this text for students, teachers and even talk show hosts who'd like to sharpen their opinion-expressing skills and to understand why they might need some tuning up.
For the most part, the philospher/authors use conversational but not patronizing (and frequently witty) language, sharp examples of effective as well as falacious reasoning drawn from contemporary debates and rants, and provide exercises useful for classroom and self-study.
It doesn't matter where you stand on the ideological spectrum-- radial anarchist,neo-facist racist or any point between, frequent use of this book will help you to persuade others of your beliefs or convince you to re-examine yours.

That's what Critical Thinking (and critical thinking) does.

    Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

1 out of 5 stars Not fit for critical thinking.......2007-09-11

Although the authors have plenty of authority in this field, the book comes across to me as marketing or propaganda. They have focused on what they view as the essence of critical thinking which they call "fairmindedness." However, their intent seems less about teaching people how to apply logic to life's situations and more about an agenda of promoting liberal, Humanist philosophy. They eschew emotion as counterproductive to "fairmindedness," yet the text is replete with emotionally charged words, symbols, and examples. I was very disappointed, and I struggled to find the nuggets of truth in the sea of philosophical pondering.

--You will see (in private) the assets and liabilities of your own personal thinking - as well as the the assets and liabilities in how your family, friends and associates think.
--Highly readable - very informative - absorbing and engrossing presentations - the art of critical thinking made user-friendly, enjoyable, and magnetic. A book worth using to learn or to teach "how" to think - as well as to employ for reflecting upon "how" we think.

Critical Thinking: Tools for Taking Charge of Your Professional and Personal Life
by Richard Paul & Linda Elder

One of the hallmarks of strategic thinking, whether it is for business or for personal application, is the ability to think critically. This is also the expressed contention of Michel Robert in his series of well-known strategic thinking books for CEOs & senior managers.

In this particular book, which also happens to be one of my personal favourites, the two authors argue that everything you do in life is determined by the quality of your thinking. I fully concur with the authors. The two authors are principal leaders of the Center for Critical Thinking, a well-respected research & professional development organisation among the critical thinking community.

What I like about this book is that the authors help the reader to become a better thinker in every aspect of your life: in your career, & as a consumer, a citizen, a friend, a parent, & even a lover. They also help the reader to analyze your own thought processes so you can identify your own weaknesses & overcome them. To be more precise, they actually show the reader how to "take thinking apart" & assess it for quality.

In a nutshell, readers will learn how to improve all the three core components of thinking:

    - analysis;
    - evaluation;
    - re-thinking;

The authors have also provided practical metacognitive exercises for honing your thinking skills every day.

These are the powerful & beautiful features of this wonderful book!

In the end analysis, thinking strategically is actually using effective critical thinking to achieve your goals & enhance your life. This also applies in the business realm.

I want to compliment both authors for crafting this excellent guide & field book on critical thinking. Their writings are clear, succinct & concise. Personally, I have enjoyed working on their exercises in the book.

If you want to get smart, especially in today's chaotic world where you're at the mercy of everyone else - from dishonest politicians to aggressive, stop-at-nothing ad agencies - get hold of this book quickly.

Readers who are interested to explore further the two authors' masterwork are welcome to check out their corporate website. They have a lot of other good stuff e.g. Thinker's Guides.

My main interest in this subject lies in a search for answers to the question of why perfectly sane and intelligent people put faith in God above reasoning. Why do so many choose to believe so strongly with so little evidence? Unfortunately Thomas Gilovich absolutely refuses to cast light on religious delusions, but mainly states that theists and atheist "both need to develop the habit of thinking more broadly." Not helpful at all and sort of a faux pas to include this lame comment in the book.

Never the less, the book is a good and thorough introduction to the subject of our penchant for faulty reasoning, but also somewhat dry and repetitive. I wasn't exactly rolling on the floor with laughter, which might be too much to ask; but the many examples and anecdotes could be presented with greater vigour without harming the seriousness and validity of the study.

May I recommend: "Don't Believe Everything You Think: The 6 Basic Mistakes We Make in Thinking" by Thomas E. Kida, which is very similar in content and reference a lot of the same sources, but is also more playful and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Vulcans Should Read This Book.......2007-06-02

Hello, my name is Mr. Spock. You may know me from the TV series StarTrek. For years I've been tormented by the illogic of humans. Let's face it, Captain Kirk and Dr. McCoy are not the sharpest phasers in the intergalactic utility belt!

Then I read Gilovich's book. It helped me realize that humans are most illogical in times of uncertainty when there is no clear trend and not enough information upon which to make a good decision. In such cases, especially when a decision must be made, logic is not going to be of much help. As a result, people develop simple, but often inaccurate, theories to help them through painful states of indecision. The decision may be good or not, but at least a decision has been made, and that alone provides comfort.

Unfortunately, humans also have a strong desire to justify their theories, and this is where they get into trouble. Data that proves the theory is retained and emphasized, and data that doesn't is heavily discounted. So the theory takes on a life of its own despite the facts, which admittedly may themselves be ambiguous at times.

The bottom line is that this book gave me a greater understanding of humans. As a result, I feel more comfortable communicating with them, and just being around them in general. If you're part Vulcan like I am, or even a logical human, I strongly suggest you read this excellent book about human thinking and decision making. You won't be sorry. Live long and prosper!

Mr. Scot, I have completed my Amazon review, and have obtained the Chinese food and pornography magazines the Captain has requested. Please beam me up now.

4 out of 5 stars Question your assumptions and challenge what you think you know.......2006-08-24

This book provides a well-organized survey of issues that limit our reasoning abilities:

    - Our misperception of random events, as in the "clustering illusions" that lead us to believe in the hot hand, for example.

    - Our misunderstanding of statistical regression, which, for instance, affects our perception of the roles of reward and punishment in education.

    - Our tendency to seek confirmatory information, as in the justification of our choices.

    - Our inability to see what could have happened under different circumstances, as in self-fulfilling prophecies (e.g. a negative first impression or the presumed insolvency of a financial institution).

    - Our own biases that make us expose inconsistent information to more critical scrutiny than consistent information.

    - Asymmetries that distort what we recall and, thus, what we take into account to evaluate the validity of beliefs (as in multiple endpoints situations or one-sided events).

    - Our tendency to believe what we want to believe (specially about ourselves), as if beliefs were possessions.

    - The distortions present in secondhand information (a.k.a. sharpening and leveling).

    - The influence of what we think others believe (and also of the inadequate feedback we often receive about that).

These limitations make us draw incorrect conclusions and bolster erroneous beliefs. Being aware of them helps us in distinguishing what we know well from what we only think is true. Just this is of utmost importance for thinking clearly. Could there be a better reason for reading this book?

3 out of 5 stars Should Have Been Better Than It Was.......2006-07-29

Gilovich starts this book of with a real bang! After reading the Introduction, I thought this book would be really interesting and change the way I look at the world. He writes in a college-teacher tone that will not be approachable to those he most needs to reach. In other words, I really don't need a book to tell me to avoid holistic cretins, ESP, psychics, mysticism, and all that other garbage.

The first half of his book is concerned with a review of the psychology literature from the '70s and '80s on how people arrive at their beliefs. This is boring and somewhat like a set of lecture notes. The information in it is useful, but it could be summarized and edited. The second half of the book is devoted to why people shouldn't believe in the topics I mentioned above. Most people who read his book wouldn't even dream of subscribing to these beliefs, so the whole second half is pretty boring.

Gilovich finishes the book by telling us that psychologists are best at understanding the world and are the most perceptive professionals out there, bar none. While admitting that the core thought processes that lead to logical decision making come from hard science, Gilovich wants us to believe that the softies have perfected clear thinking about the world. He should have reread that portion of the book when he wasn't overheated and realized how silly it would sound to attorneys, physicians, scientists, and other thoughtful people.

5 out of 5 stars Required for all psychology students!!!.......2006-06-21

This book is a contemporary classic that should be required reading in all psychology programs. As a psychologist, I am regularly appalled by how few trained psychologists know of the research discussed in this book, indeed, of decision science in general!! It only goes to show, there's scientific psychology (of which this book qualifies), and then, well, there's the other 99%...the crap, fluff, unsupported, unscientific, claims and practices that arise out of pseudo-scientific approaches, misinterpretations of data, and fallacious assumptions and conclusions. As an exemplar of what's good in a field rife with methodological manure and hocus pocus B.S. (e.g. psychotherapy, psychiatry, etc.), this book really shines. Read it and discover why some of psychology really is a science.

    Book Description

How Successful People Win is a serious self-help book using as its central metaphor the life of the cowboy and his behavior as he leaves his bunkhouse. Based upon a lifetime of observation of the successful and how they got that way, Ben Stein suggests that you imitate the determination, inner mobility, activity, flexibility—and the refusal to indulge in self-pity—of the cowboy in order to get what you want out of life.
The idea is that if you never indulge in making excuses, refuse to let other people’s hangups get in your way, and move deliberately toward clearly thought-out goals, you will get where you want to go. Just as the cowboy refuses to allow himself to get sidetracked by trivia, so can you refuse to allow life’s inevitable challenges and distractions mar your own success and happiness. The choice is yours.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Advice.......2007-08-01

Ben Stein's concept of Bunkhouse logic is pretty good stuff, and let me tell you it would do a lot of people in today's society a lot of good to hear about it. His basic message is that many of us would be a lot happier and a lot more successful if we adopted the attitude and philosophy of the American cowboy. The cowboy doesn't sit around and rationalize why he can't get the drive done; he just does it. He doesn't drown himself and his success in a sea of pointless excuses manufactured as temporary pick-me-ups that only end up creating more and more failure.

Happiness is contingent upon feeling good about yourself which is usually contingent on achieving something. Contrary to what a shrink would tell you, the last thing you need if you're depressed is to "explore your feelings," wasting time trying to discover why you don't feel good about yourself. No, what you need is to act, to go out and achieve. Good feelings will follow in course.

Ignore the advice of others. Most people only want to see you fail, even your friends. It's called the contrast principle. The more successful you are the less successful they look. Your friends, deep down, want you to fail. Then they can sympathize and console, and this makes them feel good. Ignore the advice of others unless it is coming from someone you want to be just like. Pick some role models and mimic their successful behavior. Do NOT inadvertantly end up modeling the behavior of those around you unless you explicitly want to end up just like them.

The only flaw, as I see it, with Stein's arguments (aside from the fact that he's repetitive) is that he tells people to go and do what they want, but ignores the psychological fact that what many people think they want is not at all conducive to happiness. He seems, for instance, wholly unaware of the hedonic paradox: that odd fact of psychology that people who make pursuing their own pleasure their main goal in life rarely actually end up content or satistfied. They often end up deeply unfulfilled and depressed. This is a flaw in his argument, as getting what you think you want is not always a good thing. What is conducive to happiness is wanting to get things that lead to contentment and satisfaction, real achievements and intellectual pleasures, not some of the baser and sillier things that Stein sometimes here talks about. To paraphrase John Stuart Mill, "Happier is Socrates dissatisfied than a pig satisfied."

4 out of 5 stars That rarest of rare beast ..........2007-07-27

... an inspirational book that actually has something to say. Moving beyond the usual claptrap that passes for wisdom these days, Ben Stein actually appears to have given some thought to what he wanted to say. And while his use of the cowboy as an archetype is a bit strained at time, I found this book so helpful that I immediate sent a copy to my brother.

    Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books Ever!.......2007-06-21

I suppose that a lot of people have a favorite inspirational book, whether it is Canfield's "The Success Principles" or Byrne's "The Secret". Well, this is my favorite.

Ben Stein explains how he was a disillusioned Yale graduate working for the FTC in a dilapidated Washington, DC office building. Using the principles in this book, he later became an investing guru, author, and media star (appearing in the movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and his own game show, "Win Ben Stein's Money".)

Ben Stein's paragon for success is the cowboy (thus the work "bunkhouse" in the title). Rugged, self-reliant, and unflappable, the cowboy embodies all of the qualities needed to succeed. For Stein, you must take a risk and work hard to get ahead in life, just like the hero of the American mythos, the cowboy. READ THIS BOOK -- YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.

5 out of 5 stars You can escape from the rat trap.......2007-05-17

Ben Stein is dead on once again. There are jobs and people out there that make us unhappy as individuals and there is no excuse not to remove them from your life.

One reviewer claims the book is common sense, but if this were true, why are so many people caught is jobs with terrible pay or terrible bosses.

The book outlines why and how to move forward in life. Even the individual with the most perfect life could read this book to gain insight and not be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Saddle Up...Long Ride Ahead, But It's Worth It.......2007-03-22

Ben Stein has the smarts. Unlike most famous actors, he's gotten by on more than his, er, good looks. He worked hard for what he has. He knows practical economics better than many economics professors (his dad was one). He's been a teacher, journalist, and a lawyer. And he's spent his entire life actively observing successful people. So when he speaks (or writes), I'm willing to listen. And Stein speaks the truth...like it or not.

Others have touched upon most aspects of this short book, which is of course about being a success. "Success" here is defined as "getting what you want in life." The book is broken into five parts, with the meatiest being Part IV ("Preparing for the Game") and Part V ("The Rules of the Game"). The binding theme is "bunkhouse logic": an emphasis on activity, mobility, and performance--not excuses. This is something cowboys have known for a long time. You gotta work HARD for success. And then you gotta get up early the next morning and do it again.

If I'm going to allow someone into my head to do a little lifehacking--and pay for it to boot--then for my money I want to hear what works, no matter how tough it may be. Stein doesn't disappoint me. If your idea of success is the sort you get from late night infomercials ("Lose weight with no money down!" "Get rich eating nothing but chocolate!") this book will disappoint you. (Remember what dear Wesley told Buttercup? "Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something.") Stein emphasizes what truly successful people have always understood: Success = Work. Hard work, and lots of it.

This lesson (really, the heart of the book) is summed up in Part V, Rule #4: `Life is a Process, and the Process Never Ends.' Successful people (not lottery winners and trustafarians) know that with success, "there is no sudden leap into the stratosphere of no cares and no worries. There's only advancing step by step, slowly and tortuously, up the pyramid toward your goals."

Again, this may not be what you want to hear, but Stein offers enough wisdom and anecdotes (and a dab of his trademark dry humor) to demonstrate that true success in life is not about easy money but about hard work and steady progress. And that's the true joy of success.

    Book Description

Guaranteed to coax a smile from the grumpiest of grumps, FURRY LOGIC is a charming little book with a big heart and sly humor. Exquisitely detailed watercolor paintings depicting animals caught up in the joy and drudgery of life are paired with old adages given a new spin for our times. Tender thoughts such as "Smile first thing in the morning—get it over with," "If you don't agree with me—it means you haven't been listening," and "You'll always be my best friend—you know too much" go a long way toward banishing the blahs and shaking off the blues. Designer and illustrator Jane Seabrook's 40 universally appealing paintings of birds, bears, penguins, chipmunks, frogs, baboons, and more are rendered in delicate and biologically accurate detail using a tiny sable brush with a single hair at its tip. In the spirit of international best seller The Blue Day Book, FURRY LOGIC speaks to the human condition in a way we can all relate to and feel good about.

My friend showed me this book and I was so impressed I bought a whole bunch. The art work is really impressive to say nothing of the cute sayings that go with them. I gave away the first bunch I bought so I had to reorder.

Very cute pick me up type of book. I give the book as holiday and Birthday gifts. Everyone loves it.

4 out of 5 stars Hilarious until the end.......2007-01-11

This book made everyone in my family laugh which is quite the task...that is until the last few pages. A little past halfway through, the humor hits a dead point and the book is no longer funny, but I would definently buy it again for the first half.

THIS BOOK IS THE PERFECT GIFT FOR ANYONE! It's full of beautiful drawings & gut busting, funny quips. I received it as a party gift the year it was first released. We passed it around the party of 12 ladies..most of whom ended up in tears from laughter. Since that time, I have purchased over 10 of these books for gifts for men, women, and college students. Yesterday, I had an 8th grade girl who asked me where I bought the latest book because she wants to purchase her own. She said it was one of the funniest books she had ever read. Don't miss out on this one.

This book is hilarious! It was bought as a gift from my mother as we sometimes buy each other little books with silly phrases like this. This is the best one I've read yet. All of the phrases are unique and funny. And the illustrations are great. Sort of expensive for what it is but worth the price in my opinion.

    Book Description

An extraordinary book that will dramatically change the way you experience life.
Finite games are the familiar contests of everyday life, the games we play in business and politics, in the bedroom and on the battlefied -- games with winners and losers, a beginning and an end. Infinite games are more mysterious -- and ultimately more rewarding. They are unscripted and unpredictable; they are the source of true freedom.
In this elegant and compelling work, James Carse explores what these games mean, and what they can mean to you. He offers stunning new insights into the nature of property and power, of culture and community, of sexuality and self-discovery, opening the door to a world of infinite delight and possibility.
"An extraordinary little book . . . a wise and intimate companion, an elegant reminder of the real."

5 out of 5 stars provides an alternative way to look at the world.......2007-09-23

Finite and Infinite Games divides what people do into two aspects, finite games and infinite games. Infinite games are the preferred approach to life. Finite games are played to win. Infinite games are played to continue play. This book made me wish I knew more about philosophy as the author is obviously providing a counterpoint to much of previous philosophy. So I think that a reader with a moderate knowledge of philosophy would benefit more from this book than I did. Still I got a lot out of this book and highly recommend it. I think this is a book that one can come back to often in one's travels through philosophy.

    5 out of 5 stars Another perspective.......2007-05-13

This is the second time I've owned this book; lost it in a downsizing. But it
was such a different way of looking at life, I needed to have it to refer to.
It views our behavior as a series of games; somw played to win, others for
the pleasure of continuing to play. I think such a viewpoint helps us to see
what we are doing in a more important way - perhaps the temporary and fleet-
ing versus the more satisfying over the long pull. I heartily recommend it to
those who wish to be more conscious of what they are doing, so they may be
able to distinguish between what is temporary and what lasts.

5 out of 5 stars This book changed my life........2007-02-03

I ran into this book randomly while traveling. It changed my life. It's a new framework for seeing the world and although it may not speak to everyone, it is certainly written in clear prose and will give the reader a lot to ponder. I heartily recommend it for anyone on a journey, whether it be literal or metaphorical.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond Winning and Losing.......2007-01-29

It is hard to imagine reading Finite and Infinite Games without having one's perspective on life dramatically altered. Carse differentiates between two modes of thinking and behaving in the world - one mode is where we strive in an essentially humourless way to `win' within the same old meaningless games without ever questioning why we are doing it, and the other mode is where we play in order to be surprised, and where `winning' and `losing' become irrelevant. Carse sees the world as being utterly engrossed in the first mode, in finite games, whereas individuals engaged in the second mode, the players of the Infinite Game, appear very much to be a minority, generally ignored and often actively oppressed by the humourless finite game players. 5 out of 5 stars I admire this book.......2006-08-28

Not for everyone, but, for the right kind of person it is a fantastic and very unusual little book which touches on some of the most profound issues of humanity in a way that is not at all dogmatic or didactic. It is a book that will invite many interpretations; it is not clear cut. It will make you think Big Time! And its a very short read if you're busy! I'm buying my second copy because I lent it to someone...somewhere... It will probably be my 3rd or 4th reading. Highly recommended for the right kind of person! Enjoy!
