Book Description

Molecular Genetics of Bacteria fulfills the need for a comprehensive, primary textbook on bacterial and microbial genetics. Ideally suited for advanced undergraduate and graduate level courses, this book presents an interesting, modern perspective of the subject and offers descriptive background information, detailed experimental methods and data interpretation, examples of genetic analysis, and advanced material relevant to current applications of molecular genetics in biotechnology. The theme of genetic analysis is used to integrate all of the concepts presented in the text, with the pathogenesis and recombinant DNA techniques covered in their own chapters. Although the much-studied genetics of

E. coli are discussed throughout the book, many other microbial systems are introduced in order to show the breadth and diversity of the discipline of bacterial genetics. Chapters are pedagogically constructed and end with a review of key concepts, a set of discussion questions, a set of problems for exercise and testing assignments, and answers to the questions. An end of book glossary reviews all of the key terms found in the text. This book, extensively reviewed and class tested by instructors over the past four years, serves as an important text for all courses in bacterial and microbial genetics. 3 out of 5 stars Not a good choice for the visual learner.......2006-06-25

If you are a "visual learner," then this is NOT, I repeat, NOT, the book for you- I cannot emphasise this enough!

The text is very well written, however, the font used is rather small, and there are only FOUR colors used throughout the entire book.

The text is done entirely in light brown, black, grey and white.

Students like me -strongly visual learners- will be miserable; everyone else will like the book.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic introduction to the subject.......2005-08-01

This is one of few college textbooks I've used that has actually HELPED me learn the course material. The book takes you from the basics (DNA structure and replication, etc.) all the way through some very complex concepts while never missing a beat. It's surprisingly readable and student-user-friendly whether you're a beginner or a certifiable gene jockey. My only complaint is the quality of the figures; some of them are very small and thus hard to read, and as one reviewer commented, they are sort of simplistic to the point of not being very thorough. Having full-color illustrations would be a big plus.

Overall, this book definitely surpasses other bacterial genetics books I've seen as far as readability and organization goes. It delivers what it promises!

4 out of 5 stars Very useful and informative.......2005-03-06

This book is great in developing the concepts and explaining in an easy but at the same time techinical way just what is involved in bacterial genetics. Teaching from the historical perspective you really get a sense of what these researchers were faced with and just how valuable their breakthoughs were. It doesn't try to be "hip" like so many other undergraduate textbooks out there, and for that they get full credit. The figures are a little simplistic though.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2004-03-26

This is an excellent and in-depth presentation of the molecular genetics of prokaryotes. Explanations are crystal clear throughout, and the diagrams are very well done. (Typographical errors are everywhere, but fortunately they are easy to spot and none of them are misleading.) The text can seem long at times, but the extra effort spent reading is repaid in terms of clarity. The authors are careful to insure everything is explained well. The book also covers several areas of prokaryotic biology besides molecular genetics, such as cell division, antibiotics, transport of molecules across the cell membrane, two-component signaling pathways, bacteriophages, and many others.

This is undoubtedly the best introduction to prokaryotic biology out there. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A good book for microbial genetics.......2000-02-26

While many books in molecular biology explore about the eukaryotic cells, this book is designed for prokaryotic aspects. Most of the topics are about the E.coli the bacteria that we now know much about. However, some of the topics are somewhat complicated and misleading for an undergradaute student who still needs some backgrounds in bacterial genetics (A good example is where the authors draw the picture of the interaction between lac O1, O2 and O3 in the lac operon and that's wrong!)...The questions at the end of each chapters are nice and well prepared but a few of the answers given at the end of the book do not explain the point well enough. Overall, this is a good book for anyone who wants to know specifically in the field.

    Book Description

Since the introduction of antibiotics, Western medicine has paid little attention to bacteriophages for dealing with bacterial infection. In response to the emergence of pathogenic bacteria that cannot be treated with current antibiotics, many researchers are revisiting the use of bacteriophages, or phages, to fight multidrug-resistant bacteria, as they can effectively kill bacteria resistant to all currently available antibiotics, and are more specific, more adaptive, and less expensive to produce than antibiotics. Bacteriophages: Biology and Applications provides unparalleled, comprehensive information on bacteriophages and their applications, such as phage therapy. It explores the history, biology, ecology, genomics, and applications of phages, and provides an overview of phage literature from research techniques and basic molecular biology to applications in agriculture, human therapy, and biotechnology. Chapters include the role of phages in bacterial evolution, the molecular mechanisms of phages' interactions with bacteria, the control of bacteriophages in industrial fermentations, and bacteriophage therapy in animals and humans. A detailed appendix includes the techniques, media, and methodology involved in isolating and working with phages. Filled with many helpful photographs, line drawings, and electron micrographs of phages, this is an ideal reference for scientists and researchers from a wide variety of disciplines.

      Book Description

This authoritative, timely, and comprehensively referenced compendium on the bacteriophages explores current views of how viruses infect bacteria. In combination with classical phage molecular genetics, new structural, genomic, and single-molecule technologies have rendered an explosion in our knowledge of phages. Bacteriophages, the most abundant and genetically diverse type of organism in the biosphere, were discovered at the beginning of the 20th century and enjoyed decades of used as anti-bacterial agents before being eclipsed by the antibiotic era. Since 1988, phages have come back into the spotlight as major factors in pathogenesis, bacterial evolution, and ecology. This book reveals their compelling elegence of function and their almost inconceivable diversity. Much of the founding work in molecular biology and structural biology was done on bacteriophages. These are widely used in molecular biology research and in biotechnology, as probes and markers, and in the popular method of assesing gene expression.

        Book Description

The first edition of Mark Ptashne's 1986 book describing the principles of gene regulation in phage lambda became a classic in both content and form, setting a standard of clarity and precise prose that has rarely been bettered. This edition is a reprint of the original text, together with a new chapter updating the story to 2004. Among the striking new developments are recent findings on long-range interactions between proteins bound to widely separated sites on the phage genome, and a detailed description of how gene activation works.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a classic of scientific exposition.......2005-08-19

I found out about this unassuming little book in Sean Carroll's
"Endless forms most beautiful" and was delighted. When I first started reading it, a stranger who saw me with it smiled and I soon found out why. It can be read by anyone with a modest scientific education (little more than high school) but it takes you up to the frontiers of research on gene regulation. Readers who remember the way "Scientific American" used to cover molecular biology in 1960's through the '80's (or have read reprints from that era) will appreciate the highly visual style and the clear prose. The genetic switch
in question determines whether the genes of a virus that infects a bacterial cell will quietly integrate themselves into the bacterial genome and be copied along with the bacteria's genes each time the cell divides or use the cell's machinery to make many copies of itself, quickly destroying the cell in the process. If you are like me you'll be fascinated to learn how this switch works and about the experiments that revealed its secrets.

        Book Description

In the U.S. alone some 90,000 people die from superbugsbacteria that have grown immune to antibiotics. Officials agree that this problem will only get worse with time and new drugs must be found. One hope is bacteriophages or Phages, viruses that kill bacteria but not humans. Discovered in 1915, phage therapy was successfully used against infections for twenty years before the invention of penicillin made them obsolete everywhere but Eastern Europe, where they are still in use today. In its first English translation, this book tells the fascinating story of the discovery and development of phages and details the strides being made to bring the therapy back to the West today.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good, thorough telling of the story.......2007-01-09

Phage therapy, like passive immunization, is a great "back to the future" medical story. It has gotten some attention from science journalists but, to date, everybody has just told part of the story. Thomas Hausler, in writing "Viruses vs Superbugs", has filled out the story and offers a persuasive case for phage therapy's continued relevance. The history chapters are especially fascinating. I was not previously aware of the extent to which epidemiological studies had been conducted.

It is a beautiful in-depth examination of a model to give us an appreciation for molecular biology at a comfortably sophisticated level. This effective practice of learning generality from particular models is one that, sadly, many professors have gotten away from in our current world of 1200 page textbooks. Ptashne writes with brilliant simplicity without sacrificing nature's complexity.

        Book Description

Phage-display technology has begun to make critical contributions to the study of molecular recognition. DNA sequences are cloned into phage, which then present on their surface the proteins encoded by the DNA. Individual phage are rescued through interaction of the displayed protein with a ligand, and the specific phage is amplified by infection of bacteria.

Phage-display technology is powerful but challenging and the aim of this manual is to provide comprehensive instruction in its theoretical and applied so that any scientist with even modest molecular biology experience can effectively employ it. The manual reflects nearly a decade of experience with students of greatly varying technical expertise and experience who attended a course on the technology at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

Phage-display technology is growing in importance and power. This manual is an unrivalled source of expertise in its execution and application.

          Book Description

This book relates how, between 1954 and 1961, the biologist Seymour Benzer mapped the fine structure of the rII region of the genome of the bacterial virus known as phage T4. Benzer’s accomplishments are widely recognized as a tipping point in mid-twentieth-century molecular biology when the nature of the gene was recast in molecular terms. More often than any other individual, he is considered to have led geneticists from the classical gene into the molecular age.

Drawing on Benzer’s remarkably complete record of his experiments, his correspondence, and published sources, this book reconstructs how the former physicist initiated his work in phage biology and achieved his landmark investigation. The account of Benzer’s creativity as a researcher is a fascinating story that also reveals intriguing aspects common to the scientific enterprise.
