I used this book for one of my favorite classes in college on biotechnology. It will show you the cool side of science and all of the neat things you can do with biology and DNA. The level is low enough to where you only need a minimal background to understand it, basic biology classes and preferably genetics. After completing the book you should be excited about the future of biotech, and you will have some understanding about how it works.
Good introductory material for the technical.......2001-05-11
To those who are interested in the functional aspects of the DNA this is the right introductory stuff. It covers areas including basic molecular biology to commercial methods for manipulating the genes. Pretty useful for someone who's more interested in the technology than the biology!
Good overview but lacks technical rigor.......2000-04-07
I am currently using this book for a course in Molecular Biotechnology taught through the chemistry department. Although the book covers a wide range of biotechnology fields, from manipulation of gene expression in prokaryotes and eukaryotes through human gene therapy, it does so in a somewhat shallow and repetitive way. I have also seen clearer and more concise diagrams covering similar topics in other biochemistry books, and there is a paucity of in-depth coverage in any particular area. This is not necessarily the authors's fault, however, arising from the plethora of information found in the biotechnology field. If someone wants a broad review of molecular biotechnology, this is a decent book, but if you want to focus on a specific area within biotechnology, look somewhere else.

Probablistic models are becoming increasingly important in analyzing the huge amount of data being produced by large-scale DNA-sequencing efforts such as the Human Genome Project. For example, hidden Markov models are used for analyzing biological sequences, linguistic-grammar-based probabilistic models for identifying RNA secondary structure, and probabilistic evolutionary models for inferring phylogenies of sequences from different organisms. This book gives a unified, up-to-date and self-contained account, with a Bayesian slant, of such methods, and more generally to probabilistic methods of sequence analysis. Written by an interdisciplinary team of authors, it is accessible to molecular biologists, computer scientists, and mathematicians with no formal knowledge of the other fields, and at the same time presents the state of the art in this new and important field.

A great reference and a good introduction to many important concepts in sequence analysis. However, if you don't have a reasonable grounding in math you may struggle with the terse notation.
Borodovsky's companion book is an excellent partner for this book. Get both.
One of the best available.......2007-08-17
Although this book is based primarily on work that was completed in 1998, and therefore somewhat out of date, it is the best book I have found for teaching bioinformatics. I selected this as the best of the available books on the subject for use in my bioinformatics and numerical methods course which is to be taught in the fall of 2007 at Univ. of Conn. This course is an upper division undergraduate and first year graduate course. That is roughly the level of this text and the comparative advantage of this book is the excellent presentation and thorough discussion of the algorithms. A student armed with Matlab or MathScriptor can take this book and start writing algorithms for sequence alignment and Hidden Markov Method (HMM) analysis after only the first three or four chapters. This book is in its 11th printing and is nearly error free (I found only a few in the figures). This book is strongly recommended for both students and researchers, particularly those interested in protein alignment, phylogenic analysis or an introduction to Hidden Markov Methods.

Truly an Excellent Book.......2006-02-18
I will agree and submit: this is an invaluable introduction to the field of bioinformatics. With introductions to everything from sequence analysis to hidden markov models and even a primer on grammars, this is a useful introduction both to biological applications for computer scientists *as well as* computational methods for biologists.
I am in a joint graduate-level biology/computer science class and we are using this book as a foundation to bring both groups up to speed and it seems to be working out nicely.
However, one criticism is that sometimes Durbin et al jump into subjects without an adequate introduction or with one that is overcomplexified. In other words, they sometimes break Einstein's the rule of "make everything as simple as possible but not simpler". Durbin et al do not always make things as simple as possible. And it is annoying when they do not. Especially when I see them confusing the bejebus out of the biology people over computer science concepts that are really not that complicated through overly technical jargon.
But this is rare and they provide many insightful diagrams to clear up their algorithms as well as lucid ways to introduce biological concepts. Sometimes the introduction of an algorithm/theory *and* a biological concept molds together beautifully such that the reader is simultaneously being infused with both. An example of this phenomenon is their dual introduction to CpG islands and markov models.
Excellent book ... a little boring to read ..........2005-09-30
I bought "Biological Sequence Analysis" for my introductory bioinformatics course. AS the course covers almost everything mentioned in the book I have (almost) finished reading and studying it.
I find this book an excellent textbook but wouldn't consider it a classic. There are some important topics missing or some topics are just briefly touched upon. (e.g. heuristic pairwaise alignment) Maybe it's just because of my theoretical background, but I find that the book does a poor job in explaining/proving the intuition behind certain aspects of the algorithms (e.d. why does a convex gap penalty lead to a different complexity than a strictly increasing gap penalty ...) . On the other hand, the probabilistic foundations of the different techniques is well written.
My final remark is that the book is not fun to read at all. The authors have made no effort to spice up the content with some historical background, some explanations of how the theory fits in the bigger picture ...
Summarized: an excellent textbook for anyone taking a course in bioinformatics but do not use this book to wet your appetite for the field ...

I consider molecular and cell biology an excellent review book for people who want an introduction of the field. Also it can help readers who want to refresh their knowledge. It is well organized, in fourteen different chapters, with multilple review questions and answers in each of them. I found the coverage of each chapter comprehensive. Objective questions at the end of each chapter helped to assess your level of understanding. I certainly recommend this book to people who study biological related sciences.

Absolutely Terrific.......2004-04-13
This text is just really great. The choice of words that go into the explanations are top notch. This was the requred textbook in my recombinant DNA course.
It is written by biologists for biologists; very technical very exact; again just absolutely terrific for both review and in depth understanding.
The only downfall I would say is that the Index isn't as good as it could be, but other than that I think every biology graduate student should own it....yeah its that good IMHO.
Pretty good content, although sometimes not well written.......2003-02-28
A very good book under the point of view of the content. A student facing the field for the first time will enjoy the "historical" overview given in the first half of the book, whereas those with more experience will still appreciate the description of the latest technologies.
However, the book has been written by several "hands" and could have used better editing: there are way too many repetitions and redundancies. Syntax-wise, sometimes the odd sentence is pretty obscure, too.
Excellent overview of a very exciting field.......2002-05-19
Certainly one of the most exciting developments in the last quarter century, genetic engineering is also one of the most controversial, and discussions of it are typically accompanied by vehemence and exaggerations. An objective study of genetic engineering is thus mandatory for everyone in the 21st century. This book is one of the best treatments of genetic engineering that I have read, and I am speaking not as a biologist but as someone actively involved in bioinformatics and computational biology. The explanations of the techniques of genetic engineering are excellent and the reader with a fairly good background in biochemistry should have no problem following the presentation. Readers without such a background will find the reading a little more demanding. One can only admire the ingenuity of the many researchers and technicians who have developed these techniques. The only thing missing in the book are exercises at the end of each chapter to test the readers understanding of the relevant concepts.
The last five chapters of the book are the most interesting ,for it is in these chapters that the authors discuss the genetic manipulation of animals, transgenic strategies, and biotechnology. We are all priveleged to be witnessing the development of new breeds of plants and animals, and hopefully this trend will continue in the 21st century. The impact of genetic engineering for medicine and agriculture will be immense, but even more mundance activities such as gardening and horticulture will be even more interesting with the development of new kinds of plants via transgenic strategies. In addition, genetic engineering is finding applications to areas outside of biology. It was recently reported that genetically engineered viruses are being used to assist in the development of quantum dots in microelectronics.
Some of the features of the book I found particularly helpful or interesting were: 1. The numerous diagrams employed in the book that tie concepts together or give flow charts for laboratory procedures. 2. The discussion on the physics of gel electrophoresis. Apparently the dynamics of stained molecules undergoing electrophoresis is poorly understood. 3. The historical and anecdotal information that the authors include at various places in the book. 4. The discussion on optimizing translation. The degeneracy of the genetic code might lead one to believe that the choice of codons by genes is essentially a random process. The authors argue this is not the case and give excellent references for further reading on this. Apparently protein translation is a tight scheme, and again, this is surprising given the degeneracy of the genetic code. 5. The box on express sequence tags. The most interesting part of this discussion was on the legal issues involving the patenting of ESTs. The patent applications were rejected because ESTs were viewed as incomplete sequences. This rejection might serve as a precedent to future attempts to patent genes or complete genomes. Will some of these patents be rejected on the grounds that genes do not completely determine the protein(s) or phenotype(s)? Whatever the outcome, the legal profession in the 21st century will have to deal with information-theoretic criteria when addressing patent issues in genetic engineering. 6. The listing of the Internet tools available for gene sequencing and protein structure. 7. The discussion on the quantitative effect of sequence accuracy on gene accuracy, assuming the random occurence of sequencing errors. The diagram shown of average sequence-error rate versus the fraction of error-free genes shows clearly the importance of robust and precise sequence-similarity search algorithms. Interestingly, the authors argue that, in spite of the success of statistical methods in these algorithms, the use of these methods will decrease as new sequences are accumulated and sequence conservation is used as the criterion for gene identification. They do however state that these methods will still remain useful for localizing frame shifts and for the choice of the initiation codon. 8. The box on the modes of replication of circular DNA molecules. The biophysicist reader will appreciate the discussion on the two types of replication: by theta-like structures or the rolling-circle type of mechanism. 9. The discussion on applications of transgenic mice, position effects, and transgene silencing. The authors discussion of the efficacy of transgenic strategies in mice progeny is fascinating in that some mice progeny has expression that was very different from that of the parents, or even absent. The authors give a brief discussion of boundary elements and matrix attachment regions with references for further reading. 10. The short discussion on transgenic fish. 11. The box on control of transgene expression in plants. 12. The discussion on the use of immunosuppressant drugs as chemical inducers of dimerization. The side effects of these drugs has prompted research into finding transgene induction strategies that do not have these side-effects. 13. The discussion on post-translational inducible protein activity. 13. The discussion on visible marker genes, especially the discussion on green flourescent protein. 15. The discussion on the use of antisense RNA to regulate gene expression in prokaryotes. 16. The discussion on the use of cosuppression in increasing the amount of pigment synthesized by petunia flowers. The application of transgenic strategies to horticulture is indeed exciting and one that will hopefully result in new varieties of houseplants and garden fruits and vegetables. 17. The discussion on the role of functional genomics. 18. Transgenic animals and plants as bioreactors: Tracy and her progeny in producing AAT. 19. Xenotransplantation. This is no doubt one of the most controversial techniques used in genetic engineering today.

This book badly needs revision.......2002-03-20
The material in the introductory text preceeding most of the exercizes lacks clarity, is poorly written and sadly confuses the reader. The introduction to the lux operon seems to be a very good example to illustrate the point. This book was made possible by a grant from the NSF and if the authors continue to market this book without revision it would be just be a travesty and an insult to intelligence. Please take note of the shortcomings of this book before decinding to buy it.

This book is written at an advanced undergraduate level, assuming a basic knowledge of molecular biology and genetics but no knowledge of recombinant DNA technology or genomics. At the same time the book is organized in such amanner that a researcher already working in this general field might be able to quickly find an area where they need refreshing or up to date information.
The book begins with a historical review of research into genes and how the present day technologies came about. This information has been selected so that the student will have an understanding of how today's technology has evolved. It is a short history, and does not go into the many paths that led to procedures that are no longer in use.
This book is now in its seventh edition with a new edition coming out every 4 to 5 years since the original publication in 1980. As such, the book is up to date as of the state of the technology about the end of 2005.

The State of the Art as of Late 2006.......2007-03-07
This book describes a series of protocols that offer ways to deliver genes into mammalian cells. About half the book describes viral techniques where a virus is used to do the transport and delivery. The other half describes non-viral methods. The book has some 75 different techniques, each described by a researcher who has been using/developing that method.
Note that many of these techniques are brand new and still in the stage of being developed. Some of them are likely to prove useful, others will be of limited use, perhaps in a niche application or will simply lead to better techniques later on.
Dr. Rossi (Bechmann Research Institute) and Dr. Friedmann (UCSD) serve as editors of the book. It is called a Laboratory Manual as the protocols are presented in a stepwise, 'cookbook' style.
The book was published in early 2007 and should be considered an accurate reflection of the state of the art as of late in 2006.

DNA-chip analysis has come a long way since the first conference in Moscow in 1991. Nowadays, DNA-microarrays seem to be a common commodity in biological sciences. The complexity hidden behind the apparent ease of such studies, however, is highlighted by the fact that it took about ten years before the methodology really set off. Also, on closer scrutiny, one realises that some problems still remain. Nevertheless, microarrays produce data on a scale beyond imagination a few years ago.
