2 out of 5 stars Future test taker you might wanna read this.......2007-01-22

I took my Biology GRE last November (2006). I got my score like a month ago and I was very disappointed. If you read the reviews for the new edition you'll find one reviewer talking about this book needs to be revised. And all I'm gonna tell you is he/she is 110% correct.
If you are taking the test in April or later, consider NOT buying this book. I used this book, the Princeton review book and Campbell to study for the test. And I didn't get a 90 percentile or above, which totally enraged me since it felt like everything that was in this book was not on the test (I focused very much on the topics found in this book). I can't reveal the exact questions but let me just describe the kind of problems on the test (I bet future test takers would be curious). The most shocking question on the test I took must be the one where it mixed reproductive organs (anatomy) with evolutionary biology. There were 5 consecutive problems dealing with history stuff like when did this go extinct and when did that originated. It was just painful for me since I'm a big cell and molecular person. There were even matching problems where the student was supposed to match up the name of a specific gene (I mean very specific, at least that's what I thought) with its function or responsible disease or symptoms or body structure.
Honestly I was quite devastated by the difficulty of the test, especially it felt like everything I studied did not show up on the test. If you're from Harvard or Yale or whatever, don't even bother studying because you're the people who get the 99 percentile. But for the rest of us (well excluding me), study your Campbell Biology textbook. And be sure to cover everything in the book. You'll be surprised when you see problems that you absolutely don't have a clue on the test.

4 out of 5 stars Good source but not definitive.......2007-01-04

This books helped tremendously but the test requires A LOT of knowledge. So I think it's best viewed as one source to look at. That being said if you don't have much time, read this in it's entirety and you'll be fine.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BUY.......2006-04-02

I waited till 3 days before the GRE bio to prepare. I did it by reading this book. The stuff in this book very closely aligns with what is on the test. As long as you know your stuff and paid attention in class it offers just enough detail of a review to jog all your memories.

In fact, some of the exact questions the GRE exam asked on test day were little factoids contained in this book.

I do not know my score yet (just took the test this morning) but I have a gut feeling I did good.

So in summation: buy this book and no other! I did not even read a general bio textbook; I think that if you basically know your stuff already the kaplan guide is all you are gonna need .

I found the plant info and info on evolution very helpful

4 out of 5 stars Good tool for test prep.......2006-01-04

I found that Kaplan's bio GRE review book accurately represented the contents of the test. It gives a good review of the material covered on the GRE (although with a few minor errors) and the practice test was very similar in content, structure, and difficulty to the real one.
Update: I just got my scores back, and I stand by my review :) an excellent buy, it was definitely worth it.

3 out of 5 stars OK Book, Besides Freshman Biology! .......2005-12-01

I just took the GRE Bio Subject test in November. I used Kaplan, the test booklet produced by ETS, Princeton Review Cracking the GRE and my Campbell's Biology from freshman Biology in college. Of all books, I found the Campbells Biology the most helpful. Second was Kaplan. Check out my review for P. Review book, because the vocab list at the back was very helpful, and so was the practice test, but the rest of that book was worse than terrible. I am not sure of my score yet, but I know that many things I studied were on this test, it was a typical rehash of all that nit picky stuff like the difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic flagella to the intricate details of sarcomeres.

Oh, and the structure of the test, I didn't know it until I took some practice tests -- either it's not explicit in any of these books or I just passed over it. It's 110 multi choice questions first, then 30 or so of questions that you have to choose the correct word for each statement, then 50ish questions on several charts and experiments. The last section takes the longest, the choose-word questions go very fast and the multi choice is where you can really gain time if you study these darn books for tricky questions regarding the mesophyll of plants etc that would otherwise take up time trying to eliminate and choose the best answer. If you can know the multiple choice quickly and solid, you'll have plenty of time for the charts etc.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best GRE Subject Books For Biology Majors Who Want To Score High.......2007-09-07

This is one of the best GRE subject books for any person trying to score high on the GRE exam in Biology. It covers everything you need to know in detail. The illustrations, the diagrams, the graphs, the charts, are all very helpful too. They even show you some basic math to help you understand everything better and for it to make sense for you. It has three sections Cellular and Molecular Biology, Organismal Biology, and Ecology and Evolution. I could not put it down it was so helpful and I understood everything that they wrote down. This book is very specific and as mentioned above and thorougly explains everything without you saying this is too much. There are about 14-15 practice questions at the end of each section and the answers are explained fully. The end of the book there are 200 questions that cover everything that you read in the book and the answers are again fully explained at the end. I am not a good multiple choice test taker but after reading about 10 pages on a certain topic I answered the question correctly at the end. I highly recommend this book you will definately score higher on the GRE subject. Even if you are not a good test taker you will most likely get a higher score! The book might I add is interesting to read too and is very thought provoking.

4 out of 5 stars buy any version you want.......2006-12-22

You might as well buy any version you want for a test you will take soon, but I did find this book very helpful for reviewing without much time to do so. The situation will change when the test goes electronic, however. In that case the old versions will likely be obsolete.

3 out of 5 stars Needs a revision.......2006-09-10

After taking the exam in December 2006, you would be better off buying and reviewing the latest version of Campbell Reece 'Biology' textbook to study for the GRE Biology Exam. This Kaplan book needs a revision as it is misrepresenting a lot of the information that was presented on the exam.

I would say that this book is good reference for a high school biology teacher.

5 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY!!!!.......2006-08-27

For those of you who are considering taking the Biology GRE subject test, please do not buy this version. It is virtually the same at the older (2nd) edition which is a lot cheaper than this one. Don't be fooled by Kaplan and the so-called 2007-2008 edition. I repeat, this version is virtually the same as the previous edition. The only reason I'm giving this book a 5 stars is because it is indeed an excellent book for preparing the subject test. Peace.

1 out of 5 stars Rudmans Biochem GRE .......2007-10-08

This is a terrible, terrible book. The questions are either far too simple, suited for a biology GRE or completely worthless: What was the name of the chimpanzee that spent 38 years with Jane Goodall? If anyone can explain how that relates to biochem, cell or molecular biology, I will eat the book. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK! ABSOLUTLEY WORTHLESS!

1 out of 5 stars the content is totally unrelated to the GRE.......2007-01-28

The book's content is totally unrelated to the GRE, and moreover, I checked the library and found different copyright dates for the same edition of the same exact title.

1 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS BOOK.......2006-12-04

I agree with everyone else who said not to buy this book. It offers no suggestions on the test and is just a bunch of questions. It is absolutely worthless. The only reason i bought it was because it was the only one available at the time. Download the free practice test and outline from the GRE website and you will certainly do better than if you wasted your money on this.

2 out of 5 stars Irrelevant to the real GRE Biochem test.......2001-12-17

I do not recomment this book, after I glanced through it I never touched it again; it will neither help you learn something, nor give you any idea what the real test is. Buy ETS book to get the idea of what kind of questions occur on the test, and prepare for the test using several big textbooks on these three subjects as well as your lecture notes.

1 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS BOOK.......1999-10-12

This book contains a ton of useless information that will not help you at all in studying for the subject test.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Explains clearly but doesn't include all subjects fully.......2006-06-14

The book is easy to read and gives background information and a general review but does not cover all topics, although it did mention some subjects not included in the Kaplan book. I think if used with proper review material to expand on the subjects mentioned it is useful.

2 out of 5 stars Vocab List is Worth a Look and P. Test is Helpful.......2005-12-01

Barring the Hugh Grant look-alike on the front, I first thought this book was nearly worthless. Then I looked at the vocab list and took the practice test -- they were both very helpful. It's too bad the rest of the book is sinfully shoddy, made on cheap newspaper, all black and white type -- if you didn't learn it in Freshman Biology with the color photos and CD-ROMS and 3D glasses and cattle-prod or whatever they use now, then cheap newspaper and crummy drawings won't help now.

If you're trying to save money, you could just go to a book-store and copy the vocab list at the back. See if you like the p. test, you might buy the whole book (esp at the price Amazon has now -- I paid almost 30$ for it from a regular bookstore). But do get that vocab list -- it's about 30 words that were all over the test, words nobody in their right mind would know unless they knew it would be on a test.

The practice test was helpful because UNLIKE ETS, the Princeton Review p. test gives explanations for all the answers and I did learn a couple of terms/ideas that were on the test from which I benefitted by going through answer explanations and correcting my test.

    Book Description

The Princeton Review realizes that acing the GRE Biology Test is very different from getting straight A’s in school. We don't try to teach you everything there is to know about biology–only the techniques you'll need to score higher on the test. There's a big difference. In Cracking the GRE Biology Test, we'll teach you how to think like the test writers and

·Eliminate answer choices that look right but are planted to fool you
·Be better prepared by focusing on the material most likely to appear on the test
·Sharpen your skills with our GRE Biology Lab
·Score higher by mastering Word Watch, our list of terms that frequently appear on the test

This book includes one full-length practice GRE Biology Test. All of our practice questions are like the ones you’ll see on the actual GRE Biology Test, and we fully explain every solution.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars too general, biased test.......2000-11-11

I got this book because it was the most recently published, so I figured that it would have the best review material that encompassed the most relevant subjects on the test. Unfortunately, after taking the practice test included in the book, the practice test offered by ETS, and the real subject test last weekend, I found it to be a pretty poor indicator of what actually showed up on the test. The only thing the review in the book is good for is to give an outline of things you need to know to take the test. I actually used an MCAT study aid to review most of the material, which was a lot more detailed, and a lot more helpful. What's worse is that this book makes you think you're actually learning a lot, when it's really just skimming over a lot of different topics, leaving out a lot of the detail. When I took the practice test, I realized that it was extremely biased towards what the book reviewed so that when you scored yourself, your score would be a lot higher than it should be. Overall, this book could only be used as a general study guide and the test gives you little idea of what the test is really like. The one redeeming thing about this book is that the answers to the tests come with detailed explanations, which I found pretty helpful.

    1 out of 5 stars bad........2000-11-04

I was pertty worried about the "thinness" of this book when it arrived - well, well well. GRE is a pretty comprehensive exam, and the questions can be pretty picky. If you were to take the actual exam just on the basis of knowledge from this book, you're pretty hosed up. It would have been better for you to just drag out your introductory bio textbook and look through the figures there, that would be much more helpful. I actually bought an official bio study guide from ETS as well, and I found something funny. The simulation test that they have in Cracking the GRE... is pretty much the same as the old exam in the ETS book, with only a slight modification! I guess they could have done it in one of two ways - one, drill-type book, a question after question, whereby you can train yourself to any type of problems imaginable. Two, they could have made it like a small dictionary/reference type of book which emcompasses must-know stuff, condensed version of textbook, if you like. They tried to make this book to do both of these - bluntly, they weren't successful. I personaly didn't like the way they write the book (this can be said to the general test prep book as well), too casual sounding hey-I'm-your-buddy tone of voice, and the way they waste pages and pages by using a large font (with a bunch of typos!) and taking SO MUCH space in answer key pages....

3 out of 5 stars Reasonably OK, but not enough for 90%+ scores.......2000-01-27

This book is all right--unmarred by the egregious errors and typos that characterize most of the GRE Bio test preparation texts currently on the market. However, it's insufficient if you're trying to achieve really high scores. For that, I recommend the book put out by ETS (Amazon sells it). I found that to be the only practice test that strongly resembled the actual test.

As background, I took the GRE Biology Subject Exam in December 1999, and scored in the upper 97% (if that makes any difference.) I personally found the ETS practice tests the most useful study aid, in conjunction with textbooks Campbell's Biology and Molecular Biology of the Cell by Alberts, et al. This book was a distant fourth, but those whose Bio is quite rusty, or whose scoring goals are more modest, might be quite pleased with it. (The other review books I used--the Barron's book and the one by Ogden--were a waste of time and money.)

    4 out of 5 stars GRE Biology.......1999-12-12

It's hard to be enthusiastic about a test study guide, but this one does seem to provide a nice, concise (though basic) review. If it's been a while since you've had some of your basic biology course work, this may be a help, or may at least ease your mind a bit.

2 out of 5 stars Decent source of GRE-like questions.......2007-10-07

Ignore the review portion of this book, because it's so riddled with errors, omissions, and half-truths that it's likely to hurt your score. (Some blatant examples: On page 12, in the table of amino acid properties and structures, Asn and Gln have the same structure. Also, Figure 2.6 (Oxidation of an Aldose...) and Figure 2.15 (Negative Feedback Inhibition...) are exactly the same. That's when I stopped reading.)

However, it's worth buying a used copy just for the three practice tests/worked answers in the back. While these tests don't follow the standard GRE Biology format, the questions cover the material you're likely to see on the exam, and there seem to be fewer errors in this part of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Useful with other similar guides.......2006-06-04

It is always a good idea to use several guides for GRE and similar tests preparation. This is one them. It becomes useful only when you study it along other test guides available in the market.

2 out of 5 stars Full of egregious errors.......2006-03-28

    1. Page 17. Isoleucine is wrong. The methyl group goes on the other side. It looks like you are showing L-allo-isoleucine, which does not, to my knowledge, occur in biology.
    2. Page 17. Threonine is completely wrong. It has a methyl, not an ethyl group built on Serine. You show it having 5 carbons when it has 4.
    3. Page 19. Histidine is wrong. The CH2 off the central carbon of the amino-carboxyl end is shown attached to the wrong carbon atom in the pent-ring. They are showing a nonbiological isomer.
    4. Page 28. List of essential amino acids is wrong. List leaves out Arginine. List doesn't even agree with the count in the paragraph. The correct number is 9, with 10 for infants.
    5. Page 36. Shows Pyruvate Kinase as the end step. It's the enzyme, and Pyruvate is the product.
    6. Page 36. Dihydroxyacetone, not diydroxyacetane.
    7. Page 36. Dihydroxyacetone phosphate, not just dihydroxyacetone.
    9. Page 36. Phosphoenolpyruvate, not phosphoenalpyruvate.

That's as far as I've read in detail so far. Forgive me, but this book looks thrown together in pretty slapdash fashion. I suppose it's a bit amusing to be kept on ones toes while reviewing material by looking for errors, but I hope nobody is expecting this book to be correct.

1 out of 5 stars WORST review book........2004-12-06

This was far and away the absolute worst review book I have ever seen for anything. It was full of poorly worded questions with even worse answer explanations. Tons of spelling and grammatical errors and other mistakes, like an answer being listed with the wrong letter. Is the letter or the answer correct? Who knows? These people need an editor, or need to go back to grade school. I can't believe they publish this book without spell checking it. Very frustrating to attempt to study out of this. Completely useless and a waste of valuable study time.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible horrible horrible book.......2004-11-12

I don't even know where to begin with this book. Its written in granny print so just because the book looks huge and full of information its because the font is big enough for you to read from 10 feet away. Has very little information and this is evident when you start taking the "practice" exams in the back of the book. Sure they explain the answers but you wouldn't be able to find any of them in their so called "comprehensive" review. The practice tests are full of spelling, grammar, and answer errors. The tests don't even closely resemble the format of the GRE practice book. In the practice book from ETS there are approximately 40 questions based on data analysis, the tests in this study book contain 4. This book was a rip-off. Shame on the publisher for releasing such an unrefined piece of crap.

5 out of 5 stars Not the same test edition as the free online ETS test.......2005-03-09

Many of you probably know that ETS.org has free PDF versions of its GRE exams, including the subject tests like Biology. However, the test guides that were published and are now out of print contain DIFFERENT exam questions. So if you can get one, it's still worth your while.

Disclaimer: I'm selling my copy, so a review encouraging you to buy this book could be considered a conflict of interest! :)

5 out of 5 stars How can you not buy the official guide?.......2001-06-05

I was a chemical engineering major in college and after a few years out of school, I decided to go to graduate school for a PhD in molecular biology. Being that I had no formal education in biology whatsoever, I decided to take the biology test rather than the biochemistry because I think it's a much easier test to study for from ground zero (and I was right). I had no idea what to expect from the test, so this book helped a lot to demystify it. I knew what type of questions were asked and whatever I didn't understand, I would look it up in a textbook or on the web (you'd be surprised how much biology one can learn on the web, so many colleges put up study guides and reviews for their students and everyone can have access to them). What's the point of studying for the test, if you don't practice on the official version? On the real test, I actually saw some of the same questions. They actually recycle questions, just posed in slightly different ways. I only study using this guide and the Princeton Review guide (and supplemented with textbooks here and there), and I got a decent enough score to get me into three graudate schools in NYC, including Columbia, NYU and Albert Einstein. I couldn't have done it without this book. This is NOT an endorsement of ETS, by the way, I think ETS is one of the most evil empires ever created on earth and I think the government should shut them down because they are an unfair monopoly with no real consumer or educational value. ETS is the biggest scam that was ever invented. I'm endorsing this book because you have to learn the system to beat the system.

4 out of 5 stars This was the most useful aid I found.......2000-01-27

I took the GRE Biology Subject Exam 12/1999, and prepared for it using every single GRE Bio test preparation book I could find (about 5.) This was the most useful of them all, because it provided the only really accurate representation of what the exam was actually like. It is only one full sample exam and one partial sample exam and doesn't provide any review material per se, but it is well worth taking as practice, and then even more useful if you go back over the questions you missed, and review or teach yourself the pertinent subject material from standard text books. It seemed pretty obvious to me that Campbell's Biology and The Molecular Biology of the Cell by Alberts, et al, were two major sources for the test questions. Some of the questions on the practice exam covered material that my college Biology and Biochemistry courses didn't address. For example, I was confronted with population equations I had never seen before, but turned out to be in a previously unread chapter in my Campbell's text. Learning that, and other new material the practice test exposed me to, proved invaluable on test day. If it makes any difference, I scored in the upper 97%. If your goal is to score 90% and above, I strongly recommend this book. On the other hand, if your Bio knowledge is very rusty and you need extensive review material, or you have more modest scoring goals, Cracking the GRE Biology Exam by Deborah Guest was reasonably OK, but not broad enough in scope to result in top scores. The other review books I used were really pretty bad and a waste of time and money. They were so poorly written, using material so far removed from the content of the actual test, I honestly began to feel I could write a better review book myself. Maybe I should.
