Great Non-majors Book.......2006-04-16
This book is in its 8th Edition with two new authors. The style continues the high standards set in the previous edition. I find this book to be a very good quick reference guide for chemical reactions, stoichiometry, organic and biological chemistry. I am very sad to see that Bettelheim and March have passed away!

Book Description
Glycostructures play a highly diverse and crucial role in a myriad of organisms and important systems in biology, physiology, medicine, bioengineering and technology. Only in recent years have the tools been developed to partly understand the highly complex functions and the chemistry behind them, but many facts still remain undiscovered. "All roads lead to carbohydrates ... we cannot do without them." (K.C. Nicolaou). Presently the field is experiencing a "quantum jump". Therefore the editors have drawn together in this three volume set plus an accompanying CD-ROM, the complete and up-to-date information on glycostructures, their chemistry and chemical biology, and present them in the form of a comprehensive and strictly systematic survey. The texts are furnished by 2.670 figures, chemical structures and reaction schemes (including more than 12.000 individual chemical reactions), and more than 9.000 references.

the best biochemistry textbook for the post-genomic era.......2007-03-13
In this book you find classical biochemistry, and a lot of it. In contrast to most other biochemistry textbooks which drift away from the topic and go more and more into cell biology, immunology and the like, Metzler concentrates on the central topics of biochemistry, the enzymes and their mechanisms. There is no other book where one is more likely to find detailled infomation on the structure-function relation of just about any enzyme (with the only downside of having only black-and-white pictures, even for structures). This book is, however, to be treated with caution: it is not covering the topics of most biochem beginners courses (or is providing too much information that is about to overwhelm inexperienced readers, respectively). Still, it will be an unavoidable desk reference to any biochemist who cares about enzymes and will be highly valuable at least as long as the previous edition from 1977.
A terrible textbook to study biochemistry .......2006-12-21
The book is horrible! I used many textbooks to teach students biochemistry: Voet, Stryer, Lehninger, Devlin and others. Voet's Biochemistry although too detailed in some places is good for chemistry majors, but is a nightmare for medical students for which Stryer and Lehninger is great. In all tasks these books are better then Metzler.
Metzler's Biochemistry is simply overwhelming. You will hate it if:
- you are medical student or just a novice in the field. What's the point in reading a whole page about "Does lysozyme distort its substrate?" or next 5 pages about xylanases, hemicelluloses, galactanase, glucocerebrosidase..? Though if you know organic chemistry inside out you'll find 300 pages of bioorganic chemistry quite a good review (of what you probably already know).
- you are a graduate student in biochemistry and need a reference. Get something else. For example, speeking about proteases and phosphatase Metzler mostly enumatates some thirty enzymes, but gives the details for only a few. In this book you'll find excessive treatment of one thing on 50 pages and a brief mentioning of 100 things on the next 50 pages.
To sum up I'd like to say that this book is good for a professional biochemist who likes reading encyclopedias before going to bed or wants to expend his/her knowledge in bioorganic chemistry.
You've got to bear in mind that it weighs 16 pounds and trust me you'll never want to take it any where from your shelf (unless you are fond of powerlifting). Such books like dinosaurs will either get extinct or be covered with dust in the library.
Book Description
NMS Biochemistry, Fourth Edition, is designed to help medical students successfully complete a course in biochemistry and prepare for USMLE Step 1. This new edition has been significantly updated, and extensively rewritten to emphasize medical relevance.
Customer Reviews:
made me love biochemistry.......2002-07-05
throughout my stay in med school, I never understood why I must be subjected to all those biochemical details. I was aware, of course, that I needed to understand the basic chemical processes that affected the human body, but I couldn't find any reason why my professors would treat medical students as if they were biochem majors. Boy, was I glad when the biochemistry class was over, and I passed the darn course!
I was to meet this same course a few years ago, when I had to sit for the USMLE I. Like a sick child who must swallow a bitter tablet, I reluctantly began to study biochem. Again.
It was a very pleasant surprise that the course was really interesting. I mean, I enjoyed it as much as I did physiology (and I always loved physiology!).
I realized that I came to love biochem because of this book. The authors knew how to give you solid biochemical reasons for those familiar clinical conditions. Contrary to my previous experiences in med school, I found out that biochemistry is indeed a very interesting vourse.
The only (small) problem that you may find with this book is, it could be too detailed at times. However, it covers the USMLE topics quite well. If you have read Kaplan's materials, you'd agree that there are very many similarities. I read both.
If you want to use it for the USMLE I exam, I suggest you first read the specific topics required for the exam. Afterwards, you may then the other areas that are not vital for the exam, if you are interested, and you have the extra time.
I wish I had this book much earlier. It's really nice.
Good biochemistry review in outline form.......1997-08-17
This is a good review book for medical school. It offers great depth and details to the subject of biochemistry albeit it lacks the illustration and color of textbooks. The book is written in an outline form, so reading a chapter of Davidson's Biochemistry can be tedious; but then, there are those who like to study that way
Customer Reviews:
Good reference for non-chemists.......2005-06-15
As a physics graduate student interested in biophysics research, I found this text an invaluable resource. I had intro chemistry as an undergrad and AP bio in high school, but no organic chemistry or any other background. This text contained a clear introduction to biochemistry and described a lot of the techniques I was reading about in scientific papers in language that a non-chemist could understand. I still refer back to it frequently.
Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry is simply the best one........2004-05-10
The Lehninger Princicples of Biochemistry is the best book in biochemistry that has been written. I have use it in my biochemistry course in my first year in school medicine and thanks to this book I pass my class with one of the best notes in the group. Any other book exposes the biochemistry principles with clarity and coherence like the Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry. I can't wait for the 4th edition.
Good book for biochemistry.......2004-02-15
This book is complete and thorough in explaing every energy pathway (Kreb's cycle, electron transport system, glycolysis, etc.) The diagrams are helpful and explain the material with visual detail especially in this type of book. The only thing, the book is somewhat hard to understand for reading it the first time. I know biochemistry is a hard subject, but I thought it could be explained in a little easier fashion. However, other than that, the book is quite organized and a must buy for every chiropractic student taking biochemistry. I also highly recommend:
National Board of Chiropractic Part I Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
Both these books I found very helpful for studying for the National boards. The text is a must for studying for the biochemistry part of the chiro boards.
Excellent! Can't wait for the Next Edition!.......2004-01-24
If you are a undergraduate or a graduate student who needs to learn some biochemistry from the ground up (without an instructor), this is the text for you. Lehninger really outdoes himself by creating a Biochemistry textbook that's not only colorful and pretty to look at but also wonderfully written. Of all of the science textbooks I've had to read to date, this was the best! Lehninger really does write the text so that it's like reading a novel, which allows for maximum absorption of the material he covers. Occasionally, I hit spots in my reading which were harder to understand, but that was because my own ignorance and not his. He begins the text with a review of the basics of general chemistry and organic chemistry which come into play with the biochemistry subject matter. Then he continues on, developing the student's foundations with describing protein structure and protein function, working his way up with enzymatic properties and activities. Carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids come next. The last section of the book is devoted to biochemical mechanisms, which is alot, but it is covered adequately for a beginner's textbook. The only major drawback: many of the answers to the chapter questions are wrong, hopefully, this will be addressed in the 4th Ed. If your school doesn't use Lehninger, protest, write treatises, do anything to convince your Biochemistry professor to use this text to teach you biochemisty! It's expensive, but once you have this textbook, don't ever sell it because if you're going into chemistry or biochemistry, it will be a priceless resource for your future studies!
Two thumbs way up.......2003-06-14
This book is one of the best biochemistry available. It presents an extensive amount of valuable concepts and information a highly readable manner. I used this text as an undergraduate and even as a gradduate student I find it impossible to part with it. The understanding biochemistry CD that is included with the book is also an excellent tool for revision. I found that the retention of information and ease of understanding is higher when the book is used in conjunction with the CD. It comes highly recommended for any serious students of biochemistry and as an invaluable reference.

Book Description
Over the years Bettelheim,Brown, and March's INTRODUCTION TO GENERAL, ORGANIC AND BIOCHEMISTRY has become the most respected and best-selling General, Organic and Biochemistry (GOB) textbook on the market. Known for the successful way it meets the needs of students who take this course--from re-entry students to those heading directly into careers in the allied health fields--the book is acclaimed for the way it provides students a solid chemistry foundation that will serve them well long after they leave the course. In this edition, the authors continue the hallmarks that have made their book a classic in the field: a pedagogically rich learning framework; a wide variety of medical and biological applications; a visually dynamic art program, innovative "Chemical Connections" essays that focus on current issues in general organic, and biochemistry; and exceptionally strong and varied end-of-chapter problems. At the same time, they have extended their student focus by providing a greatly expanded interactive CD-ROM, as well as a new "Career Corner" portion on the Book Companion Web site designed to help students make the connections between the chemistry they are learning today and their future careers. This edition gives students a solid foundation of the chemistry of the human body, consistently demonstrating that a strong background in molecular structure and properties leads to better understanding of biochemical interactions. The strength of this book is its readability, its application to normal human biochemical pathways, as well as discussing biochemical conditions present in diseases. The authors provide a unified view of chemistry, frequently using organic and biological substances to illustrate principles of general chemistry.
Customer Reviews:
Very helpful.......2007-01-13
I bought this book to use to teach myself fundamentals of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry becuase I had not taken them as an undergraduate student and needed to know the fundamentals for post-graduate work. I have found this text very helpful and relatively easy to follow as for as text books go. The progression of lessons from section to section is excellent. It is a lot of information jammed into one text, but done well.
Great book but so many errors and typos.......2006-02-15
I had to buy this book for a college chemistry course. The book is well written with plenty of examples and (mostly) good explanations.
When I first read the reviews I have to admit I was wary of the reviewer who said there were many errors and typos. But now that I have the book and have been through 5 chapters, I can't believe how many mistakes there are. It can make things very confusing.
A definition for one thing transposed with the definition of another! answers to example questions transposed with each other!
wrong answers in the back of the book! The book is indeed rife with errors.
The book could be a great one if these errors were addressed. If the publishers don't care about the mistakes, I should think the authors would.
I am very satisfied!.......2006-01-30
I was very satisfied with the service amazon.com provided for me. I had boughten a textbook and recieved it days before they said it would be delivered to me. Thank you amazon.com!
This book is a poor excuse for a College-level textbook.......2005-05-09
I am back in college, studying Organic chemistry. This book is a Seventh Edition, but wait, its rife with typos. Not just misspelled words, but errors in equations, answers in the back and other annoying things that you would think would be worked out by a SEVENTH EDITION. Did they hire and editor? Did he know how to do math? Did the author check his work? It is so poorly done. Its like an easter egg hunt in a mine field. We had to get chemistry for dummies to supplement it, because the text is unclear, and well, like an easter egg hunt. I found 3 typos in one chapter, and several typos all through the book. No one from Thompson Publishing would return a phone call, and the survey on the companion website: well that was just for fun, I guess. No one has responded to that either. I brought it to the attention of the department head at my college and he said he was unaware of any typos. I would not recommend the book, unless the publisher can publish a list of know typos and post them to the website.
Excellent Text For Allied Health.......2005-02-06
I used this book for a year-long course in chemistry as a nursing major. It is excellent for the clear and concise way topics are presented. It is also good because it provides numerous practical examples of how chemistry applies to allied health sciences. The section on biochemistry presents difficult topics in an easy fashion. At least one semester of Introductory Chemistry is assumed in order to use this book. An excellent book overall!
