Book Description

I believe we were put on this earth to enjoy lives of joy and abundance, and that is what I want for you and for me. It's not my intention to give people advice on how to solve their problems (I leave that to my husband). But I've had my share of struggles over the years, and I know a thing or two about what has worked for me. I have chosen to be an active participant in my life rather than a spectator, and in so doing I have chosen how to be a woman, how to be a wife, and how to be a mother in ways that are uniquely my own. I offer the stories of these choices as evidence of the power of sheer determination, will, and faith in God.

You've seen her on television with her husband, Dr. Phil. But now it's time for a heart-to-heart conversation with Robin McGraw. In Inside My Heart, Robin speaks woman to woman, inspiring you to embrace and celebrate the many roles you play and encouraging you to make deliberate choices that lead to a richer, happier, and more meaningful life.

She shares with you the life-changing moments of her childhood years, dating and marrying Dr. Phil McGraw, raising two sons, and asserting herself as a woman in a man's world to show you that you have the power to make choices in your life. In fact, she's convinced that you must choose to go after the life you want.

With a deep and abiding faith in God, Robin McGraw shares her story so you too can make choices that reflect your own heart's truest priorities and highest goals.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for every single and married women.......2007-10-07

Am half through this book, but yet I have found it very engaging in the way she shared her journey in life. I flipped and read briefly in the bookshop and decided to buy it before reading reviews in Amazon. I read negative comments and/or critics about the book structure, repeated messages she kept saying from the first chapter. But I disagreed with all these, this book is NOT a self help book, the topic is about choices she made in her life to become a person she is now. She didn't say it's the best choice for everyone but she showed how she got to that choice. It's not about a journal of her roles as a wife of a fairly famous person, but she shared with the reader many revealing moments in her life, either funny, sad and heartbreaking stories when she discovered a choice she believed and stick to it. I've been away from my parents' house since my twenties and after 10 years living far away from them and my siblings, I felt so close with the way I tried to live my life the best I can the way she did ((well not all the time sometimes). What I meant is to reflect every struggle in life as a lesson and how to react to it. I've been living fairly secured with my parents, afterwards living without pennies as a student, be in the lowest point in spirit and then joined this company where I have lived to the extent I've never ever imagined before but still deep inside I hold to the values I believe and those are values I carried from home till now. I truly believe her saying she hasn't changed much in terms of values from her childhood up to this point where she could write a book. As a single woman, I also found her comments on how she managed the relationships with Philips very helpful to understand and some even renew my own belief to see the thin line between loving other person and loving myself, when to hold it or just let it go. This is a great book for women who determine to keep looking for better choices in lives, in good and bad times. For some who just want to take easy road to feel as victims in life, then there would be a major work to see Robin's points.

AS much as I wanted to, I just couldn't get into this book...extremely repetitive....I was unable to continue reading...

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!.......2007-09-09

I love this book!! I'm not a big reader, but I couldn't put this book down. In this book she tells you her life story, and you realize she is just like the rest of us. She is an amazing woman and has such a positive attitude!

3 out of 5 stars Something To Be Said For Nice.......2007-09-03

There are times that I enjoy reading a book, and I read it quickly, and still, I cannot give it top marks. Inside My Heart by Robin McGraw, perhaps better known as wife to Dr. Phil, is one of those books. It is an easy read, one chapter leading into another, as we grow warm with empathy and curious about the life of this woman, arguably successful via her marriage more than for any particular accomplishment of her own. I've come to respect her husband's work (and I didn't initially, feeling he was riding on Oprah's coattails and reducing psychiatry to sound bites, yet after watching some of his shows and reading his columns in O Magazine, realized this man has pretty sound judgment about the quirks of human nature), and so, rather vicariously, became interested in what his wife had to say...

Robin has nothing new to say that we haven't already read in other women's inspirational and empowerment type of books. Nor am I clear on why a religious-based publisher like Nelson would have chosen to market her book in Christian circles and bookstores; there is very little mention in it about Robin's spiritual beliefs or influences on her life. And yet, I must admit, by the end of the book, I'd grown sympathetic to this woman, could imagine enjoying a personal friendship with someone like her, and give her my nod of respect for the life decisions she has made, and for her courageous value system. Ah yes, values. Something of which we are so achingly devoid in modern society. Robin makes sense of having them again. She writes about her approach to being a woman, a wife, a mother, a businesswoman, all based on well-defined and usually very traditional values. Husband Phil comes out pretty shiny and admirable, too, subscribing to the same values, as any good husband and father would and should. Even if we already know these values, we certainly can use reminders such as this. They work.

Nothing literary about this writing, reading more like a protracted magazine article than a soul-baring deep-diving personal expose. And the pull quotes are rather annoying every few pages, serving no purpose that I can see other than getting in the way of a smooth flow. But you know? I liked it. It's a nice book, with nice things to say, and perhaps it is time to fly the flag for the value of niceness again. I dare say we all secretly long for it.

    Book Description

The technical evolution of cardiac surgery in the last decades has been rewarded with long-term survival with few complications. A matching improvement in the quality of this survival as subjectively felt by the patient has now become most important to assess the justification of surgery.
This book is the summary of the proceedings of an international symposium which addressed the growing demand in this facet of cardiac surgery. For the first time quality of life after valve replacement, coronary bypass, surgery for congenital heart disease, and heart transplantation has been extensively analyzed in terms of the physiological state, intellectual functioning, emotional state, performance of social roles and general satisfaction. The patient's well-being has become the focus of a joint effort of cardiologists, surgeons, general practitioners, psychologists, sociologists and occupational physicians, for all of whom this book offers a guide to the improvement of our patients' `Quality of life after open heart surgery'.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-08-28

I really enjoyed reading the book, and I would recommend it to all serious software architects. The book discuss the practical aspects of OO techniques as they apply to real world applications. It goes beyond the "identify the words and nouns" approach of identifying objects and methods, into entities, value objects and aggregates. I also found the book to have a refreshing approach regarding XP methods, and the tight interdependence between modeling and design (and how each one feeds into the other in a closed loop).

2 out of 5 stars Heavy on ideas, light on implementation.......2007-08-22

This book presents some interesting ideas for data modeling and lifecycle management, but does not provide enough implementation details to turn those ideas into reality. Many people are attempting to do so, and their ideas turn up in the dozens with a Google search, but no one seems to have figured out a real-world implementation yet. I may have given this 4 or 5 stars if I was convinced that the ideas were practical. I assume Evans has implemented his own ideas before, so I'm left wondering why he's not sharing the code.

In particular, the Repository and Aggregate patterns interests me, but there are many problems that arise when trying to implement a Repository that can handle saving and updating entire Aggregates while keeping the Entities isolated from the persistence mechanism. This is a topic for a tech blog, and in searching the 'net, plenty of them are discussing it. No one seems to have answered the implementation question, though.

The book is also a bit repetitive and verbose. I didn't find the sections on ubiquitous language very helpful. Engineers and non-engineers don't approach problems the same way, common language or not. I didn't feel that added much to the technical design discussions that followed.

If I ever figure out a practical implementation of the ideas, I may come back and give the book another star.

5 out of 5 stars You must have one.......2007-06-21

This book was produced in 2004 but is already a classic. It is one of the most important books for people interested in object-oriented programming. Every programmer should read it.

5 out of 5 stars Domain Driven Design.......2007-03-15

Domain Driven Design is about naming and assigning responsibilities to your classes according to the real concepts in the real world and let them collaborate with each other to fulfill certain task, like you and your coworkers doing everyday. If you grasp this, your system will be much fun to work with. I have read the book once and I completely agree with what the author said in his book.

If you think it is difficult to understand the book, probably you need some prerequisite, for example, read < > first, or read < >, or read < >.

If you find no difficulty in understanding the above mentioned book, then you can start to read this one, from cover to cover. Relate the contents to the problem domain you are working on. You will find this book is well written and it helps you to write better software, the application not only works, but it is easy to be compiled by human brain as well.

I enjoy the reading of the book and it did help me. Well you can't count on one book, it is one of the books helped you.

4 out of 5 stars The book on domain-driven design.......2007-03-11

The reference on domain-driven design. A good book, but at times difficult to read and really get involved in. Takes a very high-level approach to design and doesn't discuss some implementation details of going down the domain model path. It took me some time to get through this book.

5 out of 5 stars The P&G Approach to Value Generalized.......2000-06-06

Delivering Profitable Value is an excellent look at ways to identify opportunities for making your products and services more valuable to customers. Unlike most books related to value which have little structure or focus to them, this one understands the importance of the ecosystem you use and in which your customer exists for delivering and using your offerings. One thing I liked was the series of steps the author proposes for comparing offerings available to customers.

The book uses lots of interesting examples, many of which are new to me. But each was easy to understand. It starts with a comparison of using an ATM and go to a human teller to point out the pros and cons of each.

I was particulary impressed by the discussion of the value proposition at Southwest Airlines. Only Nuts! and this book have a good description. Books by well-known academics are amazingly dense on that subject, as Mr. Lanning points out.

You also get some good information on advanced techniques for going beyond the limits of normal market research. This includes actually taking the time to become the customer or end user for your product or service, at the customer or end user's location. It also includes observing behavior with videos and following up with directed questions. Most companies use neither technique.

Mr. Lanning started out his career at P & G and has developed from that company's fine approach to marketing and innovation a more generalized way of thinking that can be used by almost any organization. That is well done.

His framework is robust in that it allows you to compare economic benefits (like a lower price, or being able to replace some labor in your manufacturing process) and noneconomic ones (like less stress) with competitive offerings.

This is a very well done book.

My only complaint is that he is so focused on the value proposition and improving it, that he pays little attention to the challenges of developing lower costs and better prices. Those areas need very thorough explanation, that is not really here. If the book had been entitled Diagnosing the Opportunity to Deliver Profitable Value, I would not have had this quibble. So really, it's just that the book's title is a bit broader than its coverage.

    Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars DELIVERS A WEALTH OF PROFITABLE VALUE!.......1999-11-28

The author, originator of the "value proposition" concept, presents a new approach to strategy and performance. This system links the organization's capabilities and goal with the real needs of its customers. It replaces the conventional view of developing, producing and marketing product with choosing a complete value proposition, providing each experience in the chosen proposition, and communicating these experiences.

This focus on the experience of the customer is the psychological cornerstone to the author's DPV (delivering profitable value) system. An extensive discussion of this system provides a wealth of profitable value this book delivers. Highly recommended. 4 out of 5 stars This is a superb guide to defining a company strategy.......1999-01-21

The DPV process, and the text itself, are excellent tools. They guide a company away from excessive internal or customer compelled thinking. The book's contentents instead direct the company to understand the experience the customer has with the company's products and all other interactions with the company. Our company is using this now.

5 out of 5 stars One of hte best parenting books!.......2002-07-12

You can find a lot of books about parenting, but many of them are just pop psychology, the solitary opinion of the author.
Gottman is definitely not one of them. He is known as one of the leading psychologists in the area of family and marriage psychology. This book presents the essence of his research findings about raising emotionally intelligent children.
His advise is surprisingly easy and is based on a 5 step model:
    1. Be aware of your child's emotion
    2. See your child's emotions as an opportunity to be close together
    3. Actively listen to your child and validate the feelings
    4. Help your child to verbalize his feelings
    5. Help your child solve problems, while setting clear limits

Gottman clearly explains how you can implement this 5-step-model in daily life and what to do when problems arise. His real life examples make reading really fun.
All in all, an excellent parenting book! As a supplement, I can also recommend the book by M. Seligman: "The optimistic child"

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic audio book every parent should have!.......1999-01-22

This audio book has opened my eyes to what children are really thinking and how to deal with them. I have tried the recommended ideas with my own daughter and it has worked wonders. It can be difficult at first, but with patience, these ideas will create a bond between you and your child that you may not have known could exist.

    5 out of 5 stars Marvellous!.......1998-03-23

"Emotional Intelligence" has recently been recognized as an important life skill. A combination of important traits (including self-discipline, ability to handle anger appropriately, self-esteem, empathy, and social skills), emotional intelligence allows one to handle life's frustrations and to "work and play well with others." These skills have been shown as more important than I.Q. as predictors of success in one's personal relationships and career. This wonderful book teaches parents how to raise their children to have emotional intelligence. The book sees children's problems and frustrations as opportunities for "emotion coaching" - helping them learn how to deal with their emotions. The book also identifies four "parenting styles" - two of these styles react negatively to chldren's negative emotions, one style accepts them but doesn't help the child deal with them, and the "Emotion Coaching" style accepts the emotions and teaches the child what to do with them. I wish my parents had had this book - I was a "difficult" child, prone to tantrums, etc., but much of my difficulty came from feeling frustrated and not knowing what to do about it. My parents were loving, but didn't really know how to handle the problem. This book will create greater understanding between parent and child, and will help the child grow up to be an emotionally healthy adult.

As proposed by Kiyoshi Suzaki, a "mini-company" is a new kind of internal structure within a larger business, managed like an individual but interconnected corporation and designed for both personal and organizational advancement. Suzaki, a worldwide manufacturing consultant and author of several previous books, fully defines the concept in Results from the Heart and shows how it can have positive impacts on employees and ultimately contribute to their success and their company's. The purpose, as he sees it, is to "go beyond just doing our work routinely. We need a fresh and lively new paradigm to continuously find purpose in what we do." This is achieved with his model, Suzaki argues, because it allows workers on all levels to make meaningful contributions in the areas over which they have responsibility. He explains how those in any department can create and operate one of these entities, from developing its mission and orchestrating its implementation to summarizing its progress and acknowledging its contributions. The idea may not appeal to everyone, but Suzaki contends it has already proven effective and he provides enough detail here for anyone interested in giving it a try. --Howard Rothman

    Book Description

Results from the Heart introduces a new and helpful approach to improving job performance, improving job satisfaction, and helping organizations better respond to the rapid changes that are an inherent part of today's business environment. Mr. Suzaki recognizes that a motivated and engaged workforce should be part of any strategy to obtain and maintain competitive advantage.

    --Carl Stern, CEO,
    The Boston Consulting Group

Since the publication of Frederick Taylor's The Principles of Scientific Management, managers have relied on logic to compel action. Now Kiyoshi Suzaki, one of the world's leading experts on enlarging the talents, self-esteem, and growth of the individual employee, argues that logic alone cannot move people to act. Productivity problems are inextricably linked to self-esteem, he argues, and worst of all to a prodigious waste of individual talent. But each solution is personal, Suzaki concludes, and found only within ourselves.

"To find meaning and purpose at work we must use our brain," Suzaki says, "but listen to our heart." In Zenlike fashion he proposes that each of us ask ourselves a series of questions to determine the degree to which our brain is engaged with our heart. The framework around which this selfquestioning takes place is a groundbreaking concept that Suzaki calls "the mini-company." The author demonstrates how, within the larger workplace, each job is endowed with an almost spiritual meaning when each person -- at every level -- becomes president of his or her own area of responsibility. With simple diagrams, Suzaki shows how your boss becomes your banker or venture capitalist and your peers become your immediate suppliers or customers. The results are nothing short of astonishing. In Results from the Heart, Suzaki describes thousands of mini-companies he has "founded" during his worldwide consulting assignments. In most cases in which unhappy employees had previously "followed instructions like robots," there have been spectacular increases in both morale and productivity. If it is true that work is a journey, this manifesto for a more humane definition of the way we work is the roadmap.

4 out of 5 stars Total Productive Maintenance Small Groups Taken to the Next Level.......2007-05-21

I was exposed to Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) throughout the late nineties, therefore the concept of small groups (inherent to the way TPM works) was familiar to me. In "Results from the Heart", Kiyoshi Suzaki, an author of many titles on the famous Japanese manufacturing framework, introduces the concept of Mini-Companies as an extension of the concept of Small Groups.

The tools and components he presents for the internal functioning of Mini-Companies and their interaction with other Mini-Companies across the organization give new life to the concept. This is the true value of the book.

As for the connection of the TPM concepts to finding meaning and purpose at work, the book seems a bit of a stretch, barely touching on the topic. If you really want to read about this, I recommend you try Z.B.A.: Zen of Business Administration - How Zen Practice Can Transform Your Work And Your Life.

    4 out of 5 stars Dalai Lama's foreword .......2004-10-24

Taken from the Dalai Lama's foreword:

"I believe we have both the ability and the means to solve our problems and improve our world. Perhaps, the most important factors that inhibit us are short-sightedness, narrow-mindedness, and selfishness. Yet, to look after yourself is not wrong. Without a strong sense of self, we cannot develop self-confidence, determination, and will power.

But we must be careful, for there is also a narrow minded selfishness that can lead to self-destruction. To counter that we have to realize that in reality our own interest is closely linked to the interests of others and the benefit, happiness, and interests of others are our own."

The idea of mini-company is as simple as that! But there may be a deep gap between spirituality and business... I wonder.

    Book Description

Fans of the best-selling For the Good of the Earth and Sun will applaud this sequel by beloved author Georgia Heard - an inspiring and practical handbook that celebrates the natural power of poetry to teach the essential tools of all writing.

Awakening the Heart explores how to cultivate the poet in every elementary and middle school student - through well-drawn examples, detailed exercises, creative projects, and down-to-earth classroom teachings. Along the way, we learn how to: create environments that encourage children to express their innate sense of wonder; introduce poetry that will engage them; and help children make the transition from reading and talking to writing.

Best of all, Awakening the Heart is filled with luminous poems - by children, famous poets, and Heard herself.

5 out of 5 stars Add Depth to you Poetry Instruction.......2004-02-04

I used this book as a basis for starting a poetry study in my classroom of 4th graders. The information and ideas that Ms. Heard gives are fantastic. It helps you create an poetry friendly environment, not just a few lessons. My students responded whole-heartedly to the suggested activities. The heart map activity was one of their favorites. She gives advice on how to help children write from their hearts and access true emotion (as opposed to writing about surface feelings,"I like my Nintendo"). This is the best poetry book for classroom instruction that I've found. Also, it is an easy and quick read.
I saw her speak on this book at Regis University in June 2003, she is an engaging speaker and it made me love the book even more.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent support for creating a vibrant poetry classroom.......2001-07-07

This is a wonderful book for both the new and the experienced teacher hoping to bring depth and breadth to their classroom poetry programs. I used it as a first-year teacher of writing, but ended up buying a second copy after sharing-out my original with a colleague with substantially more experience.

For starters, the book is well-written and concise. For busy teachers (is that a tautology?) this means you will really read and really use it. It has all the elements that keep such readers engaged: practical classroom ideas, samples of student work, segmentation of topics into smaller components and, wide-ranging perspective.

Most importantly, however, the book has PASSION! Heard launches you with an introduction entitled "Poetry, Like Bread, Is for Everyone". She maintains this level of enthusiasm through to the last page, where she quotes Matthew Fox to the effect that "The Celtic peoples... insisted that only poets could be teachers... knowledge that is not passed through the heart is dangerous."

I agree - passion HAS TO BE the core of a poetry program in elementary or middle school. Amidst the wash of demand for reading and writing more expository material that standardized testing has brought to the writing class, passion and poetry have often slipped to the background. The poetry 'program' can become a quick trot through narrow 'tricksie' forms like name-poems and shape-poems. Kids need more. You do too.

Heard offers a wonderful suite of approaches to poetry 'centers' in a chapter on "Making a Poetry Environment." These include listening, illustration, performance and music centers as well as poetry windows, amazing language center and a handful more. The centers-based approach can be hard to manage unless properly prepared, but it is a wonderful way to build fluidity into a process that otherwise suffers from rigidity of task or schedule. This book will offer strong support for such an approach.

In the chapter discussing "Writing Poetry", Heard takes the metaphor of the door as entryway, suggesting, among others, the "observation door", the "concern about the world door" and the "wonder door." She then moves to the details of crafting of poetry with a "toolbox" metaphor and a nice collection of tools. In this as in the earlier instances, her pedagogical metaphors will serve your students but also serve to structure your planning and presentation of concepts. Heard concludes with a chapter about the observational element of the poet's craft - what she terms "sharpening outer and inner visions", and a number of useful appendices.

I'm certain this book will light-up your enthusiasm for a poetry-based classroom.

5 out of 5 stars Usable classroom ideas which will change your teaching style.......1999-07-09

Ms. Heard has put together exercises and knowledge to create a stunning list of usable classroom exercises. She uplifts even the most discouraged teacher heart and gives you the renewed vigor to attack ignorance while inspiring others to find the light within.

5 out of 5 stars Great info for you child's pediatrician.......2004-01-20

Dr's Wernovsky and Rychik are my daughter's cardiologists and I know them as a parent of a child with a form of HLHS. I reviewed the chapters that are geared for the pediatrician and it provides valuable information for your pediatrician. Since HLHS is a multifaceted problem impacting various aspects of your child's development, the sections I reviewed provides guidance on what to look for and the degress of changes occuring in your child. Good highly technical info that gives a parent some insight but really geared to the medical professional.

Examining the educational instruction of the deaf individual from its Benedictine beginnings to its present condition at Gallaudet University, this book traces the historical pedagogical affinity among Pedro Ponce de Leon, Juan Pablo Bonet, Charles Michael de l'Epee, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Edward Miner Gallaudet. The author provides the historical and philosophical basis for Jewish and Christian beliefs concerning the condition of deafness and then introduces Ponce de Leon, credited as being the first teacher of the deaf. The essence of this Spanish Benedictine monk's methods and manner of teaching have been continued by those who succeeded him. The author traces this development from Spain through France and then to the United States.
