With articles by medical doctors, lawyers, and ethicists, this book thoroughly explores many of the ethical and legal debates in medicine today. Patient autonomy, patient rights, ethical treatment of experimental subjects, palliative care, end-of-life decision making, stem cell research, and bioterrorism are all covered in-depth with arguements from different angles on every topic. Book Description

Prepared and co-published by the National Catholic Bioethics Center in Philadelphia, this book is a combination of two lengthy essays written by Cardinal Ratzinger and delivered in talks when he was head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Both talks deal with the importance of conscience and its exercise in particular circumstances.

Ratzinger's reflections show that contemporary debates over the nature of conscience have deep historical and philosophical roots. He says that a person is bound to act in accord with his conscience, but he makes it clear that there must be reliable, proven sources for the judgment of conscience in moral issues, other than the subjective reflections of each individual.

The always unique and profound insights that the new Pope Benedict XVI brings to perennial problems reminds the reader of his strong warning before the recent Papal conclave of the great dangers today of the "dictatorship of relativism."

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for All People Trying to Act Rightly.......2007-05-15

On Conscience is an essential book for anyone trying to figure out how to know the right thing to do in any given situation. Today there are many who -- while continuing to recognize that acting rightly (whatever that means) is still important -- a large number seem also to believe that anything is right as long as they sincerely think it is right. Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) shows very clearly, and very dramatically and convincingly, that this can not be true. While continuing to honor the ancient tradition that a certain conscience must be followed, he shows that there also must be a serious effort to form a correct conscience, and illustrates from recent human history what can happen if this effort to cultivate a correct conscience is not taken. This book deals directly with the apparent conflict between individual conscience and external authority. The only shortcoming of the book is that some of the explanations are unduly long, and make for dry reading as a result. Well worth the effort anyhow.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Reflections on Conscience!.......2007-04-02

To the best of my knowledge, these essays were presented in English (both were keynote addresses to bishops' workshops.) and it may partly this fact - their lack of translation by a second party - that makes the texts so wonderfully approachable. Having studied a great amount of Ratzinger's work from his more than forty-year career, I feel that I have a decent grasp of his world-view, approach and theological method. Absolutely consistent with his previous and following work, the essays reprinted in "On Conscience" (one from 1984, the other 1991) are real gems.

What is perhaps the most interesting and significant feature of these texts is the insider's view one obtains from the 1991 address. Written just under a year before the publication of the new Catechism of the Catholic Church, of which Ratzinger was primary editor, this address highlights almost verbatim much of what is written in the CCC under the heading of conscience. I have to wonder whether or not the bishops at the time really appreciated the preview they were privy to.

Both texts and the introduction total around 85 pages, so this is a very short read. I highly recommend it, especially for it's clear language and well articulated views.

      Book Description

The doctor patient relationship starts with a story. Doctors' notes, a patient's chart, the recommendations of ethics committees and insurance justifications all hinge on written and verbal narrative interaction. The "practice" of narrative profoundly affects decision making, patient health and treatment and the everyday practice of medicine. In this edited collection, the contributors provide conceptual foundations, practical guidelines and theoretical considerations central to the practice of narrative ethics.

5 out of 5 stars given other names in the field - Delightfully readable!.......2004-12-10

This is an excellent overview of the myriad of issues that fall under the term "biomedical ethics". This was used as one of the texts for my health care ethics graduate course, and I could actually read this. Although Childress and Beauchamp may be considered the "standards" in the field, they are also when known for being very difficult to read (my prof warned us on day one that their "Introduction" would be very heady, and the warning rang true the moment I opened their book).

This book brings together writings from numerous excellent authors that are all very easy to digest, particularly in light of other "introductions" available. I enjoyed this book immensely. Not only did it help me greatly in my studies, it has also helped me greatly in navigating my own health care. Whether you are reading for academic pursuits, or are otherwise interested enough in the field to buy a book about it, I highly recommend THIS ONE!

5 out of 5 stars A Very Good Introduction to Bioethics.......1999-07-15

Biomedical Ethics is a wonderful introduction to bioethical issues. The authors' styles of writing are (usually) easily understandable, and the inserted case studies make for interesting reading. More of a textbook than a "quickread".

        Book Description

What role should religion play in a religiously pluralistic liberal society? Public bioethics unavoidably raises this question in a particularly insistent fashion. As the 20 papers in this collection demonstrate, the issues are complex and multifaceted. The authors address specific and highly contested issues as assisted suicide, stem cell research, cloning, reproductive health, and alternative medicine as well as more general questions such as who legitimately speaks for religion in public bioethics, what religion can add to our understanding of justice, and the value of faith-based contributions to healthcare. Christian (Catholic and Protestant), Jewish, Islamic, and Buddhist viewpoints are represented. The first book to focus on the interface of religion and bioethics, this collection fills a significant void in the literature.

        Book Description

Since it was first published in 1999, Helga Kuhse and Peter Singer 's Bioethics: An Anthology has become established as the definitive one-volume collection of key primary readings in bioethics. Alongside coverage of issues such as reproduction, genetics, life and death, and animal experimentation, this expanded and revised edition now features essays on hot topics such as genetic screening, the use of embryonic human stem cells, and resource allocation between patients. New section introductions written by the editors shed light on the matters explored, and an extensive index makes it easy to navigate the text.Designed to complement A Companion to Bioethics, also edited by Helga Kuhse and Peter Singer (1999), the volume will continue to be of great value as both a textbook and reference work, suitable not only for students of philosophy and moral theology, but also for doctors, nurses, sociologists, lawyers, and others working in health care and the biomedical sciences.

A good collection of philosophy papers. I wasn't that interested in it only b/c I am not interested in philosophy enough to truly appreciate the book.

3 out of 5 stars Essential Articles but very one sided.......2005-06-02

This book has some great papers in it, but the editors really show their colors in the bioethics debate in the papers presented. For example the book presents a declaration by the Catholic Church denouncing euthanasia, but fails to present any of the background material that led to this declaration (or even references to it). It also presents a good number of papers that rely too heavily on anecdotes.

To get a feel for Singer and Kuhse's (two very big names of the field) opinons the book is great. To get a balanced treatment of the bioethics debate, the book fails.

5 out of 5 stars Bioethics, for genreal interest and further study........2000-04-01

The Blackwells Anthology on Bioethics provides a strong material based support for courses in Bioethics or applied Philopsophy. It's two best features are that it contains the articles that most Bioethics courses will require you to read (Response to Purdy, for example) and yet most of the articles are in easy to understand language and require little or no previous knowledge. Also, far from being the dry tomes one associates with philosophical essays, the articles are genuinely engaging.

There are a few articles where if you haven't read Kant or Mill before you might be stuck, but most are easy to read and some entries are written by lay people about their experiences, including one mans suicide note as an argument for euthanasia and a couples experiences of IVF.

The editorial really helps to highlight the issues in the book and it is arranged in an acessible format, so that one can skip areas that aren't of interest.

Useful to students or acaedemics (in Medicine or Philosophy) and fascinating for anyone who wants to look into this area.

3 out of 5 stars Circular Arguments of the Topic of Bioethics.......2000-07-23

This book briefly covers many topics relating to bioethics in a manner in which it can be used as a textbook or a book for informational enjoyment. The best aspect of the book is its medical cases; these give real-life examples of the topics discussed so that the arguments and rationale are not so confusing. As a college student, I found it very helpful because it covered a broad range of ethical topics, including abortion, euthanasia, etc.

Although the book was informative, the arguments were sometimes unclear. I understand that bioethics is a field of endless circular arguments, but the manner in which the topics were presented was sometimes difficult to understand. Some case examples were used but I think more would have been quite helpful. Whollly, the book served its purpose for me as being an introduction to bioethics, and it includes glossaries after every chapter to look up terms used in the text.
