I used this book as a supplement in a 4th semester chemistry course targeted for biology and premedical students this past term. It has excellent up-to-date examples and good problems. Hammes does a nice job of presenting at an appropriate level topics from thermodynamics and kinetics needed to read and understand biochemical articles. Such things as the meaning of the biochemical (as opposed to the chemical) standard state are particularly well done -- better than in other books I have seen for this audience.
But why does Wiley price [it at its cost]? Perhaps it is the nice color plates --- but at a lower price I would have had everyone in my class buy this as a suppplement to the text. At this price I am reluctant to do so.

I enjoyed reading and studying this "thermodynamic/kinetics with a biochemistry twist". Most thermo books get too bogged down with ideal gases and the cost in time versus the benefits of material learned is too great. Dr. Hammes however has an easy reading style and focuses in on the "meat" of physical biochemistry pertaining to thermodynamics and kinetics. I am not a formal student, but a cardiologist interested in physical biochemistry. P-Chem learning requires doing the problems. The only drawback to Professor Hammes's textbook is that there are no solved problems or solutions manual for the problems in the back of each chapter. Nerds like me find these problems as a useful exercise in learning to insure that we have mastered the material. You will not be disappointed in this book.

This is a very thoroughly written introductory work for biophysics, an area where it is very difficult indeed to find intro-level textbooks.
Both biologists and physicists will find many new things worth exploring, and this book will certainly provide the basics for further research and study. It isn't the ten volume all-you-will-ever-want-to-know-about-biophysics, but whichever area You are starting to work with, from membrane transport to biomechanics, have a look at this book first.
Excellent starting for Biophysics.......2003-09-22
This book is written by a biologist. However, the author discussed lots of physics topics closely related to basic biological phenomena. The most important role of this book, I believe, is making the bridge between physics and biology as well as biochemistry. Untill now, most of biophyiscs text books have been a kind of biochemsitry text book like ones. This one is distingusihed from those. This is also good for biochemistry student who wants to study physical aspects of biological system beyond the scope of biochemistry. Some parts of this book might be difficult for biology and biochemistry students but surely deserves to be read.

For people with little insight (but interest) in thermodynamics this book is mandatory. For me personally it has been a quick way to freshen up the concepts of thermodynamics. The book is in large parts well written with many easy to understand examples of otherwise diffucult topics.
An interesting book.......2004-07-20
I teach a course in thermodynamics for college students in biology, as such, I thought the book could be useful, perhaps the new textbook for my course.
Possitive things:
* you will find real thermodynamics, biology and also historical notes in the book.
* there are not too many books that blend biology and thermodynamics in forms acceptable to biologist and physicists, this one does.
* it has an interesting selection of subjects
Problems:
* most of the time it has TOO many words, for those that like concise presentations, it is a problem. There are no evident forms to distinguish essential from accesory
* there is a bias towards bio-chemistry that introduces some additional difficulties for people with other backgrounds

Although Mrs. Faversham is revealed as the murderer in the first third of the book, the joy is in the chase. Dr. Haynie's Inspector Thorndyke is a valuable addition to mystery fiction. Although the subplot about the stuttering pan flute player seemed a little belaboured.

This book is cleverly written. What comes through on every page is Dr. Haynie's breadth of knowledge and enthusiasm for his subject. Dr. Haynie proved that a good scientific text need not be boring. Students who want to learn how thermodynamics relates to everyday life and how their body works will love this book.

I'm a Ph.D. student in computational modeling specializing in applications in physics and bioinformatics. My bachelor's degree is in biophysics. I have read numerous biosciences books and texbooks by leading authors. In my opinion this book is one of the best biophysics books I have ever read. I found this book accessible, which is important for students, and yet engaging. The author provides broad coverage of the subject and thoroughly explains basic concepts. For instance, the first law is covered in its own chapter, as is the second law. There are two chapters of Gibbs free energy, with many practical applications, and one on statistical thermodynamics. The chapter on kinetics is an appropriate complement to a book whose main subject is thermodynamics. The final chapter reads like a popular book, introducing students to a number of very interesting and exciting areas for research. This is truly a unique textbook. My guess is that this book might become a classic.

This book is excellent and should be read for those Physicochemical Professors that believe second law can not be taught without calculus. Thermodynamics is a subject demistified in this book.
Superb Science and Art.......2006-11-02
This is one of the few recent books that I am buying for friends. Schneider and (Dorion) Sagan do a marvelous job of explicating the most significant concepts behind non-equilibrium thermodynamics. Their explanation makes the subject both accessible and meaningful - an artful and rare accomplishment. And, as I am finding out, their message is enlightening for even friends with science degrees!
It has been stressed for years how the "entropy law" foretells and mandates a relentless downward spiral towards equilibrium (oblivion). Now read about the other side of the story - how the ongoing evolution of complexity gets its "sustenance" from its ability to destroy energy gradients and thus entropy becomes the essential engine and ally in the evolution of our universe and self-analytical life.

After reading the book I added a prefix to my name, GRS - gradient reducing system. Indeed, I am a GRS with around 4 bn year history and helping nature reduce the gradient between 5800K Sun and 2.7K outer space.
If you read Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins, and are wondering why the gene has got to be "selfish", then you must read this book. Its simple, when there is a gradient, nature detests it and finds a way of removing the gradient in most efficient way.
Also, this book gives insights into Ecology and how each species(including us) depends on many other species. It gives a feeling that the eastern concept of one's relationship with the whole universe, is indeed true to some extent in some sense. It also lets us understand why we need to save the rain forests at any cost, if we are indeed looking at long term survival.
Some examples for how nature tries to abolish gradient are exhilarating. After reading this book I got a feeling that Second law of thermodynamics replaces "God".
The rise of complexity in open system with energy flow, information flow is neatly explained using non-equilibrium thermodynamics(NET). Understanding the rise of life at the most fundamental level yet is so thrilling. Some mathematics would have helped but since the book is meant for a layman too, its understandable.

Works of scientific significance tend to fall into one of two categories: those that present new material, and those that reconfigure existing material into something that is new by virtue of its originality of insight. "Into the Cool" falls decisively into the second category, and Eric Schneider and Dorion Sagan have created a book that is as much concerned with philosophy of science as it is about science. The book seamlessly presents the historical and philosophical evolution of a fundamental principle (the second law of thermodynamics as applied to open systems) and develops the implications of the principle in a staggeringly wide range of contexts. In doing so, the authors have avoided the gratuitous descent into the intentionally obscure that mars so much of "popular" scientific writing, and have given us a work that is engaging, lucid and supremely approachable. Their approach risks repetition of material, and the book is not immune to that criticism. In the book's finest moments, however, the authors are able to exploit that repetition by presenting their material in a variety of contexts that collectively support the validity of their argument. In the section on economics, for example (economics in a work on thermodynamics!), the authors make a persuasive case for viewing markets as organically derived from, rather than merely analogical to, the implications of the second law. The authors' treatment of this argument requires less in the way of philosophical gymnastics than might be imagined, and their exposition makes the unfolding of the logic seem almost inevitable. Because of the richness of the material, this is a work that demands more than one reading. Fortunately, the warmth and sincerity of the writing make this book a joy, rather than the heavy going that might easily have otherwise resulted. Highly recommended.

if you are a reader who enjoys a book that brings together information from many different fields of science to assemble them in support of a more general idea then 'into the cool' is a book you.
ultimately this is not a book about science but a story of our micro and macro world for which the formulas and the math and the science are yet undeveloped. however, the thought experiments, analogous and philosophical, are well within the reach of a curious mind out for a scientific reward.
schneider and sagan take you on a journey of energetic enthusiasm during which, at some point, you will find yourself no longer looking in on an idea for having become the very idea yourself.

Slow sand filtration is credited with being the first drinking water treatment process utilised to improve the quality of water in both modern Europe and the USA. Within the last 10 years, there has been a renaissance of interest in the potential use of enhanced processes of slow sand filtration throughout the world, especially for small and rural communities, and it continues to be the primary treatment process for many major European cities. The book deals with the latest research developments in slow sand and alternative biological filtration processes for drinking water treatment, including advances in the understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of the processes. In addition, progress in the techniques of operation and upgrading of the processes are described, with case studies from around the world. The principal themes of the book are: General overview; Removal of Natural Organic Matter (NOM), Biodegradable Organic Carbon (BOC) and Ozonation by-products; Biofilter media characteristics; Influence of process design variables and modifications; Modelling process performance; Pre-treatment applications; Operational experience and cleaning; and Upgrading treatment processes. The book also has an international perspective with case-studies from around the world.

Book Description
This book provides the first systematic treatment of the thermodynamic theory of site-specific effects in biological macromolecules. It describes the phenomenological and conceptual bases required to allow a mechanistic understanding of these effects from analysis of experimental data. The thermodynamic theory also results in novel experimental strategies that enable the derivation of information on local, site-specific properties of a macromolecular system from analysis of perturbed global properties. The treatment focuses on binding phenomena, but is amenable to extension both conceptually and formally to the analysis of other cooperative processes, such as folding and helix–coil transitions. This book will interest any scientist involved in structure–function studies of biological macromolecules, or as a text for graduate students in biochemistry and biophysics.

This book provides a lot of in depth theory for those wishing to learn about ligand-receptor interactions. The book focuses on a historical perspective throughout the introduction, then addresses contemporary ligand-binding experimental techniques from a drug/inhibitor/receptor stand-point. In addition, this is key reference material to accompany "Graphpad Prizm" non-linear regression/ligand-binding analysis/graphing software. Reccomended reading!
