Book Description
"This monograph provides an idealist's take on cleaning up the clutter of urban space."Inside Out
One of the most exciting and accomplished young architects to emerge on the international scene in many years, David Adjaye concentrates in his work on materials and issues of place and identity. A combination of sheer inventiveness, creative clients, and modest budgets has produced a refined and comprehensive body of design unusual in such a young practitioner.
Four essential components make up this, Adjaye's first monograph: an introduction by Stuart Hall; a documentation of thirteen of Adjaye's most important projects, over half of which are published here in full for the first time, presented through descriptions, detailed plans, and photographs; a series of visual essays that highlight the tactile, luminous, and luxurious nature of Adjaye's work; and essays from cultural critics who have been inspired by his buildings. 430 illustrations, 162 in color.
Customer Reviews:
poor work.......2007-07-23
the book is fully illustrated but the photos are too small and hasn't good quality.
it brings just a few and small projects, without relevance (most of them are refurbushings in existing buildings).
adjaye has just beggan his career as an architect.
so, i think that this book came too early.

Book Description
In this classic of English architectural history (first published more than half a century ago), John Summerson provides a perceptive and highly readable account of a major building period in the history of London. Encompassing the architecture of the capital from the Great Fire of 1666 through the city's early nineteenth-century expansion, the book remains an indispensable guide to the genesis and development of Georgian London. Summerson examines the way in which building was conditioned by social, economic, and financial circumstances and discusses some of Britain's most important buildings and their architects. While Summerson's text is essentially unchanged in this edition, it has been corrected in the light of new research, expanded to include a few significant buildings that were originally overlooked, and enhanced with new illustrations. The Appendix of surviving Georgian buildings has also been carefully updated.

Book Description
The magazine Typographica--brainchild of founder, editor, designer, and renowned typographer Herbert Spencer--had a brief life, a total of 32 issues published over nineteen years. But its influence stretched--and stretches--far beyond its modest distribution and print runs of the time. Indeed, for many graphic designers, Typographica is something of an obsession, to be collected if and when found, savored, and poured over for designs and techniques not seen since. Remarkably, Spencer never intended to turn a profit, so no expenses were spared in the making of the magazine. Different papers, letterpress, tip-ins, and more were all employed in the presentation of an eclectic range of subject matter: Braille, locomotive lettering, sex and typography, typewriter faces, street lettering, matches, and avant-garde poetry all found their way into the magazine. Rick Poynor, founding editor of Eye, recreates the excitement of Typographica in this carefully researched, accessibly written, and beautifully illustrated book that pays tribute to the man and the magazine that changed the course of graphic design.
Customer Reviews:
An important book.......2003-05-17
This important volume works both as a rich and detailed history and as a visual feast. Though the subject may seem esoteric (a British typography magazine that ceased publication in 1967), Rick Poynor makes a convincing case for Herbert Spencer's crucial role in the history of British graphic design as a champion of the modernist aesthetic. The book is cleanly designed by Stephen Coates, with superb reproductions from the magazine.
an archieve of old Typographica Magazine.......2003-04-01
The name "Typographica" sounds great but may be misleading! It's not an index book or source about nowadays modern typographic design but a memory of Typographica Magazine which has been published over between 1949-1967. Includes collected sample pages and scripts from the old magazine. It's just history...
Book Description
A lavish record of an extraordinary collaboration between designer and architectand the catalyst for the William Morris style.
Red House occupies a singular place in British architectural history: it was the first and only house that was built for designer William Morris, and it was the first independent architectural commission for his friend, Philip Webb. The challenge of furnishing the house inspired Morris and his Pre-Raphaelite friends to found the design firm of Morris & Co., which was the flagship for what was to become the Arts & Crafts movement. Red House captured Morris' heart. He was only 25 when, in 1858, he married Jane Burden, whose beauty was the inspiration for much of Pre-Raphaelite art. With his young wife, he planned to produce a vision of "earthly paradise" at Red House; however, the idyll was found to be impractical, and Morris left after five years. Because of its illustrious first owner, Red House was never forgotten, and a succession of tenants kept Morris' spirit alive in the house; in 2003, Red House was acquired for the National Trust. This handsome volume provides both the story of Red House and a "virtual tour" that enables the reader to see how this splendid house looked and functioned when it was inhabited by the celebrated designer.

William Morris and Red House.......2007-01-10
A beautiful tour of one of the first Arts & crafts homes. It was interesting to see the changes that have been made since we were there.

Lost Interiors in Black and White.......2002-08-11
The book is an exquisite capsule of magnificent interiors of London buildings, most of which have been destroyed or dismantled. As a reference book it is invaluable but there are also ideas that can be adapted by anyone who wants to learn more about classical proportions. My only regret is not to have been able to have seen these interiors in color. M. Boyd
A must for any person interested in great architecture........2002-03-25
It's hard to believe that we, as a people, once created the kind of interiors that are so splendidly recalled by this book. It's even harder to believe that so many of the interiors presented have been demolished. Will architects and artisans and craftspeople ever again create such impressive works? The answer, likely, is no. As such, should we not, absolutely, save all such remaining treasures? This book makes an excellent case for this argument, with its beautiful images, beautifully printed. The text is crisp, and the author nicely opinioned. All this volume lacks is a map showing the houses and neighborhoods discussed (helpful to us non-Londoners).

Customer Reviews:
Great for serious tourists or future London residents.......2000-07-06
This is a great book for those who either want to discover human side of London (as opposed to tourist one) or just consider moving there.
First, it has a good account of central neighbourhoods (villages) with lively essays about each of them. These essays are not dry, yet informative. They are in no sense complete research, but instead give you a good feeling about diversity of London.
Second, this is one of few books that provide an inside look at Londoner's everyday life: parks and gardens, interiors, places to meet and socialize, and, as a bonus, chapter about places for men (clubs, shops, pubs).
Third, Visitor's Guide section provides you with useful addresses and phone numbers, though it is in no way complete or comprehensive.
Fourth, photographs are very good, numerous and thoroughly selected which, combined with high quality of printing, gives you a very pleasant reading (or even glancing) experience.
One word of warning: authors seem to be too much affiliated with Terence Conran, famous British designer, therefore you should view their opinions about his work (development, design etc) with a grain of salt (that's why I gave this book 4 stars, not 5).
Overall, the book is a worthy possession for those who like London and want to know more. I would even recommend it to locals. I wish I had equivalent book for Seattle.
