One of the best mafia/gangster books I've ever read! Roy Demeo, a made mob member, lead a crew of scumbags who were greed-driven thieves and ruthless killers. If you've ever read about Roy Demeo and want to know more, this is the book for you.

This book was very well written and will get under your skin. You will be shaking your head with disbelief at the end of the book. I felt I could almost feel the pain, fear and confusion from most of the characters in the book.

I thought this book was a lot of fun. It is written by 2 NY Daily News crime reporters so the book does not have an over arching narrative, like most true crime novels do. For a mafia book an episodic structure works well because it allows the authors to jump from cool story to cool story.
More than expected........2007-01-20
If you like Mafia type stories this a good read. The book is about the DeMao crew from NY. There are many people involved in this story from the top of the chain such as Paul Castellano on down the line to just wanna be's in the mafia regime. The story is basically about a crew that works under Big Paulie and is involved in drugs, racketeering, extortion, auto theft, pornography, and of course Murder. The title Murder Machine is no lie when it comes to this crew as the will kill anybody, anytime and just about anywhere. Some graphic details are laid out how the crew make people disappear or how they are left to be found for intense purposes. Killing for the DeMao crew is every day nature which is kind of creepy but just business in there eyes. The story is goes through high's and low's of the crews personal lives and "professional" lives and gives a good insight to how the crew operated day in and out and all the thing's that they were involved in to make money for themselves, there capo's and for "the family". At some points it's amazing how one minute everyone is a loving family and friends laughing, drinkning, eating and the next minute someone is aced out by the same people. Nothing lasts forever or at least that's what they say in the crime world but these guys eventually get busted due to some persistent FBI/NYPD guys. Of course in the mafia world being a "rat" is outta the question unless you feel you got no other choice or choose a different life. The book goes through differnent aspects of the characters lives and how it all comes to an end.

Gene Garrison spent a terrifying nineteenth birthday crammed into a muddy foxhole near the German border in the Saar. He listened helplessly to cries of wounded comrades as exploding artillery shells sent deadly shrapnel raining down on them. The date was December 16, 1944, he was a member of a .30-caliber machine-gun crew with the 87th Infantry Division and this was his first day in combat.
Less than a year earlier, he had taken the first steps in charting his future, entering college as a fresh-faced kid from the farmlands of Ohio. Now, as the night closed around Garrison, slices of light pierced the darkness with frightening brilliance. Battle-hardened German SS troopers using flashlights infiltrated the line of the young, untested American soldiers. Someone screamed "Counterattack!" In the maelstrom of gun fire that followed the teenaged Garrison struggled to comprehend the horrors of the present, his entire future reduced to a prayer that he would be alive at daybreak.
From those first frightening, confusing days in combat until the end of the war five months later, Gene Garrison saw many of his buddies killed or wounded, each loss reducing his own odds of survival. Convinced before one attack that his luck had deserted him, he wrote a final letter to his family, telling them goodbye. Garrison gave the letter to a buddy with instructions to mail it if he died.
From the bitter fighting west of Bastogne in the Battle of the Bulge to the end of the war on the Czechoslovakian border, Garrison describes the degradation of war with pathos and humor.
Gene Garrison's story is told through the eyes of the common soldier, a man who might not know the name of the town or the location of the next hill that he and his comrades must grimly wrestle from the enemy but who is willing to die in order to carry the war forward to the hated enemy. He writes of the simple pleasure derived from finding a water-filled puddle deep enough to fill his canteen; a momentary respite in a half-destroyed barn that shields him from the bitter cold and penetrating wind of an Ardennes winter; the solace of friendship with a core of veterans whose lives hang upon his actions and whose actions might help him survive the bitter, impersonal death they all face.
The rich dialogue and a hard-hitting narrative style bring the reader to battlefield manhood alongside Garrison, to each moment of terror and triumph faced by a young soldier far from home in the company of strangers.

Poignant Personal Memoir.......2007-08-31
"Unless Victory Comes", by Gene Garrison (with Patrick Gilbert). Subtitled: "Combat With A Machine Gunner In Patton's Third Army". Casemate, Havertown, PA, 2004.
At the very end of his book, Gene Garrison states that "...this book is my memoir. It is not intended to be a definitive history of the fighting in Europe".
The author has accomplished his stated purpose, as he has produced a matter-of-fact memoir that describes his experiences in the European Theatre of Operations. As a young man (one of his chapters is entitled, "Turning Nineteen In Battle", page 29), Gene Garrison describes the journey from stateside, (Fort Jackson), to England and then to France, where his outfit, the 87th Infantry Division, arrived after the D-Day invasion.
Unlike so many other personal memoirs, this author rapidly sums up basic training and then his transfer to the "Golden Acorn" division, which he describes as a reserve division that had not seen action since World War I. Private Garrison was volunteered to be machine gunner, which he describes as good in that there were two men together, but was also bad since the firepower of the machine gun would draw down enemy attention. His description of standing on the back of a Sherman tank, as he fired the top mount fifty caliber machine gun is all presented with just the facts, even as he is pushed off the tank to avoid enemy fire. Garrison's memoir goes on in this matter-of-fact fashion until the end of hostilities in Europe. Then, at the very end of war in Europe, Garrison is diagnosed with yellow jaundice and required to go to the hospital. Very poignantly, as he leaves his comrades, he shouts a farewell to Tony D'Arpino, saying, "...you're the only one left from Fort Jackson".
The chapter is closed with a quote from the front of his book, "When the last man was gone, would there be anyone to miss him?"
This book belongs in your collection........2006-02-09
Nice, easy to read account of some pretty intense action. I've read so much about the ETO that I'm starting to read accounts of the same events by different authors. That's pretty nice since I've found that some accounts support each other, and some accounts don't. That shows just how different units that fought the same battle a couple of miles apart could have had a completely different experience. This book adds a really great first person account to the history of WW2. Fans of the ETO will enjoy this perspective. Those less studied will find that Mr. Garrison helps put a face and name to the action that general interest WW2 volumes could never do.
I think you'll enjoy this book enough to reccomend it to someone else.

Excellent reference book for designers, engineers and electricians.......2007-04-07
I've worked as a consulting electrical engineer for 20 years and have sometimes been embarrassed for not knowing what tools and materials electricians use to install our designs. That information is not taught in college. I just happened on this book by chance on Amazon. The author presents in clear and concise sentences exactly what the tool or material is used for, its benefits and its limitations. Since there are usually many different ways to do an installation, this book also has the affect of jogging your memory of what things are available and may give you an idea on a better way. If you are just starting as a consulting engineer or work for as an engineer for an A/E firm - this book would be a great reference.

Good overview of nonlinear dynamics.......2005-11-15
This book is an overview of all of the components of nonlinear dynamics. Nonlinear dynamics is a field of study that enables well-constructed predictive modeling of systems that might be difficult to solve otherwise. Such continuous systems were first widely modeled by ordinary and differential equations, but with the passage of time there are now tools and mathematical models at our disposal that make for a much more concise model of many systems. This workbook tries to touch on all of those mathematical tools. The first six chapters of the book has to do with modeling such complex systems in general, and the rest of the book is a survey of the tools needed to perform complex modeling. The book's format is that of briefly explaining a concept in a few pages, and then presenting a computer program that demonstrates the concept just explained. The explanations are very clear and concise, there are plenty of equations shown, and the accompanying code is well commented. If you want to really drill deeply into any of the concepts then you are going to need some other books. I suggest that for further reading for the mathematically inclined that you pick up "Chaos: An Introduction to Dynamical Systems" by Kathleen Alligood. For scientists that want to see specific problems that can be solved by dynamical systems I suggest the excellent "Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos: With Applications in Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Engineering" by Strogatz. The only real complaint I have against this book is that there is uneven coverage of different tools. For example, the author has a great deal to say about neural networks and fuzzy logic, but has very short chapters covering discrete wavelets and cellular automata. More material would have been great, since it is hard to find good books on discrete wavelets and cellular automata in particular. Some readers may also be annoyed that much of the book are code listings of the various demonstration programs. Overall, I would highly recommend it as one of several books that anyone interested in dynamical systems should definitely own. In particular, those individuals interested in the techniques of algorithmic composition of music might find this book a good jumping off point for studying the tools and techniques that make such compositions possible.
Helpful in some sections.......2001-09-01
The topics covered in this book are all important from the standpoint of applications in physics, engineering, computer science, financial engineering, and computational biology. It is written for the person just getting started in these topics, and the author does a fairly good job of discussing them. Readers should not expect, and they will not get, in-depth discussions on these topics, as this would swell the book to 10 times the size. They will however get preparation for moving on to more advanced and complete treatments.
Nonlinear and chaotic maps are considered in chapter 1, with elementary definitions given and six different examples of maps discussed. In discussing the calculation of numerical trajectories of maps, the author deals with the problem of large initial values for the maps and how to implement these in SymbolicC++ and Java. He also shows how to write/read data to a file using C, C++, and JAVA. The exception handling capability of JAVA comes out nicely, but no performance comparison between the three languages for simulating the maps is given by the author. The language REDUCE is used to discuss the stability of the fixed points of the logistic equation, but the code would be useless to the reader who did not have REDUCE since some of the function calls are hidden from the reader. Useful programs are given for calculating the Lyapunov and autocorrelation functions. In addition, C++ programs are given for evaluating the correlation integral for the Henon map. The programs he develops in this chapter can serve as a quick benchmark for one's own programs that calculate the same quantities.
In chapter 2, the author discusses methods for studying time series, including the Lyapunov and Hurst exponents. These two quantities are of enormous importance in the study of dynamical systems, financial data, and network performance. The C++ program that the author gives for calculating the Hurst exponent will not work for arbitrary time intervals. This is followed in the next chapter by a consideration of autonomous systems of ordinary differential equations. The classification of fixed points is considered, and the important concept of a homoclinic orbit. The author gives a nice JAVA program that finds the homoclinic orbit of an anharmonic differential equation using the Lie series technique. The phase portrait of the Van der Pol oscillator is calculated using the Runge-Kutta technique in a C++ program, along with the Lotka-Volterra system from mathematical biology.
Hamiltonian mechanics is discussed in chapter 4, with the important Henon-Heiles model from astrophysics is discussed and JAVA programs given for studying its behavior using the Poincare section technique. Newcomers to this technique will appreciate seeing it done here explicitly. Integrability of Hamiltonian systems using the Lax representation and Floquet theory are also treated, but only at a very rudimentary level. Dissipation is included in the next chapter, and the author discusses the classification of fixed points according to their stability. Lyapunov exponents are again brought into the picture, and the phenomenon of hyperchaos is discussed. Some bifurcation theory is introduced with an example of the Hopf bifurcation. Chapter 6 studies nonlinear driven systems, with the Duffing oscillator treated, and the author gives a useful program for calculating the autocorrelation function of this system. The controlling of chaos with feedback and non-feedback controls is the subject of the next chapter, mostly in the context of difference maps. Fractals finally get introduced in chapter 8, with iterated function systems defined but proofs of their properties omitted. The author gives programs for calculating various popular fractals, such as the dragon, Sierpinski gasket, Koch curve, the Mandelbrot set, and the Julia set. The main disappointment in this chapter is that the author does not give programs for calculating the Hausdorff dimension or capacity, quantities that are notoriously difficult to get a meaningful computational handle on.
The author switches gears in the next chapter and discusses cellular automata, which have recently made a comeback, especially in research on quantum computation. The discussion is too brief however, and does not allow the reader to gain an appreciation of the properties of these important objects. Chapter 10 gives a brief overview of some techniques for solving differential equations, such as the Euler method and the Lie series technique. The latter is not commonly treated in beginning books so its inclusion here is helpful. Symplectic integration is also discussed briefly, but the author does not discuss how to check the integrators using backward integration, which is commonly used in conservative systems modeled by symplectic maps.
Chapter 11, covering neural networks, is the most well-written in the book, and the newcomer to the field will get a fairly decent introduction to the subject. The supplied programs serve to illustrate some of the important concepts in neural networks, such as the Hopfield model, the Kohonen network, the perceptron learning algorithm, and the back-propagation algorithm.
Chapter 12 is an introduction to genetic algorithms, and I find this one particularly nice also, as it does give a rudimentary introduction to what evolutionary algorithms are all about, and gives some elementary genetic programs that find the maximum of one- and two-dimensional maps. He also discusses simulated annealing, and gives a useful program that allows the reader to see clearly how this technique works.
The last chapter covers fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic, which has also taken on importance in recent years, especially in data mining and financial engineering. The programs given to illustrate the concepts are particularly interesting from the standpoint of coding in C++, as the author uses friend functions and operating overloading in some of them. The reader gets a good overview of fuzzy reasoning and fuzzy rule-based systems.
Useful information, poor presentation.......2000-07-19
The information was useful & approprate to the topic. I'd rank it as an average quality refence but a very poor text book.
The text is poorly written. The code is simple and easy to understand, but not very object oriented. There is not enough explanation of the code. The code is not electronically available.
The treatment was very mathematical but lacking in explanation & application examples. There were plenty of deffinitions, but not enough examples.

DECENT REFERENCE.......2007-01-09
I PURCHASED THIS BOOK TO HAVE A GRAPHICAL REFERENCE OF GD&T, IT DOES A DECENT JOB BUT THE EXAMPLES STILL ARE NOT AS COMPLICATED AS THAT WHICH IS COMMONPLACE IN INDUSTRY. I STILL USE GOOGLE TO FIND DRAWING EXAMPLES MORE OFTEN THAN ANY OF MY REFERENCE MANUALS.

Overall, this is a good book on the various subjects it covers, but I have to wonder - why would you buy this expensive hardcover version when the paperback version costs a little more than half what this hardcover costs? The contents are the same, the publication date is the same, and having had my softcover copy for two years and made heavy use of it, it seems to be standing up to the wear and tear just fine.

explains many key ideas.......2005-12-08
Here is a text of advanced nonlinear dynamics. Geared towards the intensive use of computers to perform the necessary grungework. Steeb hits on many important ideas that have emerged in recent decades. He shows the interrelation between chaotic phenomena and fractals, and how fractals can be used to describe the onset to chaos.
The Hidden Markov Models have proved to be the key idea in current Automatic Speech Recognisers. A tribute to the practical nature of this idea.
Steeb's discussion of neural networks and genetic algorithms is enough to get you started in this field. Ideas like forward and back propagation for feedback are clearly explained.
The sample code should be welcomed. It lets you see for yourself on your own computer, and to tinker with the various parameters. Though I am unsure about the choice of code in Symbolic C++. Unlike C++ or Java, this is a rarely used language.

Starts slow, ends with a flourish.......2004-12-22
Only 127 pages and 8 stories, I found O'Neill's collection to be a bit thin. Not only that, I felt the title was misleading because there were no hard sci-fi computer or world machine stories. And the book started out weakly with a couple of ok stories. But give it time, give it time.
Like swimming in shallow water at first, you will find yourself suddenly plunging into some excellent tales, starting the warm up with The Burden Of Indigo and finishing with four more excellent stories, The City Never Sleeps is a surreal story of a man's life unfolding, Undercover brings in a very specialized robot on a galactic chase for a villain, The Beautiful Stranger is a haunting tale of a husbands decline into uselessness to his family, and Shadow Of The Mountain is a beautiful and strangely dreamlike look into a young soldier's past as he lay dying.
If you are an anthology lover like I am, this is a worthwhile purchase for your collection. If you are not sure, I strongly recommend checking it out from your local library. I think you will find a pleasant surprise in this author's first collection of shorts. Perfect book for travel or beach, or to keep in your pocket to peruse when waiting on appointments. Enjoy!

Harvey Green The Eating Machine is a whimsical (bordering on ludicrous) picture book by Gene Perret, about Harvey Green, a young boy who likes to eat -- perhaps too much! Wild color illustrations by Gary Bennett wonderfully enhance this fanciful tale, and a brief segment at the end teaches young folks about proper table manners. Certain to be popular reading for children K-3, Harvey Green The Eating Machine is a good choice for school and community library picture book collections.

The illustrations are fantastic and the story is wonderful! I love Harvey's rules of table manners!
I do the childrens' storytimes at our local library and I have bought this book to donate to the children's department...I don't want to wait until the library orders it!
My grand-niece and nephew will also receive a copy!
