Long respected for its scientific authority, pedagogy, and clinical relevance to medical education, this comprehensive embryology text features outstanding illustrations and clear and concise writing. The brand-new Tenth Edition covers all aspects of embryology of interest to medical students and instructors and includes clinical correlates that provide information on birth defects and other clinical entities directly related to embryologic concepts. This extensively revised edition features new full-color photographs of clinical conditions and updated embryo images/photographs created using newer technologies. It also features new online USMLE-style review questions through Connection / The Point. A new introduction chapter on development includes molecular biology. This edition's larger page size improves readability. A bound-in CD-ROM, Simbryo, presents animations of embryologic system development.

2 out of 5 stars Almost there after only 10 editions!.......2007-09-24

EDIT: After thinking about it for a few days, I should have given this book 3 stars, but now I can't seem to change it.

So this is my book for my medical embryology course that I am taking right now, and I am extremely happy that I had an undergrad developmental biology course! It would be a pretty good book (4-5 stars) if it didn't contradict itself with little typos throughout. For example, in chapter 3, the secondary follicle is (wrongly) called a preantral follicle in a figure caption. In the text, the primary follicle is called a preantral follicle (which is correct). If you didn't know already, this book would just confuse you. In chapter 5, figure 5-4 will confuse you because figure 5-4b and 5-4c are reversed, both in the figure and in the caption. The effect of this error is a major one, leading you to believe that notochord development happens in a caudal to cranial direction when in fact it occurs in a cranial to caudal direction. In the text, it is stated correctly. Once again, if you don't know any better, you are just going to get confused by this book. Also, the editors must have been overly concerned with keeping the book small because the glossary of key terms doesn't even have definitions for primordial, primary, and secondary follicles. That is horrible for an embryology book!

Aside from the obvious lack of effort in editing, this book has several good things about it. Despite being a tiny book, there is a lot of information packed into very dense writing. Some parts do not flow very linearly, which can be confusing. Other areas of embryogenesis are written poorly (e.g. progression of the villi from primary to tertiary, changes in fetal/maternal blood circulation), but you can still manage to get the idea if you spend a little extra time on it. After slowly reading through, and barring any crazy typos, you will have a pretty clear and thorough picture of medical embryology. Also, The emphasis on clinical correlations is very nice and well written. There are many good figures for the clinical correlations (it is the other figures that are iffy, as described above). The CD that comes with the book is very nice too. It is cartoonish, but it animates VERY clearly what is going on during different embryonic periods of development.

All in all, this book is worth getting. Just remember to be cautious of errors, especially in the figures. Maybe by the 11th edition all the kinks will finally get worked out.

5 out of 5 stars Langman's embriology.......2007-07-29

Great detail and clearly explained. Can be a little dense if no previous embryology knowledge. Clearly explained clinical correlations and pathologies. Detailed diagrams and pictures, and the interactive cd that comes with it is great for giving an overall view of the process. An excellent buy

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars skimable.......2007-05-24

i skimmed through this book for my step 1 because some of its contents not necessary or were found in other books such as high yiel histo or anatomy and first aid.good to skim through for the boards, but if u dont have time first aid is a perfect alternate.Even if you decide to use this book, dont use it alone, use it with first aid, which was what i did. i ended up making a 229/95 in my step 1.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Review for a low yield subject on the Boards.......2007-03-31

This is much more concise than the new version. This little book helps you put the H.Y. facts of embryo together not just as a subject on its own but in conjunction to pathology. I would specially recommend the first 3 chapters to get a quick idea of embryo genesis and the cardio, respiratory, GI sections for quick kill on the congenital abnormalities that are extensively talked about in Pathology. I particularly recommend to read the latter chapters alongside with Goljan's Rapid Review Pathology.

4 out of 5 stars this is like a mini review book for all subjects........2007-01-26

This book has information from different subjects, such as pathology, genetics, anatomy, physiology etc. I like the fact that it has lots of clinical correlations which link from different areas. some contents are repeated under different subjects in different chapters, I personally think that it enhances memory, some may find it to be redundant.

This book does have a little extra information which may not be required for step 1 exam. However, I think that it may be good for review or for the course study.

This book has a little too much information about genetics from chapter 21 to 24. For example, for spinocerebellar ataxia, it listed six types, SCA 1, 2, 3, 6, 7 and 17. Each has a separate paragraph with detailed gene abnormality. After all, this is an embryology book, not a genetic book.

3 out of 5 stars its OKK.......2006-07-04

i read this book for usmle prep...it was pretty good...but had way too much information for usmle 1....i would reccomend using FA's embryo section as a guide...and read only sections in high yield that are represented in first aid(FA)...over all decent book...but overkill for usmle 1...

5 out of 5 stars Great summary!.......2005-10-13

This book nicely complemented my Gross Anatomy and Embryology class and reiterated/clarified concepts that were conveyed in lecture. It also portrays great pictures of actual clinical cases. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!

Book Description

The on-going core of this atlas is its standard of realistic illustrations that portray anatomical relationships. Photographs of actual cadaver dissections along with numerous schematic drawings aid the student in anatomic orientation. Chapters are organized by region, in order of a typical dissection. Each chapter contains two sections: a description and illustration of organs, and a depiction of those organs within the regional anatomy. New to this edition is an increase of MRI pictures, approximately 30 schematic drawings made even more precise, and an updated text where appropriate. A Brandon-Hill recommended title.

I consider this book to be a must for any anatomy student. The pictures are exactly what you will see when you enter the lab.

5 out of 5 stars love this book.......2007-03-28

In case it isn't clear from the description or title, this is an anatomy atlas made up of photos of actual human bodies. I don't know why we didn't have this in A&P. Fascinating, and a nicely produced book as well.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK, EVEN GREATER IF YOU OWN ONE!!!!!!!!!.......2006-03-26

AM A SECOND YEAR STUDENT OF ANATOMY, AND AM GOING INTO THE RADIOGRAPHER TECH PROGRAM AT MY SHCOOL I JUST BOUGHT THIS BOOK AFTER SEEING IT, AFTER SOMEONE BOUGHT IT. SO I ORDERED MY OWN COPY, AND AM TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY BY THE PERCISION OF THE BOOKS DETAIL ON EVERY SINGLE PHOTOGRAPH. I THINK THIS WILL BE A DEFINATE KEEPER, AND IF YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE PRICE WITH A SIGH, DON'T JUST GET IT AND ENJOY!~

Also recommended: ALSO STRONGLY RECOMMEND THE COLOR ATLAS OF HUMAN ANATOMY by Wolf-Heidegger!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Two sided ..........2006-03-25

My opinion about this book is a bit two sided and that's why:
I bought this one for my first year medical anatomy course and was a little mystified by it, at least at the beginning. I couldn't really understand what is going on in the corpse and as I looked into this book the sight was "cleaner" but similar. Naturally I put it away for a while and used Netter which was excellent.
A while after I became familiar with gross anatomical structures I opened it again, and only then I undestood what is going on inside, and only then I understood how great this book is!
Especially nice and logical where the drawings and explanations included.
Thus, my conclusion is that this book can be a great find for a student who has already taken the course, for a review or other purpose, but for a true beginner in this field it is almost the same as looking at the body.
In my opinion, to make an Atlas understandable for the beginner, it must NOT be real but must present the human body as seen through the eyes of the student. This job is perfectly done by Netter.

5 out of 5 stars A great anatomy text.......2005-09-29

I agree completely with the review by Gerald J. Nora. The book is first rate and does a fantastic job of showing the "real" anatomy as opposed to drawings where the artist takes some liberties. The text begins simple and builds upon it. The only down side is that the labels are not ordered in a top down fashion. For example, the labels may be: 3, 2, 4, 8, 7, 6, 5 which can be confusing. Overall the book is highly recommended as a reference to a traditional anatomy text.

4 out of 5 stars Good resource material for clinical genetics.......2007-08-25

Nice guidebook to have to help you study cases of human malformation. Each syndrome comes with text information and corresponding pictures. The pictures help you relate a particular syndrome with actual patients. It also has an index which shows some of the more common dysmorphic features that you may see and lists the syndromes that usually present with these features. The only drawback is that the information about some syndromes are sometimes lacking, so you will need another reference to expound on these cases.

This a great book with fantastic illustration of genetic diseases, a must for all in the genetic field.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable.......2007-08-07

Smith's Recognizable Patterns Of Human Malformation has always been one of the best textbooks for those health professionals who study and work on diagnosis or research in dismorphology, mainly pediatricians, pathologists and geneticists. Its 6th edition is 100% improved regarding illustrations, with nice color pictures as well as updated references and new concepts. Indispensable.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must have reference for pediatricians.......2007-07-23

This is a totally new book. I purchased the fourth edition about 15 years ago. A long way has elapsed for medicine, pediatrics and genetics. This new edition incorporated all the new advances in the field of molecular genetics. Although the genetic syndromes are explained in the classic form, with Abnormalities, Natural History and Etiology, the recent advances in genomic medicine are fully explained for each genetic syndrome or disease. Also the pictures are now in color, they have always been great pictures but now with the color they bring much more to clarity and teaching. I like very much this book, not only because the depth and comprehensive review but because it is indeed a perfect picture of what has changed in the last years, and indeed, it is a new world, particularly in the field of genetics.

3 out of 5 stars Return to Previous Edition .......2007-02-28

Moore and Persaud have a great book in the Sixth Edition. I think the 7th edition was put together by a mad computer scientist who was unable to coordinate text with graphics, and mixed up overlays between illustrations. With that said, I would purchase and use the sixth edition for test prep and review. It is a standard, excellent text, and the first seven chapters give a easily readable blow by blow of the developing human. Toss the 7th Edition; use it to warm your hands by the fire as you go back to the sixth edition and learn something. My .02.

1 out of 5 stars Quite possibly the worst text I have ever owned........2006-11-27

Although the information in the book is extensive, the organization makes it quite difficult to learn. The publisher would do themselve a favor to reorganize the book such that diagrams are readily available with the corresponding text, and to supply more thorough labels. There are typos in the book; unacceptable for any medical text.

4 out of 5 stars Well written and great resource for experienced readers.......2006-08-15

This is an excellent embryology text IF you already have some background in medical anatomy, morphology, or embryology. Otherwise I reccomend "Before we are born" by the same authors. Same information but less dense and more easily read by a lay audience. The Developing Human is a very dense text and it has excellent clinical correlations in each chapter. This is a book intended for medical or graduate students, so be pack your lunch before sitting down to go through a chapter. I like the illustrations, but some of them (the cross sections) will require a bit of mental gymnastics before they become clear - but once you get it, they are a very helpful way to understand how the 3D structures are being represented. The new edition has expanded some chapters, simplified SOME of the concepts, and most importantly, it keeps current with new developments in the field and nomenclature. I teach medical gross anatomy, embryology, and musculoskeletal system courses to first year medical students.

2 out of 5 stars ok.......2006-03-27

this book has many illistrations, however, they are difficult to understand and many are pages away from in info being discussed, also this book requires a strong anatomy background

    Book Description

The fourth volume in the Atlas of Human Central Nervous System Development series, The Human Brain During the Late First Trimester provides new information about features of the perinatal brain. It deals with brain development during the late first trimester (GW11-GW7.5). The major theme of this volume is the identification of stretches and patches (mosaics) of the NEP matrix along the hypertrophied telencephalic, diencephalic, mesencephalic, and rhombencephalic superventricles. Many putative migratory paths of young nerons on their way to their settling sites are also identified. In the younger specimens, the brain sections are presented as they are embedded in the skull and developing facial structures. The older specimens show the onset of development of some of the large fiber tracts. Like the rest of the series, it contains photographs of the entire brain arranged in companion plates that include two parts: a large, high resolution black and white photograph and a "ghost image" of the photograph with unabbreviated labels. It is a user-friendly survey of the complex structural processes that occur during human CNS development. This volume can be purchased as part of the complete five volume set.

    4 out of 5 stars A good book.......2007-05-12

It's a good book and the content is clearly presented. At the beginning, there is an introdutory part that summarizes the content of each chapter and helps the reader understanding. The pictures are very helpful and understanding them is an important step for the best knowledgement of the embrionary development. It's also important to know the molecular bases of the changes in the embrionary period, which is explained in some texts at the end of the chapters.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent graphics.......2006-06-13

Although the text is dense, this book has the best graphics of the various embryo books I've used. The timeline for each system (heart, nervous, etc.) is extremely useful in trying to understand what happens when (one of the most confusing aspects of embryo for the beginner). I kept going back to this book when reviewing for Step 1, if I needed a quick answer or a good visual.

I'd recommend using the free tutorials/animations available on the Indiana University website to supplement this textbook.

5 out of 5 stars Larsen's is an excellent textbook for students.......2004-01-04

I am research scientist (in neurobiology) and have used this textbook during a first-year medical school gross anatomy/embryology course and found it to be an extremely helpful companion to the instructor's lectures. I would highly recommend it to any instructor, medical student or resident, graduate student, or even to undergraduate Biology majors, although this book would probably be too advanced and technical for anyone else. I still have it on my bookshelf and it continues to be a handy reference for looking up answers to questions that come up.

So, WHY do I Iike this book so much? Embryology can be a challenging subject because it involves learning not only about 3-dimensional aspects of anatomy etc but changes in those 3-D features over time. The most valuable feature of this textbook -- for me at least -- is the great number and quality of color illustrations along with lots of photo images from a variety of imaging technologies (scans, microscopic, etc). There is a limit to what authors can describe in words alone and this book proves the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. The writing is generally clear and concise, if a little dense at times due to the authors' strict adherence to a medical style of writing as well as medical terminology. Another helpful feature is the use of timelines in multiple parts of the book (intro, appendix, within chapters). Overall, the organization is pretty good: after the earliest milestones of development are covered, the chapters are then organized by organ or functional system, which means that successive chapters are often not in chronological order. Instead , adjacent chapters often discuss events that happen at different weeks, overlapping weeks, or sometimes during the same time-window. To some readers, this might seem like an odd way to organize things, but trust me it would be much more bewildering -- and practically impossible -- to do a chronological format and cover every system in each chapter, for instance in a chapter on "the 5th month", "6th month", etc. Brief mention of a few other features: 1) lots of "box" format descriptions of clinical disorders of embryological development at various stages (e.g. spina bifida), 2) includes some material on genetic and molecular biological aspects of development, 3) describes techniques used by researchers studying human and animal embryology.

Cautionary note: this text deliberately does NOT emphasize any particular organ/functional system, since it's aimed mainly toward medical students. If, for example, you're looking for in-depth coverage of the developmental biology of the brain/nervous system, you'll need to find a more specialized book . Also, for readers who prefer verbal/text presentation and don't find visuals all that helpful, I'd refer them to a different book that I've used and also shows up in a search for "embryology" titles at Amazon.com -- "Langman's Human Embryology" by Thomas Sadler.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, essential to pass embryology material.......2003-03-27

This book covers the basics of embryology including outstanding diagrams. In places, it has too much detail, but it is very well written and the illustrations (essential for learning embryology) are beautiful.

    4 out of 5 stars Larsen'Human Embryology.......2000-03-07

I am professor of Embryology and I like this book because it covers all the itens. This is an update book: It covers the molecular aspects of this beautifull science.

4 out of 5 stars Good overall review.......2007-09-26

Works well for those who have already studied the material in a textbook and are just reviewing the basics.

4 out of 5 stars not enough detail.......2007-03-17

This is a great review, but just does not have enough information. I wish it had more diagrams and more details. Reading this review does not help me understand the processes of embryology.

    5 out of 5 stars BRS Embryology.......2003-01-15

The BRS for Embryology was a supplemental text that I found incredibly helpful. The book helps to make even the most confusing development stages easy to understand and learn. It helps to weed through the details and focus on the main concepts. I found this book to be truly helpful in studying and preparing for med school exams for my first year. I would recommend this to any student who feels confused or overwhelmed by developmental anatomy.

5 out of 5 stars excellent and time saving.......2000-08-20

a fantastic review of embryology.Out of 7 to 10 average embryology questions that appear on step1,this book easily helps you to answer 80 to 100%of them.A high yield book for a less represented subject.
