Customer Reviews:
Good book as foundation for medical microbiology students.......2003-11-13
I used this as one of my required texts for my microbiology class in med school. It had very good sections on parasitology, viruses, etc. It was fun learning the what parasites are endemic to certain regions of the world and what symptoms they cause. I was used the following: Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi. This second book was great because it was thorough in the aspects of test preparation in these various ways: it helped me prepare for the type of questions asked by my microbiology professor. In this way when I was studying I knew which facts to study harder and to know better. I easily got in the top 1% of my medical microbiology in grades with the help of these two books. I give each book five stars.
Too much information.......2000-08-07
This book offers a very comprehensive look at microbiology and virology (with some immunology and parasitology thrown in); unfortunately, that's not a good thing if you're trying to study from it. The chapters are full of information on lab values and other minutiae that will be of interest to only those who make a living in the field. Otherwise, you'll have to search hard to pick out the relevant details that are worth remembering. There are definitely better, easier to use books on the market than this one
It's a modern and exact book.......1998-08-22
This edition have news about micobiology.
good for 2nd yr med school micro - but short on clin. stuff.......1997-12-21
depending on the focus of your course, this might not have enough clinical case-related material. Great for the "big flick" with a very well laid out presentation (not enough pix or graphs), very good overall. Lot's of people in my class chose the Appleton and Lange (same publisher) 'Review" version of this book (blue cover).
Average customer rating:
- Extremely basic, but hard to follow

Customer Reviews:
Extremely basic, but hard to follow.......2005-12-09
This text was a real disappointment to me. Having taught microbiology for a number of years and looking for something to expand my understanding and knowledge of the field of virology, I was sorry that I added this book to my reference library. All in all, I found it to be poorly written and only slightly informative; at least from my perspective.
Unorganized, Too Wordy, and Confusing.......2003-09-26
The information is not coherent and is scattered all over the place. Points that could be made in one sentence are stretched out over many paragraphs. Furthermore, the usage of words are often inappropriate in many cases (looks like the authors just ran a thesaurus check) which makes the text very confusing. This book is definitely not recommended for someone without a background in Virology.
A Great Textbook.......2002-12-02
This is a great book! The method at which the material is presented rivals that of medical textbooks. The graphics and illustration are great! Go UC Irvine! Spcial Events Parking Rocks!
A good investment for any microbiology student........2000-06-14
The information presented in this book was very helpful in my understanding of virology. The text was very easily followed and subjects presented in a straightforward manner. Basic Virology is a must have!

Book Description
Molecular Biology of the Hepatitis B Virus presents a comprehensive account of the various molecular aspects of the life cycle of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Topics covered include the animal model systems, sequence data on the hepadnavirus genomes, the transcripts coded for the biral genome and sequence elements involved in regulating their expression, hepadnavirus replication, and analysis of the various HBV gene products and their role in virion synthesis and assembly. Other important features of the book include its discussions of the consequences of long term exposure to hepadnavirus infection and its association with hepatocellular carcinoma, the use of recombinant technologies in the generation of second generation vaccines, and the utilization of recombinant technologies to analyze an immune mediated disease. Researchers studying hepadnaviruses will find a wealth of information in this essential reference volume.

Inferring Phylogenies
ASIN: 0801861500 |
Book Description
The HIV epidemic has spawned a scientific effort unprecedented in the history of infectious disease research. This effort has merged aspects of clinical research, basic molecular biology, immunology, cell biology, epidemiology, and mathematical biology in ways that have not been seen before. In The Evolution of HIV Keith A. Crandall brings together researchers from these disciplines to present perspectives on both the molecular biology and molecular evolution of HIV.
The book is organized into three sections: "Introduction to HIV" explores the fundamentals of the virus's molecular biology and its global diversity. "Molecular Methods for Studying HIV Diversity" looks at such topics as HIV phylogenetics, modeling the molecular evolution of HIV sequences, the use of phylogenetic inference to test an HIV transmission hypothesis, and coalescent approaches to HIV population genetics. The third section,"Case Studies of HIV Evolution" examines the levels of diversity within and among host individuals, the phylogenetics of known transmission histories, and HIV evolution and disease progression via longitudinal studies.
The book will be of interest to researchers and clinicians working on HIV, as well as scientists studying molecular evolution, population genetics, and evolutionary biology. Contributors are John M. Coffin, Keith A. Crandall, Joseph Felsenstein, Walter M. Fitch, Brian Foley, Esther Guzman, Paul H. Harvey, David M. Hillis, Edward C. Holmes, Marcia L. Kalish, Bette T. M.
