Poor Organization and Boring .......2007-09-25
My biggest problem with this book lies directly with the fact that teachers use it when you BEGIN learning the basics of anatomy and physiology. Instead of focusing on the basics, this book has a lot of unnecessary "window-dressing". Not only that, but the author could have shortened the explanations; why talk about a topic in 10 pages when it could easily be said in 3?
By going on and on, this book only makes remembering the information more difficult. The book says "Fundamentals", but really it should be saying "Everything-in-Between"! Not to mention the price is horrendous (though it has gotten much better). PLEASE college teachers, if you wish to help your students learn efficiently, use a book that doesn't turn the subject of anatomy and physiology into a bore-and-tedium fest.
Want to save money?.......2007-09-09
This book is incredibly expensive. I've seen it listed for $200+ at some stores. I bought a brand new, shrink-wrapped "international version" for $37 plus $30 shipping (TOTAL $67). I know you're thinking that the shipping was high, but I received the book 36 hours after I ordered it and was thankful! It came with 3 sealed CD's and the online access code. The international version appears to be exactly the same except it is a soft cover and has a orange colored border surrounding that same picture on the cover. Good luck.
WOW.......2007-06-13
I'VE NEVER SEEN SO MUCH INFORMATION CRAMMED INTO ONE BOOK!
DO NOT EXPECT TO RECEIVE WHAT YOUR ARE PROMISED FOR YOUR PURCHASE.......2007-01-19
I purchased this book NEW and in good faith & because it was the title required for my anatomy class. (from the college bookstore)
The company NEVER made good on their promise to allow me access to use their website. They provided the professor an invalid access code.
I can only have access if I send them MORE money to purchase access.
I ALREADY GAVE THEM 150+ for the NEW text, lab manual, cd's & entry into their website. It feels like I am being SCAMMED although I am pretty sure this is not their intention.
I am 1/3 of the way done w/the book & class & DISSAPPOINTED W/MY PURCHASE.
I HOPE TEACHERS FIND AN ALTERNATIVE BOOK TO REQUIRE FOR A&P CLASS.
if you have to throw away $150..........2006-07-25
If you actually buy this book you're paying for the illustrations. Don't waste your time actually reading it, the presentation of the material is ponderous and completely unimaginative. The chapter on immunology is one of the worst I've seen anywhere.
The COVER of the book speaks volumes for its content. I'd be afraid to be seen in public with it.
Book Description
FUNDAMENTALS OF PHYSIOLOGY, Third Edition, is based on Lauralee Sherwood's best selling Fifth Edition of HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY: FROM CELLS TO SYSTEMS. While both texts cover the same key topics in a current, engaging, and clinically relevant manner, FUNDAMENTALS OF PHYSIOLOGY is briefer, lower in level, and requires less of a background in chemistry, physics, and math than its sister text. Essential content is organized around the central theme of homeostasis, as demonstrated by the system-specific homeostatic model that opens each chapter, as well as the "Focus on Homeostasis" that completes each chapter. New to this edition are process-oriented figures, created to aid today's visual learners. These figures include step-by-step descriptions summarizing and integrating various aspects of essential concepts. Another noteworthy addition is the comparative and early introduction of "Principles of Neural and Hormonal Communication"-a NEW Chapter 4. This edition also showcases an emphasis on real-life experiences, using analogies as well as new "Clinical Note" icons, which flag clinically relevant material. The text is also supported by PhysioEdge 2-arguably the best student CD-ROM on the market-which ties concepts and art together with narration and animation. This free CD-ROM has been revised to include new media exercises and tutorials, and is integrated with this Third Edition to encourage students make optimal use of the available media. Instructors are likely to find indispensable our Multimedia Manager with Instructor Resources-a CD containing ALL line art from the text, over 40 animations, electronic versions of instructor materials, and Microsoft® PowerPoint® lectures.

Excellent starting text.......2007-02-12
Underlying the broad study of physiology lies several important principles; unless these are appreciated, studying physiology can prove to be difficult, time-consuming, and ultimately an experience you'd rather forget.
Often in the hope of gaining a complete understanding of physiology, students will make the mistake of trying to attack the bigger/detailed texts such as guyton, ganong, and berne& levy. Unfortunately these books (particularly the latter two) are quite advanced and detailed, possessing a lot of minutiae. These books are useful for postgrads in science or for those sitting medical specialty exams. What you need if you're starting out in physiology is a book that clearly emphasises the principles, and avoids swamping you with detail that will quickly erase your appreciation of the big picture (your examiners will reward such perspective, and not the regurgitation of random facts! - the same is true for all areas of study). Sherwood does an amazing job of providing this information at just the right level for the beginner, laying down a solid foundation for further learning. I recommend using this as a primary text and consulting the other heavy weights for the fine print if your course syllabus (or thirst for knowledge!) requires this.
A simple and straightforward text........2007-01-06
This is a very simple textbook. The content is clearly geared toward the beginner in biology, and the text could even be well-recieved and understood by nonscientists. That said, I think the book functions best (oddly) as material for upperclassmen in biology. The scarcity of detail - intended to make the book easier for the lay reader - actually serves the advanced student nicely by avoiding repitition of concepts already thoroughly covered in other courses. This is a physiology text which covers exactly that: physiology. It gets tiring after several years of schooling in biology to deal with all the overlap between classes (I cannot count the number of times I have had to memorize the reactions of the glycolytic pathway, for example), and this book avoids that. Overall, its a great rundown of the important concepts in human physiology, and would probably make a nice refresher for someone who took physiology in the distant past.
Doesn't stand alone........2000-05-31
This text was informative for the student just begining their anatomy and physiology education. However I believe it was put to best use when combined with another anatomy text (i.e.Tortora's Principles of Human Anatomy). These two texts are a powerhouse of information. They play well off of eachother. Where Tortora lacks in technical explanation and precise description Sherwood excells. Where Sherwood fails in graphic visual description Tortora more than makes up the difference. As a visual learner it was difficult to fully grasp certain concepts without another text to refer to. I believe for someone who learns best from verbal description this book would be incredibly beneficial. I used this text in a community college, pre-nursing, anatomy and physiology course and although it was helpful, it provided more of a complete picture when combined with the other text (Tortora). Overall I did find it more helpful as a reference resource than a teaching tool.

DON'T DO IT TO YOURSELF IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO..........2006-03-01
This is the most horribly written book with wordy descriptions and it would take about 10 pages to make one simple point. I suffered through the 6th edition for Anatomy 1 and 2. At the end of Anatomy 2, I brought that demon outside, poured perfume over it, and had a bonfire. I watched it burn and was happy to see it go. Any updated edition would only be more suffering. If the drop screen allowed me to give negative 10, I would have done so, gladly.

Customer Reviews:
The best advanced text on the market.......2005-10-06
This textbook is a very detailed and very up-to-date exposition of Neuroscience, and in my view, for the more advanced student it is one of the best books out there. What it is NOT is a simple, concise introduction for people who are studying the nervous system for the first time. If you are taking an entry-level Neuroscience course you are likely to be overwhelmed by the amount of detail, and, like some of the other reviewers who gave this book a bad rap, might blame the book for the fact that you can only take in so much detail in a first sitting, and fail to see the forest for all the trees. So if you are new to Neuroscience, read something like Bear et al "Neuroscience - Exploring the Brain" first, and only once you have absorbed that, turn to this beautifully detailed book for a much closer look at the subject. The chapters on Vision by Clay Reid and the Hearing chapters by Brown in this book are quite simply and without a doubt among the best textbook chapters on these topics anywhere, (and much better than anything you will find in Kandel!)
Most up-to-date text on the market.......2005-03-28
I'm a clinical academic neurologist with an MS in neuroscience some 25 years ago, and I decided to read through this text as a means of bringing myself up-to-date in the field. This textbook accomplished that task admirably. I will agree with some critics that parts of it were far too detailed, especially the sections on molecular neurobiology, where too often things got bogged down with discussions of a protein's biophysical properties, for example. Another caveat is that there are some production defects--the pages around 200 are not in the right order, and I found a few diagrams that were mislabelled. But the illustrations are really gorgeous. I've made extensive use of the CD, which contains all the figures and their legends, for Power Point presentations to the neurology residents I teach. I would suggest that future editions of the CD incorporate some videos and animated diagrams that could better illustrate some concepts, e.g., details of signal transduction, which is REALLY complex and was hard to follow in the text. But Kandels text is now several years older and as the pace of neuroscience is so incredibly rapid, this text contains more of the latest info.
Too detailed.......2002-05-29
This text is not appropiate for any for introductory class to neuroscience at any level (whether grad or undergrad). The depth and detail leaves the reader confused at best. Perhaps it is suitable for an advanced gradute seeking to remedy any detail oriented holes. For all others, it is a precursor to a headache.
The smart money would go with the Kandel who clearly defines
his purpose at the outset of his classic book.
(I notice that the reviewer ,who bestowed the text 4 stars, and the author both call San Diego their home.)
Truly Fundamental!.......2001-04-22
I was rather lucky to take my chances and go-for-a-buy for this title instead of the much more cited "Kandel-Fourth Edition"... The book is really awesome, well-written and edited, with many good first-time-seen illustrations. It spans the whole field of contemporary Neuroscience (from biochemical to cognitive and clinical) with extreme efficacy and reference. The authors did a great job integrating the contents of each section with clarifying examples and extensive references, making it ideal even for new-comers. As a medical student with research interests in this vast field, I was very pleased with my decision to buy this textbook.
A must in any med-school.......2000-08-20
This book can make any person understand the basic aspects of Pathology, it requires a good level of Histology knowledge ( not more than a good approach of the previous course ). Excellent images and explanations make this issue a good purchase.
The only drawback I've found is the fancy words the authors use to define something it's easy to understand, but after all I think it's a vey good choice.
Book Description
* The most up-to-date and comprehensive coverage of the relationship of brain function and neuroactive chemicals

Great!.......2007-09-23
This book is very well written and interesting, discussing neuropharmocology from molecular, cellular, and biochemical bases as well as physiologically and socially.
Highly recommended.......2006-08-16
Great review of neuroscience from the pharmacological viewpoint. Thorough, systematic explanations of neurotransmitter systems up to higher brain functions. Highlights drugs that affect each system in the text. Begins with basic review of pharmacology and neuroscience for those who don't have solid footing there. Language is clear and easy to read, contains main points on first page of each chapter and selected reading at the end.
This is your brain on drugs, endogenous or otherwise........2004-06-22
Anyone who wants an understanding of how the brain works at the molecular level should read this excellent, succinct text. I recommend it to anesthesiologists in particular since we parctice in brain-neuropharmacology daily.
Highly Recommended!.......2002-05-02

A & P book review.......2006-07-10
Book is in pretty good condition with slightly bent edges as is nearly every used book. The spin is not damaged and all of the pages are intact. Nothing is highlighted in the book.
Fantastic Book.......2005-04-09
I have to say, I used the 5th edition of this book and know that the 6th is better as I worked with another student who had the 6th edition. EVERYbody who wants to know, particulary physiology, should have this book for reference. The anatomy is also excellent particular the discussions on vascular and the venous / arterial systems and the nervous system discussions are clear!. I reference this book all the time.
Great Book.......2005-01-22
I'm taking Human Anatomy now in college and LOVE IT!!! This book is great and makes learning fun. The human atlas that comes with the book is great for when you have to learn all the bones and it has some cool pictures. I recommend this book to anyone interested in Anatomy.
GREAT Customer Service and SPEEDY.......2004-12-16
I ordered this textbook for my daughter for Christmas. It arriveed at my doorstep within 6 days of putting the order online! It was in great shape, exactly what I wanted, and short turnaround time! I will definitely order from this company again. They were great!
Good Book.......2004-06-06
This is a good book for college anatomy and physiology. It is very thorough and descriptive. Goes in depth into nervous, muscular, skeletal and endocrine systems to name a few. I also recommend Key Facts of Anatomy and Physiology isbn;0971999694. This last book shows you what's important to study for. Both books highly recommended.
Book Description
Human movement influences an individual's perceptions and ability to interact with the world. Through exercises, illustrations, and detailed anatomical drawings, this remarkable book guides the reader toward total body integration. An experimental approach to movement fundamentals involving the patterning of connections in the body according to principles of efficient movement, the process of total body integration encourages personal expression and full psychological involvement. Such work, begun by Irmgard Bartenieff and now known as Bartenieff's Fundamentals, is developed by Peggy Hackney, one of Bartenieff's close colleagues, in Making Connections. By examining what is truly fundamental in human movement, Hackney's pioneering study explores inner connections through specific body movements and shares the process for releasing the sensations and feelings that such movements bring forth.
Customer Reviews:
add another dimension to any movement.......2007-03-14
This book makes any movement--whether it be yoga, Pilates or just walking down the street--better understood and the analogies to how one carries one's self in the world and relates is interesting. It is also very well written and easy to follow. I like it because I came to Pilates etc from being more of an athlete... this can make anyone feel like a dancer and can lend to the practice of any movement, even by athletes!! (You will also see that what some of your teachers in whatever mind-body discipline you are studying might not be attributing to Bartinieff/Laban are well just that!)
No opinion.......2007-03-08
This book was purchased for my granddaughter who is attending Texas Womens University. So I can't help you.
Excellent Source.......2007-01-19
Coming from the background of a dancer and Bachelor of Science in kinesiology, I found that this book was an excellent source to further combine and enhance my knowledge in both of these fields. Presently, I am in a graduate dance program and assisting with Bartenieff Fundamentals. This book works perfectly for any Bartenieff Fundamentals, Experiential Anatomy, Technique, and/or Pedagogy course. It is easy to read, and I can quickly find simple and beneficial exercises to use in the classroom and to prepare my body for dance and daily life.
