My three year old twins love this book!

Highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2006-11-29

I ordered this item to give as a gift, taking a chance that it would be as good as was reviewed here. I was DELIGHTED! This is a wonderful book for ANY child ages 4 to 12, I'd guess. Actually, I'm 34 and found it fascinating. The text is interesting, font not too small, not too technical or wordy. The mix of photos and models is just right. They have lots of interesting facts throughout, also. Did you know your hair can grow for up to 7 years before falling out? The writer puts amounts in ways a child can understand. For instance, the amount of blood in a baby verses a 10 year old, verses an adult is shown in bottles of red liquid next to a photo of that age person. Stunning photos of developing fetuses, pictures of white blood cells "eating" germs, and much more make this a terrific buy! We need to order ourselves a copy now. I let my kids look at it with me before we mail it to their cousin. We spent a half hour entranced before I realized we better mail it, or it would look like a used book! Buy it. You may want to get two copies!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Wealth of Info.......2006-06-03

This is the only kids encyclopedia I own and we love it. I got it as a unit study for the summer for my 6.5 yo dd who is going into 2nd grade. It is perfect for her. She asks so many questions they days and this really gets and keeps her interested for hours!!! It has lots of wonderful pictures and diagrams and even a few ideas to try as well! IMHO it is a great buy!

5 out of 5 stars The Book that made my Daughter want to become a Doctor........2006-05-12

My 3+ year old daughter and I checked this out of the library. As soon as we did we had to look and read it numberous times during the day and before bed. She is down right passionate about it.

When I had to return it to the library she cried very hard so I bought her a copy for Valentine's day.

Since seeing and reading this wonderful book my daughter is determined to become a doctor. She wants to read as many body books as she possibily can so that's what I have been buying her. I've learned much about the body myself.

I think these DK books are wonderful for kids with all the photographs plus text. They are books that provide information in such a way that as they grow through the years they can learn more and more from the same book.

5 out of 5 stars Very, very good!.......2006-04-25

This book is wonderful. I looked at a TON of human body books for my first grader. It seemed nearly impossible to find one for the 5-8 year old crowd that was factually thorough and had real photographs, but that wasn't too in-depth or too advanced in vocabulary. So many books for this age group are just plain simplistic and cartoony and don't do justice to the amazing machines our bodies are!

Since my dd is highly visual, the pictures are important to us and this book slam-dunks in that category (as usual for DK). Every major body system is covered, as well as a few things you might not think to teach a Kinder to 3rd grader, like allergies and non-verbal communication. My dd LOVED the section on the circulatory system and the real-life photos of the components of blood held her interest in a major way.

I highly recommend this for a classical homeschooling family (for first grade) or just for any parent with kids who want to know how their bodies work.

This book is easy for my 6 yr old to understand. We are using it for our science book and she is loving it!!

5 out of 5 stars Most excellent purchase!.......2006-04-15

I actually first looked at this book just because it only had a one star rating and I wondered why. When I learned that, it was because it had children's level sex ed I bought it immediately. My 5 year old was trying to figure out what a birthday was for and I needed a little visual assist to help him understand that he came from my belly on that day. Really, the sex ed of this book is perfect for small children. It shows a big blow up of an egg surrounded by sperm. It has two basic anatomy drawings of what is in a woman and what is in a man with no deep detail; they are small and dull in comparison to the Sperm and Egg multicolor blow up of a microscope picture. It shows on the next two pages a baby developing in the womb. It's just drawings and it has an ultra sound of the profile of a baby's head. Nothing about how the baby gets in there, nothing about how it comes out, just very basic things a small child can understand (I highly recommend it for the 5 year old set). It is very colorful and shows much of the anatomy in relation to children's bodies.
The whole book is wonderful. It is drawings and pictures of all the major systems of the body. They are detailed enough that you can see all the stuff that is under our skin, but it is written simply. On the muscles of the face, rather than name them they say, "These muscles make you blink, these muscles make you smile." Very kid friendly and related to questions kids will ask. This is good for a beginner reader who is old enough to be curious about how the body works. It also has little boxes at the bottom of many pages with experiments that kids can do to give hands on visuals about the lessons presented. My son has been fascinated by it since it arrived and looks through it at least once a day. He spends time marveling at the pictures and how cool people are on the inside. There is nothing gruesome in it though it does broach things like available artificial body parts. I guess it could be useful in explaining Grandma or Grandpa's operation. What I like the most is, it has real anatomical pictures with captions that are kid friendly and easy to understand. I highly recommend this for small children so long as you are comfortable with them knowing about all of their body parts and not just some of them.

1 out of 5 stars Reproductive chapter is way to descriptive.......2005-09-16

My 9 year old son, a forth grader, brought this book home from his school library. If you could have seen his face and then mine as he read aloud the chapter on reproduction. I would not have to say anymore about the book. Let's just say I now have to have "The Talk" with my nine year old son, when this should have waited until he was at least 11 or 12. I thought it was completely inappropriate, very explicate and way to descriptive to put this info in a childs book. The front cover is very misleading, it makes it look like just another fun human body book that he likes to read. It also should not be called the "First" Human Body Encyclopedia, it should say the "Middle School Childs" Human Body Encyclopedia. This would have been a great book, full of great information for any child to read if not for that one chapter. I'm very upset.

5 out of 5 stars I SING THE BODY ELECTRIC.......2003-02-18

I'm constantly amazed by the consistently excellent educational book front-list from British publisher Dorling Kindersley. No other mass-market publisher comes close to producing non-fiction books of such quality, scope, sophistication, visual excitement and sheer readability. When DK Publishing tackles a subject, it's done right, typically by a hand-picked team of editorial professionals and topic experts, as is the case with their latest desk reference book, "DK Encyclopedia of the Human Body." Here a team of medical experts provided the massive data contained in the tome's 300-plus pages. Then a team of authors and editors groomed the text into DK's characteristic style by outlining subject heads and breaking down information into easily-digested sub-sections, each with a corresponding image. There are more than 900 full-color photographs, illustrations, charts and diagrams here, all mesmerizingly revealing the workings of the human body in painstaking detail. Instead of listing subjects alphabetically in the standard style of most encyclopedias, here it is organized into related subject groupings, working parts, moving framework, control and sensation, supply and maintenance, and so on, and designed in concert with DK's uniquely eye-popping visuals. Timelines, charts and illustrated histories help put subjects into perspective and tidbits on leeches, motion sickness, head lice, and toilets will get the attention of even the most reluctant readers. Page after page, the detailed subject is presented clearly and concisely in such a riveting way that young students ages eight and up will not only find and comprehend the information they're seeking, but will become so absorbed that they'll surprisingly discover themselves reading for the sheer fun of it. For high school students, the encyclopedia is a particularly distinct and pleasurable alternative to dull textbooks, making this a must-have for every student's complete home library.

I purchased this when my now 6 yr old was 3. In the 3 years that we have owned it, (and we have TONS of books), this is the most beat-up and dog-eared book. Both my children love it. It is very informative without being too overwhelming. The illustrations make it all very understandable. It's one of those books that you can sit down and just focus on one page..or thumb through the whole thing. Because of this book, both my kids have a much better understanding of the human body than most other children their age. (Their grandfather, a surgeon, loves this!). 5 out of 5 stars A must!.......2004-01-04

Where do you go when you want to know something related to the human body, find out what cosmetic surgery is, or magnetic brain stimulation, or perhaps what is the Hinduism view of the body. Today answer is obviously: you log on the internet. The only problem is that you don't know how serious and reliable the information is across the variety of links. It can be good or bad. If you're not an expert, it's tough to decide, isn't?

Colin Blakemore and Sheila Jennett, two distinguished British Professors of Physiology, with the help of 350 experts, did a beautiful job in editing an authoritative and fascinating guide, which covers every aspect of the human body, including many that you would have never thought about. It includes an impressive range of academic domains (e.g., Anthropology, Medical Sciences, Psychology, Religion, Philosophy, Sociology to name a few) that makes the book captivating. In addition, this impressive knowledge is readily accessible to both the specialist and non-specialist reader.

The Oxford Companion to the Body is clearly a book that can have many different uses. It has its place in your school, college as well as in your lab. I myself have it as one of my favorite bedside reading, and given the number of pages (753) and issues covered (over 1000 entries), it's going to be a great companion for a long time.

2 out of 5 stars On the whole, a disappointment..........2004-01-11

Don't throw away your crumbling copies of the 1980 edition, folks, since much that was useful in that first edition has been deleted, and the newly added material shows neither the logical dispassion nor the entertainment value of what has been lost.

Looking only at the 'A's, the lively entries on "angel hair", "animal reactions to UFOs", the "Anolaima incident", the "Aurora airship hoax" and the "autokinetic effect" are all gone. The entry on "animal mutilations" remains unaltered, and badly requires updating. The enjoyable entry on the "Allende letters" has been heavily pruned. J. Richard Greenwell's interesting articles on "astronomers and UFOs" and "attitudes to UFOs" are gone. The loss of the latter is especially regrettable, since it was one of the few, highly tentative, approaches toward an analysis of the psychology of debunkers.

And it is the sceptics, for the most part, who have filled the space left by these excisions. The subjects they address are of potential interest ("mind control by aliens", "paranoia and UFOs", etc.) but several of the authors seem to see the whole thing as an occasion for an mildly sadistic romp, skewering their opponents' beliefs with barbed language and ad hominem arguments (one of the first things to strike this reader was how much nastier this new edition is, compared with the original).

For the most part these bullies do not compensate with valuable work of their own. Martin Kottmeyer is offered as an expert on the "psycho-social" aspects of UFOlogy, although his vague biographical entry mentions no training in either sociology or psychiatry: nevertheless, he will diagnose a paranoiac for you at the drop of a hat. His entry on UFO flaps is something of an embarrassment, as he expounds a pet theory that UFO reports follow episodes of national shame with evidence that may be politely described as equivocal. Kottmeyer also writes a lengthy article on "mind control" which spends more time on an episode of The Monkees' T.V. series than it does discussing actual government experiments.

Although Kottmeyer dominates any assessment of the defects of the new edition by the sheer volume of his contribution, mention must also be made of a tendency by some contributors (not all full-blown sceptics) to lean on the now dated work of Elizabeth Loftus, whose simplistic theorizing on the formation of memory was never so much a boon to science as it was to litigation.

Unfortunately there aren't any preferable alternatives to this volume at the present time. Jerome Clark's massive book appears to take a belief in the extraterrestrial hypothesis for granted. I would recommend retaining or locating a copy of the 1980 edition of Story's Encyclopedia; information on more recent developments can probably be found on the Internet without too much trouble. Nothing can compare with it for (relative) evenhandedness, variety of approach, and lack of histrionics.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat biased, but still valuable.......2003-02-07

A good reference tool for UFO buffs, just don't make it your only source of information.

Make sure you read the "skeptical" literature to get a balanced view of things: anything by Carl Sagan, Phil Klass, Robert Sheaffer, or Kal Korff.

5 out of 5 stars The Encyclopedia of Extraterrestrial Encounters.......2002-12-06

Such a cheap price, book was just as described in the ad. What a great seller! I HIGHLY RECCOMMEND!!!

4 out of 5 stars A superior UFO reference book..........2002-08-01

Although I would not agree that Ronald Story's "Encyclopedia of the Extraterrestrial" is the best reference book on UFO's, I would agree that it certainly comes close. Written in an "A-to-Z" format, this book covers just about every topic which can conceivably relate to the UFO phenomenon - from "Alien Abductions" to the "Bermuda Triangle" to "Crop Circles", and so on. It also has brief descriptions of virtually every major UFO incident in America since the summer of 1947, and it has the advantage of featuring the most recent important UFO cases, such as the famed "Phoenix Lights" sightings in 1997. However, for me the most impressive part of the book is that it also features detailed biographies of practically every major ufologist and skeptic/debunker in the field. At the end of each biography is a "position statement" in which the ufologist or skeptic gives his or her personal beliefs about UFO's, or what they might be. Not surprisingly, the skeptic/debunker's "position statements" are all relatively similar - they argue that UFO's don't really exist, but are simply hoaxes or misidentifications of "normal" phenomena such as stars, birds, balloons, ball lightning, etc. The "position statements" of the ufologists does vary, however, with some ufologists believing that UFOs are spacecraft from another planet, while others believe that UFOs are "energy beings" from a parallel universe, and so on. This book does have one major drawback - most of the articles and essays in the book were not written by Mr. Story, but rather by a hodgepodge of ufologists and debunkers. As a result both the quality and reliability of the essays and articles varies considerably - some are excellent while others are mediocre or skimpy at best. Also, the articles written by debunkers (such as Philip Klass's essay on "Alien Abductions") are highly critical and negative of the topic being discussed, while other articles written by ufologists are just as "pro-UFO" and "pro-alien", which can get confusing at times. Overall, though, this is still an excellent and detailed one-volume reference book that should answer almost any question about UFOs that you may have. In my opinion, only Jerome Clark's massive two-volume "UFO Encyclopedia" is superior to this book. Recommended!

3 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Ufology..........2002-07-26

A good, solid UFO reference source that will answer almost any question you have about UFO's or UFO-related phenomena (crop circles, alien abductions, etc.). Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite tools for writing Fantasy and Horror..........2004-07-06

This hidden treasure is not just a learning vessel, nor a simple encyclopedia; it is one of the best writing tools I have found to date.

While first published in 1977, it does not loose its bite nor its potency with the passing of time. Full to the brim with useful information, though there may be modernizations in some areas, it stays nonetheless accurate and informative.

This is a fully fleshed out reference tool, 321 pages of tightly packed information, extremely useful in helping to create the sources of your illnesses or spells or hexes; even creating mystery around your Deity's laws, worship practices, or punishments.

Man And The Beasts Within explores, in encyclopedia form, parts of the human body and human psyche, and what their meanings are in relationship to religion, folklore, occult, myth, mysticism, and physical complaint.

For example; Acclivity, Arms, Epigastrium, Dreams, Dying, Hair, Hand, Kissing, Lungs, Pregnancy, Saliva, Sleep, Virginity, Viscera, to Xenophrenia.
If we look up Epigastrium, we find that it is the region in the middle of the upper abdomen in front of the stomach extending from sternum to navel.

In a physical scene, a blow to this area would be damaging. In a mystical or occultism sense, this would be the site of one of the most important "plexuses" (a focal point where the subtle body meets the physical body, a generator of pneumic energy) and is also believed to be the spot where our "astral cord" lies, that tethers our astral body to our physical body.

There is a wealth of information like this on any of the given subjects, something that I have found to be invaluable when I am scheming up nasty little afflictions or demonic attacks or fantastical power sources. Simply put, this is a wonderful tool for whatever you need to dream up, and will most likely help you nail down that villainous monster or set free the source of your hero's dominance.

This is a hardcover, heavy book though, and not a good traveling tool. If you are traveling, pick up The Dictionary Of The Occult And Paranormal by J.P. Caplin. It is slim and compact and also a great reference tool for those who write horror, sci-fi, and fantasy.

Enjoy! And go pick that pen up!
