5 out of 5 stars Badly Needed Advice to the Young Experimentor.......2007-01-03

Students are taught to do expeiments in college, but these are carefully planned with the procedure and the results well tested. As the students move towards a graduate degree, they are expected to begin to do research of an original nature where neither the procedure nor the results are known in advance. This is a big step, and in general there has been little practical advice on how the student should proceed, just what is expected of him, how he is to work with his major professor, even how to know when he has found something.

This book, according to the author, is the result of a dinner with some fellow scientists where the wine flowed freely. They were lamenting about the differences in what students were being taught and the way that science was actually practiced.

The book lays out what happens to a real project. It begins with the first step of defining the problem to be studied, conducting research on what's been done on that problem, defining the experiments, controls, experimenting, confirming, peer review, using the results for predictions, and finally continuing the developmental effort into the future.

This is not a large book, but it provides a wealth of knowledge of the real world that the academic is preparing to enter. It is written in a light and entertaining style that doesn't hide the fact that the author has 'been there, done that.'

Highly Recommended!

Book Description

This illustrated textbook for biologists provides a refreshingly clear and authoritative introduction to the key ideas of sampling, experimental design, and statistical analysis. The author presents statistical concepts through common sense, non-mathematical explanations and diagrams. These are followed by the relevant formulae and illustrated by worked examples. The examples are drawn from all areas of biology, from biochemistry to ecology and from cell to animal biology. The book provides everything required in an introductory statistics course for biology undergraduates, and it is also useful for more specialized undergraduate courses in ecology, botany, and zoology.

This book covers a dry subject in a way that hasn't put me to sleep. It uses practical examples more than just formulas to explain the ideas. It also deals with common problems with experimental design quite well.

    Book Description

Ecological research and the way that ecologists use statistics continues to change rapidly. This second edition of the best-selling Design and Analysis of Ecological Experiments leads these trends with an update of this now-standard reference book, with a discussion of the latest developments in experimental ecology and statistical practice. The goal of this volume is to encourage the correct use of some of the more well known statistical techniques and to make some of the less well known but potentially very useful techniques available. Chapters from the first edition have been substantially revised and new chapters have been added. Readers are introduced to statistical techniques that may be unfamiliar to many ecologists, including power analysis, logistic regression, randomization tests and empirical Bayesian analysis. In addition, a strong foundation is laid in more established statistical techniques in ecology including exploratory data analysis, spatial statistics, path analysis and meta-analysis. Each technique is presented in the context of resolving an ecological issue. Anyone from graduate students to established research ecologists will find a great deal of new practical and useful information in this current edition.

        Book Description

Mixed modelling is one of the most promising and exciting areas of statistical analysis, enabling more powerful interpretation of data through the recognition of random effects. However, many perceive mixed modelling as an intimidating and specialized technique. This book introduces mixed modelling analysis in a simple and straightforward way, allowing the reader to apply the technique confidently in a wide range of situations.

Introduction to Mixed Modelling shows that mixed modelling is a natural extension of the more familiar statistical methods of regression analysis and analysis of variance. In doing so, it provides the ideal introduction to this important statistical technique for those engaged in the statistical analysis of data.

        This essential book:

This book provides a comprehensive introduction to mixed modelling, ideal for final year undergraduate students, postgraduate students and professional researchers alike. Readers will come from a wide range of scientific disciplines including statistics, biology, bioinformatics, medicine, agriculture, engineering, economics, and social sciences.

        Download Description

An essential textbook for any student or researcher in biology needing to design experiments, sampling programs or analyse the resulting data. The text begins with a revision of estimation and hypothesis testing methods, covering both classical and Bayesian philosophies, before advancing to the analysis of linear and generalized linear models. Topics covered include linear and logistic regression, simple and complex ANOVA models (for factorial, nested, block, split-plot and repeated measures and covariance designs), and log-linear models. Multivariate techniques, including classification and ordination, are then introduced. Special emphasis is placed on checking assumptions, exploratory data analysis and presentation of results. The main analyses are illustrated with many examples from published papers and there is an extensive reference list to both the statistical and biological literature. The book is supported by a web-site that provides all data sets, questions for each chapter and links to software.

5 out of 5 stars Designing your field studies.......2007-02-20

The book is riddled with different examples from articles of recent and past publications which have both good and bad experimental designs. The authors tried to explain the basic underlying designs of these published field studies and then they tried to give suggestions of how it would have been to be without underestimating the cost and labor done by the published authors. Most of the examples come from field community ecology, and I think this book is highly recommended for aspiring field ecologist as the numerous examples cited can guide you to design against what is superficial, unprepared field experiments. Not to limit the book, this works also even for other fields in biology such as laboratory studies. The principles being taught can be applied in both.

4 out of 5 stars Experimental Design and Data Analysis for Biologists.......2006-11-03

Well explained statistical theory and applications for the biologist.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, advanced, and often a good read.......2005-09-14

Comprehensible, comprehensive, and interesting statistical texts are as rare as the Tasmanian Tiger. This text is very comprehensive and is loaded with interesting examples and does an excellent job of presenting the scientific method. It's not always as easy to follow as I would like, but I deal with this by recommending to my students that they read the assignment after, instead of before the lecture. I cover the first 12 chapters (through covariance) in my upper division Biometry course. I'm an ecologist and have enjoyed learning much that was never covered in my undergraduate biometry and two graduate statistics courses. This would be an excellent text for graduate courses.

          Book Description

This book describes a systematic methodology for formulating mixed-ingredient products so that they perform to particular standards, providing scientists and engineers with a fast track to the implementation of the methodology. Examples from a wide variety of fields are included, as well as a discussion of how to design experiments for a mixture setting and how to fit and interpret models in a mixture setting. It also introduces process variables, the combining of mixture and nonmixture variables in a designed experiment, and the concept of collinearity and the possible problems that can result from its presence. The book is a useful manual for the formulator and can also be used by a resident statistician to teach an in-house short course. Statistical proofs are largely absent, and the formulas that are presented are included to explain how the various software packages carry out the analysis.

            Book Description

At the core of good research lies the careful design of experiments. Yet all too often a successful design comes only after a painful trial-and-error process, wasting valuable time and valuable resources. Experimental Design for the Life Sciences teaches the reader how to effectively design experiments, to ensure that today's students are equipped with the skills they need to be the researchers of tomorrow. With a refreshingly approachable and articulate style, the book explains the essential elements of experimental design in clear, practical terms, so that the reader can grasp and apply even the most challenging concepts, including power analysis and pseudoreplication. Emphasising throughout the inter-relatedness of experimental design, statistics, and ethical considerations, the book ensures that the reader really understands experimental design in the broader context of biological research, using examples drawn from a range of fields across the biosciences to show to the student how the theory is applied in active research. Above all, Experimental Design for the Life Sciences shows how good experimental design is about clear thinking and biological understanding, not mathematical or statistical complexity - putting it at the heart of any biosciences student's education. Online Resource Centre: The companion web site features: For lecturers: DT Figures from the book available to download, to facilitate lecture preparation For students and lecturers: DT Discussion forum, promoting the discussion of experimental design in real research, to stimulate active learning on the part of the student.

            Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Well constructed and potentially useful.......2005-09-15

I have the 2nd edition of this reference, obtained in 2003. Springer-Verlag and their printers have done a very nice job of making this large (1400-page) book, and they provide a very readable typeset. The text is laid out in numerous short application notes describing different pharmacological assays, and these include sections on the study's purpose, a paragraph on the procedure, another on the approach to interpreting results, a fourth cursory section discussing modifications of the method by others, and a usually generous list of references after that. A big plus, I think, is the inclusion of a CD-ROM that contains an Adobe PDF of the entire text. This is a better medium in which to do searching, especially since the hardcover's printed lookup is set up in such extensive run-in indexing, with numerous cascades of indented em-dashes on subentries that it is really kind of annoying. The Contents list, grouped by organ systems, is a lot more useful.

It's still a difficult call making a decision to recommend a text like this - if you are actively doing pharmacological research, your sources are probably more current at your bench, or in recent journals and meetings. But, the very readable structure, many references, and a useful CD-ROM, suggests Vogel's text as an appealing and well-assembled package for academic and group reference.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for pharmacological Researchers.......2000-06-30

The book is a wonderful addition to books on drug evaluation. I feel pharmacologists are getting very few books on this subject. This book can end up the search for such pharmacologists. It will surely boost the research in this field. I hope that this book should reach into hands of every pharmacologists. Whether he/she is a academician or researcher, this book will be a valuable addition to his/her personal library. Each institute conducting research or teaching in pharmacology should also have this book in the library.

Many thanks to the authors and publishers of this books.
