Book Description
This book, whose First Edition one receiver called the ecologists' bible, has been substantially revised and rewritten. Not only have the advances made in the field since the Second Edition been taken into account, but its scope has now been explicitly extended to all macroscopic animals, particular attention being paid to fish as well as other vertebrates. It provides a unique synthesis of the methods and techniques that are available for the study of populations and ecosystems. Techniques used to obtain both absolute and relative population estimates are described and approaches to the direct measurement of births, deaths, migration and the construction and interpretation of life tables reviewed.

Book Description
The present biodiversity crisis is rife with opportunities to make important conservation decisions; however, the misuse or misapplication of the methods and techniques of animal ecology can have serious consequences for the survival of species. Still, there have been relatively few critical reviews of methodology in the field. This book provides an analysis of some of the most frequently used research techniques in animal ecology, identifying their limitations and misuses, as well as possible solutions to avoid such pitfalls. In the process, contributors to this volume present new perspectives on the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data.
Research Techniques in Animal Ecology is an overarching account of central theoretical and methodological controversies in the field, rather than a handbook on the minutiae of techniques. The editors have forged comprehensive presentations of key topics in animal ecology, such as territory and home range estimates, habitation evaluation, population viability analysis, GIS mapping, and measuring the dynamics of societies. Striking a careful balance, each chapter begins by assessing the shortcomings and misapplications of the techniques in question, followed by a thorough review of the current literature, and concluding with possible solutions and suggested guidelines for more robust investigations.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource for biologists.......2007-05-13
I bought this book for a class on techniques in vertebrate ecology (graduate school course). This book gives an excellent overview of sampling techniques, marking methods, population viability analysis, population demography, predator/prey relationships, etc. Several of the chapters are rather technical - discussing in depth the calculus and/or statistical equations used for some analyses. If you plan to work in field biology, this is a great handbook and provides valuable information and will be helpful for setting up and conducting your own studies in the field.
Very useful information for ecology students.......2001-02-20
This edited volume is comprised of 11 chapters that deal with a variety of the methods used to obtain and analyze ecological data pertaining to animals. Because each chapter is written by a different author, the chapters vary in style and level of detail. The book starts with a very broad treatment of hypothesis testing and then proceeds to outline such techniques as marking vertebrates for mark-recapture studies, calculating home range size, measuring habitat selection and use, assessing vertebrate food habits and diet, measuring population sizes (a chapter I would have placed earlier in the book), detecting density dependent population change, modeling predator-prey dynamics, performing population viability analysis, measuring animal behaviors, and modeling species distributions using a Geographic Information System. The chapters on habitat selection and PVA were especially well-written. The book differs from Krebs' classic "Ecological Methodology" in that it spends far less time on statistical modeling and far more time reviewing the pros and cons of technqiues that are found in every ecologist's toolbox.
The book has a distinctly vertebrate bias, making it not as useful as one might hope for those biologists like myself who study the other 99% of Kingdom Animalia. Even so, however, some of the techniques are directly transferrable to studies on invertebrates (and plants as well).
The book is written at the level of advanced undergraduates or graduate students, but even seasoned professionals will appreciate the book when they are brushing up on familiar methods or trying to learn new ones.

Book Description
As the stream of hi-tech drugs continues to multiply and a huge number of animals are used in medical experiments, debate continues about reliable methods for biomedical research and their adequacy in protecting human health from new products and procedures. In this book, a leading Italian medical researcher concludes, after years of himself practicing animal experimentation and vivisection, that the traditional reliance on these techniques is scientifically misplaced. Now available in a completely revised and updated English edition, Dr. Croce's classic work constitutes a powerful argument. He documents with a wealth of fascinating detail precisely how the scientific anti-vivisection movement has constructed a rational case, as opposed to a sentimental or ethical argument. He highlights the increasing dangers to human health resulting from the animal experimenters' assumption that the biological systems of humans and other species are sufficiently similar for valid biomedical comparison. And for the medical researcher, he provides an introduction to the range of alternative methods, including epidemiological research, computer simulation and in vitro techniques.
Customer Reviews:
Irrefutable Proof That Vivisection Does Not And Can Not Work.......2000-02-01
Taking the much needed and long awaited leap across the philosophical quagmire, the distinguished physician and professor Pietro Croce objectively refutes -- not merely rebuts -- the archaic yet blindly accepted dictum that animal experimentation, or vivisection, has benefited humankind or has advanced medical progress and practise. Croce provides, in accessible explanations, all the factual, proven evidence necessary to expose vivisection as an outright scientific fraud, an inherently flawed and erroneous methodology, based on false premises and illogical reasoning. This book incontrovertibly demonstrates both how and why vivisection is a tragic medical and scientific failure that harms, not helps, both persons and animals alike, and debunks all claims to the contrary as so much smoke and mirrors. Proceeding a step further, Croce shows that vivisection, being bad science, has compromised rather than contributed to medical knowledge and understanding, resulting in the diametrical opposite of what proponents of animal experimentation espouse. One myth after another is dispelled, clearly and calmly, until vivisection is laid bare as the regressive failure it is and always has been. Finally, the book reveals exactly and precisely what constitutes legitimate and genuinely scientific biomedical research, study and enquiry, and how these and only these have brought about all that is of value in medicine. Charted is a detailed and rational course to pursue now and in future for the betterment of all humankind, absent from which is experimenting upon animals.

Book Description
Wildlife researchers and ecologists make widespread use of multivariate statistics in their studies. With its focus on the practical application of the techniques of multivariate statistics, this book shapes the powerful tools of statistics for the specific needs of ecologists and makes statistics more applicable to their course of study. Multivariate Statistics for Wildlife and Ecology Research gives the reader a solid conceptual understanding of the role of multivariate statistics in ecological applications and the relationships among various techniques, while avoiding detailed mathematics and underlying theory. More important, the reader will gain insight into the type of research questions best handled by each technique and the important considerations in applying each one. Whether used as a textbook for specialized courses or as a supplement to general statistics texts, the book emphasizes those techniques that students of ecology and natural resources most need to understand and employ in their research. Detailed examples use real wildlife data sets analyzed using the SAS statistical software program. The book is specifically targeted for upper-division and graduate students in wildlife biology, forestry, and ecology, and for professional wildlife scientists and natural resource managers, but it will be valuable to researchers in any of the biological sciences.
Customer Reviews:
A good introduction to multivariate statistics.......2007-01-26
This book is fairly easy to understand, even with little knowledge of multivariate statistics. The author uses specific examples relevant to ecological fields and does not focus on theory (which is a rarity in statistical manuals). It is, however, starting to get a bit outdated with some of the techniques gaining favor in the literature recently.

I am an ecology grad student and I have returned to this text again and again.

Book Description
Although the application of systems approaches in agricultural research and natural resource management is a rather new field, there is already increasing demand for implementation of these approaches. This will require a critical mass of specialists in national agricultural research systems and international agricultural research centers. While these institutions are setting themselves up for systems research, the experience that has been gained in this area needs to be evaluated, further possibilities need to be explored, and new objectives and targets need to be set.
This book contains the papers of a three-day seminar on systems approaches and modelling for agricultural development. The seminar, which was held at ISNAR and co-organized by ICASA, was attended by participants from twelve national agricultural research systems, nine international agricultural research centers, and five advanced research organizations. In 24 chapters the book assesses the state of the art of systems approaches in agricultural research, resource management, and rural planning, and gives an impression of the evolution of this interdisciplinary field and its use.
