Book Description
Authored by an acknowledged expert on muscle and movement imbalances, this well-illustrated book presents a classification system of mechanical pain syndrome that is designed to direct the exercise prescription and the correction of faulty movement patterns. The diagnostic categories, associated muscle and movement imbalances, recommendations for treatment, examination, exercise principles, specific corrective exercises, and modification of functional activities for case management are described in detail. This book is designed to give practitioners an organized and structured method of analyzing the mechanical cause of movement impairment syndrome, the contributing factors, and a strategy for management.
Customer Reviews:
Good book for Health Care professionals .......2007-07-16
This is a good resource book for use by health care professionals. Sahrmann has good ideas towards movement impairments, but organization is a little hard to follow.
must have.......2007-01-12
THIs is a must have book for all physical therapist working in an orthopedic setting.
Most clinically useful book.......2003-03-07
Very useful for the practitioner involved in ortopaedic rehab, interested in going further than treating pain! Very essential complement to any good treatment. Will help you teach your patient how to take control of their body to prevent re-occurence.
Precision movement matters!.......2002-03-29
Having harrassed the author for close to four years I am pleased to say that this text represents what might best described an a "hinge in history". I agree that the concepts and examination items might be challenging for those used to a "cookbook" strategy but I am sure Shirley will agree that she did NOT invent anatomy or kinesiology! Systematic clinical examination, identifying movement deviations from mechanical precision and optimising efficient movement patterns are not large leaps of logic. Major car manufacturers and airlines have been doing this for years; analyse patterns of wear and tear on components and see what lasts the longest! However, humans in their comfortable/familiar patterns don't invest in the valid and rational practice of prevention and damage analysis. I know UK colleagues will take the path of least resistance when trying out the exam items within this book and say "Well it doesn't predict chronicity!" or "What about psychosocial factors?". To them and the pain biology fanatics I say this...when viruses, bacteria, trauma, genetics and family relationships have been analysed, what are the three primary drivers of nociception? Bogduk delineated the mechanical deformation model of nociception; Sahrmann has now thrown down the gauntlet with the movement paradigm to support or negate. Roll up your sleeves, break a sweat and join those of us liberated from surreal Southern Hemisphere skeleton pushing. Active rehabilitation with empiricism, determinism and a healthy cynicism! This text gives content and not just theory/process models - try telling a student that clinical reasoning is a valid model when they don't know what to look for!
Long awaited text for expert practice.......2001-09-26
Physical therapists like myself have been waiting for a text from the author for over 10 years. Definitely a text for someone well versed in the anatomy and mechaincs of the musculoskeletal system. This text is written in clear categories and deals with problems in three general areas. It takes effort and analytic thinking to understand the myriad of motions listed in the text. A CD with actual demonstrations would help immensely in seeing all the factors the author is illustrating. The introduction covers very complex ideas made as simple as possible by the author. I would recommend this text for any movement specialist but I would caveat my recommendation with the warning that hard work is needed to really grasp the techniques listed in this text. This author is saying things that need to be learned by movement specialists and only can be applied by an expert.

Customer Reviews:
Alien among us.......2004-08-02
Hans Rudi Giger, a direct descendant of Hieronymus Bosch, H.P. Lovecraft and Salvador Dali, is a unique artist whose works depict cosmological visions and nightmarish dream-state revelations. As you leaf through the glorious illustrations in 'H.R. Giger's Biomechanics', you begin to realize that it takes a deviant personality to create deviant art of this caliber. The kind of paintings on display here are something nobody could conceive without total 24/7 commitment to unleashing the subconscious for all the world to see.
Nowadays of course, H. R. Giger's style (coined 'biomechanical') has become commonplace, trivialized; you can observe his influence in computer-game graphics, movies, literature, interior design, architecture... And isn't that the greatest compliment to his work, the horde of imitators living proof that Giger has tapped into something deep for which there was no adequate vocabulary before him. It probably resided there before the genus homo existed, somewhere in the spinal cord, in the first primate dreams.
What none of HRG's imitators have reached, is his unrivaled, casual mastery of the airbrush. For HRG often uses the surrealist method, whereby his paintings are not consciously planned but rather organically grown and given the freedom to invade the canvas - an inordinately challenging modus operandi considering Giger's weapon of choice. The works of the imitators betray their predesigned origin in wavering use of the airbrush, in naively copied Giger motifs. The sycophants have no mastery over the vocabulary, method, or the medium.
Presenting HRG's artworks in roughly chronological order, 'Biomechanics' charts the evolution of the biomechanical style from the first ink drawings from the 1960s to the acrylic paintings of the late 1980s. The master's 'commentary track' runs the length of the book, explaining the impetus behind major works, such as the 'N.Y. City' series and 'Erotomechanics'. You can practically feel HRG's exitement as he details the first experiments with the airbrush. The airbrush was originally a tool for photo retouching, which remained its primary use for decades, but in the hands of HRG it turned into a weapon capable of transmuting Freudian and Jungian theories on sexual perversions into photorealistic imagery.
Designs on 'Alien' and 'Poltergeist II' are examples of how effortlessly HRG crosses the boundary between 2D and 3D, painting and sculpture. They also reveal his background as a student of architecture and industrial design at the Zurich School of Applied Arts.
Well, either you 'get it' or you don't. There are people who instinctively recognize the worth in HRG's art. If you are the sort of person who requires a rational basis for purchasing 'Biomechanics', suffice it to say that the influence of these works is so widespread that failure to trace that influence back to the source reveals a profound ignorance on contemporary visual culture.
Good introduction to his more complicated works.......1997-12-29
This was the first book of his that I bought. It is very well done like all the rest. It is a good book to get your "feet wet" and to decide if you want to go any further into his work. I liked it very much, and recommend it as an introduction.

Excellent Textbook!!!.......2007-08-14
This book was used in my Exercise Phys course last year, and I must say that it is very thorough and presented in an easy-to-understand format. The text has many illustrations and graphs to show you the dynamics of each concept. I had no Exercise Physiology background prior to this class, and this book made all the difference in being successful with the new material. I have, on numerous occasion, referred back to this text for information after completing the class. I highly recommend purchasing this book at least as a reference go-to for any Exercise Science enthusiast.

Great introduction to Applied Kinesiology.......2003-04-12
Robert Frost's AK manual is lean and to the point. It gives the history of AK, how AK is used in Europe and the USA, theory into the mechanisms of the reflexes used in AK, basic therapeutic procedures with explainations, and clear diagrams of the basic muscle tests and the appropriate reflexes. A perfect complement to the 100 hour course. I recommend this book to any student or practioner in health care who is looking to expand their skill set.

Book Description
Knowledge of the mechanical properties of the skeletal system is important to understanding how our body works and how to repair it when it is damaged. This book is written primarily as a text for graduate and advanced undergraduate students taking courses on skeletal biomechanics, and it serves to integrate anatomy and physiology with structural and material behavior in a way that is highly didactic. It is rigorous in its approach to the mechanical properties of the skeleton, without requiring mathematics beyond calculus or neglecting the biological properties of skeletal tissue. Time is taken to introduce basic mechanical and biological concepts, and the approaches used for some of the engineering analyses are purposefully limited. The book is an effective bridge between engineering, veterinary, biological and medical disciplines. Each chapter finishes with sets of exercises to test the student and the book will be welcomed by students and researchers in biomechanics, orthopedics, physical anthropology, zoology, and veterinary science.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent summary of the vast literature........2000-04-10
As Y.C. Fung put it, biomechanics is a field characterized by a vagueness of definitions and abundance of literature. I was feeling hopelessly lost trying to get a handle on both the engineering aspects and biological phenomena. Martin and Burr have summarized the entire field very efficiently. It would help if you have a previous background in solid mechanics, but even that has been explained in a simple fashion. The exercises at the end are what attracted me most. They look very similar to actual problems in research and doing them sincerely is sure to enhance your understanding and appreciation of the field. A must have for the researcher/Grad.student in biomechanics/bioengineering.

Book Description
A thorough update of the classic book on human movement in biomechanics
Biomechanics and Motor Control of Human Movement, Third Edition is the thoroughly updated and retitled version of the widely used Biomechanics of Human Movement. Integrating a common set of data and analyses with reliable material on biomechanical techniques, this up-to-date edition examines techniques used to measure and analyze all body movements as mechanical systems, including such everyday movements as walking.
This highly informative and accessible Third Edition treats each limb of the body as a separate segment connected at hinge joints. Actuators replace muscles, and torque motors replace the net effect of all muscles. Descriptions of movements are given as well as examinations of the cause of the movement at kinetic and electromyographic levels.
Biomechanics and Motor Control of Human Movement, Third Edition features:
* New material on 3D kinematics and kinetics emphasizing motor control
* Expanded coverage on image measurement systems
* New information on 3D center-of-mass estimates
* Models of the kinetics of balance control
* The latest research findings on fundamental relationships
* New biophysical models of EMG detection, as well as standards for recording and reporting
Complete with basic physics principles presented in capsule form for quick reference, Biomechanics and Motor Control of Human Movement, Third Edition is an essential resource for students and researchers.
Customer Reviews:
A must have for anyone serious about biomechanics.......2006-11-23
This book is a must have for biomechanics Graduate students. It looks at biomechanics from an engineering standpoint and technological standpoint, not just a math/physics standpoint. It is much cheaper (used) and just as good as the third edition. The only meaningful thing the third edition does better is describe filters (butterworth, spline, etc.). Some other parts of this book could be better explained, but I like the shortness of it overall. It also has Demster's anthropometric data in it that is the most commonly used for inverse dynamic solutions in biomechanics. Overall a great book and I'd recommend it to any advanced biomechanics student, even over the third edition all things considered.

Book Description
The leading textbook for undergraduate exercise physiology courses, Physiology of Sport and Exercise, is back in an updated fourth edition that is better than ever after extensive external reviews of the previous edition by nine content experts. Renowned authors Jack Wilmore and David Costill add the expertise of W. Larry Kenney to bring a fresh perspective to the organization and content of the fourth edition.
Building on the positive feedback of previous editions, Physiology of Sport and Exercise, Fourth Edition, presents the complex relationship between human physiology and exercise in a format that is more comprehensive for students than other comparable texts. Ease of reading and understanding is the cornerstone for this popular text, and students will experience a depth and breadth of content balanced with unique and effective learning features:
- Online learning. The text is automatically packaged with an access code for the online student guide. With the inclusion of the access code in the text, students will be reminded to access the Web site more readily. The convenient Web site format of the student guide allows students to practice, review, and develop knowledge and skills about the physiology of sport and exercise.
- Accessible layout. The book is divided into seven parts, each with opening text that briefly describes the contents of the chapters in that part. Chapter outlines with page numbers help students locate material, including the related online study guide activities.
- Keys to comprehension. In each chapter, key points and key terms are highlighted. The key terms are listed at the end of the chapter and defined in the glossary, thus increasing students' opportunities for recall, transfer of information, and self-testing.
- Review and reflection. Review boxes scattered throughout each chapter remind students of the major points presented. Study questions allow students to test their knowledge of the chapter's contents. Reminders of available study guide activities encourage students to explore additional learning opportunities.
- Reference and extended study. A comprehensive glossary and a thorough index help students navigate both the text and subject matter. Plus, a listing of references and selected readings provide additional information about topics of special interest.
- Abbreviations and conversions. A list of common abbreviations on the inside front cover and a list of conversions on the inside back cover of the text provide a quick and easy reference for students while they complete labs and assignments.
In an effort to reduce "backpack bulge," the fourth edition has been carefully streamlined to offset the addition of new chapters or pages. Updated research, modernized artwork, and a reorganization of material provide a focused and effective presentation of concepts within a slightly smaller--and lighter--textbook. Chapters regarding nutrition and body composition are now combined to reduce information overlap, and references and selected readings from each chapter are grouped at the end of the text.
The authors, all distinguished researchers and past presidents of the American College of Sports Medicine, combine their expertise to deliver a level of technical content superior to that in previous editions with the inclusion of new and updated topics:
- New information regarding exercise training principles and the adaptations in muscle, hormonal control, neural control, metabolism, and cardiorespiratory function with both resistance training and aerobic and anaerobic training
- A more in-depth presentation of the body's adaptations in hot and cold environments and at altitude
- Updated content on how general principles of exercise and sport physiology are specifically applied to children and adolescents, older individuals, and women
- The latest research in exercise prescription for health and fitness, including the unique role of physical activity for rehabilitation and the prevention and control of cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes
To facilitate a more integrated learning experience, both students and instructors can take advantage of the online ancillaries included in the fourth edition of Physiology of Sport and Exercise. The free online student study guide offers an improved interface and new learning activities that complement each chapter in the book. Additionally, helpful study guide reminders and the inclusion of an access code within the book prompt students to access the online guide to practice, review, and develop their understanding of chapter concepts.
Students can also use the guide's dynamic and interactive learning activities to conduct experiments outside the lab. Key concepts are reinforced as students conduct self-made experiments and record their own physiological responses to exercise. In addition, the study guide offers access links to scientific and professional journals as well as organization and career information.
One convenient Web address gives instructors access to an updated instructor guide, presentation package, and test package. The "plug-and-play" presentation package includes all graphics and content photos, plus PowerPoint slides with key points, which can be modified to suit individual teaching styles and a variety of class structures. Both the test package and instructor guide include resources and teaching aids designed to decrease lecture and test preparation time and increase pedagogical effectiveness.
Physiology of Sport and Exercise, Fourth Edition, stands alone as the best, most comprehensive resource framing the latest research findings in a reader-friendly format. This winning combination makes it easier--and more engaging--than ever for students to develop their understanding of the body's marvelous abilities to perform various types and intensities of exercise and sport, to adapt to stressful situations, and to improve its physiological capacities.
Customer Reviews:
Good and interesting .......2007-06-08
The book goes a little deeper into the world of humans and sport. It touches on common themes like cell/muscle anatomy, energy systems, adaptations to training, nutrition etc. If you have read on these topics in the past, you'll find this book helpful as it reviews the basics and then probes just a little bit deeper into the subjects. One of my better school books :-)
It is a technical book with good illustrations and pictures. I would grade it as an intermediate level material. You can read this as a beginner but it would be a slow read as you'd have to get a understanding of all the concepts...It is like reading an upgraded version of college biology - first time it's a lot of studying, the second time you'll review and pic up on new little details...
Review not from an exercise physiologist........2007-01-31
I'm electrical engineer but I enjoy practicing and learning about sports and exercise physiology.
I consider reading this book better than buying thousands of sport/fitness magazines because the last one are not, in general, scientifically founded and full of wrong (market driven an potentially dangerous for your health) information. Of course, if you are not a exercise physiologist or do not have an undergraduate degree in correlated area you can have some difficult to cope with the book, but a basic knowledge in chemistry and biology can help to overcome most of them and learn the foundations.
Additionally, the book offers hundreds of references which can be helpful for further reading.
Very good reference material.......2001-06-19
This book is excellent consolidation of reference material which is sensibly divided into logical chapters.
It covers every area of sport performance in well-documented and example-driven text, colour diagrams and graphical representations. It is a generic reference book, which does not focus on specific sports activities, but uses examples from a wide range of sports to demonstrate the body's response to exercise, training and the passage of time.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a detailed overview of the physiological responses to training, or needs specific answers to questions. An excellent index and layout also makes this a good reference book for looking up quick answers to problems. Absolutely worth the cost. Only criticism... there is a slightly schizophrenic approach to units of measure, reflecting the US imperial measurements, Keep a calculator handy to convert to SI units (eg Kgs, Kms, etc)
Excellent introduction to exercise physiology.......2000-05-10
This book is well-illustrated and easy to read, but it is really a basic text, not the end-all. For example, in the section on nutrition, the authors recommend that carbohydrates should constitute 50% of an athlete's daily calories, and yet they neglect the fact that so many people in this country do not tolerate carbohydrates well. Nutrition really needs to be adjusted to the individual's metabolism and needs, and there is really no one set magic formula that will work for everyone. But, if you keep that in mind and are looking for a good introductory text, this will serve admirably.
Great Exercise Book.......1999-02-28
A good physiology exercise book is so important to understanding the body and how all of the different systems work together. This book does a great job of explaining concepts by colorful graphics and pictures. If your an advid athlete like myself you will enjoy this book. I was always chasing the new fads in exercise or trying the latest diet to trim down, they never worked. You must first understand some of the complexities of the human body. Likewise, if you want to tweak your car's engine you must first understand some of the most basic principles of a car engine before adding expensive and useless gadgets.

Book Description
With Biomechanics: Motion, Flow, Stress, and Growth, the premier bioengineering scientist Y.C. Fung concludes a discussion first introduced in his seminal work, Biomechanics: Mechanical Properties of Living Tissues, and further articulated in Biomechanics: Circulation. This third volume not only stands alone as a comprehensive survey of the broad field of biomechanics, but also complements the explorations of the first two volumes, maintaining its emphasis on methods of classical engineering as applied to biological and physiological phenomena. While consistently recognizing the importance of historical precedence and perspective, Fung presents the most contemporary literature and the latest thinking in biomechanics in thei increasingly complex interdisciplinary subject. Considered here are 1.) the mechanics of body movement; 2.) the flow external to an animal in motion, and the internal flow of blood, gas, water, and other body fluids; 3.) the stress and strain, and the strength, trauma, and tolerance limits of tissues and organs; and 4.) the growth and change in living organisms in response to biomechanical principles. A generous number of problems to be solved and a carefully selected list of references are especially useful and should help to stimulate thought and discussion among advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and others with an interest in bioengineering and medicine.

The Bible.......2007-02-10
Professor Fung is considered the father of bioengineering and founder of biomechanics.
Winner of Timoshenko and Poiseulle medals he's an Engineer that started to study physiology when his mother was diagnosed with glaucoma in 1957.
I am trained as a Medical Doctor and Molecular Biologist but being the son of a Professor of Civil Engineering made me understand the importance that structural engineering has in Medicine and Biology.
Now I am interested in nuclear matrix and lamins(as they are connected to aging phenomena) so I am training myself in Biomechanics, and I found that this book is the strating point.
I recommend this book to all Structural Engineers,Biomedical Engineers, MDs and Cellular and Molecular Biologists that want to understand this field.
A Masterpiece in Biomechanics!.......2002-12-02
What I would say is not a comprehensive review of what the great book talks, but just telling you a truth: if you have engineering and mathamatics background and wanna combine your background to do research in physiology, Fung's book is absolutely a must-buy. This book is profound, but it is actually rooted in nearly all fields of biomechanics research.
It is a conclusion for biomechanics research till 1980's; also this book is a truly great reference for all current researchers who are interested in biomedical research in point of view of a mathamatician and engineer.
Simply the Best.......2000-06-16
Fung takes a continuum mechanics approach to the principles that underly the human body. All of the ideas in the text are backed up with solid research and easy to understand equations, as well as text descriptions. Fung is also responsible for researching many of the ideas of biomechanics, and so, the text takes on a personal view not found in other books. All in all, the best book out there for introductory biomechanics, but one that you will use for the rest of your life.

Book Description
Focusing on the wealth of information emerging in the area of energy medicine, this unique resource explores mechanisms by which mind and body processes influence the body's healing and performance potential. Content draws on an extraordinary range of sources to explore theories of human energy from physiology and biophysics, to examples drawn from the realms of "spontaneous healing," cutting-edge athletic and artistic performance, the martial arts, and various contemplative and spiritual practices. Providing new insights and theoretical models, it offers ways to apply these concepts directly, practically, and clinically.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful, enlightening.......2007-04-02
So much fascinating information about the human bio electrical system, and how even the tiniest current of electricity can effect it. I couldn't stop reading it. Every chapter opened my eyes wider to the possibilities for creating health even with the amount of current contained in the impulse of a faint thought or intention.
I wish the print were a bit larger and the pages not so shiny, because it made it harder to read. Otherwise a very great book!
A little disappointing.......2005-10-19
Anyone reading the title of this book might justifiably assume it was going to deal with the type of energy manifested in Qi Gong, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), acupuncture, Quantum-Touch and many other energy therapies - subtle energy it is often called.
The author does not want to deal with this type of energy, and admits as much, though he is careful to say he does not deny its existence. His book is devoted mainly to electromagnetic phenomena, of which there are plenty, of course, but this is not the healing energy as I understand and use it.
I have to give it four stars as it is very thorough in its limited scope; otherwise I would only have given it three precisely because it does not deal with what I see as the primary healing energy, but only with what I regard as secondary phenomena.
It's an expensive book and I am sorry I bought it, it may be useful to some, but not to me.
A Mind-Boggling New Scientific Understanding.......2004-03-02
James Oschman has done it, he's presenting us with the rare gift of a breakthrough understanding of the human condition that includes a profound new theory of the mechanisms of life, one with critically important clinical implications. In prose that reads like a good adventure story he presents with great clarity, comprehensiveness, and extensive endnotes a mind-boggling story from the frontiers of biophysics. Reading merely the introduction to this immensely important book will open your mind to a radically different paradigm of human functioning, one that is laying the foundation for more fully understanding all kinds of phenomena of living processes that heretofore have remained insoluble mysteries.
He discusses the nature of scientific revolution and how once shunned and ignored ideas move into the mainstream of orthodoxy only to be replaced in turn. It is time for some of the most fundamental assumptions of medical and life sciences to be examined, time for these new ideas to be tested.
Dr. Oschman cites voluminous evidence from scientific journals demonstrating that along with the communication systems we are most familiar with, the nervous and endocrine systems, there are other communication and regulatory systems that can only be understood when we look deeper into ourselves than the realms of organs and cells and even molecules with all of their complex iterations and interactions. We must go into the quantum realm of subatomic particles if we would understand the nature of life.
Biophysicists have been doing this in their labs and specialized journals but their discoveries have had little effect outside their field. What Jim has so ably accomplished that no one else has done and which is so vitally important is to carefully scrutinize this burgeoning material with the eyes of a comprehensivist and synthesize it into a new paradigm that sheds light on so many mysteries from the everyday questions of how living organisms regulate disparate functions, generate energy, et cetera. In doing so a number of fascinating questions arise in the mind of the scientifically literate that scream for investigation. So many questions that have resisted our best minds' efforts at understanding appear now ready to be answered, and give rise to the next layer of questions.
Life functions cannot be understood so long as the investigation holds to the familiar realms. We now have the tools and with Jim's contribution the theoretical framework to carry our investigation of life and especially human life into the next domain of quantum realities. The practical results, if this work is given the resources it needs, will surely be immensely important. Questions about the extraordinary and well-documented events that sometimes occur in activities like sports, the martial arts, and various healing modalities can now be investigated rationally - and perhaps someday if we do the work these now rare and inexplicable phenomena will be harnessed and reliably produced for the well-being of us all.
The evidence for this "second" nervous system, one that functions much more rapidly, is near infinitely more complex, and magnitudes of order more sensitive than the nervous system we are so familiar with is conclusive. And this system has been right in front of our eyes and under our hands all along, we just didn't have scientific tools with sufficient sensitivity to perceive and investigate it until recently. I urge everyone interested in these vital issues to get this book and spread the word.
