Book Description

In his critically acclaimed bestseller Shadow Divers, Robert Kurson explored the depths of history, friendship, and compulsion. Now Kurson returns with another thrilling adventure–the stunning true story of one man’s heroic odyssey from blindness into sight.

Mike May spent his life crashing through. Blinded at age three, he defied expectations by breaking world records in downhill speed skiing, joining the CIA, and becoming a successful inventor, entrepreneur, and family man. He had never yearned for vision.

Then, in 1999, a chance encounter brought startling news: a revolutionary stem cell transplant surgery could restore May’s vision. It would allow him to drive, to read, to see his children’s faces. He began to contemplate an astonishing new world: Would music still sound the same? Would sex be different? Would he recognize himself in the mirror? Would his marriage survive? Would he still be Mike May?

The procedure was filled with risks, some of them deadly, others beyond May’s wildest dreams. Even if the surgery worked, history was against him. Fewer than twenty cases were known worldwide in which a person gained vision after a lifetime of blindness. Each of those people suffered desperate consequences we can scarcely imagine.

There were countless reasons for May to pass on vision. He could think of only a single reason to go forward. Whatever his decision, he knew it would change his life.

Beautifully written and thrillingly told, Crashing Through is a journey of suspense, daring, romance, and insight into the mysteries of vision and the brain. Robert Kurson gives us a fascinating account of one man’s choice to explore what it means to see–and to truly live.

4 out of 5 stars Story 5 + Writing 3 = 4.......2007-09-30

This story was so great. It's absolutely amazing what Mike May went through and his drive to be a pioneer. The writing style really left much to be desired. The dialog was cheesy and forced. The way the author referred to the main character at May was distracting and weird. I did love the technical details of vision and sight and the author did a great job explaining git in a way that made it reader friendly.

5 out of 5 stars What does it mean to "see"?.......2007-09-28

This is the true story of Mike May who becomes blind at the age of 3 in a chemical explosion. His mother never shields him from reality, and in fact she encourages him to be adventuresome and to find a way around his disability. When May is in his 40's, he is told that a rare surgical procedure might give him back his sight. With typical courage, May enters into this adventure, not anticipating some of the ramifications of his decision. He is a very rare patient, and doctors gain a lot of insight into what "seeing" is really all about by studying May. Author Kurson seems to get into the head and heart of May and his descriptions of May's experiences are vivid and compelling. Kurson includes just enough medical and research information to make the book even more interesting and informative. This book is highly recommended!

fascinating piece of research within a fascinating candid biography describing the basics of true vision

3 out of 5 stars The difference between style and content.......2007-09-09

There are few books that can claim more fascinating heroes than does Crashing Through. Blinded by a chemical explosion at age three, Mike May "crashes through" life (sometimes literally!) with breathtaking recklessness until a cutting-edge surgery restores his vision decades later. Blind, Mike lives life with more gusto and success than the majority of sighted people. He skis, invents, travels, loves, and learns with the best of them, in locales as exotic as Ghana as dangerous as a self-built radio tower, and as familiar as the laid-back university setting at UC Santa Cruz. This is a man who forcefully rejected the restrictions of blindness and became a Renaissance man to be reckoned with. So far, so good; we all love a good underdog story.

Disappointingly, however, the execution falters. The narrative is choppy and ham-handed at points, with repetitive exposition and stilted, fabricated dialogue. Kurson hero-worships Mike, and the constant emphasis on Mike's myriad risks and successes feels a little like sitting in a long church service. We should all be happy with what we have, Kurson seems to be saying. Just look at Mike. That's a valid reason to write a book, but it detracts from Mike's situation, which is what we're really interested in. Exactly what does he do to overcome all these challenges? Kurson does tell us, but buries it all among too many accolades.

The last few chapters of the book, arguably the best written, are devoted to the problems Mike has after his surgery. Kurson allows us a glimpse of the myriad tests that Mike underwent to determine the extent of the neurological deficiencies he suffers (a result of going blind at such an early age). Here, finally, there is science, a definite plot to follow, rather than just tracing out Mike's life in a strung-out series of anecdotes.

A minor quibble: Kurson insists on referring to Mike as "May" throughout the book. Every other character is referenced by a first name or a title; the discrepancy is curious as well as distracting.

On the whole, Crashing Through manages to convey the exuberance and eagerness with which Mike May tackled his life, both while blind and sighted. The story comes through, although perhaps a more skilled biographer would have produced a cleaner narrative. Probably not worth going out and buying new. With its optimistic message, simple language, and straightforward story, it's not a book to really sink your teeth into, but if you're looking for a quick mood booster, it's a good pick at your local used bookshop.

4 out of 5 stars The Flight of The Phoenix.......2007-09-05

Robert Kurson has produced another winner in this inspirational account of a 46 year old accomplished athlete and businessman who was blinded at age 3 from a chemical accident that left him nearly dead. Not to be denied a productive life, Mike May accomplished more than most people since that accident. In 1999, he was married with two sons when he chose to participate in a risky surgical procedure to restore his eye sight. What followed was a series of unexpected results that required cutting edge science to explain.

Most readers will probably be surprised at the extent to which vision is dependent on early experiences. Depth and face perceptions are developed based on trial and error. Humans can recognize minute differences in facial structures of any two people, but telling apart various animals such as sheep is a daunting task because most humans do not grow up among sheep, and therefore, lack the visual sensitivity to the subtle facial differences of sheep. This and other intriguing information about the development of vision in humans were discussed in chapter 14, where the entertainment and educational value of the book took a giant leap.

Kurson laid the foundation of May's pre and post operation life, but wrote nonchalantly of some of May's peculiar behavior: Prior to his surgery, May never read up on the 20 cases of the terminally blind patients with restored vision who became deeply depressed from realizing how ugly the visual world was, and in one case how ugly a patient's wife had turned out. Despite a perfectly functioning eye, May was unable to distinguish between his two sons, males from females and fell victim to a host of other uncommon vision abnormalities related purely to perception. Six months after the operation, he still hadn't read about these cases while his frustration and despair mounted.

As the title of the book suggests, May crashed through this physically and psychologically risky procedure hoping to experience sight, but ended up facing seemingly insurmountable odds. With the help of his able eye doctor and a neuroscientist, he set out to restore normal vision that had eluded him for decades and avoid following in the footsteps of his predecessors.

While "Crashing Through" didn't carry the punch of Kurson's previous book, "Shadow Divers", it was a story begging to be told, and Kurson did a decent job of telling it. The jacket design left a lot to be desired.

Book Description

Since the publication of the first edition in 1966, Eye and Brain has established itself worldwide as an essential introduction to the basic phenomena of visual perception. In this book, Richard L. Gregory offers clear explanations of how we see brightness, movement, color, and objects, and he explores the phenomena of visual illusions to establish principles about how perception normally works and why it sometimes fails. Although successive editions have incorporated new discoveries and ideas, Gregory completely revised and updated the book for this publication, adding more than thirty new illustrations. The phenomena of illusion continue to be a major theme in the book, in which the author makes a new attempt to provide a comprehensive classification system. There are also new sections on what babies see and how they learn to see, on motion perception, and tantalizing glimpses of the relationship between vision and consciousness and of the impact of new brain imaging techniques. In addition, the presentation of the text and illustrations has been improved by the larger format and new page design. The thousands of readers of the previous editions of Eye and Brain will find this new revised edition even more attractive and enthralling.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars GOOD TEXT BOOK.......2004-07-21

The book is very good but it is structured like a text book. Its couching is a little heavy, not flowing like the divulgation books.
I found some mistakes. For example, the author says that the electric field and the magnetic field of an electromagnetic wave are out of phase (a diagram is shown) and that is not true. Since electromagnetics is not the field of expertise of the author, this is understandable and does not devaluate the rest of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Classic work on perception, updated.......2003-09-03

This is the classic introduction to perception and psychophysics, and remains as readable and entertaining as it was 30 years ago when I read the first edition. Gregory's was one of the few books on the subject accessible to the non-specialist that tackled some of the more difficult topics, such as how the physiology and anatomy of the eye contributes to perception, as in the case of physiological optics, retinal receptive field geometry, ocular domimance and saccadic eye movements, as well as other traditional areas such as color perception, space perception, and so on. There are also very engrossing discussions of split-brain experiments and optical illusions, probably the most fun part of the book for most people, which are worth reading just for themselves. Overall this is still a great book and one that everyone should read to gain better understanding of how their own visual systems and brains work to enable us to see and perceive the many simple and complex aspects of the visual world. After reading this book you'll have much of the background to read David Marr's later book, entitled simply Vision. This important work contains discussions of more complex visual cortical brain mechanisms and of Marr's important work in that area. Marr discusses his important concept of the "primal sketch" for extracting line primitives, which relates to retinal receptive-field geometry, and then works up from there to more sophisticated spatial-frequency filtering algorithms and mechanisms--ideas that revolutionized our understanding of vision and the brain.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to the psychology of perception.......2000-05-13

Who would have thought that a book about the mechanics, physiology and psychology of seeing could be such a riveting read? This is one of the best popular science books around, and I don't even think Gregory intended it to be a layman's book--it's just so well written and interesting that it will delight lay readers as well as its intended student audience.

Gregory starts with a short chapter intended to outline some of the less-obvious issues in understanding how we see. Here, as well as throughout the book, he uses optical illusions to make points. The next chapters cover light itself, and the structure and function of the eye and brain, including accounts of how the eye evolved. The rest of the book discusses brightness, colour, and questions such as "How do we visually determine size?" and "Can machines be taught to see?"

The book is full of accounts of intriguing experiments and case-studies. Two examples of many: Gregory and a colleague, Jean Wallace, worked in 1961-1962 with a man of 52 whose sight was restored to him after a life of blindness. The account of his slow and incomplete adaptation to the world of sight, and his ultimate slide into depression and death (he had been active and capable as a blind person) is fascinating and moving. Another example: Gregory discusses various researchers who spent some time wearing vision apparatus that dramatically changed their perceptions, such as Stratton, Ewert and the Paterson's. In these cases--where for example the wearer could see their own body suspended in front of them, or see everything upside down--the details of the adaptations of perception are thought-provoking and still not completely understood.

Strongly recommended.

A great book! Changes the way you know yourself and others - examines the way each of us recieves information and processes it, and how we are effected by stress and learning situations. Gives a start to improving brain intergration, through exercies and recommended activites, depending on your individual profile.

5 out of 5 stars easy to understand.......2006-08-31

I really enjoyed this book as I had read Carla's book 'Smart Moves'. It is a very easy to read and understand book and makes it clear how children and adults learn, how their dominance patterns affect their learning, the impact of understanding of brain, foot, hand, eye and ear dominace on learning. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the brain and learning.

5 out of 5 stars A Goldmine of Kinestetic Research.......2005-09-07

This is the book that started me on a wonderful journey of exploration in the world of accelerated learning. With Dr. Hannaford's companion book, "Smart Moves" I was able to get a solid handle on this facet of learning. When I talk to groups, this is one topic that seems to hold their attention more than anything else.

5 out of 5 stars The next revolution in education and parenting.......2000-04-27

Dr. Carla Hannaford is at the forefront of mind/body/heart integration. We are fortunate to have her sharing her expertise in Smart Moves and the present book. Muscle checking, like Brain Gym exercises, are understandably difficult to master just from a book. For over 20 years, I've been sceptical about muscle checking, wondering if it was due more to subjective variations in the application of pressure. But I begin to see more validity to its use now. Knowing the dominance factors and the 32 dominance profiles is a great help to appreciating our individual differences. There are also many suggestions for integration. One needs to go beyond the simplistic right/left brain dominance theories and even the 8 or 9 multiple intelligences. Education worldwide needs such a revolution in integration through physical movements and the development of heart intelligence and all the senses.

3 out of 5 stars A Right-brainers Nightmare.......1999-01-30

I purchased this book several months ago and I have been slowly integrating into my work with special Ed children. Lots of good, solidly backed information that fits so well with Occupational Therapy in the Classroom. However, this book is not friendly towards the right-brained readers like myself. I had to read the muscle-checking section 20 times before I figured it out, and I am still a little confused. Three other OTs and two PT also struggled with her descriptions. I think this will be the downfall of this otherwise wonderful book.

I was fortunate enough to be Dr. Hubel's advisee as well as his seminar student (class size 12) my freshman year. We used Eye, Brain, and Vision as our textbook, and I must say that it is a stellar, groundbreaking book. Even at his age, Dr. Hubel has his quirks and fun sense of humor, and it shows in this book. For anybody with an interest in neurophysiology, the eye, or visual perception, this book should be a fun read. Highly recommended.

P.S. Dr. Hubel had "tea and cracker" breaks during our seminars. Fun.

5 out of 5 stars Seeing is Not Believing.......2003-08-15

This is a great book for anyone interested in how they are reading these words. How is it possible that particular cells in our body can differentiate among physical objects and send electronic flickerings to the brain that then interprets this collection of atoms into familiar objects - a computer, monitor, keyboard, words or letters?

The details are explained clearly with many good diagrams and illustrations. We get something on the history of vision, the cellular and neural interplay that has combined to produce this miracle we call sight, and the comparison of photoelectric and other artificial methods of seeing with our human one.

Another great addition to the Scientific American Library.

5 out of 5 stars Overview of vision.......2000-11-27

This reference provides an easy to read overview of vision. There is an introduction to neurons and neural pathways, followed by an introduction to the eye and its receptive fields. The visual pathway from the eyes to the primary visual cortex is then discussed. Orientation-specific simple and complex cells in the striate cortex are discussed. The architecture and modules of the visual cortex are then discussed, followed by a discussion of stereopsis, color vision and development of the visual system.

5 out of 5 stars Vision and Hubel's great book.......2000-07-23

If you want to know more about vision and curios about how we see the world, you shall read Hubel's book. Having done decades of research in vision, Hubel is one of the experts in the area. His language is simple and understandable. When you read this book, you will know more about how your brain works and how your cat sees you.

        Book Description

The right side of your brain specializes in recognizing shapes and visualizing them in space. Engineers, architects, carpenters and map readers are strong in this skill. This is brain-candy for them and a test of knowledge for collectors of antique household items and tools. Sharp, detailed photographs of collectible antiques and curiousities with descriptions of their use plus old-time household tips and remedies. If you can identify 10% of them before you have to turn the page for the answer you are doing well. Featured on The David Letterman TV show.

4 out of 5 stars A refreshingly different kind of brain teaser book.......2004-01-27

Being a life-long lover of puzzles and mind games, I've collected lots of brain teaser books over the years. The title of this book really caught my eye. After all, aren't all brain teaser books "left-brained" by definition? Not necessarily so with this book.

The format is quite simple: each page shows a house-hold invention from the 18th or 19th century, along with the real life dimensions of the object written at the bottom of the page. Your challenge is to find out what exactly the device was used for. This forces you to think about things creatively, not just in a linearly logical way. Each answer also includes some very interesting history on how the tool was put into overall practice, and other related customs for the times.

There are countless puzzle books in print, most of them dealing with the same old word problems and lateral thinking problems. But this one offers something creatively different than the rest.

1 out of 5 stars Little discernible purpose behind the selection.......2002-12-05

This volume contains a large selection of photographs of primarily Victorian artefacts. Readers are invited to discern the purpose of each oddity - hence the claim to 'right brain' strengthening. I could not discern themes, trends or any guiding cognitive theory holding the assembly together. What the reader gets is a mish-mash of images more suited to an antique store fetishist. If poring over images of Victorian apple corers. toasters and other assorted early industrial artefacts, is your hobby, then this book is right up your alley. On the other hand, if you expected this book (which I bought on the assumption that it might have something interesting to say about right brain visualisation and cognition)to be of some intellectual value, you will be sadly disappointed. Ironically it is a book largely about rubbish; the rubbish of a bygone age. Happily, this book, a testimonial to that age, I suspect will soon be numbered among its ranks.
