5 out of 5 stars The Book That Gives Hope.......2007-09-16

First let me start off with a background. I was a junior when I bought this book and I was barely pulling C to C+ in my AP Biology Class. The Class seemed standard and the teacher was great. My problem was that, as interesting as biology was, I found it hard just to memorize so many things in such a short period of time ( The textbook was 2000+ pages!)

The time to take the AP test came and I needed to review. I was starting to look for more of a 3-4 then the 5 i wanted. I bought this book in hopes of just passing the test. Well this book did that and much more. What this book has to offer is tremendously useful. After taking the test, I saw that this book went over just the things that were the MOST important topics of the exam ( about 60% of the AP biology topics take up 80-90% of the exam).

This book goes into detail on the important topics which is split up into chapters. After each chapter is a chapter review test which helped you remember each topic in a very strategic way. It sound pretty typical but they way the book is constructed helps you remember TREMENDOUS amounts of information in its relatively short review section ( roughly 3/4 of the book the last 1/4 is a Practice Test)

I was pulling a C in the class but I managed to get a 5 on the AP Biology test. Just think about what wonders it can do for you. I bought the other CliffsAP review book and that one turned out to be pretty much useless to me. I highly recomend this book if it is the only book you can afford to buy for this Class.

5 out of 5 stars Got the Job Done.......2007-09-08

My son had a great freshman biology teacher, but she knew she wouldn't get to all the topics the test might cover. She noted which ones these were for us in the table of contents, and we focussed our attention and time on those. We did work through the entire book anyway; it took from when we received it (March-ish) to the test date (June-ish.) Results: 740, plus a perfect 600 on the biology section of the state standardized tests (not directly helpful, but still perhaps listing on college apps later.)

5 out of 5 stars better than barron -- much better.......2007-08-07

Especially if you're doing a lot of self-studying, I reccommend getting more than 1 review book. Make Princeton Review one of them. It is an organized, clean, no-nonsense format, with chapter summaries and quizzes and lots of charts and diagrams for you visual learners. It'll give you all you need to know. Just as importantly, it won't give anything you don't need to know.
The other good one is Kaplan. As usual, Kaplan is good at explaining.
Barron is very minimal and the format is a little chaotic so the facts are all jumbled up in your head.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not infalliable.......2007-07-10

As a third-year college biology student, I grabbed this book from the library on summer break for a quick review of my first year bio classes. It is exactly what I was looking for. It manages to deliver, in about 250 pages, a review that is not too detailed, but not too terribly skimpy on information. The rest of the book covers test taking techniques and gives you two full-length practice tests. Good choice for anyone looking for a quick review of the subject, as well as anyone who actually does have to take the test!

In response to another review, I would like to point out a couple of mistakes I did find in the text (which managed to bump it down to 4 stars). Pp. 313-314 talk about a virus with a genome made up of DNA being replicated using "the host's RNA polymerase". Quick quiz #1 on p. 333 asks the same question in questions number 2 and 3. Pp. 314 and 317 have an inconsistency in the order of events in the lytic cycle. And there is another question (I can't locate it right now.) In the chapter on organ systems, in which the cerebrum is said to control muscle movement.

All in all a good text, with a small number of errors, but I'm sure they could have done better.

5 out of 5 stars A very thorough guide.......2007-07-05

I bought this book in hopes of using it in preparation for the SAT M Biology exam. I never got to reading the book, but I did look through it after taking my exam.

On the whole, this is a very, very thorough book. I love the Princeton Review; the writing style is absolutely amazing, diagrams are well-drawn and labeled, and there are many supplementary facts throughout the book that you won't learn in your regular AP biology class.

Another thing I love about the book is that it is so thick. You may think that's a bad thing, that it's so long, but the truth is that the Princeton Review has done an amazing job of designing the book, so that each page has many diagrams and only the information you need to know. Thus, the book itself is very easy and fun to go through, as each page is not a long page of text like a normal biology book is.

I personally feel that, if you are a good biology student, you shouldn't need to study for the exam at all. But if you need to reassure yourself, this is the only book you need to get.

      5 out of 5 stars Solid.......2007-07-21

Using this SAT 2 book and some additional practice tests I scored an 800 on the biology SAT 2. Overall, I thought the review and practice tests were quite useful, but the review might not have been enough without a very strong knowledge of biology.

      4 out of 5 stars GOOD.......2007-05-30

As indicated, the book is good but not GREAT. Practice tests are OK. The book is good for cramming but it is better to be used with another books as the book misses the details. For basics and cramming , PR is way to go. To study over a long time and get all info, get Kaplan too(PRs classification chapter is good though).

      2 out of 5 stars Misleading Focus.......2007-03-21

I used Princeton to study for SAT II Biology this past summer, going through it bit by bit over the course of the school year. As other reviewers have mentioned, the details are excellent and the book is easy to read. However, I made a mistake: I took the practice tests the day before I took the SAT IIs. I realized that Princeton's focus is on the smaller details, rather than the overall concepts and general information that the practice tests revealed the SATs were concerned with. I did well on the exam, but found myself racking my brain for details from my Biology class. There are a few specific areas, such as hormones, which the book helped with, but overall, I feel that I should have used at least on other prep book.
If for nothing else, I recommend the book for its practice tests. I think they're authentic - keeping in mind that the SAT people use some of the same questions from year to year.

4 out of 5 stars Well, it's worth the money.......2007-01-18

I haven't taken the test yet, but I've been using this book to study, along with my biology textbook, for last few weeks. I found it just a little bit confusing the way the author chose to organize it.

Other than that, the writing is very clear. So well done.

5 out of 5 stars Good reference book.......2006-11-10

My soon like it. He uses it as a reference book for his high school biology class.

5 out of 5 stars Overkill but it works.......2007-02-17

This book had some details that you really don't need to know for the Biology SAT Subject Test, and its practice tests are misleading. But if you study it, you're safe.

I took AP Bio last year (test in May) and took the SAT Subject Test in June without studying specifically for it or reviewing anything. I got a 690.

I just took it again (end of January, so I had forgotten a lot of the material from AP Bio) after studying this book and got myself a 790.

This book got me my 790...it's good.

Edit: I forgot to add this before, but the comment below that says it only has one practice test is wrong. It's got a diagnostic test at the beginning (not really a practice test but pretty long still) and two practice tests (you can choose E or M for both).

3 out of 5 stars It's OK, but... not an excellent review book........2006-11-20

It's a useful book for SAT Biology, anyway. However, it isn't concise enough and just looks like a textbook (not a review one). It covers most of the topics of the exam, but too detailed, and a bit boring.
If you haven't taken Biology courses in high school, this book will help you understand some cardinal concepts and principles. For those who have already taken Biology courses, I would recommend Princeton Review.
It is said on the front cover that it "includes 2 Biology E practice tests & 2 Biology M practice tests". But in reality, it just includes 2 practice tests altogether, with both E & M sections.
In addition, the format of the practice test is a bit different from the real one.

      4 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-12-03

I used this book for my own exam and got a 720 on it. I only found two negative aspects of this book; the poor diagrams and irrelevant information. In place of the diagrams in the Kaplan, i recommend that you use Priceton Review. I absolute hope that you don't use the Barron's book, considering all of the poeple i know who sue it said it sucked. I personally found that their font and spacing was too small and hard to read. Kaplan has larger text and large margins in the pages for you to tkae notes.

5 out of 5 stars Kaplan's Biology compared to others.......2005-10-16

I got a 760 on the test (40 points below my goal). Although I read through the princeton review book (which reads like a novel, but not), the barron's book (which DOES have irrelevant stuff), and the REA book (which has 6 practice tests, but the material it reviews doesn't seem quite standard), I used Kaplan's mainly. It takes a lot of time to review, but it covers everything in an organized way, with 5 main subjects. Another note: Use the fourth edition, the one with a green and black cover. All of the "effective through 2003" editions are printed on brighter, higher quality paper than the editions that were "improved." I find it easier to read from this paper, that is just like the paper in your copy machine.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2004-09-10

This book served to help me with the exam. Important topics liked ecology and cells are explained that is nice to learn from. I also used Cliff's Biology by Philip Pack which is also a good reference--easy reading. However, if you want great test preparation questions get the following which helped also---
The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations

      Volume 2 isbn: 1933023015
      Volume 3 isbn: 1933023023
These study guides were very thorough for going over the important topics encountered. Kaplan SAT II: is also very good for building the core knowledge in biology that one needs to know for test.

      5 out of 5 stars SOLID HELP.......2004-06-18

I used this book along with the Cliffs AP Biology review book. They worked great together. KAPLAN's book reads like a textbook but is good to read twice. Cliffs is excellent inside-out as far as information coverage. Read that for a foundation. Concentrate before you read and you will do just fine. I did- I got a 790 and just read these two books for 2 weeks. The test might have a few wierd questions but don't get afraid, SAT 2s are scored very leniently. You will do fine.

      5 out of 5 stars Good book!.......2003-08-21

I used this book (if only for 2 days!) and got a 740 in June '03. The 2 practice tests were good, although some of the other content was boring. I didn't find any errors, and thought that the practice tests were harder than the actual thing

2 out of 5 stars Raw, unrefined piece of work........2007-01-30

Seems REA does not hire part - time workers to write reviews for them.
As a national biology olympiad winner, I strongly recommend you not to buy this book because of its hazy wordings, somewhat incorrect questions, and overall mediocre quality of the test.

2 out of 5 stars full of errors.......2006-10-10

you'd think that since this is a second edition, mistakes from the first would be fixed. but no, they're still here. like a question that says gene mutations *aren't* inherited, when in fact they sometimes are. and then there are misleading questions that i get wrong not because i don't know biology, but because of unclear wording. it doesn't even have a chart so that you can convert your raw score into a 200-800 score. the only good thing is that this book contains 6 tests, more than most books.

what do you expect from a book written partly by a community college professor, an enviromental science teacher, and an assistant professor (also at a community college)?

      5 out of 5 stars great book.......2005-07-02

I consider this was a great book for me, in my case I was going to take the SAT II on Biology after a whole year without taking Biology class. This was a little scary for me, but when I picked up the Kaplan book, I was relieved, this book has a great review for the test, it covers everything in molecular and ecological biology. Even if biology is not my strong point, I could understand everything without problems and I could feel more confident the test day.

The book is excellent if you need a full review for the test, it has a lot of material, so if you don't need to review a certain material, you can just take the diagnostic test and check which chapters you can skip, and just review what you really need. Also it includes a section with tips for preparing better for the test day.

I fully recommend this book, but, if you are a good Biology student, and are looking for some light review, you might find that the book has too much material

3 out of 5 stars OK Review. Poor practice........2005-06-30

To be blunt, it's not what one would want when preparing for the SAT II Biology. Although it has a lot of review material to read through, a lot of it is garbage. The diagnostic / practice tests share that similarity.

For one, it's overly difficult. The only SAT II in which this tactic might work is the SAT II Math Level 2 (IIC). But this isn't the Math Level 2 exam. This is Biology, and the SAT II Biology cares about certain concepts and terms. Kaplan will overwhelm you with useless, obscure facts that would rarely show up on the actual exam.

I can say this because I took the SAT II Biology exam. It was a bad day for me; I found out my grandfather died of a heart attack, my uncle was diagnosed with cancer - right before the test. I still managed a decent grade of 740. Do I owe it to Kaplan? Not in the least, and not ever. I dropped Kaplan after I realized, from the Real SAT II I took (You're supposed to wait, but I tempted fate), and managed an 800. Comparing the Real SAT II, the SAT II Biology I took, and the Kaplan Tests, Kaplan proved to be quite off.

In fact, it might discourage you. My friends and I were scoring significantly lower than we normally would - biology is one of my strong points - and we couldn't help but wonder why. Despite this, it still managed to get three stars. The review was acceptable, and if you put your head to it you could gain some extra points; however, if you learn by practice the practice problems, the diagnostic, and the 2-full length practice tests will be worthless. I learn through intense practice and repetition along with reading. Some people just learn by reading; in that case, it gets the stars there - you might learn better by just reading.

Overall, no matter how you learn you will want one book to prepare for the SAT II Biology Exam: CliffsAP Biology. Even if you're not taking the AP Biology exam, it's the number one biology review for both the AP and the SAT II. With CliffsAP I managed a 5 on the AP Biology Exam in May. It's a comprehensive review necessary material. If you have the extra buck, or your library carries it, make sure to pick up the Real SAT Subject Tests and perhaps the Kaplan (to provide some sort of marker, although it might prove futile). All extra review cannot hurt, but make it a point to use CliffsAP Biology.

4 out of 5 stars Great Bio E/M Reviewer, but with minor Limitations.......2005-04-08

I used the 2003-2004 edition when I was prepping for my own Bio E/M SAT. Overall, I was pretty pleased with what I got.

This is definitely a pretty solid 'workbook', runs through all of the nuts & bolts of everything from physiology to molecular bio. I had my bio teacher helping me prep back then, and it definitely worked better.

Sometimes, this book can get a little overwhelming with all the terms and functions to understand and memorize. A key example would probably be the parts on physiology. However, it does a pretty good job of breaking the material down to a summary in the end. Sure, I did get to read through the whole book, but it would not have been possible without anyone else nearby who I could have asked about confusions that may have arisen from this book.

      I would have given this book 4.5 / 5. But considering that there's no 4.5, I'd have to settle for a 4.

3 out of 5 stars Horrible Practice tests.......2006-08-05

The practice test answers are really bad. If you did not understand the question before you WILL NOT understand it after reading the explanation. Also, the CD is useless; It contains 2 of the same tests as in the book. That being said it is an excellent book on teaching you the material. If you want only tests look someplace else. I would suggest buying a Just tests book (ie Kaplan or sparknotes)
