Customer Reviews:
great buy!.......2007-09-30
My husband bought this book and has used it so often that he quotes it at the fish store! Essential for any fishie newbie. Or someone looking to research before diving in...
Marine Fishes: .......2007-07-30
An absolute must for the marine aquarist. Prevents a LFS from taking advantage of the unsuspecting customer.
This is a MUST HAVE resource!.......2007-05-19
This book gives very useful information on marine fishes. I have found three marine fish retailers, and they all own this book. It is an excellent source for a basic knowledge of marine fish, including maximum length, origin, recommended aquarium size, foods and feeding, aquarium suitability, reef compatibility and some general information on how to care for the fish. It is my first resource for researching potential aquisitions. I highly recommend this book.
A must have.......2007-05-15
This book is perfect if you have a salt water aquarium. You can read about the fish before purchasing them. As you probably already know, saltwater fish are very expensive and by knowing more about which fish are compatible and their care level, you can determine if this is the fish for your tank. I'm sorry I didn't get it sooner.
Nice book.......2007-04-03
It's a great little reference book. The size makes it really handy to carry along with you to the stroes and such. The pictures are very clear and the descriptive areas are very informative. It's a nice addition to you collection of marine books.
Book Description
In this book, bursting with more information than any field guide could hold, the well-known author and birder Pete Dunne introduces readers to the "Cape May School," or GISS, method of identification, which focuses on a bird holistically, giving more weight to the general impression of the bird than to specific field marks. After determining the most likely possibilities by considering such factors as habitat and season, the birder uses characteristics such as size, shape, behavior, flight pattern, and vocalizations to identify a bird. The book provides an arsenal of additional hints and helpful clues to guide a birder when, even after a review of a field guide, the identification still hangs in the balance. This supplement to field guides shares the knowledge and skills that expert birders bring to identification challenges.
Customer Reviews:
Great companion guide..........2007-07-07
This is a wonderful addition to The Peterson Field Guide - greater in-depth information regarding habitat and plumage.
A good companion is hard to find.......2007-02-24
This field guide companion looks stark at first, with no pictures, but that is part of the point. With many fine field guides available, this is meant to supplement them, and in no way replace them. The necessarily brief descriptions of a field guide are nicely fleshed out in this volume, which is best suited to browsing after returning from the field, or for thumbing through when you can't get out into the field. The best addition to my stay-at-home birding library since Ehrlich, Dobkin & Wheye's "The Birder's Handbook."
Poorly Cut Book.......2007-02-23
Peter Dunnes unique comments, perspective & observations make this book interesting to read yet very informative. His approach to identification gives you additional yet simplistic help.
I did not look at the condition of the book until the return time had expired. I was disappointed that the last section of the Index was cut improperly. I could not find a contact email to complain. The book should be replaced. If you read this I hope you will arrange to replace the book.
It is Essential.......2007-01-19
This companion to my field guides has no pictures other than word pictures. It uses GISS (General Impression of Size and Shape) style of birding. Why is this important I can give a recent example. Here in New York City we had a Common Loon on the Reservoir. One birder reported a male and a female Common Loon, but was incorrect. It turned out to be the Common Loon and a Double Crested Cormorant. The difference was very obvious by using GISS but the mistaken birder was using feather birding and the bird was far away. This is a very useful guide. I would ask readers to read a sample page and decide for themselfs
Field guide to Pete Dunne's writing tone.......2006-12-16
Excellent and valuable book, no doubt. And Pete Dunne is a pretty nice guy (I've birded with him).
However...his writing *does* have this smarmy tone. Yes, he probably *does* know everything, but his writing makes you sure you understand that. Hard to pick a specific page since I don't have the book in front of me. But pick almost any page -- through Amazon's random thingie? -- and you may see what I mean. However, he does manage to slyly insult two famous, but dead, birders in the introduction! Nice. (NOT)
In addition, will someone puh-leeze tell Pete Dunne that his continued use of the word "noisome" to describe loud birds is wrong, wrong, wrong?
The word means "offensive," and generally implies malodorous or stinky. It does NOT mean loud!
My guess: No one dares edit his work for fear they'll disturb his distinctive know-it-all style. Sigh.
P.S. I found at least one factual error. In New England, at least, Yellow Warblers are generally found singing high in trees, though rarely at the top, not "close to the ground" as Dunne has it.
P.P.S. To correct a previous post, this book is not meant as a field guide but as an added resource that covers stuff field guides cannot show you.
Book Description
The study of animals - and the relationship between humans and other animals - is now one of the most fiercely debated topics in contemporary science and culture. Animals have a long history in human society, providing food, labour, sport and companionship as well as becoming objects for exhibit. More contemporary uses extend to animals as therapy and in scientific testing. As natural habitats continue to be destroyed, the rights of animals to co-exist on the planet - and their symbolic power as a connection between humans and the natural world - are ever more hotly contested. The Animals Reader brings together the key classic and contemporary writings from Philosophy, Ethics, Sociology, Cultural Studies, Anthropology, Environmental Studies, History, Law and Science. As the first book of its kind, The Animals Reader provides a framework for understanding the current state of the multidisciplinary field of animal studies. This anthology will be invaluable for students across the Humanities and Social Sciences as well as for general readers.
Book Description
The most comprehensive and assiduous chronicle of human-grizzly bear interactions ever written.
Customer Reviews:
the essential grizzly.......2007-09-08
The book treats the grizzly as the great animals they are - neither teddy bearish or monster. The book generates respect for this amazing animal.
The Nonessential Book.......2007-01-19
The Peacocks bring together some interesting stories in a way I've not seen done before, but their cockamamie, insular "logic" lies somewhere between intellectual dishonesty and sloth, which, for the critical thinker, makes the pages hard to get through. It's too bad; I'd hoped for so much more. Still, worth a skim if you love the bears and where they live.
Great Viewpoint!.......2006-11-10
This book opens your mind to the necessity of the grizzly in our ecosystem. I learned alot about the behaviour and habits of the grizzly and how to prepare yourself in their world. A must read book.
Peacock is the ticket.......2006-06-12
Doug Peacock knows more about grizzly bears than the next 10 writers combined. If you want jive-Hollywood-stories, read the other books. If you're interested in the real thing, go for Peacock. And for Edward Abbey fans, Doug's "Walking It Off" is a must read.
Refreshing.......2006-05-21
. . a breath of fresh air for those of us interested in bears and their fate. Shake off the heavy coat of mind boggling conflicting advice about how to act in bear country and read Doug Peacock's book. He tells it to you straight. "Don't travel into grizzly country reeking of bad karma or old tuna fish." This book leaves others behind with new knowledge and experiences unwritten to date. Doug and Andrea go straight to the heart of the problems and joys of having gizzlies on earth and exhibit hope that people can learn how to behave before we kill or love all the bears to death.

Customer Reviews:
Mixed bag.......2007-08-10
I'm only about half way through but I think it's okay. Maybe a bit self-satisified. My Dad from Massachsetts, much more conservative, hated it and found it unreadable. He particularly complained about the article on growing food on the commons; it was in Weston, MA - one of the richest towns in a rich state, which lost all credibility.
an essential resource for all earth dwellers.......2007-05-12
This collection of writings provides a full spectrum of academic approaches to the subject of living on earth - sustainably. It identifies the consequences of choices, those that are, ultimately, unsustainable, and those that could lead to a liveable future.
The fact that my copy was eagerly borrowed by a graduate student economist will serve as an indication of its value and relevance.
The Essential Agrarian Reader.......2005-03-16
Did not like, thought stories were full of Idealistic nonsense. Unrealistic options for the family farmer.
The agrarian ethic is essential to our survival.......2004-01-15
Editor Norman Wirzba's counsel that we cannot live well if we do not attend to the human and non-human "bonds of relationship" is of deep import in an age of mindless surfeit masquerading as self-realization.

Awesome!.......2007-09-30
This book was in excellent condition! It was shipped immediately. Overall, this was a very positive interaction.
Clear, concise, and covers most current knowledge.........2000-05-09
A short, biceps-friendly "textbook" on reproduction that covers most of the current knowledge in the field. Very well organized, and beautifully set up. Look at those colorful pictures and diagrams. I enjoy reading this book very much. But, when we were preparing for our endocrinology exam, we found something in table 3.4, p.39, on luteinizing hormone structure - it says that the beta-subunit of LH has two carobohydrate chains (instead of one?). Hopefully it's just a small typo. Well, nobody's perfect. I still give it nine out of ten.
Course Book.......2000-04-01
I am currently using this book for a college course. The book is perfect for people first learning about mammal reproduction. The book is clearly organized into subjects. I recommend this book for people who want a foundation in reproduction.

Book Description
Observing birds often raises many intriguing questions. Such as what is the incubation time for those robin eggs sitting in the nest above the porch light? What kinds of flowers attract humming birds? What are the migratory distances of various species? What are the major causes of bird deaths?
The Bird Almanac is an invaluable resource, impressive in scope and depth and complemented with tables and illustrations. This Second Edition has been reformatted for easier use and now features quick-find tabs and an index.
The first section of the book comprehensively covers the history, biology and behavior of birds. Bird physiology, biological systems and anatomy are explained in easy-to-understand terms and annotated illustrations.
Other topics include:
- Fossil history of birds
- Reproduction and mortality
- Threatened and endangered species
- Major birding festivals and competitions
- How to attract specific species to the backyard
- Extensive resources for bird-lovers including the top birding locations in America
- Birding code of ethics
The second section consists of an authoritative world checklist of bird species. The birds are organized by taxonomic order and listed by common and Latin name.
The valuable information in
The Bird Almanac fills in the gaps in knowledge of even the most seasoned birder.

Excellent Book----All That I hoped For and More.......2007-09-08
The subtitle of this book lives up to expectations---"A Guide to Essential Facts and Figures of the World's Birds".
The sections on anatomy and records are awesome. Everything I expected from this book is in here and much more.
numbers and web addresses.......2007-01-17
I was bitterly disappointed with this book. If you are not a serious number person, you will not need this book. After that, it's a list of web addresses - which you can surely find by doing a web search!

A core addition to academic library Agricultural Studies collections .......2006-11-05
The collaborative effort of plant pathology experts and academicians Gail Schuman (Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin) and Cleora D'Arcy (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), Essential Plant Pathology is a thoroughly 'student friendly' introduction to plant diseases, their diagnoses, prevention, and treatment. After an informative preface explaining why the study of plant pathology is important and how to use both this introductory textbook and its accompanying CD-Rom, the first chapter provides and explanation of how plant diseases are diagnosed, the 'plant disease triangle', how to determine the cause of a specific disease, what 'biotrophs' and necrotrophs are, disease cycles and they can be utilized. Specific chapters then go on to address plant diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, nematodes, viruses, parasitic flowering plants, abiotic factors, pathogens, how people influence plant disease epidemics, the prevention or management of plant disease epidemics, and more. Enhanced with appendices on 'Disease Classics', 'Example Diseases', and 'Rapid Assays for Pathogens', along with 'Figure Credits' and a comprehensive Index, "Essential plant Pathology" is a core addition to academic library Agricultural Studies collections and an especially appropriate acquisition for community libraries for their patrons with an interest in gardening, landscaping, and general horticulture.
