Book Description

Walker Evans' radical photography of the 1930s demonstrated that unembellished photographic fact could serve as a highly poetic language. These works expanded the potential of the art of photography and at the same time defined a lasting iconography that recognized advertising, movies, and car culture as central images of modern American identity. Walker Evans & Company focuses on Evans as a central figure in the arts of the 1920s and 30s, and includes works in photography and other mediums that influenced Evans or were influenced by him, or which resonate in a significant way with aspects of his imagery, sensibility, and style. Among the other artists whose work is featured are: Eugene Atget, Mathew Brady, Stuart Davis, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Edward Hopper, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, August Sander, Andy Warhol, and Edward Weston. Published in conjunction with the second of three cycles of millennial exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

5 out of 5 stars Photo Fine Art.......2007-05-21

Peter Galassi focuses on Evans as one of the great photographers of the twentieth century who also had a huge influence on many American photographers (and some contemporary graphic artists) and the ten visual chapters in this beautiful book provide a convincing case.

Photography as an art form has had a hard time proving it. Unlike fine art paintings, which exist as an entity, photography has mainly presented a visual record in many printed mediums (newspapers, magazines, advertising, packaging, posters) all seen by the public but not as art. Walker Evans helped to change that perception in America.

The first two chapters are interesting because Galassi features photographers who influenced Evans, especially Eugene Atget and his studies of Paris. The remaining eight each start with work by Evans then the chapter theme is carried on by other well-known photographers (and artists) who drew inspiration from the style and subject matter in his work. The hundred creative folk featured are a who's who of American photography since the 1940s.

Just over three hundred images are shown printed in an impressively fine screen (more than 250dpi) that brings out the wonderful detail in so many of them. Galassi contributes a fine introduction and each photographer get a comprehensive list of their photos in the back of the book. Overall I thought this was a fascinating survey American art photography whose origins clearly owe so much to Walker Evans.

Book Description

Roy Stuart has been at it again, traipsing around Paris from luxury apartments to the streets, capturing men and women defiantly acting out their sexual fantasies. From peek-a-boo panties to same-sex petting to more "indiscreet" activities, Stuart's titillating mises-en-scene challenge us to break loose from traditional moral codes. Featuring not only young, perky-bodied women but also females of a certain age, these images are more hardcore and more daring than anything Stuart has ever produced. Also included are a rare interview with Stuart and images from his first feature film, giving a taste of what Stuart's future offerings will bring us (he plans to devote himself solely to the moving picture after this, his final book).

Beautifully shot, unusual subject material! Shows that erotic can also be stylish. DVD with it very dull though.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best book I own!.......2006-11-09

Roy Stuart is probably one of the best photographers ever.
This book is huge and loaded with many of Roy Stuarts' beautiful women.
The women and the shots are amazing.
This also comes with a full length dvd, also loaded with some incredible video footage.

5 out of 5 stars A must for connoisseurs of fine art.......2006-08-04

Fantastic Book... Roy Stuart continues to be a master. Many do not get Roy Stuart. But his one of the finest photographers today. His subject matter is at times raw and hard hitting, what so many do not understand. But Roy always photgraphs life - real life, not the pretentious, plastic hollywod version of life. Buy this or any of Roy's books, You will not be disaapointed.

3 out of 5 stars Second Parts never were good.......2006-03-14

This album is more of the same, recycled shots from his previous two volumes. I could not avoid the impression that I was seeing what was left out during the edition of Volumes II and III.

5 out of 5 stars Photographic excellence, and a few, bold, subversive quirks.......2005-12-20

Each time I look through one of the books by Roy Stuart I am again impressed not only by his creative, original style but also by his highly tuned photographic skills. Look at the artistic skills and perfection behind the work - the lighting, posing, angles, graphics, beauty, comedy, motion, sensuality, eroticism, raw sex - it's all there in each Roy Stuart volume, and even more so in THE FOURTH BODY. Roy Stuart is a genius, and like most great artists, he's got a subversive quirky side which he's bold enough to reveal in many images, in all their artistic and sometimes depraved glory. A society is often defined by the peripheral elements it finds acceptable, and Roy Stuart is not afraid to dance on that periphery, to push the limits, to take the necessary risks that enlarge our horizons. It's inspiring. The FOURTH BODY is a must-have volume. In fact, don't miss any of his other TASCHEN books.

    Book Description

Stuart's best Leg Show magazine stories, uncut and uncensored...

In 1993, Roy Stuart began producing monthly photo stories for Leg Show magazine, working closely with then-editor Dian Hanson to tailor his work to the magazine's demanding audience—fetishists with many diverse interests including bare feet, high heels, all manner of modern and vintage lingerie, voyeurism, female dominance, and body hair. Some of these interests, like body hair and panties, dovetailed nicely with Stuart's own tastes, while others were a less comfortable fit, as Stuart was never actually a fan of the complex wardrobe beloved by Leg Show readers and provided by Hanson each month. Nevertheless, despite disagreements and outright battles, they managed to work together until August 2001, during which time Stuart produced what many consider his finest work. The five little books in this boxed set contain a selection of 34 stories created for Leg Show between 1995 and 2001. For the first time, each story is presented full length and complete, for a total of 960 pages of uncensored Roy Stuart. Consider it the ultimate gift of love, and remember that loving starts with loving oneself.

1 out of 5 stars The first book was intriguing; this one's pathetic........2000-05-26

An attempt at making his photos more "narrative" has backfired on Roy Stuart on this volume. Here, not only are the pictures much more fetishistic, they're also exploitative to the point where they start to resemble stills from a low-budget porn film. Granted, Stuart's first book contained some very explicit images, but on this second book the models all seem to pose for maximum exposure -- in unnatural stances designed to reveal the most of their organs (those "karate kicks sans panties" definitely fall in this category). The result is a cold, calculated, dirty-looking caricature of sensuality, where "animalistic" is there but "sexuality" is entirely missing. This second volume is about as sexy as looking at medical textbooks, and about as aesthetically appealing.

    5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of Erotism.......1999-12-14

The first thing I thought when watching the album was how hard it is to diference Art [Erotism] from Pornography. And if there's such a dividing line, it might be even impossible to determine, but when I finished the book, I get satisficed. I feel like the book was not just another nonsense photobook, but a true work of art. This book gathers all the pictures from the side of the line where the Erotism resides. Nice job by Rob Stuart.

    4 out of 5 stars Fascinating & Stimulating Photography.......1999-10-22

This book is packed full of erotic pictures of women. If someone is looking for pornography, this is not the book for you. This book is a collection of photographs that will give you a window into the world of fetishes. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars Roy Staurt is the GOD of fashion/fetish photography!.......1999-10-15

Taschen has published another brilliant book. Roy Staurt creates photographs that make Helmut Newton look like a rank amateur. Staurt is the male Bettina Rheims (Chambre Close), his sense of location and time is sublime. It is pure pleasure to see a fashion photographer with perfect technique disclose his deepest kinks and fantasies in such gorgeous colors. His casting is flawless, ah the luxury of NOT finding a single surgically or steroid enhanced model between the covers. Roy Stuart Vol. 2 is a must have book. Leave this beautifully printed art book out on your coffee table the next time you have a party - your life will change when almost everyone has gone home...

    Book Description

Following in the footsteps of the massively successful Volume One, the second volume of Michael Chabon Presents. . .The Amazing Adventures of the Escapist collects issues three and four of the likewise popular quarterly series. Among the stories in this volume: Critically acclaimed writer Brian Vaughan (Y: The Last Man) pens "To Reign in Hell" in a classic 1940s spirit, richly illustrated by former Swamp Thing artist Roger Petersen. Marv Wolfman writes "Heil and Fear Well," a shocking and chilling tale of nefarious post-war Nazis in the infamous 1950s EC comics horror style, brought to life by veteran cartoonist Joe Staton and indie stalwart Bob Sikoryak. Also, the mysterious powers of Luna Moth may be up for grabs - is our favorite mild-mannered librarian worthy of them? Kevin McCarthy and Dean Haspiel serve up a tribute to Jack Kirby's 1960s Marvel work in "The Trial of Judy Dark!".

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Running out of steam already.......2006-02-10

The first volume, consisting of the content of issues no. 1 and 2 of the comic book series based on the fictional comic book characters from Chabon's novel, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, was much more successful than this second installment, taken from nos. 3 and 4. Maybe the "try harder" rule about sequels applies here, too, but the quality of both art and plotting is much lower and the tongue-in-cheek fictional comics history that made the first volume such fun is almost nonexistent in this one. Give it up, guys.

5 out of 5 stars If I bought this, you never sent it to me . . ........2005-08-11

Check your database, Amazon. I didn't buy this book. I bought Vol. 1 and Chabon's Kavalier & Clay for gifts after reading the latter which was one of the best books I have EVER read. The only reason I didn't buy this book too was because I was limiting spending. I'm sure it is excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful extension of Kavalier and Clay.......2005-01-07

Having read very few comic books before picking up Chabon's first volume of the Escapist, I was completely blown out of the water by the creativity that the authors put into their comic extension of Chabon's "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay." Volume 2 picks up where Volume 1 left, with more of the wonderfully written comic book historical fiction that was peppered throughout the originial. This volume contains the third and fourth issues of the Escapist quarterly comic book, and while the book remains a brilliant addition to Kavalier and Clay, the comics stand on their own in terms of story line.
Overall a fun little book for the train or for an hour or so by yourself.
I must admit that when I recieved my copy of Volume 2 I was a little confused over the cover, as the one pictured here is not the cover that was sent to print. However as a side note, Michael Chabon himself is drawn into the cover at the bottom-right with the alias of "The Puppet-Master."

      Book Description

Stretching back over millennia and comprising a myriad of traditions, the art of painting in India is as rich, as varied, and as intriguing as any in the world. Treatments of Indian painting in Europe and the United States, however, have focused mostly on miniatures commissioned by India's emperors and maharajas and have largely ignored the many splendid types of painting prepared for India's common peoples. Now, in this groundbreaking publication, Barbara Rossi, who has traveled and researched extensively in India, presents 101 works of extraordinary beauty representing twenty-one forms of popular painting and spanning 400 years. Based on a traveling exhibition that Rossi curated,From the Ocean of Painting is the first comprehensive overview of this diverse material and is organized around the primary functions these artworks serve, from ritual traditions that lead, through the act of painting, to spiritual and material benefits; to iconic and pilgrimage traditions that supply sacred pictures for worship; to narrative traditions that provide illustrations used in storytelling performances of epics and legends. This volume enables readers to see the folk, tribal, and urban contexts in which these generally unknown forms of painting arose, and to gain a fuller understanding of the representative works, all of which are illustrated and given in-depth commentaries. Introductory essays by Stuart Cary Welch, retired curator of Islamic and Later Indian art, Harvard University Art Museums, and by the late Roy C. Craven, Jr., Professor Emeritus of Indian Art History at the University of Florida, illuminate the connections between popular and sophisticated painting in India and offer an insightful assessment if the scholarship to date on India's popular painting. But the chief pleasure here is, of course, the art itself--a wealth of remarkable pictorial images rendered in vibrantly rich palettes. Gorgeously illustrated with fifty-seven color and fifty-three black-and-white reproductions, From the Ocean of Painting brings us a world of art rarely glimpsed in the West and a stunning collection anyone interested in painting will not want to miss.

      Book Description

To examine the portraits of Elizabeth I is to witness the creation of the legend of the Virgin Queen, of Gloriana and her burgeoning empire. The history of the portraiture is that of the deliberate manufacture of an image powerful enough to hold together a people divided by both rigid hierarchy and religious belief. When Elizabeth came to the throne in 1558, her subjects had an all-too-vivid memory of military defeat and religious turmoil. Restoring stability to the kingdom involved the image of the Queen herself—over the years, she was transmuted from an elegant aristocrat into a cosmic vision. In Gloriana, Roy Strong provides a richly detailed analysis of all the major portraits.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent pictures, but limited scope.......2007-01-19

I really liked this book! I enjoy reading about and researching the Tudors (by researching, I mean reading existing research). I have a book "All the Queen's Men: Elizabeth and her Courtiers" by Neville Williams. I loved the reproductions of paintings in that book, and so tracked down "Gloriana" to see and compare as many pictures of Elizabeth as I could. I must say the pictures are great, and plentiful. The text is well written too. It describes the art and explains the purpose of and evolution of the stylised portraits of Elizabeth. It's not the book's fault, but it was missing some things I hoped to find, as follows: few pictures of those close to Elizabeth (I shouldn't probably have expected this, but I like to look for family resemblances, and the looks of her suitors!); little text description of Elizabeth (based on the author's reseach, I hoped he'd tell us whether her eyes were blue or brown, how tall she was etc. Hard to tell from the art - the colors and proportions vary); and finally, some portraits that are described in the text are not illustrated. Not many, but I wanted to see more. That being said, you can't go wrong with this book if you want to study the portraits. I am very pleased to have this as part of my little Tudor library! (My copy is paperback, I have not seen the hardback.)

      3 out of 5 stars pornish eroticism.......2005-01-01

i was looking for cool erotic photography with this book. not necessarily all clean and pristine, in fact something edgy would have been welcome but it's just nudity and sex. the quality of the pictures is fine, the colors are fine the models are fine. but it is directed at men's magazine readers rather than art audience i think. i guess that was my bad. the two reviews quoted on the book cover are not surprisingly from Penthouse and Playboy, and i think that describes the book well. both are fine magazines for the type of material that they present, but quite dull when you browse page after page.

5 out of 5 stars deep interesting book both eroticly and intelectualy.......2003-07-31

it took me some time to get my mind around this book, on one hand, top playboy style photos, the usual very posed with artaficial looks models involved in a pretty ordinery (for erotic photography scenes) and on the other hend, photos that looks almost randomly taken, photos of woman showing off their panties by accident or involved in real live scene (such as peeing in a public place and so on) it felt to me as if the level of subjects (not technicly, which is all superb by the way) and model's very uneven.

then after trying to solve this anigma for a while, i notice that this was the main strangth of the book, it give a very full and deep range of approaches regurding women's body and women's sexuality. it doesn't escape mainstream or edgy ways of looking at it.

unlike a lot of very cold fetish art, this book holds true admiration and fasination of women of all zises and ages (most of them are slim conventinaly beautiful young models, but some of them aren't) and there's a feel of true intimacy and realizm in a lot of those photo.
it's very immpressive both in it's cover and zise and it's make a somwhat less ocnventional coffee table book, i reccomand it strongly

      5 out of 5 stars Exceptional........2001-08-11

I disagree entirely with the other reviewer's comment that if you're a fan of Leg Show you'll find this boring. I get Leg Show exclusively for Roy Stuart's work and this 240 page book was anything but a letdown. Stuart is unique in what he does, challenging the viewer's notions about sexuality, gender, beauty, fantasy, and power. The women he photographs have -- like the settings he designs for them -- a sexually frazzled quality that makes one never want to look again at another Penthouse layout. If women want to know what men really fantasize about, look at Roy Stuart's photography. And, yes, many of the photos here have been seen before in Leg Show, but there are many that I've not seen.

3 out of 5 stars Same as Leg Show! Nothing New!.......2001-07-17

if you are a fan of Leg Show Magazine then this book will be pretty boring for you. most of the pictures are the same that appeared in that magazine. i had expected to see fresh photo's or even some too risky for the periodical. Instead we are treated to some of the same photographs.

overall i give it 3 stars. good if you like this sort of stuff but old hat if you have regullarly read leg show.

5 out of 5 stars EROTIC PHOTO MASTER CONTINUES TO BREAK TABOOS IN NEW VOLUME.......2001-01-18

For Roy Stuart there are no boundaries when it comes to sex and beauty. In his world everyone and every situation provides the opportunity to explore some aspect of the most erotic manifestations of sexuality.

Stuart thrusts voyeurism into a respectable spotlight. Foot fetishism and bondage are as common as the missionary position and most important, no one is a victim in Stuart's erotic universe. Women are in control, and are in his sexy "photo-stories" because they want to be.

Continuing to break down the boundaries of sexual politics with his provocative photography, Roy Stuart's most recent work is more explicit than ever. With the groundwork laid in Volumes I and II, Stuart ventures further into the ambivalent relationship between reality and illusion, using role-play to challenge conventional ideas of sexuality. More daring, more subversive, Volume III features Stuart's most focused work to date.

Roy Stuart's latest subjects include older women, who, in their non-conformity to orthodox standards of beauty, force viewers re-evaluate their personal definition of what constitutes an appropriate "sex object." Does western culture brainwash us into accepting traditional sexual roles, wherein women must be young and beautiful and men must be handsome and dominant? Forget what society has taught you about power roles, desirability, and body image. Stuart depicts a world where these barriers are abolished and women share the same sexual license as men.

4 out of 5 stars Great photos by a master.......2004-09-21

From an objective viewpoint "erotica" and pornography" are synonyms for the same thing, except that the first is associated more with art than the second. Thus this portfolio of photos highlighting female sexuality where like a film director Roy Stuart carefully arranges everything in the shot. His female models are scarcely less inhibited than pornstars but are (mostly) prettier and fortunately "au naturel." (...) The models are interested in each other and don't look at the camera. I would have given 5 stars if all the photos were like this, but there are some which (purely subjectively) (...)
