5 out of 5 stars Hard Encouragement.......2007-09-28

The message is radical, but very much in keeping with how Jesus taught us to live. As I read this I felt encouraged by the stories of how everyday people are following in the ways everlasting.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2007-09-24

This book is life changing. Read it if you deeply desire a new way of life and are tired of seeing dilution of the church and it's foundation take place.

5 out of 5 stars Irresistible.......2007-09-03

This book knocked me on my but. I don't agree with everything Shane says, but this book is an eye opener. Just when I thought I had it all together, this young man challenges the way I live my faith. The book is not for wimps.

4 out of 5 stars I thought I was the only one who thought this way.......2007-08-29

I'm glad to know that I'm not.

This book points out a lot of biblical truths that we seem to have forgotten or blatantly ignored. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone. There were some minor things that I disagreed with, and many things that I'm still mulling over. But the issues he brought up need to be thought and prayed over. Too many people don't consider them deeply enough. Even if you don't agree with some of his conclusions, if it makes you truly and deeply think about the issues, it's worth it.

It's also a very easy read. His writing style is funny and serious at the same time. I enjoyed his humor and straightforwardness very much.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome Read if you minus the Anti War Jargon.......2007-08-23

What a great book that challenges us to TRULY live like Jesus. Let's all stop talking about how Jesus lived and actually start DOING it. My husband has started a non profit organization and we are going to be movinng to live on the POOR side of town so we can be a part of their lives and hopefully offer them some help and hope. WE NEED MORE CHRISTIANS LIKE THIS who have SACRAFICIAL LOVE for the people around them. We have entirely too many rich people in this country for us to still have homeless people here. The whole redistribution thing is great, but it has to be something that is organic and not forced.

I didn't care for all the anti-war jargon in the book, but I do like the idea of peace. There were wars in the Bible and God actually commanded some of them so I find it hard to believe that God is against ALL war.

Overall, I would recommend this book for it's challenging look at how the Gospel is supposed to be "lived out". Let's stop spending millions on megachurches and start using that money to help out the needy.

Book Description

For millennia, Buddhists have enjoyed the limitless benefits of meditation. But how does it work? And why? The principles behind this ancient practice have long eluded some of the best minds in modern science. Until now.

In this groundbreaking work, world-renowned Buddhist teacher Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche invites us to join him in unlocking the secrets behind the practice of meditation. Working with neuroscientists at the Waisman Laboratory for Brain Imaging and Behavior, Yongey Mingyur provides clear insights into modern research indicating that systematic training in meditation can enhance activity in areas of the brain associated with happiness and compassion. He has also worked with physicists across the country to develop a fresh, scientifically based interpretation of the Buddhist understanding of the nature of reality.

With an infectious joy and insatiable curiosity, Yongey Mingyur weaves together the principles of Tibetan Buddhism, neuroscience, and quantum physics in a way that will forever change the way we understand the human experience. Using the basic meditation practices he provides, we can discover paths through everyday problems, transforming obstacles into opportunities to recognize the unlimited potential of our
own minds.

With a foreword by bestselling author Daniel Goleman, The Joy of Living is a stunning breakthrough, an illuminating vision of the science of Buddhism and a handbook for transforming our minds, bodies, and lives.

4 out of 5 stars Great for anyone.......2007-09-20

This book provides some of the most clearest and accessible descriptions of meditation, awareness, consciousness, the nature of the mind, and practical application I've ever read. Buddhism in general, and meditation in particular, are much misunderstood in the West, even by longtime spiritual practitioners. The author clarifies much of th common misconceptions. He writes in a clear, light-hearted and very engaging style. I recommend this book to absolutely anyone intersted in self-cultivation, whether they follow this particular path (Tibetan Buddhism) or not. Of particular interest to those who like to bridge the gap between science and spirituality. Destined to become a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, meditation made accessible..........2007-09-09

Simply the most accessible, least intimidating introduction to medidation ever written. Written with the spiritual layman clearly in mind without, however, dumbing down the recommended spiritual practices. Relentlessly upbeat and encouraging in tone. A must-read for anyone even remotely interested in practical, effective spiritual proactices regardless of readers' respective religious denominations or lack thereof. An amazing, long overdue book.

5 out of 5 stars Learn how to meditate and live in the moment.......2007-09-03

I am the sort of person who has a HARD time just sitting still and being quiet-let alone meditate! This book was the first book that made the thought of meditating actually easy and possible for someone like me to calm my mind, be present, embrace quiet time with myself and learn to live more calmly and peacefully. I absolutely adore my life but I was filling it up with busy stuff and forgetting about how powerful being alone with me and my thoughts can be to create the life I want-this book reminded me and showed me how to do this.

5 out of 5 stars Live in Joy.......2007-09-03

These pages sing with wisdom from the voice of the Happy Monk as Yongey is fondly called; his humorous compassionate vignettes will also have you smiling. He is a wonderful youthful story teller for modern day using his experience about Tibetan Buddhism, science and the human condition, woven like the humble master he his with the ability to help and heal others. This book is for the practitioner and non-practitioner alike but after reading it you must practice! He busts the myths surrounding meditation from a life of having done so with a host of stops and starts and having guided others in the process He reminds one that "The expectations you bring to meditation are often the greatest obstacles you encounter"

His description of emptiness as infinite possibilities, neuronal plasticity, a process to unlearn the habit of fear and affirmation of the biological basis for kindness are just some of the realizations herein to help us live in active hopefulness. His conviction of these and many life enhancing ways are spelled out for us in almost Hemmingway simplicity such that you too will find many jewels and joy herein.

Let me end this with an ancient prayer that Yongey shares with us:

May all sentient beings have happiness
And the cause of happiness.
May all sentient beings be free
From suffering and the causes of suffering.
May all sentient being have joy and the causes of joy.
May all sentient beings remain in great equanimity,
Free from attachment and aversion.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully clear.......2007-08-30

Mingyur Rinpoche is, among other qualities, the personification of clarity, and this book is just a further expression of that fact. If you know any cynics or rationalists who 'poo-poo' meditation then get them to read this, it might help.

5 out of 5 stars VERY INTERESTING BOOK.......2007-10-08

This book is one of the most interesting text book i have come across. It gives enough details of every well known religion. there are also photographs giveen to show you what the tevt is explaining.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer on the World's Religions.......2007-06-25

An excellent introduction to the world's primary religious and wisdom traditions: their origins, major tenets, peculiarities and similarities across the spectrum, and contemporary manifestations. Along with the companion book, An Anthology of Living Religions, this text offers a solid study in the world's religions.

3 out of 5 stars hard read.......2007-02-09

While Living Religions is a good source of information, it was incredibly difficult to read. It was like reading an encyclopedia. I did not like the authors gender bias.

4 out of 5 stars Archetypes explained........2007-01-08

Living Religions should be looked at as an attempt to describe and create an overview of current religious traditions in the world today. Thus, while it is descriptive of the practices, histories, and theologies of various faiths around the world, it attempts little psychological or sociological overview of religion as a whole. With practice dominant over theory, the title of Living Religions is clearly justified. Mary Pat Fisher has presented an overview of how religion enters the lives of people today.

The coverage is quite thorough. Introductory chapters present the primary universal ideas of religion both in general and by looking at commonalities in the various indigenous religions practiced mainly by small groups of people in often isolated parts of the world today. From there it moves roughly from India to East Asia, and then to the Near East in geographic coverage. Any religion followed by more than roughly five million people gets coverage, though the various denominational subsets necessarily are covered only in passing.

There are a few editorial aspects of Living Religions that should be mentioned. The first is that it is written as a textbook, with all that that implies. While it comes with suggested readings and bibliographies, and with study questions that haphazardly piece together the covered material, the writing also can fail to address the issues of religious passion and faith that makes tradition so compelling for so many people. In short, it can be rather languid. More to the point, it presents religious faith as an exclusively fixed and uplifting experience. Little is said about crises of faith or personal conflicts within. Followers as seen here are perpetually true and contented believers. It is the archetypes of religious belief that Living Religions presents rather than the actual living practice in most cases. The text provides many page-long case studies of religion in life, but only for the examples of people who are positively defined by such things. So here, again, we see the appropriateness of the title. Living Religions is not equivalent to Living Religious People, and what the reader gets is religion in the abstract. This is perfectly appropriate in an introductory text, though I think some level of exploration into actual practice would have been nice. What is less appropriate is that the author has at times made this perfection of faith a much more explicit editorial facet of the text. Examples of this are most clearly seen in the chapter on Islam, where Fisher mentions on far more than one occasion her opinion on the subject of religious violence and Islam. Namely, she rejects it, and in doing so shows that she is rejecting the truth of thousands of years of collective history. Fisher says, on page 480, "Whether state-sponsored or incited by militant extremists, violence finds no support in any religion." This is blatantly false, as a perusal of any number of sacred texts or newspapers will show. Under Fisher's editorial control, all paths lead to God, and so the reader here will find. Thus, one may look to Living Religions as a valid overview of the basic characteristics of the major religions in the world today. For deeper and truer insights, it's best to continue elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Living Religions w/CD (6th Edition).......2006-03-22

I found Living Religions to be very interesting and informative. Before reading this book, I knew very litte about religions other than my own. After reading this text, I discovered the beauty in each religion presented and was able to erase the stereotypes and stigmas that I once held. I recommend this book to anyone who has little understanding of world religions and would like to become educated or for someone who may just need a reminder. It is an easy read, with the exception of some of the vocabulary associated with the different religions.

In 1927, Walter Evans-Wentz published his translation of an obscure Tibetan Nyingma text and called it the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Popular Tibetan teacher Sogyal Rinpoche has transformed that ancient text, conveying a perennial philosophy that is at once religious, scientific, and practical. Through extraordinary anecdotes and stories from religious traditions East and West, Rinpoche introduces the reader to the fundamentals of Tibetan Buddhism, moving gradually to the topics of death and dying. Death turns out to be less of a crisis and more of an opportunity. Concepts such as reincarnation, karma, and bardo and practices such as meditation, tonglen, and phowa teach us how to face death constructively. As a result, life becomes much richer. Like Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, Sogyal Rinpoche opens the door to a full experience of death. It is up to the reader to walk through. --Brian Bruya

This acclaimed spiritual masterpiece is widely regarded as one of the most complete and authoritative presentations of the Tibetan Buddhist teachings ever written. A manual for life and death and a magnificent source of sacred inspiration from the heart of the Tibetan tradition, The Tibetan Book Of Living and Dying provides a lucid and inspiring introduction to the practice of meditation, to the nature of mind, to karma and rebirth, to compassionate love and care for the dying, and to the trials and rewards of the spiritual path.

5 out of 5 stars An extraordinary book........2007-10-04

"Just as if you put your finger into water, it will get wet, and if you put it into fire, it will burn, so if you invest your mind in the wisdom mind of the Buddha, it will transform into their wisdom nature."

Considered by many to be the most astute interpretation for Western culture of the Tibetan Book of the Dead and the Tibetan Book of the Living, this contemporary classic by Sogyal Rinpoche blends ancient ideas of Tibetan Buddhism with a fresh perspective from a master who has spent a good deal of time teaching and lecturing in the West.

It is most moving to read his prologue especially, in which he deals with the death of his master, for which he was present. The great spiritual process of learning to die, before dying, as the secret to life, is explored in this section. Much of what is now being reflected upon in the new spirituality of Echart Tolle and others is covered here with clarity and a certain depth not found in other western spiritual classics.

On a personal note, I revisited this book after dealing with a lost love and found it to be the pure water of the dharma that I needed in order to overcome the horrors of such a loss. I would encourage anyone to read this amazing book, but especially those who are in a place of pain, hopelessness, or suffering in this very moment. Strike while the iron is hot! The terrible, clear light of grief is in fact a step into profound self-awareness. It was an honor to read Rinpoche and to be touched by his sincerity and clear mastery of the practice.

5 out of 5 stars First most lifechanging book I've ever read.......2007-10-02

I reviewed the second most life changing book I've ever read, so I figured I should come back and review the first most life changing book I've ever read, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. After my husband died, I wanted to know what happened after you died. He was my one and only true love. When I read this book, I realized that Sogyal Rinpoche had some knowledge of what he was talking about, and this book had all the answers to the mystery of life and death for those with the wisdom to recognize it, and the determination to study and practice it. I read the book 3 times in a row right away right after I bought it.

A few years later after reading the book I joined Rigpa and took the classes they offered. After few years of practice, the cube farm way of life no longer made sense to me. So, much to the chagrin of all my relatives, I ditched my 6 figure Silicon Valley job to go work on a horse ranch by the beach!

Maybe the book should come with a warning label. Warning, this book could be hazardous to your income! Don't feel bad for me tho because I have a sweet IRA which I invest myself so I'm all set for retirement. You can feel jealous instead :-)

Actually, after some years of Buddhist practice, my clarity of mind has improved so I think if I ever had to go back to my old work, I would get all those enterprise-wide IT projects done better, faster, and everyone would have a lot more fun along the way.

5 out of 5 stars Understandable at Last.......2007-08-23

This book makes a complex Buddhist belief understandable for most. The author illustrates principals with examples from his own life. Interspersed with poetry and songs, it is an insightful study on a most important subject.

4 out of 5 stars Nice book.......2007-05-21

A well written book by an author who understands the Tibetan teachings of impermanence. This book is an easy read for the novice student of Budhism, but I wouldn't recommend picking it up as a complete beginner. The book is best suited for early students who are at the least familiar with Tibetan teachings and philosophies.

It is an excellent companion to the Tibetan Book of the dead as it will help clear up some of the things explained in that text in an easy to read and understand fashion. The author makes good use of personal stories, and conventional teachings, and helps to simplify a very demanding aspect of Buddhist study.

5 out of 5 stars the tibetan book of living and dying.......2007-05-14

I find it hard to fully express how important this book is.
The subject may seem morbid but the contra is true, like the bardol thodol it stands alone in spiritual writings.

Book Description

Why do some people age in failing health and sadness, while others grow old with vitality and joy?

In this revolutionary book, bestselling author John Robbins presents us with a bold new paradigm of aging, showing us how we can increase not only our lifespan but also our health span. Through the example of four very different cultures that have the distinction of producing some of the world’s healthiest, oldest people, Robbins reveals the secrets for living an extended and fulfilling life in which our later years become a period of wisdom, vitality, and happiness. From Abkhasia in the Caucasus south of Russia, where age is beauty, and Vilcabamba in the Andes of South America, where laughter is the greatest medicine, to Hunza in Central Asia, where dance is ageless, and finally the southern Japanese islands of Okinawa, the modern Shangri-la, where people regularly live beyond a century, Robbins examines how the unique lifestyles of these peoples can influence and improve our own.

Bringing the traditions of these ancient and vibrantly healthy cultures together with the latest breakthroughs in medical science, Robbins reveals that, remarkably, they both point in the same direction. The result is an inspirational synthesis of years of research into healthy aging in which Robbins has isolated the characteristics that will enable us to live long and–most important–joyous lives. With an emphasis on simple, wholesome, but satisfying fare, and the addition of a manageable daily exercise routine, many people can experience great improvement in the quality of their lives now and for many years to come. But perhaps more surprising is Robbins’ discovery that it is not diet and exercise alone that helps people to live well past one hundred. The quality of personal relationships is enormously important. With startling medical evidence about the effects of our interactions with others, Robbins asserts that loneliness has more impact on lifespan than such known vices as smoking. There is clearly a strong beneficial power to love and connection.

“We all have the tools to live longer lives, and to remain active, productive, and resourceful until the very end,” Robbins writes. Healthy at 100 strives to improve both the quality and the quantity of our remaining years–no matter how old or how healthy we might currently be–and to reverse the social stigma on aging. After reading this book, we will never think about age–or life–in the same way again.

“John Robbins has inspired millions of people with his eloquent, clear, compassionate, and insightful guidance on the path to health and fulfillment. Healthy at 100 may be his finest work to date. If you are interested in extending your health span as well as your life span, read this book! Healthy at 100 is a masterpiece.”
–Dean Ornish, M.D., president and director of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute, author of Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease

“This is a remarkably open and heartfelt book full of wisdom and love by an extraordinary man who has been teaching us how to live more healthy and compassionate lives for over twenty years now. John Robbins has created a new vision of aging for American society.”
–John Mackey, CEO, Whole Foods

“John Robbins is one of the most important voices in America today. He cuts through nonsense like no one else does. He gives hope like no one else does. His words are lifelines for both the body and soul. This book can literally save our lives.”
–Marianne Williamson, author of A Return to Love and A Woman’s Worth

5 out of 5 stars Health at 100.......2007-09-20

John Robbin's book Health at 100 is one of the finest books I've read on living a healthy, vibrant life. Based on his own life experience and more particulary on the extensive research around the longest lived and healthiest, happiest people on the planet it is a must read for any person, at any age and stage of life, seeking sound, commensense input on living a healthy life. Very well written and engaging I was truely reinspired the whole book through. I have purchases copies for family and friends.

John's watershed book "Diet For A New America" was the catalyst, 20 years ago, for me becoming a Vegan Vegetarian. This is every bit as profound and compelling. John A Wood, Darlington, Western Australia

4 out of 5 stars Good nutrition advice.......2007-09-19

The first part of the book dealing with nutrition and exercise is unobjectionable, if a bit repetitive and rambling at times. Many people in the West could adopt a much more healthy lifestyle without too much trouble. But the part of the book dealing with love and happiness is straight out of the 1960's. Simply put, in the societies Robbins studied, where people live in isolated mountain and valley enclaves, people probably had little choice but to eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Furthermore, in their isolation they were able to live in relatively peaceful and simple societies, where love and fellowship were common. But the rest of the world does not, can not, and will not operate this way. The second half of the book contains simply too much politically leftist, feel-good gobbledygook. Good book on diet and exercise but four stars overall.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating - Important - Hopeful.......2007-09-09

I listened to this book on CD in my car. I don't know if I could have gotten through reading it but listening to it is just FASCINATING. The information in this book is both sobering and hopeful. It has changed how I view aging for myself and all Americans. As John Robbins tells us, we are living longer but suffering longer too. The information he reports from his massive study is how we can ensure vitality, energy and love soooooooooooo much longer into our elder years than we experience as a nation now. This book has changed my life and I've already handed the CDs over to someone I care for. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Scientific Proof for Vegetarian Lifestyle.......2007-08-30

John Robbins has done it again. "Healthy at 100" presents studies of the world's longest-lived peoples, finding that -- despite their wide geographical separation -- they share certain lifestyle traits in common: They all have a largely vegetarian diet; they all live lightly on the land, in harmony with their environment; they all live physically active lives, even into their 100's; they all value and revere their elders; and they all have strong spiritual traditions. Oh, and they are happy. They have simple, low-stress lives. They have little sickness -- certainly none of the chronic illnesses -- like arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer -- that we in the West succumb to by the thousands, and take for granted as a part of aging. And they don't war with their neighbors. Surely we could all learn powerful lessons from this book. I wish everyone would read John Robbins' books. We would have healthier, happier, more peaceful lives; and we would live longer in the bargain!

5 out of 5 stars Common sense wisdom, traditional diets, friendships, sun, fresh air, meditation and daily exercise .. a must read .. excellent.......2007-08-27

This book was recommended to me by Physicians from California as well as New England as one of the best guides for any cancer patient to take positive steps to regain her health and well being... It is a simple read, filled with wonderful factual information, scientific findings, and easy steps to take every day to improve your health through the foods you choose and those you eliminate, meditation, exercise, yoga, QiQong or Tai Chi, relationships, etc. John Robbins describes the communities of longest lived peoples who enjoy a quality lifestyle free from disease. In 1994 I visited Vilcabamba, Ecuador near the Peruvian border with my daughter, not knowing its significance during the visit I was amazed to see such healthy men and women in their 80's, 90's and 100's ..I watched an 84 year old woman climb up the hillside of an Andean mountain carrying wood on her back for a nearby Inn. She was not winded, had beautiful long black hair, no gray, all her own teeth and no glasses.. After deliverying her bundle, she had a bit to drink and sprang into a dance with some of the local musicians, then went back the way she came.. something she did twice a day.. Wherever we were in this community we heard people singing while they worked, while they walked, and while they cooked...People treated each other with great respect and consideration, smiles were everywhere as we saw wonderful relationships within their community...Just the way John Robbins described in his book.. I highly recommend these books to anyone who has a severe illness; who is interested in understanding how to improve their health or that of their children .. especially anyone whose children have allergies...

This book is a winner...it helps you respect your body, its ability to regenerate and gives one pause on how you envision your own life's journey

The China Study was also recommended to read next by the same physicians..

Book Description

This spiritual classic began as a simple request from one friend to another. Fred Bratman, a secular journalist and writer, asked friend and renowned author Henri Nouwen to write a book explaining the spiritual life in terms that he and his friends could understand, avoiding theology and technical language.

4 out of 5 stars Dated but still superb spiritual writing.......2007-10-07

I first read this book more than 10 years ago. I loved it then. It really touched me. I recently led a book group discussing this book. Some in the group found it to really touch them deeply giving them the balm they needed; others felt that it was a bit dated. They felt that this was written for a different time.

The book's initial purpose, a apology for faith, never really was met, but for the Christian seeking a deeper insight into faith this book is great.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read for those who want to go deeper .......2007-06-27

This is a well written book on our relationship with each other and the beloved. I highly recommend it for those who are ready to be intimate with God

Our Bible Study is using this book as their current study. Nouwen speaks to the heart.

5 out of 5 stars An Uplifting Read.......2007-05-22

In "Life of the Beloved: Spiritual Living in a Secular World" Nouwen attempts to answer the request of a secular friend : "Say something about the Spirit that my secular friends and I can hear." Through many long conversations about the book, the relationship between Nouwen and his friend deepens considerably. But, in the end Nouwen realized that he had failed to succesfully meet the need of his friend.

I read the book, on the recommendation of a counselor at a time of my own searching for deeper understanding of my own spiritual journey as a Christian. What I found most uplifting and assuring was Nowen's central thesis: each of us is the beloved of God.

My heart responded with "Yes" when I read Nouwens words to his friend: "All I want to say to you is, 'You are the Beloved,' and all I hope is that you can hear these words as spoken to you with all the tenderness and force that love can hold. My only desire is to make these words reverberate in every corner of your being-'You are the Beloved.'"

I believe that each of us is on a journey with God, however we name that being. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is wondering about his or her relationship with God.

5 out of 5 stars Becoming who we are: beloved.......2007-05-17

This is my third time reading "Life of the Beloved." Every time, I come away encouraged and cheered. In the midst of busyness, needing to be productive, and striving to remain competitive it is refreshing to be told, "You are loved and chosen; it's OK not to be perfect; what you have to offer others will have an impact. So go for it!" Truly good news of which I need to be reminded frequently!

If you have always assumed that Christianity and Buddhism are as far apart philosophically as their respective founders were geographically, you may be in for a bit of a surprise. In this national bestseller, Zen monk and social activist Thich Nhat Hanh draws parallels between these two traditions that have them walking, hand in hand, down the same path to salvation. In Christianity, he finds mindfulness in the Holy Spirit as an agent of healing. In Buddhism, he finds unqualified love in the form of compassion for all living things. And in both he finds an emphasis on living practice and community spirit.

The thread that binds the book is the same theme that draws many Christians toward Buddhism: mindfulness. Through anecdotes, scripture references, and teachings from both traditions, Nhat Hanh points out that mindfulness is an integral part of all religious practice and teaches us how to cultivate it in our own lives. Nhat Hanh has no desire to downplay the venerable theological and ritual teachings that distinguish Buddhism and Christianity, but he does cause one to consider that beyond the letter of doctrine lies a unity of truth.

Book Description

Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley reads Nobel Peace Prize nominee Thich Nhat Hanh's inspiring masterpiece.

"When you are a truly happy Christian, you are also a Buddhist. And vice versa."
-- Thich Nhat Hanh

Buddha and Christ, perhaps the two most pivotal figures in the history of humankind, each left behind a legacy of teachings and practices that have shaped the lives of billions of people over the course of two millenia. If they were to meet on the road today, what would each think of the other's spiritual views and practices?

The bestselling author of Peace is Every Step, and one of the most beloved Buddhist teachers in the West, Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh has been part of a decades-long dialogue between the two greatest living contemplative traditions, and brings to Christianity an appreciation of its beauty that could be conveyed only by an outsider. In a lucid, meditative prose, he explores the crossroads of compassion and holiness at which the two traditions meet, and reawakens our understanding of both. "On the altar in my hermitage," he says, "are images of Buddha and Jesus, and I touch both of them as my spiritual ancestors."

5 out of 5 stars Very compelling!.......2007-04-25

Thich Nhat Hanh writes an interesting and compelling comparitive analysis between Christ and the Buddah. While interjecting his own opinions regarding both faiths (which naturally skews toward his own professed beliefs), Hanh draws upon many the Sutras of the Buddah and the parables of Christ. He shows many similarities between Christ's teachings and those of the Buddah, focusing primarily on those things peaceful.

Hanh, a Vietnamese born and ordained Buddhist monk, allows for followers of these two world-wide religions the ability to live in harmony with all sentient beings, as well as with the mother Earth herself.

The author also takes time to explore the Holy Trinity, offering his own understanding into a very complex Christian belief, then draws upon that understanding to show similarities between the religions.

It is very important for Christians to know that Hanh goes to great lengths to tell the reader to stick with his/her own religion; he does not attempt to sway anyone to his personal belief system. He simply seeks harmony and peace in an ever more violent world.

Well worth the money, and the read is very short.

4 out of 5 stars Living Buddha, Living Christ.......2007-01-10

As a person of both traditions, this is the book I usually recommend to friends who would like to have a quick comparison between the two world religions. Although "orthodox" Christians may find problems theologically with some of Thay's (what the author is called in Vietnamese-meaning "teacher")sayings. Overrall though, I think it contributes greatly to mutual understandings and thus foster peace.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the read.......2006-10-06

Let me start this by saying that when I first read this book, I had just started delving into the subject of "other religions". So, if you are in that position, wanting to see what other belief systems have to say, READ THIS BOOK. He discusses how Christianity and Buddhism are related in their beliefs. Truth is truth no matter who says it. Being able to see how Christian truth is similar to, or the same as, Buddhist truth was very enlightening. Before reading this, Buddhism was a foreign object to me. After reading this, Buddhism was still foreign but it made me want to read more about Buddhism to become more familiar with it.

5 out of 5 stars Question of Faith.......2006-06-19

Thich Nhat Hanh brings together the Buddha and Christ showing the difference and simularity of both ways of living. Christians should not fear the eastern philosophy and the reverse is also true. You can incorporate both into your daily existance as there are no real clashes between the two. Buddha is just an enlightened person, not a son of god. Jesus will always be the teacher of the christian faith and the son of god. Thich Nhat Hanh points out the fact that the Buddah is not a god. People follow a way of attaing peace with Buddha and also follow a way to attain salvation throught Christ. There is room in the world for both teachings to coexsist together not one trampling over the other. I find his books relaxing, and easy to read and understand. In practice of Mindfulness you receive instruction on quieting your mind making full awareness possible to receive teachings from Christ in the present moment and a new understanding. I enjoyed this book and its meaning to me about the misconceptions most Christions have about other ways to explore life.

5 out of 5 stars Multiple roots via Living Buddha, Living Christ.......2006-03-12

Am drawn to this book from an Q&A proceeding involving the author and the extract of the proceedings which you may find of value too:

"I would like to tell you a story. Thirty five years ago I had a student who fell in love with a young man who was Catholic, and the family of that young man required that the young lady abandon the practice of Buddhism in order to be baptized as a Catholic. That was the basic condition for the marriage, and she suffered very much. Her family was also opposed to that. She cried and cried, and one day she came to me. I said that Buddhism is not there to make you unhappy. Buddhism is not an obstacle, so I think in the name of the Buddha I can tell you that you can become a Catholic and marry him, but I would like to make a recommendation. You have received The Five Mindfulness Trainings; you should continue to look on them as the guidelines of your life. You don't have to be called a Buddhist; you only have to be a true Buddhist within yourself. Live accordingly and practice the Five Mindfulness Trainings, and that would make me happy enough. She was so joyful that she was allowed to marry the person she loved. But she did not sleep during that night, and the next morning she came very early, and she said, "Thay, a tradition that is so embracing, so tolerant, so open, if I abandon it and turn my back to it, I am not a person of value. A tradition that is so strict, that has no tolerance, that is not able to understand, how could I formally identify myself with it?" So she just refused to get married to that person. I thought that I would help her get married to that young man, but I caused the opposite to happen. Today, thirty five years later, she is here somewhere in this Sangha.

When I was in Korea a few years ago, I participated in the first dialogue between Buddhists and Christians, and I said that many young people have suffered due to being caught in that kind of situation. So I proposed that we should be able to allow Buddhists and Christians to marry each other, with the condition that the young man would learn and also practice the tradition of the young woman, and the young woman would also learn and practice the tradition of the young man. Instead of having one root, you have two roots. Why not? If you love mangoes, you are free to continue to eat mangoes, but no one forbids you to eat pineapples or oranges. Your favorite fruit is the mango, yes, but you don't betray your mango when you eat pineapple. I think it's too narrow-minded, even stupid, to enjoy only mango, when there are so many different fruits around in the world. Spiritual traditions are like spiritual fruits, and you have the right to enjoy them. It is possible to enjoy two traditions, to take the best of two traditions and live with that. If you like to eat Italian food, you can still enjoy French and Chinese cooking. You cannot say, "I have to be faithful to my Italian cooking", that's too funny."

Book Description

In The Missional Leader, consultants Alan Roxburgh and Fred Romanuk give church and denominational leaders, pastors, and clergy a clear model for leading the change necessary to create and foster a missional church focused outward to spread the message of the Gospel into the surrounding community. The Missional Leader emphasizes principles rather than institutional forms, shows readers how to move away from “church as usual,” and demonstrates what capacities, environments, and mindsets are required to lead a missional church.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Parts very good.......2007-05-13

I'll be usng this book for a class that I am teaching. It covers the basics of "missional church" all right, but the strength of the book is chapters 3-5, where a change strategy for adopting missional church paradigm is lifted up. The last chapters, on leadership, I found less helpful in part because it is grounded not to the experience of a church becoming "missional" but to the author's evaluation instrument. The authors acknowledge but underestimate the membership loss that comes from adopting the missional paradigm: they estimate 10 to 15%, without systemmatic research I have found closer to 50% loss in several cases in the UCC.

5 out of 5 stars the real deal.......2006-11-02

Alan Roxburgh has finally pulled together all the pieces that he has been writing about and teaching for a number of years. Some of this stuff he taught in a course I took with him 14 years ago at McMaster. He highlights the character required, the skills required, and the processes required, of pastors seeking to innovate toward the missionally-engaged congregation. There are far too many people using the term "missional" to signify whatever they want. Alan and the others in the Gospel and Culture Network are giving us principles, practice and definitions that do justice to what Newbigin meant when he started some of us using the term long before it became vogue.

Book Description

For the new college graduate who's not quite ready to join the ranks of the entry-level, here's a guide to help them "think outside the cubicle" as it presents a wide range of job and travel opportunities for the free-spirited twentysomething who yearns to create a long- or short-term adventure. By highlighting job opportunities appropriate for young people because of the time, energy, and commitment (or lack thereof) involved, this is specifically targeted to the post-college crowd. In fact, this practical, inspirational guide written in a light, edgy tone is a What Color is Your Parachute? for the new generation-definitely not your father's career guide. Offering nuts-and-bolts guidance, Delaying the Real World presents hundreds of options for traveling the world, along with helpful direction and information on websites, scholarships, and specific action steps for making one's dreams a reality-and in the process, maybe even making the world a better place. There's sound advice on pursuing unique opportunities around the world, and encouragement for college grads to temporarily step out of the traditional career path and create enriching, valuable, even life-changing experiences. These experiences might include teaching English in Thailand, working on a sheep farm in New Zealand, becoming a river raft guide in Colorado, or creating a service project in New Guinea.

5 out of 5 stars catalyst.......2007-09-25

This book serves as a catalyst for big ideas. Not everything is about "delaying the real world," much of the book revolves around readers identifying their own talents and putting them into action. It jump started my own thinking on how to make the best out of my twenties and beyond.

5 out of 5 stars An Inspiring, Varied and Specific Guide........2007-09-16

I picked this up while on a sleepy Canadian vacation with my family, and it really got my mind racing and open to new posssibilities.

Delaying the Real World is really quite motivating and helpful. It does not carry the typical, overused "you can do anything you set your mind to, gentle reader" dogma. The direct approach presented here is realistic, and, more important to aspiring globetrotters and thrillseekers, DOABLE. For every association mentioned there is a website. Every program has the coordinator's information, and every agency has a manager's email address included. Truly informative and an eye-opening guide to making the most of life.

While some would argue that it makes sense to stay on a steady and continuous career path in your hometown, I beg to differ. There is a lot to be said for life experience and an expanded view of the world. Some aspects of living can not be gleaned from a haughty magazine, from sitting in a prestigious university lecture hall, or from a 5x5 cubicle in corporate America, but only from traveling.

I would highly recommend this guide to anyone considering adding "weighty, credible experiences" to their life, especially if moving or traveling abroad short- or long-term. Even if one of the presented programs does not fit exactly, it certainly opens one's eyes to possibilities beyond what most of the young adult population is choosing to do with their youthful existence.

Overall, I found the author's tone somewhat over-peppy, like the one girl in the front row of a 10th grade English class always trilling on about the candy sale to support the football team. Also, she sometimes sounds like she is belittling her vocabulary so as to pander to a "young, hip, with-it" audience. Tone notwithstanding, every suggestion for adventure included practical measures to take beforehand.

I am so happy with my copy of Delaying the Real World, and would definitely advise buying it so my dozens of highlighted pages and margin notes will be within easy reach!!!

5 out of 5 stars Just what I was expecting.......2007-08-17

This book offers a lot of advise and ideas regarding the gap year between college and work or grad school. It not only provides info on things to do internationally, but provides options for people that would like to stay local. I loved this book and shared it with many of my friends.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2007-06-03

This book was just what I needed during my job search my senior year of college. It helped me keep my goals of traveling in focus and gave me plenty of ideas of how to make it work and testimonials of other young 20-somethings who have done the same thing. I loaned it out to a few of my friends who were also inspired to put of a corporate job to be river guides, climb the patagonias, teach english abroad, and work for music festivals nation-wide! I would suggest this to anyone feeling pressured to go into a corporate job right after school who is seeking something more than a cubicle...it can wait.

2 out of 5 stars Not so great.......2006-10-04

While the author does share some good resources and helpful hints, there was nothing eye-opening about this book. Basically it's just some advice from young people who share their stories and tidbits on venturing out on your own.

It gives many motivational first hand account "stories" told by various twenty-something year olds of experiences they've had abroad or in a new city.

Based on their "voices", positions they are in,(desirable internships, research grants, etc.) most of them seem to come from priviledged backgrounds as does the author, (it seemed she didn't venture too far from home for the interviews!) so this advice is slightly biased.

The tone of the book is cheerleader like designed to rally the confidence of the reader and while, yes, it is positive and possibly encouraging I found it to be a bit on the overly optimistic side as well as slightly pretentious.
