Wynn Kapit graduated in 1955 from the University of Miami, Florida with honors in Business Administration and Law. He then attended Art Center School in Los Angeles and worked in New York as a graphic designer and advertising art director from 1960-66. He moved to California to pursue a painting career and was given a one-man show at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco in 1968. He then attended the University of California at Berkeley and received a Masters in Painting and worked as a portraitist and teacher of figure drawing.
While taking a class in human anatomy at San Francisco City College, he discovered a way to effectively learn the subject by coloring in drawings, diagrams and names. The teacher of the course, Lawrence Elson, Ph.D. agreed to help him produce a coloring book. Elson wrote and Kapit designed and illustrated
The Anatomy Coloring Book, which was published in 1977 and has been a widely-translated bestseller ever since.
The Physiology Coloring Book was published in 1987, with the assistance of two professors from Berkeley: Robert Macey and Esmail Meisami.
The Geography Coloring Book was published in 1991; Kapit drew the maps and wrote the text.
The Anatomy Coloring Book was published in a second edition in 1993, and second editions of Geography and Physiology Coloring Books will be published in 1997.
Lawrence M. Elson received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley in Zoology (Pre-Med), and completed his graduate and Ph.D. work in Human Anatomy also at the University of California, Berkeley. Elson has served as an instructor in human anatomy at the City College of San Francisco, an assistant professor of anatomy at Baylor College of Medicine, and as a lecturer at numerous additional universities and professional organizations.
Elson is the founder and president of Coloring Concepts, Inc. (CCI), producer and packager of college level, educational, scientific directed-coloring texts. He is the author/co-author of
the Anatomy Coloring Book, Human Brain Coloring Book, Zoology Coloring Book, and
Microbiology Coloring Book.
Presently, he is principally functioning as a clinical and forensic anatomist retained as a consultant to governments, provinces, insurance and other corporations, and law firms on causation of injury issues in cases in or anticipated to be involved in litigation.
Future plans include expanding CCI by developing new titles in the physical sciences and other education-related disciplines.

Anatomy Coloring Book.......2007-09-17
This was a required book for my sons 11th grade anatomy class. This is most helpful to learn not only the bodyparts, but also the function and spelling of the terms. Highly recommended!!!!!!

This was a big help while I was in teacher training for Pilates. We have to know anatomy so this was a huge help, because anatomy books are very boring. This one was kind of fun.

Physiology Coloring Book.......2007-09-26
Used copy,i will not purchase another used copy coloring book. The book is in good condition but it would have been better new and not to have pages colored by someone else.
CANNOT BE USED WITH FELT PENS (AS SHOWN ON COVER).......2007-09-21
I have the Anatomy coloring book and absolutely love the series. I use felt pens (the type of pen shown on the cover of both books) and they work perfectly in the anatomy book because *the back of every page is blank*.
I don't know why, but they made a MAJOR error in the Physiology coloring book by printing on both sides of the page. As soon as you color one page with felt tip pens, you will see that it leaks through and destroys the other side. This is such a basic element of the book that I don't understand why it was overlooked.
great way to learn.......2007-07-12
Super way to learn difficult concepts. I find myself learning in spite of myself. Its really built my confidence too because I have learned that if I stick with the subject long enough, I can get it.
I luv the fundamental idea of this book........2007-05-28
Speaking for myself, I have come to view that the act of coloring does in fact foster retention and understanding. This book really does make learning fun. However, I am surprised that this is the 2nd Edition. This book is in dire need of careful proofreading. I am not qualified to say that there are fundamental errors of physiological facts (this is why I purchased the book) but I have found many many "slip of the pen" type of errors. The least bothersome are a myriad of spelling errors. There are some points where sentences are abruptly cut before completion. Common sense does There are several instances where it is unclear what part is what. Some of these mistakes can not be overcome with common sense making the lesson of the plate very difficult to understand.
P.S. The observant reader will have noticed that I abruptly cut a sentence midway through.
I luv this damn book.......2007-03-14
i have never taken a class for physiology previously, and this book is my saving grace for MCAT prep and just so freagin written well and easy to follow. Highly recommended to anyone in interested in the field!!!

Great!.......2007-09-14
This book is great. I am using it in my coding classes and it is very easy to understand. My students love it. Thanks!
Great book!.......2007-05-21
This book is very easy to understand. Even if you're not going to color in it, it is a great reference book.
It is okay for basic stuff.......2007-03-11
This book is okay for basic high school knowledge, but I wouldn't really recommend it for a college course. I am taking BIO 201 (Human Anatomy and Physiology), and the book wasn't in-depth enough for my course. There were not enough of the muscles and bones covered.
Not very comprehensive - if thats what you're looking for.......2007-02-22
This book is good for younger children or people who just want a very basic overview of the human body. I bought it to help me study for my anatomy class, and this book did not provide nearly enough detail to be a good reference guide for me. If you;re taking a college level anatomy class, buy the more expensive coloring book!
Human Anatomy Coloring Book.......2007-02-19
This is a great Dover style coloring book. Anyone of any age can use it to review Human Anatomy. The generous copyright allows you to make 2 copies without permission. I am scanning the drawings and using them in a Powerpoint Presentation. Human anatomy is dull, and frankly our insides are kind of ugly. This sort of publication takes the formaldehyde smell
out learning anatomy. Kids could color, adults can use computer paint programs to add color. Once scanned the possiblities for using the drawings are endless.

This coloring book is not user-friendly. The pictures are not clearly defined and make it hard to discern what's what in the picture. Look for another book.

I recommend this to anyone interested in learning anatomy. It's a fun way to learn what's what in you body by coloring your systems. Excellent visual way to learn.
Great Learning Resource.......2005-09-23
This is a great learning resources. More pages to fill out than I have time for.
A Great reinforcer of previously learned lessons..........2002-09-15
I was advised by a homeschooling guide to buy this book for my science classes some time ago. I am pleased to say that I did not regret the decision I made to purchase it, as this is an excellent book! At first, I was surprised that a coloring book would be recommended as an educational tool for a first year high school student, but it was actually very helpful to me. Once I was finished completing it, I was delighted to see how vivid and realistic the illustrations became. So delighted that I bought a copy for my younger siblings to try (aged 7-10). Unfortunately they found it a little too daunting, so I'd have to say that it's not the best book for a ten year old or younger. However, if you're looking for a challenging, educational book for a student aged eleven or up, then you should try this one. You might even find yourself picking up a marker and coloring with him.
Not like the coloring books of old...........2001-12-08
I was a little depressed when I sent this to my niece who is brilliant and yet found it a little bit intimidating. To quote her younger sister (by only 9 months), {I don't know Beck, but it looks like a fairly adult hand there>?) I feel that you should maybe have provided an age range? (10-12)? I am hoping that she will put it on her bookshelf and eventually "get into it" I am now wishing I had got it for myself!!!

Acknowledging the difficulty many readers have when first attempting to learn about the brain's psychological functions, the authors of A Colorful Introduction to the Human Brain have created a book that makes the fascinating world of brain psychology research accessible to readers with little or no background in neuroscience. Readers learn the material in several steps. First they read through the introduction and definitions on the left page; then they color the illustration on the facing page; and finally they use the special cover flap to conceal the illustration labels while checking their knowledge, until they feel they have completely learned the material. Review exercises at the end of each chapter provide an opportunity for self-assessment, with answers provided at the end of the book.
John Pinel, a professor of biopsychology at the University of British Columbia, is an award-winning teacher and the author of over 200 scientific articles. However, he is best known for his reader-oriented writing. His clear concise introductions to behavioral neuroscience have inspired, enthralled, and amused a generation of students and lay people.
Customer Reviews:
Finger paint your way through neuroanatomy.......2006-07-11
If you loved your third grade art class, you'll love this brain coloring book. The truth is we learn by doing, using our hands, applying colors. Many areas of the brain are involved in what we think of as simple learning tasks. Adding manual tasks to learning the complicated anatomy of the brain strengthens the learning process - forces you to linger over the page and get involved in learning the structures.
I feel the text on each facing page is quite useful but could have been a little more detailed on the clinical end. You will come out of the 'coloring book' experience with far greater confidence in your understanding of neuroanatomy than you expected. You may find reading on neuropsychology a good deal easier, now that you have, in effect, overstudied the anatomy and physiiology underlying it.
For those who want to go beyond this text to a really superior text in this subject, I highly recommend Clinical Neuroanatomy by FitzGerald and Fokan-Curran published by W. B. Saunders. It is already marvelously colored and illustrated with much greater detail and clinical information. It is an exceptional medical text (and priced accordingly). The medical illustration, scans, photos and other teaching aids are excellent and profuse. The coloring book is just a sort of 'boot camp' to prepare you for this. I have not seen a better text on neuroanatomy. If you are seriously in need of learning or reviewing your knowledge of this subject, this is the one.
ADDENDA: I have just read Pinel's other excellent work called BIOPSYCHOLOGY. Illustrated by his partner (sic) Maggie - superbly and contributing greatly to the success of the book as a great teaching medium in neuropsychology and neurology. It is a textbook for undergraduates in Psychology and assumes little in previous physiology and anatomy, using extensive explanations of vocabulary and concepts. Frankly, you might as well buy this one instead of the coloring book. It will cost more but you will get a lot more out of it along with the same high quality of illustrations necessary to understand this challenging subject. John Pinel has an engaging writing style, some surprising personal anecdotes, and many case histories. I highly recomment BIOPSYCHOLOGY.
Very helpful.......2006-03-16
This is a must for anyone interested in learning about the anatomy of the human brain.
It is also essential for anyone studying physiological and / or biopsychology.
Good for students.......2006-02-18
I bought this book to help my bachelor level students learn the parts of the brain. They found it helpful in their learning process to color the parts of the brain. Although, because they are bachelor level students, there were only a few pages that were surface knowledge...lots of detailed pictures that would be more appropriate for doctorate level.
Good focus on functionally important structures.......2005-11-24
I teach an interdisciplinary course in psychology and neuroscience, and my psych students have found this book helpful for getting up to speed on neuroanatomy. I've also started using some of the pages as overheads during my lectures, since the diagrams are uncluttered and easy to draw on.
I'm writing a review because I thought I should mention that I found this book *much* more useful than its better-known competitor. The other book has more fine-grained anatomical detail, of the sort that would be most useful to someone studying to be a neurosurgeon - but the result is that it's very hard for a casual student to tell what's worth studying or remembering. This book does a much better job of focusing on the important structures, the ones that you're likely to see mentioned in popular science books and articles. The second half (Functional Neuroanatomy, with chapters devoted to the systems subserving different functions) is especially useful.
For anyone interested in self-study, or who just wants a quick reference source for neural structures that they see mentioned in other texts, I'd strongly recommend this book.
A good neuroanatomy resource.......2005-09-30
A very good resource for the beginner neuroanatomy student. Coloring makes learning such complex material fun and if you study the coloring book along with textbook notes and lecture notes, you can really get a great handle on the material.

Human Brain Coloring Book Review.......2007-09-22
I'm using this book in conjuction with a science class at school. Found it helpful in reviewing brain structures, but would not use it alone.
The Human Brain coloring book.......2007-05-12
If you are a visual learner, this coloring book is a must for Neuroanatomy class!
The best to learn neuroanatomy..........2007-04-24
I struggled in Neuroanatomy. Once I got this book after our first test my grade went up a whole letter grade. So if you are like me and a very visual learner...I highly recommend this book. And if you are trying to decide b/w this one and other coloring books, get this one. I tried others and this one was the best. Not only are the pictures and labeling great, but on the side of each picture you color is words which explain how that system, process, etc works. It explains it in terms that are easy to understand and help you remember.
Great Book.......2007-03-09
This book is extremely helpful in learning neuroscience. Especially with pictures of the tracts...It really help you visualize and understand whats going on.. and the descriptions on the side of the coloring page are written very well.
Great by for knowledge of the brain.......2007-01-11
Very helpful in learning more about all of the different parts of the brain. This book makes reading and learning about the brain easy for any age. I used this book right along with my regular book for my class.

Ask yourself if you will really use it..........2007-01-19
I bought the book and never used it. I did use the pencils that came with the book to draw diagrams presented in class. Therefore, I spent $30 on colored pencils.
Neuroanatomy Primer : Color to Learn/With 12 Colored Pencils.......2000-06-20
The Neuroanatomy Primer : Color to Learn/With 12 Colored Pencils is a great addition to any psychology or anatomy student's library. The confusing world of neuro-networking is simplified and made into a hands-on project that keeps one's interest. I recommend using this book to supplement other texts; it allows you to not only read the information but color the areas and happenings that occur in the brain. Reading, seeing and coloring the information is a simple way to break the monotony of only reading and taking notes from a text book. The multicolored pages are then great study guides that attract your attention and are wonderful for last minute glances before a test. The extra time taken to use this book correctly saves time that would have been wasted being confused or trying to learn by only black and white text. I also have found the text to be accurate and condensed into comprehensible sections that aid further with your understanding of such a complex topic. Overall this book is a great learning tool.
Book Description
This guide is an excellent tool for use by itself or with any human anatomy and physiology text. The author's unique approach promotes and reinforces learning on many levels through a wide variety of visual and written exercises. In its review of the human body, from microscopic to macroscopic levels, the workbook covers the most important and useful aspects of human anatomy and physiology, and offers clinically oriented activities.
"At the Clinic" questions help readers apply what they've learned to real-life clinical settings; "Incredible Journey" visualization exercises in each chapter summarize chapter content, allowing readers to apply what they've learned; the many written exercises include completion from a selection of key choices, matching terms or descriptions, labeling diagrams, true/false, and definition questions. Elimination questions require readers to discover the similarities or dissimilarities among a number of structures or objects; a clear design, along with Marieb's hallmark friendly writing style, make learning more enjoyable; and more than 100 coloring exercises reinforce concepts through active learning.
Designed to engage the introductory allied health reader.
Customer Reviews:
great study aid.......2007-09-30
Great tool for anyone taking A&P. Easy pictures to follow and great study questions. A must for passing this class.
Anatomy & Physiology Coloring Workbook 8th edition.......2007-01-21
This book was necessary for my schooling. Its good.
great textbook adjunct.......2006-11-27
This book was really useful - the coloring parts are especially good if you are a visual learner. There's also more to it than just coloring in pictures - there are lots of fill-in-the-blanks sections to test your knowledge and review major ideas. This is where the only criticism lies....if you don't have the textbook (or a good knowledge of the material) then some sections will be hard to complete. Answers are provided, however, so overall, it is a really useful book and offers more than you might first assume.
Dissapointed.......2006-08-13
The paper has a wax like feel. It is slippery for colored pencil. There is not enough tooth in the paper to hold the colored pencil. No fun. :(
Great filler and study guide.......2006-07-21
I needed a good 'filler' and study guide for my Anatomy classes and this seems to fill the need beautifully. Not used it yet but will come back after the year starts in Sept. and give an update.
Book Description
This coloring guide serves as an extremely effective tool for students learning human anatomy, as it gives them the opportunity to interactively learn the subject through the act of coloring. New to this edition, the chapters are now organized by system, and the information within chapters has been reformatted to include text on each lefthand page, with corresponding illustrations on righthand pages.
Customer Reviews:
Like New.......2006-07-15
A few pages are colored in and a couple pages have anatomy vocabulary writen in. Barely used and little wear on corners. Is very useful for studying. Good for scanning multiple copies for studying.
Provocative and Enlightening Work.......2002-12-26
Put simply, this is a work of genius. Tweitmeyer is considered by many to be the Barry Bonds of his field--he makes his own rules and and stands alone at the top of his profession. He was at the top of his game at the time he wrote this book. Although hard to find, it is well worth the search, and autographed copies from his ill-fated book tour carry a large premium. This is a great read for both the beginner or the accomplished vivisectionist. My one complaint that keeps this from getting 5 stars is that I would have liked to have seen the illustrations colored in so I didn't have to do it myself. I blame McCracken for that.
Greatest American Text Book.......2002-12-23
This is possibly the finest book on human anatomy I have ever read/used. Now I know where both babies and poo come from. It has helped me tremendously in my work and hobbies. It is the next best thing to having an actual human cadaver lying on your kitchen table, and we all know how hard they are to come by, except for in the winter. Its full color illustrations truly bring the human viscera to life and the prose is remarkable in that it universally appeals to professional and layman alike. Highly recommended for the medical student or someone like me who just has a thirst for knowing whats inside the human body, but is closely watched by the authorities. And we all know how hard it is to fool the MAN. If I could only own one book for the rest of my life, and the way things are going, this could easily come true, it would be this one. Kudos and my hat is off to you Dr. Tweitmeyer for authoring this great, great work of American medical literature. I hope your next book is as much help to me as this one.
Educational/Informative - The Human Anatomy for students!.......1998-12-27
This text on the human anatomy is an easy read informative and educational book that will help the student in the learning process. The text book takes you step by step through the body so you can go at your own pace (or the pace of the instructor!). It's an ideal text that all can enjoy (if you enjoy anatomy) and learn a great deal from. I am impressed with the book and its relation to the reader (student)!

Twietmeyer is an anatomy guru of the first order. I couldn't put it down
Book Description
Each year, thousands of students studying to be doctors, physical therapists, and medical technicians have to master the art of anatomy—and an equal number of artists want to capture realistic movement and posture. What better way to remember each bone, muscle, and organ than by coloring a picture? The very act of drawing entices the student to spend more time with the image, and to examine the body’s structure more closely. That’s why this one-of-a-kind coloring book, with its concisely written text and easy-to-color-in medical illustrations, has always been such a huge seller—and why it’s now revised into this new user-friendly format. Arranged according to body systems, the color-key organization links anatomical terminology to the more than 1,000 precise and detailed black-and-white illustrations.
Readers will also appreciate the sleek, lay-flat design, cardboard insert to place under the page for easy drawing, and high-quality paper that makes doing the work simpler and more pleasurable.
Customer Reviews:
Good primer for A&P.......2007-04-12
Not the prototypical anatomies with crayolas... Very thorough and detailed guide, especially well laid out. An excellent primer before a course in A&P at any level. The plates were of such detail that I didn't think to color them, but found myself engrossed in study. Caveat: the plates are not consistently the best for coloring, due to the use of shading for detail and depth. I don't regret that, as I compared it to several others available. I bought this in-store for the practical examples and explanations for joint types, overview of systems, etc. Good 'brass tacks' guide and a nice, clean, detailed one to supplement other texts.
BTW, Liked how the text referred to what color types I am to use. Perhaps the authors were being mnemonically pedagogical. Perhaps.
