Multi Media Public Speaking Training.......2006-07-19
'Audience Centered' seems to be an obvious off-shoot of the teaching styles, that have become hyper-popular over the last decade or two, that claim to be 'Student Centered'. Is it just a buzz word, or is there something in it? As another reviewer points out, Audience Centered public speaking dates back at least as far back as Aristotle.
In keeping with the new-fangled approaches towards learning, 'Pubic Speaking: An Audience Centered Approach' offers the student a full multi-media experience, that is reflected in the price. However I love such an approoach as it allows the student to learn in his or her preferred learning style.
While I don't need to go into the contents of the course because the product description by the publisher is more than adequate. This renewed package though, is a veritable collection of expert advice on all aspects of public speaking, from preparing to completion. What is more, you can actually see the speeches being delivered through examples provided by online video clips.
Without a doubt the price for this package is a little steep. You might fid it worth it, or you might not. Value is so subjective after all, but 'Public Speaking: An Audience Centered Approach' certainly takes advantage of the many more learning channels available today, than a book alone can, or even an audio/book course.
The Sixth and Ever Better Edition.......2006-07-11
You can't say that the audience-centered concept used in this book was pioneered by them. After all, in the first paragraph the authors give credit to Aristotle for defining the elements of speechmaking as 'of speaker, subject and person addresed - it is the last one, the herer, that determines the speaker's end and object.'
The first edition of this book, about 15 years ago, set the tone for what has now become the sisth edition, with each edition improved by audience feedback and new educational concepts. The general concept of keeping the audience at the center of of the speakers mind through all of the steps in the process.
Of course, this does not mean that the speaker tells the audience only what they want to hear; to do that would not convey anything to the audience but a good feeling. Some of the example speeches, 'I Have a Dream,' Martin Luther King, Jr., speak to people holding views very opposed to his.
The highly illustrated book is carefully organized with a mixture of text, tables, drawings, comments and questions to maintain the students interest while educating him. Indeed these techniques are some that can be used by the student in his speeches.
Good copy.......2005-09-17
I know that this is a teacher's edition but I presumed that because it was, it would have come with the DVD which is included in the student's addition. Other wise the book is exactly the same as the student's edition and was sealed as stated. Overall, I am pleased with the transaction.

Easy to read- great to use.......2000-04-25
This is a really good book. I used it for a college class on public speaking, and I would have been lost without it. It covers things that you always forget to include, and great hints on how to increase your confidence and persuade an audience. For someone like me who was terrified, but no longer is of public speaking, and for those who just need a refrsher course, this book is brilliant.

I'm pleased with the book, the condition, the price. I didn't ask for rushed delivery and it took about 2 weeks to arrive.
Great Book.......2007-09-28
This book is very easy to read and learn from. The CD is great for practice exams. I love it!
ICKY BOOK.......2007-01-20
As a speech pathology student who was required to take an anatomy class with this being the required text - this book was horrible. In each chapter there is sooo much missing information and holes and gaps in the information that it made learning anatomy that much harder. The only good thing about this book is that it comes with a helpful anatomy cd for the cdrom... i preferred the Netter anatomy book instead.
Great book, Great CD.......2007-01-04
This book helped me to get a great grade in my class. The diagrams and illustrations are very helpful. The CD-Rom is extremely helpful since it has color illustrations and quizzes in each section. I really advise all users to utilize the CD-Rom!
A wonderful, scientific voyage.......2006-10-10
This book offers a broad coverage of the underlying structures and processes of speech. Beyond a primitive stage, man is unique in his ability to convey information by using his voice. And he has developed this ability from systems designed for more vital goals (eg., respiration and nutrition). In this respect, the work by Seikel, King and Drumright proves a great resource for studying the entire apparatus involved in voice production and perception, specifically the systems of respiration (energy source), phonation (voicing), articulation and resonation filtering), mastication and deglution, hearing, and neural. Furthermore, it includes several appendices for quick access to anatomical terms, morphology of terms, muscles, sensors and nerves, and a review of pathologies affecting production of voice. What I liked the most about the book is that you are systematically guided through all the germane systems, and when pertinent, the book provides references for deeper understanding of the material. Besides, after you have read sufficient content, the book shows summaries for reinforcement of the learnt concepts. Also, there are clinical notes distributed throughout the text, with germane discussions (related processes, pathologies, etc.). And every chapter has a set of questions for assessment of your understanding (do not worry, answers are included!).
If you are concretelly focused on speech production, this book is a gold mine. They review the Source-Filter theory of speech production, and you can somewhat independently approach the excitation source and the filter ("shaping" of the source signal in the supraglottal airways). There is also an interesting discussion of the Central Control Theory and the Action Theory Model for coordinated articulation. Naturally, you will be presented a detailed list of muscles, and the qualitative effects of their contraction. Additionally, the CD-ROM includes the Anatesse software, useful for additional review of the subjects, and for self evaluation too! And finally, this is not your typical, dry textbook. On the contrary, it's a completely friendly, fun and professional intellectual product. Fully recommended.
Book Description
IN MIXED COMPANY has shown a substantial increase in popularity and acclaim with each successive edition. Consequently, in the Fifth Edition, the author preserved the essence of previous versions, and expanded somewhat the central unifying theme that cooperation in small groups is usually superior to competition. In Mixed Company thoroughly addresses the theme of cooperation in small groups. The communication competence model continues to guide discussions of key small group concepts and processes. Systems theory also remains as a key theoretical component of the text and finally, an extensive discussion and analysis of power in small groups continues to separate IN MIXED COMPANY from other textbooks.

The Text is Excellent........2006-03-24
I have taught with several of the major readers on the market: Samovar and Porter's, Nakayama and Martin, and others. This text has the most well written readings and contains articles on many seminal issues, context (Hall), time (Hall), etc. This text has the LEAST blatantly fluff filled articles intended only to titillate and pander to students. Additionally, if you review some of the other texts, you will see that they often have poorly referenced articles and the work is less than scholarly. It is possible to write a chapter for a reader such as this and support your content with support and references. The articles here are interesting, well written, well referenced, and more-grounded in theory and research than a lot of the competition. I recommend it highly. MLK
Great Book!! Very Informative.......2003-07-09
I was lucky enough to take a class from Professor Samovar. This was a great book and a good introduction to intercultural communication.

Scottie.......2007-09-26
This is the best book I've found that helps to organize the integration space within the industry. This book has helped to organize my thoughts and communicate with others effectively on how to leverage integration patterns. I highly recommend this book to help obtain a foundational understaning of the integration space.
Excellent patterns book.......2007-08-28
Upon recently changing jobs and focusing on messaging design and architecture, I was steered toward this book by my peers. Without getting into too much detail, before joining my new team, I had never heard of patterns (came from a product support area), much less asynchronous messaging design. Needless to say, this book has been invaluable in my learning process as well as conveying our direction to others.
This book is written in such a way that it is very intuitive. Diagrams help support the concepts and code examples as well.
I would highly recommend this as a must read/reference guide for anyone designing messaging solutions.
Great book for messaging pattern understanding.......2007-08-27
This is a fantastic book if you are looking for patterns to base your messaging designs and architecture around. The way this book goes about explaining some of the asynchronous messaging patterns seemed to provide a great deal of benefit to developers and designers who were stuck in the synchronous way of doing things. Great explanations and illustrations, would recommend to anyone researching EAI or ESB technologies or just a more structured, efficient way of messaging in general.
Enterprise Application Integration .......2007-07-29
I've been using the patterns in this book for several years now. These patterns help me to focus on the problems my customers need solved rather than what technology to use. This has helped to produce numerous successful systems and these patterns have consequently become the basis for many architecural redesign efforts at my company.
The Bible for Enterprise Application Integration.......2007-07-12
As a developer working on application integration for the last 5 years I am so thrilled about this purchase. Just started out reading and though I feel a little overwhelmed I can so much relate to all the patterns being discussed. Its being tough to digest and register the terminologies but I am sure I will get there as I progress. Definitely the best technical books I have ever purchased and is must have for any one who is involved with application integration !

Not great, but not bad either!.......2007-10-07
I definitely recommend a different book -- not this one to start off with. The drawings are sometimes hard to understand. I have taught ASL to hearing adults and this would not be my first choice to start off with. I liked a different book that I recently reviewed. The title escapes my mind, but check out my other reviews and find the five-star review :)
not the best, but not the worst.......2007-06-03
Some of my complaints include the problematic fact that there are many signs that appear in the dialogues and are not in the vocabulary section, nor illustrated anywhere else, and many of the signs are outdated - one must have a teacher or deaf/hoh person around to help sort it out.
Most of the dialogues are pretty boring and inspired me to write a new one which was a very fruitful and a much better learning experience than the book. Also, one of the teachers at Palomar College created a vocabulary video which should be on the dvd that comes with the book.
But, on the plus side, the expressions are very good and the signs are clear. The dvd is good and the characters well done tho as I said above, it is missing the vocab signs.
Enjoy Dancing Hand Talk! LI
Learning American Sign Language.......2007-05-21
I bought this book because it was required for my class. The pictures are clear, good diologue practices, vocabulary set up nicely. I was not happy about the order of the individual chapters; they could have been set up better. I would have also benefited from some explanations. It was hard to study on my own for classes missed.
Good Choice.......2007-05-02
I have spent a great deal of time looking for a text to use for my class. Although there is not an abundance of activities, this book has students working with a conversation from the first lesson. The available instructor's manual clearly states that this text is not intended to stand alone and encourages the instructor to add activities and vocabulary appropriate for the class. I do not recommend this as a "teach yourself" book but think it is great for a class text.

Book Description
Unlike many similar books currently on the market, this reference does not prescribe a single approach to phonetical disorders. Therapists are now given a choice of methods with this eclectic perspective on the nature, assessment, and treatment of this type of communication impairment. Current research data, coverage of dialect and information on the use of technology in clinical phonology is included in this updated version of the classic in the field of phonology. The authors have eloquently synthesized the literature so that readers can view clinical phonology from a broad perspective. Designed for speech pathologists.

I found the 5th Edition to be overpriced. The 4th edition offered the same information and much cheaper!
hard book .......2005-10-17
THis book is extremly detailed and the words are written in a tightly compacted format.
THe book gives you too much information to absorb within each chapter

Book Description
Thank You for Arguing is your master class in the art of persuasion, taught by professors ranging from Bart Simpson to Winston Churchill. The time-tested secrets the book discloses include Cicero’s three-step strategy for moving an audience to actionÑas well as Honest Abe’s Shameless Trick of lowering an audience’s expectations by pretending to be unpolished. But it’s also replete with contemporary techniques such as politicians’ use of “code” language to appeal to specific groups and an eye-opening assortment of popular-culture dodges, including:
The Eddie Haskell Ploy
Eminem’s Rules of Decorum
The Belushi Paradigm
Stalin’s Timing Secret
The Yoda Technique
Whether you’re an inveterate lover of language books or just want to win a lot more anger-free arguments on the page, at the podium, or over a beer, Thank You for Arguing is for you. Written by one of today’s most popular online language mavens, it’s warm, witty, erudite, and truly enlightening. It not only teaches you how to recognize a paralipsis and a chiasmus when you hear them, but also how to wield such handy and persuasive weapons the next time you really, really want to get your own way.

An Excellent Book for The Writer or Public Speaker.......2007-09-16
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Public Speaking or persuasive writing. Heinrichs keeps his readers interested in everything he has to say through the use of real-world and pop culture references. Random bits of information in the margins keep every page interesting and well worth your time.
Good but a lot of information.......2007-07-30
This is a great book if you like the subject matter. But don't think you are going to walk away ready to put all this into practice in your next public address or debate with a recalcitrant teen. Keep in mind the author's subtle point that the book effectively represents a summary session on a discipline that is thousands of years old. Not that you won't have fun trying it out though.
Excellent read.......2007-07-13
This is an excellent work and I highly recommend it. I just completed a class in composition and rhetoric at college and this should have been the text book. It is funny but highly informational at the same time.
Remedial Rhetoric.......2007-07-04
I enjoyed the book so much that I signed up to received regular emails illustrating "figures" of speech, as they are used popular media. Jay Heinrichs presents the fundamentals of rhetorics in an unpretentious and transparent manner. A lot of information is presented, and I have come to regret, like Heinrichs, that rhetoric is not taught in schools. I would have benefited from having learned these concepts in grade school. Having been persuaded the power of these techniques, I did get a little bored with the ending, where he makes a case that a rhetorically-trained society would be a more democratic one. While I enjoyed the book tremendously, I didn't give it a "5" because I felt the production of the book was poor. I had to send back my first one because it was defective (missing 30 pages), and the layout of the pages looks like it was done by a high-schooler. Also, I thought the conclusion a bit anticlimactic.
Great introduction to persuasion.......2007-05-30
Jay has written a thoroughly enjoyable book that is not only informative, but funny. Many of the concepts Jay writes about I feel I was following naturally, but never saw written down so succinctly. It is good to know that other people enjoy the useful form of argument, the art of rhetoric, still. I feel that most people I meet these days shy away from a good old fashioned debate, just for the intellectual fun of it! My Italian wife was born and raised in this rhetorical way, and this book reminded me how lucky I am to be with someone who can argue, without fighting.
