I just marvel at the grace and dignity of George and his work. The story of his life is just as interesting as his life's work. I do home remodeling and occasionally have the chance to make a piece of custom furniture for a client. I find his accomplishments truly amazing.

This is a superb book on George Nakashima, written by his daughter. It is a good complement to "Sould of a tree" written by Nakashima himself. While "Sould of a tree" looked at the furniture, "Nature form & Spirit" starts with the life of Nakashima and how he came to design all his furniture and the houses. It is not a technical book, but it gives an interesting insight on the philosophy and thinking process behind the designs. Much more than a coffe table book, an inspiration for all woodworking lovers

We've always loved his work, that which is at the Metropolitan Museum and also the arboretum library in Minneapolis, completely furnished with Nakashima's work. Depending on what you are purchasing this book for...my interest was for fiber art work which it fits the bill totally. The drawings from Mr. Haeckel are superb. I only wish they were in color...which you can purchase the more expensive color plate book. But still this is quite worth the money.

I recommend a different version of this book, also sold on Amazon - link below. I am not sure if it contains the same set of illustrations, but many of the illos are in color, and it includes a CD containing all the pics from the book.

Anyone who 'knows' Dover books, will probably agree that they offer good quality for very reasonable prices. There is nothing 'wrong' with this book, except that all the plates are in black and white, and there is no information on Haeckel and his times. Prestel has also published this book of plates, with a highly informative article on Haeckel, his influences, and those influenced by him included, AND with many of the plates 'in color' (that is, often one color in different -subtle - hues, or a color scheme based on two colors). Unless you are a strictly 'black and white' person, I would advise you to look for the Prestel book.

This book is full of illustration of organisms you can find on nature.I repeat, it is not fantasy, these beautiful illustration are drawings of things that are right there, sometimes too small to see with the naked eye, in nature, and one can only awe at such beauty and design skills. Haeckel did a great job combining biology with art, and it shows on this book.
A note of advise: these edition has color, the other one is black&white.

I've wanted to get one of Haeckel's books for a while. His drawings are lovely, truely inspirational....BUT this book was a big disappointment, and one which could have been avoided had I paid closer attention to the product description. It is pocket-sized: 3 inches across!!
It's hard to see the magnificent detail in Haeckel's work on a page so small.
this is one of those things I would NEVER have bought if I picked it up in a book store. It looks like one of those little gift books..
so, if you buy this, do so with the knowledge that it is tiny, and consider buying the larger edition. it's what I would have done, had I looked at/ considered the dimensions of this book.

Amazing images of pollen spores, bats' faces, moths, diatoms, and more - drawn by the master. Ernst Haeckel's prints were a huge influence in the Art Nouveau movement, and the introduction to the book discusses that. Just absolutely brilliant - a surreal and gorgeous look at nature at every scale.

I was expecting crispy photos of professional quality with good levels of contrast to define edges, variation, etc. of the forms photographed. Instead most of the photos were somewhat blurry and of low-contrast, mostly grays, leaving depth to be inferred and not readable. I admit that I'm disappointed.

Karl Blossfeldt's imagery conjures up strange imaginary worlds. An absolute must have for artists searching out unusual organic forms as inspiration. Straight forward full frame B and W shots make photo copying or scanning a breeze. Gaudi, and Ernst along with the Brothers Quay come to mind.

This coloring book is the best animal safari! Your child will see wonderful close-ups of a variety of animals. This coloring experience is what you would hope for in a zoo trip. Environmental Art for Kids, the sub-title. I like that. But what does it mean? This book takes kids outdoors to collect "stuff" from nature, like leaves and pinecones, or indoors to collect "stuff" like envelopes and newspaper. Once collected, there are about 150 projects for open-ended things to make with them. I especially liked making a "leaf burst" with supple autumn leaves and paint. I tried it and it's beautiful, just like the book says. Easy too. I also like the page layout...one big idea per page, book stays open nicely, great icons to help with other decisions to be made like how difficult and so forth. And can you believe it gives recipes for making your own homemade paste, glue, yarn, and chalk? Even how to build a kiln outside and bake your own clay, dry your own flowers. This is a pretty nice book for parents or teachers, camps, or any one who likes kids.

This little book is a real must-have if you're setting up a Waldorf environment in your home. Tons of ideas for Nature tables in each season of the year, wonderful full-color pictures, and patterns and directions to make your own creations. I especially love the Winter tableau with King Winter and Mrs. Thaw. If you're a crafty person you'll find this book easier to use than a complete novice would. But the photography of the seasonal table alone is enough to justify buying this book! Although the Nature table is discussed in Earthways and All Year Round, this book goes much farther and I turn to it often. A necessary addition to your Waldorf library.

What a wonderful little book! It's packed with seasonal table ideas and instructions for making the dolls, animals and other craft suggestions. The color photographs are inspiring. After buying this book, I immediately set out to make Mother Earth and the Earth Babies. My daughter is now a preteen, but she still enjoys having these special touches in our home. She rarely adds to the scenes anymore, but having a bit of nature around the house is comforting. During this time of growth and change, she outwardly denies her interest in such "babyish" traditions, but if I try to alter our traditions, she voices her disappointment. I think long after she's moved on, I'll continue to set up a seasonal table -- just for me! For anyone interested in starting a Seasonal Table or if you want new ideas, consider adding this gem to your craft library.
