Book Description
Molecular Biology of the Cell is the classic in-depth text reference in cell biology. By extracting the fundamental concepts from this enormous and ever-growing field, the authors tell the story of cell biology, and create a coherent framework through which non-expert readers may approach the subject. Written in clear and concise language, and beautifully illustrated, the book is enjoyable to read, and it provides a clear sense of the excitement of modern biology. Molecular Biology of the Cell sets forth the current understanding of cell biology (completely updated as of Autumn 2001), and it explores the intriguing implications and possibilities of the great deal that remains unknown.
The hallmark features of previous editions continue in the Fourth Edition. The book is designed with a clean and open, single-column layout. The art program maintains a completely consistent format and style, and includes over 1,600 photographs, electron micrographs, and original drawings by the authors. Clear and concise concept headings introduce each section. Every chapter contains extensive references. Most important, every chapter has been subjected to a rigorous, collaborative revision process where, in addition to incorporating comments from expert reviewers, each co-author reads and reviews the other authors' prose. The result is a truly integrated work with a single authorial voice.

bio book.......2007-09-15
the book is amazing. i got it in great shape, and aside from it weighing 7 lbs...it's a great book for a biology class.
Best Science Book I've Ever Read.......2007-07-09
If you are taking a cell biology book, this is the book to read. Even if your instructor assigns a lighter book, you can still read this and benefit. It's one of those rare books that go into the details while still being readible. It's incredibly well organized and well written.
A thousand carats text!.......2007-06-27
The undeniable importance of the molecular biology has achieved in the last two decades such transcendental outburst of energy, advances and extraordinary finfings that hardly we should devote entirely to be informed about the multiple consequences of its profound implications.
This book is a true effort worthy to admire, because it has been written with this kind spirit of sharing the knowledge wothout pretensions or any other considerations.
Once you open it, you will be absoltely engaged due its relevant interest, because of the fact there`s a lot of secondnary readings and discoveries all over the world that it should be be stated of this way. May one not being aware about the structure of the cell and the mesmerizing devices the nature employs to show us its lavish dynamics.
Additionally the support material of this CD ROM simply is priceless. I insist, you don't need to be an expert in this issue to start.
Decide by yourself and please, dont wait so long.
Molecurar biology of the cell.......2007-05-18
It's a very complete and updated book about all items refered to molecular biology of the cell. I specially use it for all the information I need for the 1st year of Medicine School.
Very recomendable
This book is awesome........2007-05-17
It really gets you into the bioscientific mind type of reasoning.
Book Description
The Biology of Cancer is a comprehensive, authoritative, up-to-date textbook written by a major researcher in the field. It clearly presents the principles of cancer biology in an organized and accessible fashion. The information unfolds through the presentation of key experiments which give readers a sense of discovery, and provides insights into the conceptual foundation underlying cancer biology.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-10-05
It's a great book for a concise and comprehensive review of cancer and its pathways.
fantastic book.......2007-06-14
This book is a fantastic read for anyone interested in the cancer biology. It is well-written, comprehensive, current, and the illustrations are superb. The enclosed CD-ROM of the book's figures has proved invaluable for creating Powerpoint presentations on various topics in cancer.
Biology of Cancer by Robert A. Weinberg.......2007-05-14
Excellent, clear, comprehensive overview with useful CD supplement
The Biology of Cancer CL, by Robert A. Weinberg.......2007-05-07
it is a must have book for someone in cancer research. It covers both molecular and biological aspects of cancer very well.
Comprehensive.......2007-03-10
As a colorectal cancer survivor, I've undertaken a self-study of my cancer in particular, and the disease in general. Saltz's Colorectal Cancer is the comprehensive text for me, but it is better read with a foundation in the nuts and bolts of the disease. Sompayrac's How Cancer Works is a wonderful text for explaining what the nuts and bolts are, but this book, Biology of Cancer, not only explains these in better detail, it also explains how researchers figured all this out. The illustrations, graphs and photos are worth the price of the book itself--you can see the discoveries unfold in front of your own eyes. You don't have to be a scientist to start reading it, but you will probably have to become something of a scientist and retain what you are absorbing as you progress through the book. This is a textbook that is something of an all-star collection of information from a variety of scientific research textbooks.

Really Fast.......2007-10-09
The book was delivered the second day after booked on the net, and in a fair price.
Operating compatability.......2007-09-15
A well priced product and from its description ideal for lecture purposes.
Unfortunately it does not work using Windows Media Player, Nero Showtime or Open Source media player on my computer using Windows XP.
Amazon returns system worked well with full refund but I would have liked a version that worked.
review on STUDY GUIDE.......2005-10-10
after being utterly discusted with this poor excuse of a study guide, i thought i would read some horrible reviews on the guide to make me feel better. to my dismay, people can't read and they only posted reviews for the text book, which is actually good but those reviews should be posted elsewhere.
You know there is something wrong with this guide when you see them call CH3-CH3 methane (pg 3 not to mention they got linoleic and linolenic mixed up) or on the multiple choice on page 19 has ribosomes as one of the right answers for proteins involved in transcription.
i have not done a lot of the questions in the book and all ready i see errors on every second page. i wonder if i will actually recieve lower grades if i study from this poorly written book.
I love study guides and have used them for stewert's calculus, campbell's biology and bruice's organic chemistry in college. were there some occasional mistakes... yes but overall they were good. this study manual however seems to have been written by a tribe of wild monkeys pounding on a keyboard. Save your 23 dollars
Inferior in every way.......2005-08-18
The Alberts text (Molecular Biology of the Cell, Fourth Edition) is superior to this text in every way. It is clearer, more precise, and contains more information. This one manages to make simple concepts become quite difficult.
Excellent but starting to get outdated.......2005-03-06
Excellent. Hands down the best book out there for cell biology. Gives a thorough look at the exciting unraveling of the cell. Figures are exceptional. However, being now ~3 years old and due to the intense output and growth of scientific literature this book is starting to get outdated. There have been several advances in a number of transport systems (i.e. Nuclear transport and regulation of gene expression). A new edition in the next year or so would hopefully address these issues.

Customer Reviews:
Beware of the digital upgrade.......2007-09-05
I wanted to forwarn other users, especially students, of the pitfalls of the digital upgrade option:
1) Don't buy the upgrade if you're hoping to get access to it through the library computers, instead of having to lug the massive book to school. Apparently, you cannot view any online book from more than 7 different computers within a 30 day period. And, consequently, if the cache happens to get cleared after each session (as is the case with most shared computers), then you're limited to only 7 sessions with ANY computer.
2) Beware that the book is hard to read online. It's great for adding annotations (highlighting text, adding bookmarks, typing notes, etc.), but it's a real strain on the eyes if you try to read a full chapter. The text is low contrast (gray on white) and low resolution. Even when you use the Zoom-in feature (which lets you increase the size a little bit), it's still hard on the eyes. The text is still just blurry enough to make you think you might need glasses. After several chapters, you probably will need glasses :-)
You can check the quality first by viewing the Preview. That's representative of the whole book. Try reading an entire page and decide for yourself. On the plus side, if you do buy the book, and realize that these issues really do pose a problem for you, Amazon lets you request a refund, as long as you have viewed less than 20% of the book. 20% of 1300 pages is a lot, so you should be fine.
From Start to End.......2007-03-28
This is a great educational text. Each chapter starts from cellular level and progresses to the functional and clinical level. Being a chiropractor and working with the spine everyday I need to understand exactly where the problem starts and not focus on the symptoms. This text has allowed me to understand what is neurophysiologically going on with my patients and improve their course of treatment. As described the neurological system is the electricity of the body and if a fuse decides to blow you need to know where to look.
Impressive for a textbook.......2007-02-13
As far as textbooks go, this has to be one of the best that I have come across...and I have come across quite a few. The material is divided into closely related sections, and the text is clear and to the point in its explanation. Not much filler text or needless material. The diagrams are pretty clear and well positioned in the sections also.
Great Reference Book.......2007-01-06
The text is extremely clear and to the point. The diagrams are also simple to understand. Every major topic in neurosci is discussed, allowing you to get an excellent foundation such that you could read any recent publications on that topic and understand completely what the authors are referring to.
A Masterful Medical Book of Great Importance Written by a Nobel Laureate!.......2006-06-07
I am a Female Reconstructive Surgeon who while reading a diversified field of topics have fallen very fond of a particular work. This is Principles of Neural Science. having just completed the 2000 edition I can guarrantee that the new edition due June 2006 will be even more captivatiing. If you have the opportunity to see Dr Kandel speak please do he is an academic historian who gives a broad history of each critical piece of medical history to each of his topics. But returning to his epic, Principles of Neural Science is akin to Newtons Principia in that is a sublime masterpiece. The Kandell prose is colorful, smooth and insightful for medical science. I have found it easy to read 100-200 pages a day so that the 1400 page book took only a week to discover. The illustrations are the best for any field of Medicine and I have read alll the classics- Harrisions & Cecils Medicine and Schwartz and Sabistons General Surgery neither of these books elucidates the subjugate field with this type of clarity and instructional prose. Do as I have done and preorder the new edition. Those with any interest in the brain will certainly be amazed at the easy depth of information you will achieve. Believe me I am writing a book -Female Reconstructive Surgery and I will be implementing operative 17.2 million pixel photography to achieve the splendid vision the Kandel has produced with his illustrations. I have learned so much on how a book for Surgeons should be written from this Nobel Laureate

Book Description
Essential Cell Biology, Second Edition contains basic, core knowledge about how cells work. It has a proven track record in providing students with a conceptual and accessible grounding in cell biology. The text and figures have been prepared to be easy-to-follow, accurate, clear and engaging for the introductory student. Each section follows logically from the previous one, telling a story, rather than being a collection of facts. Questions integrated throughout each chapter encourage the reader to pause, think about what they have read, and attempt to apply the new knowledge in ways that test their understanding. Based on user feedback, the Second Edition now offers increased coverage of genetics and more experimental background. It is completely up-to-date.
Customer Reviews:
Mwentzler.......2007-09-27
Is an read easy and understandable read. Explains all topics very thoroughly yet in a clear concise manner especially for a biology text book.
Very good book.......2007-09-24
It's kind of hard to judge a textbook, especially when you're a student. But i can honestly say that this book is very straight forward. The diagrams are great, and especially if you read the diagrams as you're reading the book, they add a lot of depth and diversity to the reading. The text itself is not mundane...you won't fall asleep reading it. The CD it comes with is nice....but i tend not to use it that much...all it is, is just video clips. Overall i'd say this is one of the best, if not THE best, biology book i've used.
HOWEVER! Remember that this IS a bio book and it DOES get a little tedious at points
Cell Biology made clear.......2007-03-08
Great book. Although not a basic book, this text make many aspects of cell biology very clear. I would highly recommend it.
Essential Cell Biology 2nd Ed........2006-11-06
This is probably one of the best cell biology books out there. It's easy to understand, covers all the basics, and the CD included with it has really helpful videos.
Fine book, for whatever it matters.......2006-02-28
The book is decent. To be honest though, reviewing textbooks is kind of funny. Does it matter what I say? I suppose if you're ordering this book because you honestly just have a burning desire to learn about essential cell biology, well... the more power to you. You'll learn it just fine from this book. If you're just buying the book because it's the required text for your college class (like I expect), well yeah, doesn't really matter what I say, does it?
Book Description
Now fully updated and revised, the new Fourth Edition of Cell and Molecular Biology not only offers you and your students all of the latest research, it also gives students the tools they need to understand the science behind cell biology and ultimately succeed in your course. This text is ideal for sophomore/junior-level courses in cell biology offered out of biology or molecular and cell biology departments.
Cell and Molecular Biology provides an alternative for faculty looking for a text that concentrates on core concepts without sacrificing coverage of experimental evidence. Karp explores core concepts in considerable depth, and presents experimental detail when it helps to explain and reinforce the concept being explained. This edition also continues to offer an exceedingly clear presentation and excellent art program, both of which have received high praise in prior editions.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent introductory book.......2007-07-19
I've come to appreciate this book more and more over its succeeding editions. It has now replaced both the Alberts et al. and the Lodish et al. books (both nevertheless excellent) as my favorite textbook on cell and molecular biology.
It is concise, covers a very large range of subjects and has very clear graphics. I think it is better balanced than many of its competitors in the sense that the reader never gets the impression that the author sacrificed certain subjects to give more room to his favorite ones. On many occasions, I was surprised to find things in here that I couldn't find in the bigger (and more "fundamental") Alberts and Lodish.
It references papers and review articles that are very current, and is very up to date on its content.
I think Gerald Karp is doing a very good job with each new iteration of this book and I will recommend it to my students.
Excellent book!!.......2006-01-09
This is one of the most complete and easy-to-read book ever! I have studied with Gerald Karp books since I was an undergraduate student (Biochemistry, and Karp book was always by my side, very useful). This book explain the cellular metabolism, structures (cytoskeleton, microtubules, filaments, genes, relations between genes and proteins, DNA repair, cell cycle, cell signalling, lot of concepts that are not easy to understand at first, Karp does it very simple. You will love this book. I can strongly recommend it. Another excellent book I can recommend is Molecular Biology of the CELL by Bruce Alberts....is excellent! and before you take an exam, I will suggest the "Outline of Molecular and Cell Biology" by the Schaum's series. Well, that's it for now, I wish you the best in your career (I have been there, I know how hard it can be and choose the proper books!) and always remember, keep working and practicing, because practice make the Master!! :)
Your friend,
Laura Fazio

Great job.......2005-09-26
The book was in great condition. Seller let me know that the book was in the mail which was nice.
Concise story of cell biology.......2002-01-04
Another introductory book in the biology of the cell. I would say that the book is divided into mainly two sections, Cell structure and DANA, DANA replications etc. Second part takes almost two thirds of the book. I would prefer to read other Gene books when it comes to that point but for the cell structure, it is not bad. Some colored pictures, computer animations makes it easy to visualize things. Sections called "experimental pathways" scattered throughout the text takes you into current issues related to the subject. They are also quite sophisticated issues rather than practical problems. I think this book requires considerable guidance when read alone. I could not call this book as self sufficient or easy to read one compared to books by Alberts or Baltimore.
He's got it all here in a nutshell.......2000-12-07
All biology, biochemistry, and premed students will find this text an indispensible source of information for anything there is to know about cells. This is one text that can't possibly be read and fully understood overnight; just take a little bit at a time at any convenient moment and it will all come together in your mind before you know it!

Buyer beware..........2007-10-08
This book is little more than a glossary accompanied with pages to write in.
Not particularly impressed.
what you want is the fourth edition.......2005-08-30
I'm sure this book was great in the 90s, but this is the 21st century, when you can buy the fourth edition. There has been a ton of advancement between 1994 and 2002.
This is a GREAT textbook.......2005-04-17
This book made studying and preparing for tests easy and enjoyable. Highly recommended, especially for those who are going to take the GRE Subject test. At later stages of your career, textbooks even the greatest ones will be largely irrelevant, as you will have to search for up-to-date articles and reviews.
A perfect introduction to the subject.......2002-01-04
I will say that I had no trouble in reading and understanding this book. All subjects are nicely elaborated and picturized with detailed schematics or with electron microscopy pictures. Scanning electron pictures are the best but very minimal. All basic concepts are covered structure of cell, protein synthesis, DANA , cell structures, nerve cells, atp, etc. You may want to skip better books when it comes to biochemistry or developmental biology but this book gives smooth introduction all subjects and than you make your direction. Compared to book written by Karp, I prefer this one for wider coverage but Karp has some sections called "experimental pathways" that open your vision to latest developments.
May be catagorised: "Antique".......2001-10-22
Ounce apon a time in the beginning of the 90's there was a great book: "Molecular Biology of the Cell". However, this very book missed the oppportunity to keep up with exponentiall growth of knowledge accumulated in this field. Indeed it lacks the fundamental information needed by every cell biology student and may only satisfy the needs of a AP biology class at High School.

Book Description
The unique feature of this book's first edition was the presentation of a unified approach to the molecular biology of prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The success of this approach, and its continuation, is the result of a long string of discoveries showing similarities in solutions to biological problems that often extend across many or even all species. A six-part organization covers genes, proteins, gene expression, DNA, the nucleus, and cells. For individuals in the science community interested in genetics.

Molecular biology can be easy to learn.......2007-02-13
I have been using Genes VIII for a year already in my Molecular Biology studies and I should state that this is one of the best books written in this field.
First of all, the material is structured in a clear manner. Moreover all terms are introduced starting from simple things, which become harder and harder as you proceed. That gives the student the opportunity to form the overall picture of molecular biological processes.
Besides, each chapter starts with the introduction that is very useful when you want to review the things (i.e. before the exam).
In my opinion this book contains a lot of visual material that definitely helps students to understand the material more thoroughly.
To sum up, I would recommend everybody who wants to explore the world of Molecular Biology to buy this book.
One of the best.......2006-04-29
This text is a vast improvement on the previous editions. Its improved vastly on both clarity and content. The figures themselves are excellent learning tools. Combined with uptodate material, it is in my opinion peerless. Its rivals would be lodish and alberts but in some areas complements them and often outshines them. The textbook exists online at ergito.com and you could subcribe for the duration of your course. The website gives you access to the complete material in the print text and you also save a ton of money by subscribing for a shorter period, that is if you find cash an issue. However, I wholeheartedly recommend the print edition as a trusted companion for those embarking on graduate studies.
A great book on biology.......2004-12-03
Dr. Lewin's work has helped me understand biology and improve my understanding of the sciences. The design and figures in Genes are wonderfully clear, as is the general body of the text.
Furthermore, his website at ergito.com has some great supplemental material on the important procedures of science and past experiments that have changed sciences.
Between the Genes book and the subscription to Ergito, Dr. Lewin's work is a great opportunity to learn and expand your knowledge. I thought Genes VIII was great, and a good step forward from Genes VII.

Book Description
This abridged version of the bestselling reference
Handbook of Stem Cells, Two-Volume Set attempts to incorporate all the essential subject matter of the original two-volume edition in a single volume. The material has been reworked in an accessible format suitable for students and general readers interested in following the latest advances in stem cells, including full color presentation throughout. Although some extra language and chapters have been deleted, rigorous effort has been made to retain from the original two-volume set the material pertinent to the understanding of this exciting area of biology.
The organization of the book remains largely unchanged, combining the prerequisites for a general understanding of adult and embryonic stem cells; the tools, methods, and experimental protocols needed to study and characterize stem cells and progenitor populations; as well as a presentation by the world's experts of what is currently known about each specific organ system.
* Full-color presentation througout
* Each chapter begins with 3-5 defined glossary terms, and all of the terms are collected in a comprehensive list within the book
* References have been eliminated - now there are about 10 bibliographic entries per chapter

Customer Reviews:
Good for class- too long for the Boards.......2007-04-01
If you are a starting MS1 this is a good book to use for class as it has alot of good detail condensed in an outline format. It comes with a CD that has been quite helpful. However, when it comes to the Boards is just too big of a book for a subject that is not high yield- think about it- this book is just as big as BRS Path. Do you really have that much time to read a low yield subject? No. So instead for Histo- I recommend using a smaller book to review for the boards: I recommed Road Maps: Histo as opposed to High Yield Histo.
Excellent book for histology class and USLME.......2003-06-21
I used this book and the following which is also on Amazon.com:
Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers.
The first book was written well and was quite helpful in preparing me for my histology exams in med school. Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (ISBN: 0971999686) was so on target with the kind of questions asked on my histology exams in med school. It also proved to be helpful for the histology portion of the USLME Step 1. It goes to show since I got excellent grades in my histology class and on my USLME. I gave my friends both of these books to study from for class exams and for the boards, and they all passed the first time. My advice is to get both books.
Must buy for USLME.......2003-06-12
I found the information in this book pretty on target for the topics that are needed for the histology portion USLME 1. This book is a very good reference because it helped me summarize the info better in a much shorter fashion than just going back to a long textbook. If you really want to know the type of questions asked on the USLME step 1, I highly recommend the following that is also on amazon. Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (ISBN: 0971999686) This two study guides are must buys. There are both worth the money.
Great reference for USLME step 1.......2003-06-10
This was a good review for the histology portion of the USLME Step 1. It has similar topics that were asked on in the test. ...
Super for the boards.......2001-10-04
I found this book to be really helpful. I know people who used some other books to prepare for histology and regretted it. The book is laid out in outline manner which makes finding information easy. The questions were just like the kinds I encountered on my Step I exam. I highly recommend this book.
