Who has the time?.......2007-09-22
I bought this book based on the 10 positive reviews it received. Unfortunately, my money would have been best spent on a Tony Buzan book. MAPPING INNER SPACE has serious downfalls. Mainly, all the mindmaps in the book are rich in color with excellent drawn pictures...how could I even attempt to duplicate this? Though the author states several times that drawing perfectly isn't required, her own examples demonstrate that her drawing skills are very superior. Also, the use of different colors made her mind maps frameable...how would have time during a meeting to draw such elaborate pictures? I would highly recommend that you buy one of Tony Buzan's earlier books on this subject...you won't feel so intimidated when you read them.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

A maze of seemingly useful clues.......2001-09-11
"Brain-Compatible Classrooms" is certainly a more catchy title than the earlier work "Patterns for Thinking, Patterns for Transfer" (1989) from which this book developed. The author has certainly done extensive reading in the field. Chapter 1 gives useful summaries of: the physiology and functioning of the brain, issues of nature vs. nurture, brain and mind, emotions, theories of the intellect, memory and learning. Chapter 2 defines the brain-compatible classrooms in terms of the Four-Corner Framework of teaching: for, of, with and about thinking. There are numerous charts, tabulations, graphic organizers, lists of skills and behaviors... Short of attending prolonged workshops, I'm afraid it is just impossible for most teachers to grasp the author's framework of mind and make sensible and good use of the material.
Entertainingly Shallow.......2000-07-26
I was disappointed with this book. It reads like a Chicken Soup for the Teacher's Soul. The pseudo-scientific approach leaves teachers relying with shaky confidence on out-of-context quotes to establish the important framework of classroom learning. It does offer a variety of stategy ideas, and good examples, but would have been more useful if it had been half the size and a third the price.

The book explores a variety of ideas that make it ideal for the classroom environment. It is being used by most of the teachers in the Calgary school board. The activities suggested by the author will challange the brains of most students, from the average to the gifted alike.

Useful With An Asterisk..........2005-11-10
But so are most books of this type. The book's best feature is a nice combination of detail with theory. There are lots of exercises and a generally cheery "you can do it!" tone. That's good, but the book's recurring emphasis on developing multi-modal approaches to problem-solving is better (i.e., creativity means trying approaches you're not as familiar with). Concluding sections on interacting with people of dominant types that differ from you, and how to sell your ideas to them, is probably worth the cover price alone.
The author loves examples. These examples are not always correct (salons peaked in the 1700s, not the "seventeenth century" to cite one of more than a dozen examples), nor do they fit as neatly into their creative categories as the author supposes. In part, though, the reader comes to see this as the unique characteristics of a certain creative style--seeing this and making allowance for it is good practice for the rest of the book. After all, true creativity is aware of variant creative modes, especially in colleagues or even competitors.
The morning after skimming the entire book I began to experiment with some of its suggestions. Within two hours I had come up with a metaphor that will solve one of the most intractable process problems for my company--an idea that literally took my breath away, on something I'd been struggling with for months. I put a lot of work in; this book didn't give me any answers. But in a sense it reminded me of the answer, or gave me ideas about how and where to look for the answer. I was a college football player already, to use a metaphor, and this was a long look at a pro playbook. It won't work unless you're playing college ball; if you're a top pro player, you should look at something more advanced. But if you want to develop a basis of creative talent, this'll help.
Interesting perspectives on creative thinking styles.......2003-12-27
This book starts off a quick précis of the 5 faces : Seer, Observer, Alchemist, Fool, Sage. Then it gives a self-assessment of which Styles you are currently using. I scored highest on Fool & Observer, and lowest on Sage.
As I read through the book, I was disillusioned as to its worth. But when I got to Fool, I thought "that's me exactly" (there's no shame in being a 'Fool' in this schema).
So I looked back at the earlier chapters, and thought maybe the questions & examples were not as appropriate as they might have been?
Anyway, I began to appreciate the book more. Certainly the latter sections on how to apply the 5 different styles at work, and the strengths & weaknesses of teams who find themselves with & without all these players, were of more use than the theorising.
There are other books offering rival schemas, but I think this one is as good as any of the others, and easier to read.

Visual Thinking is a book made for teachers who want to help their students use images and words to record ideas in a creative and memorable way. That is why I, as a middle school teacher, find it so appealing. The "symbolary" gives you hundreds of easy to draw images and there are many templates, too, that encourage visual thinking -- that is using visual metaphors to think through challenges, make plans and more. I think you will find many uses for this book! I certainly did.

In this excellent new handbook on mind-mapping as an instructional tool, the authors include how to create mindscapes, easy ways to learn drawing skills, how to create and use symbols, and how to create mindscape templates for developing higher order thinking skills, problem-solving, studying, and goal-setting. Even those who believe they have never been able to draw, will find it easy to develop this skill. "I was brought up believing that "I cant draw" and I was hesitant to get this book, but I am so glad that I did! Reading and practicing with "Visual Thinking," I began to feel more confident in my ability to teach others using "pictures" that are worth more than a thousand words! There are so many students these days who have difficulties with language and comprehension when only the written word is used, but who are able to comprehend and express themselves very clearly and in detail when using symbols. So many wonderful templates are provided in the book that students and teachers can use to teach, learn,record information and review. Mapping with symbols as suggested in this book allows us to see connections that we might otherwise overlook. It is a fun text, easy to use and well done in every way! Thanks to the authors!"

Quite disappointed by this new book & with the two authors!.......2005-09-14
I am quite disappointed by this new book & with the two authors, whose past work I am most familiar with. Having read (& reviewed with gusto!) the principal author's two earlier pieces of work i.e. Mapping InnerSpace, I find this book to be somewhat of a letdown.
It is natural that I would compare this book with `Mapping InnerSpace.' Much of the material in the new book has apparently been rehashed from the earlier work. The only new stuff I can find is the `symbolary' of easy-to-draw iconographs, which is now been re-organized from A to Z, & a handful of new `Mindscaping' application templates in the last chapter. That's it.
Surprisingly, the authors even continue to make use of the same Foreword, which goes back to the late 80's & which appeared in the first book.
I get this funny feeling that the new book has been based on perfunctory desk research & no attempt has been exerted to conduct some real field research to cover new developments or advancements. Worst of all, & sad to say, the material is still restricted to the authors' own limited field of work.
Based on my own exploration, the field of visual thinking has obviously made tremendous progress in the last few years, in both the educational & business arenas. A quick search & browse across the net will give readers a good appreciation of what has happened/is happening out there.
I actually expect the authors to provide a quick round-up (or snapshot) of developments & happenings with regard to new & exciting visual thinking applications across the educational as well as business realms. There have been abundant application variations as well as radical enhancements in the field of visual thinking for business professionals. I am well aware that field research is no easy task in the light of many proprietary methods, but with a little ingenuity & persistent legwork, it would have been rewarding for both authors to go the extra mile. The new book, taking into consideration the prevailing developments outside their own sphere, would have been great for all the readers, especially the professionals.
For examples, the creative work of heavy weights in the field of visual thinking as applied to business & industry, like Jim Channon (large system imagineering with Advanced Visual Language), David Sibbet (graphical visualisation of organisational change with template-based methodology) & Matt Taylor (creative augmentation, with artful integration of visual space technologies, collaborative environments, & knowledge-intensive work processes), to name a few, have not been captured &/or exemplified. Not even in the Resources page. I am also very intrigued as to why the innovative work of Christine Allen Ewy (Teaching with Visual Frameworks) & Elizabeth H Wig (Map It Out: Visual Tools for Thinking, Organizing & Communicating) is not even captured in the Resources. There are many others.
In today's technology-savvy world, there is no mention of using technology to augment one's visual thinking approach. The Mind-manager software quickly comes to mind. Xplanations is another innovative one. There are many others, too.
In these respects, the book does not stand up to its title, Visual Thinking: Tools for Mapping Your Ideas.
For the beginner, particularly a teacher or a parent or a student, who is currently looking for plain visual thinking approaches, this book still stands as great work. I would attribute this to the wonderful symbolary.
To sum up my review, I reluctantly rate this book a 3 in the light of my foregoing comments, although it deserves a 5 in terms of useful & practical learning for the beginner in the field of visual thinking.

In all my years of obsesive reading about the brain and its function, I have never found as simple, clear, current and practical an owners manual for the brain as this. Order it, it's a bargain you will end up recomending to others.

I highly recommend Ms. Sprenger's book. I want to invite her to speak at an education conference but am having difficultly locating her. I am the director of secondary school student teachers at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. I teach courses in Educational Psychology, Teaching and Classroom Management, and Middle School Philosophy. I have found this book to be very helpful in giving practical information about how the brain learns and retains information.

I had to read this book for a class at American Military University. I do not have time to write in detail like Gaetan Lion did but I completely agree with him. This book is so obvious that I'm surprised that anyone gets anything out of it. Insightful? Not in the least bit. No offence to the writer, she seems like a nice person, but other than assigning her titles to things I already knew I got nothing from the book. I recommended to the college that they remove this book from their curriculum. If you are attending APUS and must read it all I can say is at least it's a quick easy read and if you agree with my review to please let the college know in the end of course survey.
An excellent re-introduction to learning for students.......2006-09-25
I teach a college course that uses this book (it's a university-developed course that's required for all incoming students). The vast majority of my students get a great deal out of it. Many of them state that they wouldn't have picked up this book on their own, but that they are very glad to have read it. Most of my students are returning to school after absences of between two and twenty years. Some of them are instructors themselves (usually in the military), and start applying the techniques in the book to their own students (very successfully, I might add). It's a pleasure to be able to help people learn relatively simple tips to significantly improve their learning. One has to wonder how many of them might have been able to finish college straight out of high school had they been taught how they personally learn best. Unfortunately, most American schools don't seem to care what kind of learning style individual kids have. They just teach one way. If Conner's book were required reading for teachers, countless kids could benefit.

Learn More Now is a good book about learning, it helps you undestand how your brain works and how we can get the most of our personal learning style to improve our understanding and recalling skills.
I believe it main weakness is not to propouse a general map of how to engage into studing (some general steps to follow), instead it goes thru differents technics and explanations on how you learn and how to improve your comprehension. It does all this in a easy to read manner.
If you are beginning to try to get the most of your time and getting better grades, this is a useful book to read, but will have to manage yourself to give some structure to all the technics included.

Marcia Conner has done a terrific job pulling together and addressing a variety of concepts that affect how we learn. The book is not a hardcore, esoteric tome written to edify researchers; it is a most readable and enjoyable presentation of concepts for those who want to learn more about learning more. The exploration and explanation of various learning styles and types provides a gradual revelation of how your preferences and personality impact your learning. It makes for a fascinating journey of self discovery filled with "aha" moments. Marcia Conner is a bright, witty and insightful guide along the way.
Don't get me wrong, though. This book is not superficial or shallow. It provides pithy comments and suggestions that will expand your thinking and enhance your knowledge of learning in variety of contexts. You will come away with a better understanding of yourself and those around you. Then, whether in the role of a student, teacher or facilitator, you can make the adjustments needed so that you and others can Learn More Now.
More is Less........2004-04-29
This book is superficial and is more about enumerating countless dimensions vaguely associated with training than learning itself. The author mentions six different dimensions related to learning. Only one of them is meaningful: Learning Style [Visual, Audio, Kinesthetic]. The five others are trivial. However, by throwing so many dimensions at you that are not so relevant, she dilutes her message immensely. These six different dimensions actually result in 432 possible styles of learning. This is just absurd, and renders her whole learning framework unusable. She gets through this maze by only touching the surface of each dimension, and never addressing a specific learning type across more than one dimension at a time. For instance, using her language how would a Goal-oriented, Visual, Global, Space-Oriented, Small Group, Think to Talk learning style person best learn. How would such a specific learner best take notes, prepare for a test, learn a new discipline. You will never know because this is one of the 432 learning types you can come up with. She will just share vague recommendations about how a Visual learner learns, or a Goal-oriented learner learns. So, you get these disconnected and superficial pieces of information. And, it is up to you to connect the dots. Good luck.
The author gets wrong the one single relevant learning dimension she mentions. She subdivides Learning Style along three sensory subgroups, when it should be four. Kinesthetic and Tactile are two different subgroups. Also, the test she gives in the book is way too short, and vague to give an accurate assessment of your own Learning Style.
Occasionally, her writing style is really boring. In one chapter, she emphasizes the learning power of practicing. She then lists about 10 insights on the subject. But, they were all saying exactly the same thing that practice takes time and is important.
Fortunately, there is a much better book on this subject: "How to Learn Anything Quickly" by Ricki Linksman. This book is everything the other book is not. It is relevant, and effective. It tests your learning style along two effective axes: Learning Style (Visual, Audio, Kinesthetic, and Tactile), and Brain Dominance (Left-brain, Right-brain). Thus, the author's framework includes a very manageable eight different specific learning style. The author devotes an entire chapter on each of these styles. By reading the one relevant to you [i.e. Visual Left-Brain], you will learn a lot about how to better absorb information, acquire knowledge and expertise in any field, get ready for a test. The author gets into practical details such as what style of note-taking will work best for you, or what kind of writing or project outline will help you out. In other words, this book really teaches you how to learn; unlike "Learn More Now."
If you want to study this subject further, I recommend all the excellent books by Howard Gardner, and Tony Buzan. Gardner is the developer of the Multiple Intelligence Theory. Buzan is the inventor of the Mind Mapping technique, a really amazing and fun learning tool. Michael Gelb has also written excellent books on this subject, including "How to Think like Leonardo da Vinci."

Great book, with a lot of musical examples.......2007-06-22
This is a very well written and thought out book. It is not really an instructional text, but it could be used that way. Most of the book is easy to understand, except for a few technical things here and there that only trained musicians would understand. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to study Jazz in a musical way or people who just want to expand their understanding of music in gereral. This would make a great book to use at universities. The last section of the book contains actual musical examples of what is talked about in previous chapters, so if you can read music this is a great tool for musicians of all levels.

I'm new in the world of Jazz and Music Theory. This is a great book for anyone that is trying to learn the language of Jazz.
In its first part, I was thinking about buying another two copies to give to a Philosopher and a Rock and Brazilian Music Drummer that both are big Jazz listeners and collectors. The first part of the book is about the beginning of the Jazz training, and it has also great information about the American Black Community.
I gave up the idea because its impossible to talk about how to think in jazz without mentioning harmony, scales, chords and rhythm and to find out what he is talking about it's important to have some Music Theory notions.
But it is very easy to read (never boring), in spite of its great rigor. So I'm really delighted with it and I'm planning to read it again when my reading becomes better (half of it are examples written in notation) and theory knowledge becomes stronger.

Mr. Berliner reduces the Art of Jazz Improvistaion to nothing more than rote regurgitation of memorized licks and phrases. The True Nature of Jazz Improvisation is much more profound than his book describes. His work is perhaps usefull in understanding one small, peripheral aspect of Jazz Improvisation, but anyone who would like to seriously understand the Artform needs to take his point of with the understanding that is only a small fragment of what a musicians Mind, Body and Soul process to create truly spontaneous beauty, which is the Real and True Art of Jazz.
A Monumental Breakthrough in Jazz Studies ! ! ! ! ! ! !.......2001-10-22
The blurb on the back cover of this book has a slight understatement... It begins, "A landmark in jazz studies,"
Not since the advent of the long playing record and the publication of Leonard Feather's "Encyclopedia of Jazz" has anyone made such an enormous, substantive, light shedding contribution to Jazz (outside a recording studio.) This book is a must for everyone... and in fact, its divided into two parts... one which *is* for everyone, and goes into how musicians come up, hone their skills, learn to interact, develop and whatnot, and then the second half, which is more for musicians and features close to 400 pages of musical examples - - a text book in musical studies itself.
As a musician myself, I have long suspected that Jazz isn't just a bunch of patterns and scales. It is a culture, an attitude, an approach, and way of thinking... this book not only confirms it, but it substantively will take you into the mind of its foremost vetarans and practitioners. With its balance between information that's anecdotal as well as analytical, and Berliner's excellent writing style (despite the size of the book, he just draws you in the pages flow by one by one) - - this is must reading...
Almost a half a century ago Leonard Feather told us about the masters, now Berliner draws us into their minds. It is my hope that Jazz students (and fans) alike will begin taking up this book as they begin their journeys, and as a result, it invigorates and revitalizes the music as its never been before !
