Book Description
Research Methodology is not an inherently interesting topic. This book counteracts the natural tendency to shy away from research with an understandable, palatable, useful, and interesting, and above all, readable attempt to explain research methods.
Knowing proper research methodology comes from an understanding of basic statistical principles, research design, measurement, descriptive studies, and scientific writing. This book addresses each subject section by section to enhance conceptual learning rather than regurgitation of calculations.
For anyone who needs to learn proper research methodology in psychology, social work, teaching, or public relations.

Book Description
"As an introduction to facet theory, this book is good. . . . Many simple examples." --Publication of International Statistical Institute Through the use of detailed examples, the authors introduce readers to the use of facet theory as a method for integrating content design with data analysis. They show how facet theory provides a strategy for conceptualizing a study, for formulating the study's variables in terms of its purposes, for systematic sampling of the variables, and for formulating hypotheses. The book is organized into two parts. Part I introduces the reader to mapping with specific emphasis on mapping sentences, and Part II explores procedures for processing multivariate data. The book concludes with a discussion of the nature of scientific inquiry and the difference between a research question and observational questions. Introduction to Facet Theory will provide researchers with a useful technique for constructing questionnaires and for designing research instruments.

Book Description
Maleske's unique strategy is to embed statistical analysis in the context of research methods. This ''total process'' approach de-emphasizes computation, concentrating on teaching concepts to equip students for the decision-making processes. Because few students find statistics intrinsically interesting, Maleske stresses fundamental rather than complex statistical formulas, which he has found helps students recognize the relevance of statistics to their everyday lives. He looks at context over procedures to help students determine which analysis to use for a given situation and to explain the results of the analysis simply. Maleske uses a decision tree flowchart to introduce the reasons for and the process of gathering and interpreting data beyond individual statistical analysis and computation. After more than 17 years teaching statistics and class-testing this text, Maleske presents a logical, thoughtful, guidance-oriented book that is bound to appeal to the ''new generation'' of statistics professors, and to others looking for a change.

Customer Reviews:
Internet research starts here.......2001-06-30
This easy-to-read book gives readers step-by-step directions on how to create Web pages and on-line surveys. Furthermore, it guides readers through the process of posting psychological experiments on the Internet. The best part is that prior programming experience is not necessary!
Before reading this book, I thought Web-page creation was reserved for the computer savvy, which I am not. However, by the time I got to Chapter 5 (chapters are very short, by the way), I had created a colorful Web page, which included graphics, links, and tables. By the end of the book, I had learned how to create on-line questionnaires and how to write some basic JavaScript, which I used to create an on-line experiment.
The book is complimented by a CD-ROM that contains examples for each chapter and links to HTML and JavaScript tutorials, downloadable software, psychological experiments, graphics, and more. Overall, this book is a valuable resource for students, teachers, and professionals interested in learning the "basics" of Web-page development and conducting psychological research on the Internet.

Book Description
This book provides comprehensive coverage so that it can be used in a single- or two-course sequence in statistics. It provides greater flexibility because it contains many topics not dealt with in other introductory texts. Its conceptual, intuitive approach allows for concepts to be easily stated and related to real-life examples. Throughout the text the author demonstrates how many statistical concepts can be related to one another. Unlike other texts, this book includes the following topics:
* skewness and kurtosis measures;
* inferences about two dependent proportions and two independent means with unequal variances;
* homogeneity of variance tests;
* layout of the data in ANOVA models;
* the ANOVA linear model;
* a wide variety of multiple comparison procedures;
* significance tests in multiple linear regression; and
* extensive discussion of assumptions and how to deal with assumption violations.
Numerous tables and figures help illustrate concepts and present examples within the text. An extensive bibliography is included. A number of pedagogical devices are included to increase the reader's conceptual understanding of statistics: chapter outlines; list of key concepts for each chapter; chapter objectives; numerous realistic examples; summary tables of statistical assumptions; extensive references; and end of chapter conceptual and computational problems.
An
instructor's manual is available containing answers to all of the problems, as well as a collection of statistical humor designed to be an instructional aid.
This book is intended for introductory statistics courses for students in education and behavioral sciences.
Customer Reviews:
Do your students a favor..........2005-02-20
A good text should allow the student to learn without intense reinstruction from the professor. This book fails miserably at achieving such a result. So do your students a favor, choose another text unless you are interested in delivering vigorous (re)explanations of concepts supposedly laid out within this piece of trash.

Book Description
This introductory behavioral statistics text focuses on helping students develop an understanding of the theories and principles behind inferential statistics without stressing the mathematics behind those principles. Each new concept is introduced in the context of real-life research situations. This very readable text was written for students with limited mathematics backgrounds and helps them develop the skills needed to interpret data. The author explains concepts simply, usually relying on prose rather than a series of mathematical formulas. The author describes his approach as being relatively heavy on theory and relatively light on mathematics. Mathematical formulas are introduced only when they are necessary. Theories are presented in ways that are accessible, as Tropper appeals to students' intuition and reasoning. Word problems and numerical examples are provided in abundance to give students plenty of opportunities for practice.

Lockhart did not make it seem like an intro text........1999-03-17
Lockhart is a wonderful researcher, but he may have forgot how to organize content so that introductory students can follow his words. I would not recommend this book for intr classes.
Introductory!? This is not an introductory book!.......1999-03-11
The book goes over the basic model building method of data analysis, but lacks the simplicity needed for an introductory course. The syntax and grammer was inappropriate for introductory level students. Use Sprinthall...that is an introductory text.
