Group therapy made easy.......2007-09-17
Easy to read and follow. A great resource for learning the first time or needing a refresher
group process text .......2007-08-07
This book is a must in the field of counseling. Clear, thorough, and concise. Also, Amazon shipped so quickly I had it before many in my class who had ordered from different vendors.
Organized, thorough textbook for group therapy.......2006-08-01
Marianne and Gerald Corey have written a well-organized text. The information was provided in a logical order and in an easy-to-read format. It covers group process as well as basic practical advice for the group leader - how to form a group, screen clients, where to meet, how long the meetings should last, etc. The group therapy taught in its pages is based on a thinking, feeling, and behaving model that can be integrated into group practice with other theoretical orientations.
This book was used in a masters counseling class on groups, and half our class was based on our own experiential group. The sections on the different stages of a group were particularly pertinent as it mimicked our experience. My only complaint with this text is that in the final four chapters, there were perhaps too many group proposals. I tired of reading all of them but that could have been end-of-semester inertia.
Great Book.......2006-07-14
The book was great and helped me understand the porcess but my professor was also great. Great professor and great book=knowledge!!!!!!!!!
Groups: Process and Practice.......2005-09-30
It was in good shape, but it took along time to get to my home.

Customer Reviews:
Could Have Been Better.......2007-08-24
I was disappointed with this text. The authors repeat the same themes numerous times with little original insight. It seems to me that they are more interested in perpetuating stereotypes then providing students with any educating information.
I would give it no stars but...........2007-07-15
This book is the worst textbook I have yet come across in my education as of yet. The authors repeat the same theme many times before they move on. Many of the chapters could have been shorter. I felt as if the authors had in mind to write a book for complete morons!
Besides for the idiotic writing, what's up with all of the racist rhetoric?!? The authors are clearly racist towards the "white folk", as they label white people. Every example of racism or underserved minorities, or anything of the like are overtly blamed on the "white folk". Just leave it out and teach us how to provide services for minorities! The authors make it sound as if every white male in this country is a racist and sexist bigot, who also hates disabled individuals. I can go on and on, but I will stop here.
Then finally, there is the very unprofessional bashing of other scholarly works, such as the Bell Curve, and others. Absolutely childish and uncalled for.
If you can get away without purchasing this textbook, do so! It is a waste of money.
good overview of difficult subject.......2007-04-28
Many of the reviewers have found offense with this book. This, unfortunately, illustrates the difficulty that many people have with discussing issues of race in a way that forces them to examine their own biases and assumptions. The book, "Why Are All The Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?" : A Psychologist Explains the Development of Racial Identity" by Beverly Tatum, also gives a great introduction to the major difficulties that some people have in identifying the role of power and privilege in their lives, and how we are taught in this country to be hypersensitive of exploring issues of race and privilege to the point that many people avoid the subject altogether, assume a 'colorblind' ideology, or take it as a personal attack. It is important to keep in mind that these assumptions and biases (and we ALL have them, myself included!) are largely unconscious, have been demonstrated through LOTS and LOTS of social psychological research to be present, even though we don't mean them to be; and are no one's 'fault' but are a product both of our brain's tendency to use cognitive 'short-cuts' to classify people, and of our society and the existing power inequalities. As a researcher and educator in the field, I found this book to be helpful in that it touches up many of the issues and difficulties that both practitioners and researchers face in doing cross-cultural work, and it does so in a way that is reflective of the state of the science in the psychological reserach.
Insidious and Dangerous.......2007-04-15
This text is required for a course in Cross Cultural Counseling for a Masters Program at NYU. I find it deeply disturbing that a book filled with stereotypes of all races, ethnicities and cultures is being used to allegedly foster a deeper consideration of culture in counseling situations. The only positive thing I can say is that it is equally offensive to everyone - no race or culture is spared. The "culturally incompetent white counselor", the "powerless" african american, the "family-oriented (and always late) Puerto Rican, the "confused" multiracial, the "collectivist" Asian American... the list goes on and on. Many of the studies cited are dated, while others are recitations of other work done by - you guessed it - Sue and Sue. I urge anyone who is required to use this textbook to challenge their professors - it may lead to some productive dialogue about race, ethnicity, culture and counseling. Otherwise, this text is an insulting waste of time.
They tell it like it is..........2007-03-06
Sue and Sue gave words to things I have felt and observed but couldn't describe. However, the problem was not racism itself - it was how I was reacting to it. I learned in this book that people of color go through stages of a healthy racial development. Once I recognized that, I knew I was fine and so will you! Racism is not any individual's fault - "white" folks are just as much a victim to this malady of society. And I have to say that it is getting better and better all the time. Allelujah! :-)
Book Description
This revision of Gerald Corey's best-selling text introduces students to the major theories of counseling (psychoanalytic, Adlerian, existential, person-centered, Gestalt, reality, behavior, cognitive-behavior, family systems, feminist and, NEW to this edition, postmodern approaches) and demonstrates how each theory can be applied to a single case ("Stan"). Reviewed by 27 of the field's leading experts, Corey's Seventh Edition covers the major concepts of counseling theories, shows students how to apply those theories in practice, and helps them learn to integrate the theories into an individualized counseling style. Incorporating the thinking, feeling, and behaving dimensions of human experience, Corey offers an easy-to-understand text that helps students compare and contrast the therapeutic models. This book is the center of a suite of products that include a revised student manual, a revised casebook, a companion text, and an all-new CD-ROM.

Happy Graduate Student.......2007-09-08
Very fast shipper. The book is in excellent condition, very reasonable priced compared to the college book store.
excellent summary.......2007-08-12
This text provides a concise summary of a variety of counselling theories and practices. A very valuable asset is the comparison table which allows the reader to see how the theoretical approaches approach psychotherapy, as well as who the pioneers of each theory are.
Great product, Great service, Great price!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-07
New, clean, and without wrinkled or highlighted pages. No ink or pencil marks and no ripped pages. Great price, fast shipping.
very easy to follow.......2007-02-27
this book is very well organized, easy to understand and gives a great overview in chapter 15 of each model. highly recommended for beginning therapists and as a reference for not-so-beginning therapists.
"A well written overview of the counseling therapies available in todays market ." .......2007-02-17
If you are not a student of psychology, you will still enjoy this book. It is an excellent read for anyone who desires to learn about the most popular and effective counseling therapies available in today's psychotherapy market. If you are considering counseling, this book will give you a clear and concise description of the most popular and effective therapies currently being used and taught; and will help you to decide which one best fits your personality. It is written by Dr. Gerald Corey, Professor Emeritus at Cal State Fullerton University. Dr. Corey is one of the foremost authorities in literature aimed at educational psychology. An excellent general reference book.

Great resource!.......2007-09-20
This planner is very helpful in the development of a treatment. Also helpful to beginning counselors.
Not All That.......2007-07-16
This book is very basic for treatment planning. I thought it would provide a lot more detail than it does. You can just as much out of the DSM-IV or just by using CBT. I would not recommend this to someone looking for than a basic understanding of treatment planning. I was very disappointed.
Very helpful.......2007-07-13
This planner is really helpful and helps to also breakdown the different adult diagnoses in the DSM. I really recommend it of you're going tobe diagnsing clients!!
Solid guide for counseling.......2007-05-23
The Complete Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner is an excellent help to the counselor. After a quick check of the behavioral definitions for verification, one can then find appropriate therapeutic interventions to put in one's toolbox for use if needed. Another important application for this planner is in writing treatment plans that insurance companies and other payors will accept. This is a mainstay of my office library.
Good Buy!.......2007-05-16
This book has been very helpful as a "tool" in obtaining ideas and further insight on how to develope effective treatment plans. I think the price also makes it an appealing buy.
Book Description
The authors of this book show how to find value in understanding people's pain and resilience in the context of their internal dynamic struggles, biological make-up, and social realities. They demonstrate how to use this knowledge to create a language of meaning for people's difficulties, and most important, a road to their healing. Inside Out and Outside In provides a guide for understanding and working with the complex inner and outer forces that make up people's lives. A Jason Aronson Book
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-04-11
A beautifully written book examining mental illness from a wide range of psychodynamic thoeries. It is a book I know I'll refer back to for years to come. The writers present the complexities of mental illness in a detailed and accessable manner. If you work in the mental health field as a psychiatrist, psychologist, counselor, or social worker this book is a must for your library.
A Truly Superlative Work.......2006-10-27
After a concise introduction, the authors describe in detail Drive Theory, Structural Theory, Ego Psychology, Psychosocial Ego Development, Object Relations Theory, The Theory of Self Psychology, and the Interpersonal School. This provides a solid foundation for the rest of the book, which moves to a chapter on Race and Culture, then Women. After this, a variety of psychopathologies are described in detail, with great attention to how ethnicity, culture, and gender play a role in the therapeutic process. The book contains a variety of clinical vignettes, is written intelligently, but without too much jargon, and is laid out concisely and clearly. I'm incredibly excited about this book, and know that I will be referring to it for a long time.
Good introduction to biopsychosocial assessment.......1998-10-22
The authors all teach at the Smith College School for Social Work, and this book developed from their lectures on biopsychosocial theories of development. Their students report that of all the books purchased during their graduate career, this is the one they refer back to most often. Well-chosen cases illuminate the theories, and issues of culture and gender are nicely integrated.

Fabulous.......2007-05-12
This is a very informative, helpful book when you are writing treatment plans and need ideas. I am a school based therapist and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone.
Helpful treatment planner but doesn't cover enough topics........2007-01-12
I needed a treatment planner to help me write treatment plans faster and more effectively. This book is helpful, but it does not exactly give you measurable goals that you need for treatment plans today. Certain areas are not listed in this book, and some particular goals suggested by this book are inappropriate to place on a treatment plan that is being looked at by an insurance company, and unfortunately therapists working in non-private practise have to follow particular rules for treatment planning. All in all, the book is somewhat helpful, but not exactly what I needed to help me with my job for a community based out-patient center.
Adolescent Treatment Planner.......2006-11-05
The book was exactly what I wanted. I work with kids ages 5-18 and needed a book that would help me write treatment plans. I will eventually order the Child Treatment Planner. On advise of friends, I ordered this one as it would be easier to adjust the goals to younger ages than to try to adjust the child planner to older kids.
Helpful guide.......2006-11-03
This treatment planner is a good guide for writing up treatment plans for some of the most commonly diagnosed disorders for adolescents.
surface but instructive.......2002-02-26
I had great hopes for this book. After I glanced at it, I purchased it immediately. It certainly does reorient you to the distinctions between goals, objectives and diagnoses, but after using it for a while, it just wasn't sufficient for those more complicated kids. I'll keep referring to it, not so much for information but to place me back on course when I'm stuck and blocked- (happens more than I'd like, when the stress gets to me,) yet I still would suggest, for more seasoned professionals, a higher level of diagnostic and prescriptive content.
If you are one of those good therapists who flounder when it comes to documentation; I'd say, "Go for it." But, if you're looking for a book to help with establishing a quality diagnosis and treatment plan for those true stumpers- sorry, this isn't the book.

Customer Reviews:
Yalom- before he was an author.......2007-08-26
This book was a required reading for one of my classes at school. I am familiar with Yalom's work after he became an author of more popular literature (The Gift of Therapy, Love's Executioner, etc.) so I was half expecting this book to be written in the same style. It is written like a text book. At times, you can see Yalom's personality coming through, but most of it is dry and rather unemotional. However, this book is still edifying and (while not entertaining) easily read.
The "master" speaks to grasshopper..........2006-08-02
Yalom has vast knowledge and experience with group therapy, and in this book he imparts it to neophyte counselors in a logical and detailed format. He carefully explains the therapeutic value of a group, the factors necessary to facilitate change, and the role of the therapist. He emphasizes the here-and-now focus, and how group members create a social microcosm of their life within the therapy group. Yalom advises on practical matters, like the selection of clients and the creation of the group. He then carefully explores the stages that groups move through, and some problem members that one could encounter.
The drawbacks of this volume include the length - it is excessively long (they could cut chapter 9) due to the verbosity of the author. I had to look up several words and phrases that I was unfamiliar with, and I have to admit, some pages bored me. Nevertheless, for a text, this is a great book. I read every page, to the end, even the unassigned chapters. I'll keep this in my library for reference, and I hope to be able to refer to it repeatedly.
The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy.......2006-03-15
This is an excellent book for group counseling practice. It provides lots of cases with comments and reflections.
the Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy.......2006-02-19
A comprehensive text that is easy to read and comprehend.Very helpful for anyone planning to lead a group in therapy.
It's Yalom--Enough Said!.......2005-09-25
he's done it again...yalom has an amazing insight into human nature and the healing components of therapy of any modality. to fully appreciate this book, as well as his other works, you have to at least be okay with the notions of existentialism, as his conceptualization and methodologies are built on the basic premises of this theory. i have shared his works with intelligent and particularly introspective patients, and they really seem to relate to his notions. thinking outside the box is important to appreciating yalom, in my opinion, as he does not subscribe to standard cognitive-behavioral or psychodynamic notions. these are very important and useful approaches, but existentialism is a horse of a different color and encourages patients to consider themselves and the lives they are living in a different way. this book takes these important concepts and applies them to group therapy in a very practical way.

love this book!.......2007-09-22
I have trully enjoyed using this book in my practice. It is true that the objectives dont come as specific and measurable as some would want to, but i think it is better that way because i can adjust them to be appropriate for each client. All u need is creativity. I recommend this book to those who would want to facilitate writing their CCCP's for LA County DMH paperwork. I'm sure it would be good for other types of paperwork.

I was fortunate enough to take my group counseling class from Dr. Corey himself at Cal State Fullerton. The experience of learning from and being coached by Dr. Corey was amazing, and allowed even further insight into this text. The formula of the book is easy to follow. Individual theories are covered as well as lessons on the group process itself. A must read for anyone training to be a counselor!
Excellant Group Counseling Book.......2003-10-30
I am using this book in a graduate level group counseling class. I have found it to be very useful. It gives you an excellant overview of the various theories and how they can be utilized within group counseling. The Corey's have also produced a video tape of a group counseling session that also provides so valuable information.
Book Description
This new edition of the classic psychodynamic psychiatry text Psychodynamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice continues its tradition as the most readable, scholarly, and practical introduction to psychodynamic theory and practice available. Kept within arm's reach of all mental health professionals, this invaluable "one-stop" reference will prepare you to teach students and treat patients more effectively with its truly integrative psychodynamic approach.
The author has meticulously updated every chapter of the previous edition, adding new illustrative case examples and discussing the most recent research findings and concepts in psychodynamic psychiatry. It introduces the basic principles of psychodynamic psychiatry and the four fundamental theoretical frameworks derived from psychoanalytic theory: ego psychology, object relations theory, self psychology, and attachment theory. Drawing on the latest breakthroughs in neuroscience to validate the latest psychodynamic thinking, the author includes neuroanatomical illustrations that highlight the need to integrate psychoanalytic theories of development with brain development and the impact of environment on gene expression.
The eminently practical Psychodynamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice is organized into three distinct sections based on DSM-IV diagnoses:
- Section I, Basic Principles and Treatment Approaches in Dynamic Psychiatry, begins by laying a foundation in psychoanalytic theory. It focuses on how to apply psychoanalytic theory to specific types of evaluation and treatment, including psychodynamic assessment, brief therapy, individual and group psychotherapy, family and marital therapy, pharmacotherapy, and hospital/partial hospital treatment.
- Section II, Dynamic Approaches to Axis I Disorders, covers the major psychiatric disorders and discusses how to apply psychodynamic understanding to the treatment of patients with these disorders.
- Section III, Dynamic Approaches to Axis II Disorders, provides a psychodynamic understanding of personality disorders and covers in detail the principles of psychodynamic psychotherapy for these conditions.
The fourth edition of Psychodynamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice details the theory of psychodynamic psychotherapy and the adaptation of psychodynamic thinking to specific disorders. As such, it is an ideal companion to Dr. Gabbard's Long-Term Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: A Basic Text, which details the techniques of dynamic psychotherapy.
The bestselling Psychodynamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice is the definitive reference for training programs of all kinds at all levels. This new edition provides a clear synthesis of diagnostic understanding and treatment unmatched in the literature. Marked by Dr. Gabbard's distinctly lucid and compelling prose, it is the ultimate psychiatric guide for the busy clinician and mental health student.
Customer Reviews:
getting tired.......2007-07-11
this is a very good text. well written and useful. i'm just getting a little tired of paying a hundred bucks a pop for books that start to fall apart soon after i get them. in the case of the gabbard book, the binding holding the pages together was truly cheap and coming apart. just cheap production. this makes me really angry. i'm less concerned if the sideboards are on the less than totally solid and reliable side of production but don't produce a book and charge a hundred bucks for it and have the binding start to split at the first reading. really insulting to the buyer and the author. i'm sure apa could afford to forgo an additional ten cents per book and actually have their contracted book manufacturer use glue in the binding.
this is a good book for psychiatrist........2007-01-26
i think as a psychiatrist using dynamic perspective to understand patient is very important. this is a good book for clinic work.
Practical emphasis on empirical validation.......2006-08-12
I teach those evil, mean behavioral and cognitive courses that all of you hate. Bwaaahahahahaaaaah. Even so...
Add me to the list of people who heartily endorse this new edition of a classic. I use it as a teaching tool and as a reference, and clinical psychology students generally rave about it. A book like this one is essential at a time when psychodynamic approaches are fighting for their proverbial lives. It keeps pace with the DSM-IV-TR, and with rapid advances in neuroscience and clinical research. As before, it is enormously practical. It continues to provide clinical examples, insight, and wisdom related to each DSM diagnosis. As before, its style is accessible to students and clinicians alike, including those who are not psychodynamically oriented. If I was teaching an introductory course on psychdynamic psychology, this is the text I would use.
Gabbard's book contains the following: (1) A lucid introduction to the foundations of dynamic psychiatry. Topics covered include the patient's subjective experience, the role of the unconscious, psychic determinism, expression of the past in the present, resistance, and the role of neurobiology; (2) An introduction to theory, including ego psychology, object relations theory, self psychology, and attachment theory; (3) A multi-chapter discussion of clinical assessment and treatment, including sections on psychodynamic considerations of medication and hospitalization; (4) Coverage of Axis I disorders (schizophrenia, affective disorders, anxiety disorders, dissociative disorders, sexual dysfunctions, substance-related disorders and eating disorders, and cognitive disorders); (5) Coverage of Axis II disorders, with emphasis on the cluster B This is disorders. There are separate chapters for borderline, narcissistic, antisocial, and hysterical-histrionic disorders. The clinical chapters begin by discussing presentation as it relates to the 4 major dynamic schools, and then discuss assessment, and management. In this new edition, relevant biological research is integrated into the discussion. My kind of book: it takes old-time theories, case studies, and new research, and integrates them in a way that enhances clinical practice.
Excellent reference book.......2006-03-26
Glen Gabbard does an excellent job making this difficult subject easier to understand from the psychoanalytic point of view. I typically find reading information about diagnoses dry and fairly meaningless. Gabbard is able to keep my attention and help me to understand a person's character structure from a less medical-model point of view.
Gabbard has done his homework!.......2005-09-25
this is a wonderful book. it is well-organized and puts the often elusive concept of psychodynamic theory into real, practical considerations and methods. it includes basic principles, information on defense mechanisms (very useful), and a great deal of information on various psychodynamic theoretical perspectives. the chapters on understanding and treating personality disorders were my favorite, and the author spent a great deal of time on cluster b personality disorders, probably the most often seen and difficult to treat of the personality disorders. i particularly liked the chapter on borderline personality disorder. throughout the book, the theory and concepts are easy to read and understand, and the interventions are practical and well-explained.
