3 out of 5 stars Worth the read, a little too fluffed........2006-12-16

Aside from a minor time inaccuracy (within the first couple pages) the author's diary approach seemed a bit unauthentic. Perhaps I am too far removed from being so young, but even as the book moves on I wonder if I teen would really write so... young-like? Rather than wanting to cry "Eat! Eat!" by the end, I wanted to cry "Mature! Mature!" Getting past these things I did enjoy reading the book. As with many of these books she just seems to fall into her disorder, and it is obvious here.

I liked it.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing........2006-05-15

Morgan Menzie's Diary of an anorexic girl is truly amazing and heartfelt. It is by far one of the best diaries that i have ever read. It goes deep into Blythes descent into Anorexia and to her recovery. I used to anorexic, so this truly touched me. Though it may be triggering to someone who is still battling an ED it is worth the Read.

5 out of 5 stars Talk About Real!!!.......2006-04-22

Morgan Menzie's book was the first diary of an eating disorder I read, and is the reason why I continue to read more ED books. She unlike many ED authors talked about things other that just her eating disorder, such as relationships with friends, family and boyfriends. It's not a book that's all about anorexia but does emphasize more so than other subjects in her diary.

In her book, I believe she cover about mmm... three or four years, I really can't remember. Anyway it's a long period of time. One thing that she does that annoys the heck out of me is that she'll skip a whole month of entries but I guess that's the author's way of cutting out insignificant things.

Basically a girl named Blythe, which I think maybe be her middle name, becomes anorexic in middle school because of a friend. On of her friends begins to loose weight and Blythe decides she wants to loose to. But it goes beyond loosing weight it becomes a desire for thinness, and a fear of food.

Another thing I love about this book is Morgan keeps it so real. She said one of the- the truest thing EVER published about our human ways. It's on page 49 and is the...um... 4th paragraph I believe since the book is copy written I don't want to post it without permission. But what she says in that paragraph is so overwhelmingly true that I had to put down the book and think about my life. Although what she says is completely irrelevant to her eating disorder I couldn't write this review without reference to that paragraph.

Would I recommend it? Heck yeah! To anyone, even if you're not anorexic or never have been, even if you think the disease is stupid, anyone should get this book. Recoverees, havebeens, thinking about its and neverwillbees, get the book. You'll understand what it's like to have the disease for this one girl and may have a whole new outlook on anorexia.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever Written.......2006-03-31

This book was probably the best book that I ever read. I absolutely loved it. I couldn't put it down. When Blythe would be so close in getting a boyfriend and then fly off the handle it would get me worked up, and it made me want to tell her "Calm down. Do you know what you doing?" I would get happy for her when she was so close to a boyfriend and something to bring happiness into her life, and then she would do something crazy and destroy all my hopes of her being happy. I couldn't believe that Becca was so stupid and didn't realize that she wasn't getting better. I can't believe that she just believed the food charts that Blythe did, even though she hadn't gained any weight or looked any diifferent. I was like "How stupid can you be lady!" This book really gets you involed and it made me wonder how people can be anorexic, but the problem is not their eating it is caused by something else. Once you figure out that problem and get it solved it will be easier to get yourself back on track and keep you regular.

4 out of 5 stars Get a bang for your buck.......2006-01-31

I bought this book as a recovering anorexic and I must say it really hit a part in me that hasnt been touched in awhile.
It really shows what anorexics go through, how triggers can become something that leads a person back into a disordered eating pattern and what can lead to recovery.
Short book, but I definatly reccomend reading it.

Book Description

This classic in the literature of child violence and antisocial behavior has been updated to include coverage of the most recent and important school safety, prevention, and universal intervention programs. ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOR IN SCHOOL has often been commended for its comprehensive coverage of the nature, origins, and causes of antisocial behavior as well its consistent focus on the best practices, interventions, and model programs for preventing and remediating this most destructive of behavior disorders. The authors' practical focus is reinforced by the inclusion of many useful tools for professionals including worksheets, guidelines, assessment instruments, and a full chapter of case studies built around best practices for working with antisocial people.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Can be more concise........2007-09-22

In general, this is a fine book. It discussed the risks factors of developing antisocial behaviors. It also gives some ideas on the principles and best-practices of preventing or intervening antisocial behaviors. It is an academic textbook with lots of theory and data so is a good reference book for teachers. On the other hand, I feel the same messages are repeated over and over again, with different twists, that the best way to advert antisocial behaviors are two: (1) early prevention, and (2) comprehensive (meaning to involve as many people as possible.) I think the book can be shorter and perhaps less expensive.

5 out of 5 stars Antisocial Behavior in School: Strategies and Best Practice.......2000-07-19

Awesome Book! Useful, practical and research based ideas for all educators. It doesn't present short term "magic cures," however those really never work anyway. Instead the focus is on long term solutions for prevention & intervention with these tough kids. A must for your professional library (however, start saving those pennies, it is a little pricey).

Book Description

In 1984, this groundbreaking book presented a chilling profile of the criminal mind that shattered long-held myths about the sources of and cures for crime. Now, with the benefit of twenty years' worth of additional knowledge and insight, Stanton Samenow offers a completely updated edition of his classic work, including fresh perceptions into crimes in the spotlight today, from stalking and domestic violence to white-collar crime and political terrorism.

Dr. Samenow's three decades of working with criminals have reaffirmed his argument that factors such as poverty, divorce, and media violence do not cause criminality. Rather, as Samenow documents here, all criminals share a particular mind-set--often evident in childhood--that is disturbingly different from that of a responsible citizen.

While new types of crime have grown more prevalent, or at least more visible to the public eye--from spousal abuse to school shootings--little has changed in terms of our approach to dealing with crime. Rehabilitation programs based on the assumption that society is more to blame for crime than the criminal, an assumption for which a causal link has yet to be established, have proved to be grossly inadequate. Crime continues to invade every aspect of our lives, criminal court dockets and prisons are oppressively overcrowded and expensive, and recidivism rates continue to escalate.

To embark on a truly corrective program, we must begin with the clear understanding that the criminal chooses crime; he chooses to reject society long before society rejects him. The criminal values people only to the extent that he can use them for his own self-serving ends; he does not justify his actions to himself. Only by "habilitating" the criminal, so that he sees himself realistically and develops responsible patterns of thought, can we change his behavior.

It is vital that we know who the criminal is and how and why he acts differently from responsible citizens. From that understanding can come reasonable, compassionate, and effective solutions.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting book with some very good concepts.......2007-08-05

Love it or hate it, Dr. Samenow hits it on the head when he says that someone with a criminal mindset must learn to accept responsibility for their own actions or they will never be able to lead a truly productive and crime-free life.
I also think that he has it right when he says that criminals, or anyone for that matter, are constantly doing a balancing test. We each do a risk/benefit analysis for our decisions, no matter how small that decision may seem. What makes someone a criminal, is the fact that they make decisions that manipulate and/or harm others for their own benefit. While this is something that everyone does from time to time, criminals seem to do it constantly.
No matter what brought them to this pattern of decision making (poverty, genetics, a lust for excitement, etc.), the way to reverse it is to make them realize that they are responsible to change that pattern.

5 out of 5 stars A lump of Immalleable Clay.......2007-05-15

Was the despicable criminal and murder spree on April 16, 2007 at Virginia Tech University by Seung-Hui-Cho because of his gender, race, parental upbringing, psychotic inclinations, or simply by the acts against him by those around him?

None of the above, inclusive and or exclusive of either one of the purported reasons, if you read the theories and analytical presentations author Stanton E. Samenow, Ph.D., enumerates in his book titled "Inside the Criminal Mind."

According to the author, it is a misconception the person inclined to be a criminal is because of his or her parental upbringing, poverty, influential friends, mother, father, family and neighborhood. In his book, "Inside the Criminal Mind," the author states, "Criminals cause crime - not bad neighborhoods, inadequate parents, television, schools, or unemployment. Crime resides in the minds of human beings and is not caused by social conditions."

The author also discounts the theory of a psychotic mind, "...psychological theory, in its current state, is more misleading than illuminating in explaining why people become criminals. Far from being a formless lump of clay, the criminal shapes others more than they do him."

"...criminals come from a wide variety of backgrounds - from the inner city, suburbia, rural areas and small towns and from many religious, racial or ethnic groups. They may grow up in closely knit families, broken homes, or orphanages. They may be grade school dropouts or college graduates, unemployed drifters or corporate executives. In most cases, they have brothers, sisters, and next-door neighbors who grew up under similar circumstances but did not become criminals."
Thus the gestalt of "Inside the Criminal Mind," sets out to show criminals know right from wrong and the criminal is not the product of external sources. Criminal behavior is the product of the individuals' way of thinking.

The author Samenow says, "I shall expose the myths about why criminals commit crimes. I shall draw a picture for you of the personality of the criminal just as the police artist draws a picture of his face from a description. I shall describe how criminals think, how they defend their crimes to others, and how they exploit programs that are developed to help them. I shall discuss what these people are like as children for, with systematic study; it is possible to identify at least some children who are predisposed to criminality."

Looking back and thinking of the video Seung-Hui Cho made which was televised to the world, he did exactly what author Samenow illustrates in his book which was publish way before Seung-Hui Cho came into being. The criminal never takes responsibility for his acts and blames everyone and everything for his shortcomings and worse yet, for his criminal mind. Those of us who saw the video and were not aware how the criminal and his mind thinks, felt a sense of guilt and culpability for the despicable crimes he committed. However, we did not mold him to be or do what he did, but he molded us to think we were the ones responsible for his morally reprehensible and wretched act.

I strongly recommend "Inside the Criminal Mind." Everyone, parents, teachers, administrators, people at large should read it to better understand the mind of a criminal.

1 out of 5 stars Inside The Self-Serving Mind.......2007-05-13

This book is facile and superficial. It reveals very little about the criminal mind while exposing much about "the pyschology industry".

1 out of 5 stars Samenow's View of ADHD.......2007-05-12

Dr. Samenow's view of persons challenged by ADHD on pages 57 and 58 are not only absolutely incorrect, but Dr. Samenow contradicts himself in his reportage of "Andy". Dr. Samenow's completely inaccurate assessment of ADHD evidences a total lack of voluminous available research and I strongly encourage anyone interested in ADHD read Harvard University Psychiatrist's Edward Hallowell and John Ratey's books on ADHD, "Driven to Distraction" (1995) and "Delivered from Distraction" (2005)Driven To Distraction : Recognizing and Coping with Attention Deficit Disorder from Childhood Through Adulthood Delivered from Distraction: Getting the Most out of Life with Attention Deficit Disorder Answers to Distraction. Dr. Samenow's obvious lack of knowledge in this area as well as non-empirically supported views and poor understanding of the differential diagnosis of ADHD will only ensure that thousands of people in our jails and prisons challenged by ADHD will continue to be misdiagnosed and untreated which holds the promise of their rehabilitation. For example, according to the Harvard Medical Newsletter, Bi-polar disorder is the most common misdiagnosis for adults with ADHD and according to Dr's Hallowell and Ratey whose credibility far exceeds Dr. Samenow's, "Particularly in males with a history of violent behaviors, the kinds of people that fill jails and mental hospitals, one finds many who have a classic history of ADD/ADHD. Their violence is not due to a defect in their conscience or to psychosis or to some morbid familial conflict, but to the frustration intolerance and impulsivity of ADD/ADHD. Whey they are properly diagnosed and receive the appropriate treatment, often their course changes for the better". Indeed, I have seen in my own work, when accurately diagnaosed and properly treated, many such persons significantly and successfully initiate life-altering changes for the first time in their lives! 5 out of 5 stars Easy to read and very interesting.......2007-05-10

This book is an excellent read for anyone interested in criminology. It gives a tremendous amount of insight into the thought process of the criminal mind. Dr Samenow talks about the technique used by the late Dr Samuel Yochelson in his research-treatment program for criminal behavior. Dr Yochelson seemed to have been making some progress with those patients at that time.

I'm looking forward to reading some of Dr Samenow's other books.

4 out of 5 stars Angry, And Perhaps Rightly So.......2003-01-04

Dr. Neil Bernstein's useful work on the counseling of oppositional teenagers is noteworthy in its humility, for a start. Clinical success, in the author's view, is established the old fashioned way: you have to work for it. In his introduction Bernstein confesses to a basic distrust of quick fixes for teenage problems, particularly those promulgated on the lecture/workshop circuit. He keeps a balanced head on the etiology of oppositional defiance, recognizing that disorders of mood, substance abuse, and dysfunctional families of origin, to name a few factors, must be given their day in court during the diagnostic phase of treatment. He is well read in adolescent development and recognizes that the teen years are inherently about distancing and defiance, in some way, shape, or form.

If one were to label the author's clinical approach, perhaps the Rogerian style comes closest to capturing this practitioner's persona. Without losing sight of the nuts and bolts, Bernstein seems to find his success in establishing empathy and trust with his young clients. The "opposition" of teenagers is directed against the systems that they perceive as having failed them: family, school, and the peer community. The defensive attitude of such youth is both a mask for their pain and insurance against further hurt. It is encouraging to see that a lengthy chapter has been devoted to family intervention [though some family specialists will inevitably argue that the family organism is the whole enchilada where childhood disorders are concerned.]

Bernstein's clinical examples-and they are numerous-appear to be drawn primarily from individual therapy sessions, i.e., without parents or others in the process. If this reflects the demographics of his paying clientele, then he must have a remarkable gift for developing engagement with his young clients, and he would apparently have enough leisure to plumb his clients' psyches at a pace that does not engender defensiveness. But aside from the wearisome issue of whether managed health care or the client's own limited resources put limitations on a style that calls for protracted contact and trust building, the one nagging question left hanging in this work is the role of the parents in the client's treatment. In Chapter 12 the author provides a substantive commentary on family therapy, noting among other things that parents frequently repeat the mistakes of their own mothers and fathers, implying that many oppositional clients have plenty at home to be oppositional about. Is such therapy without the parents the clinical equivalent of rowing with one oar? I would summarize Bernstein's position on parental participation in therapy as "optimal but not necessary." As a practitioner myself, unless I have compelling reasons to the contrary, I subscribe to the philosophy of the seasoned general who brought a long time rival into his inner circle on the grounds that "I'd rather have him inside my tent [urinating] out than outside my tent [urinating] in." Somewhat surprising to me is the desire of many of my ODD clients to have a parent in therapy with them, perhaps their way of telling me why they are so angry.

In the final analysis, this is a work from the traditional psychoanalytic school that extols the time proven methods of human respect and client interaction. It is an excellent didactic exposition, an opportunity for a practitioner to ask himself, "Do I sound like that?" There is an abundance of common sense and a minimum of psycho-jargon that makes this work accessible to teachers and many parents as well.

5 out of 5 stars Treating the Unmanageable Adolescent.......2000-12-09

I've been working with difficult teenagers for over ten years and read this book hoping to gain new insights and skills into working with this population. By far, it is the best book I have ever read on this topic. It is explicit, practical, and offers numerous suggestions for addressing the multiple problems that this population faces. I have found it extremely useful in my practice because of the easily applicable techniques Dr. Bernstein presents, and his concrete suggestions about how to implement them. Dr. Bernstein shares many examples from his clinical practice which parents and clinicians alike should find helpful. Susan Gordon, Ph.D.

3 out of 5 stars an excellent guide to practical management.......1999-02-21

I was startled to read an earlier online review of this book becasue it was so much at varience with my own thoughts about Dr. Bersteins book. I am a psycholgist with a Ph.D. and 25 years experience working in clinical settings and I have never before encountered a book on conduct disorders that was so clearly the work of an experienced clinician and so deeply rooted in his experience. Bernstein's clinical examples could have come from my office or those of other psychologists I know and work with. His suggestions and illlustrations of his work with his patients was both reassuring and familiar as well as stimulating and provocative. If you chave to go out and work in the trenches with oppositional and conduct disordered, Dr. Bernstien's book is a very handy item to have along

1 out of 5 stars A disappointing cursory treatment of the disorder.......1998-09-19

I purchased Dr. Bernstein's book as part of some fact finding for my master's thesis in Special Education. I did not expect the book to have all the answers, but was hopeful that there would be a good body of information that would prove helpful.

I was very disappointed. I found the introductory chapters to be a cursory tratment of the disruptive disorders. Seldom was there a delineation between conduct problems and normal development. There was little information of how antisocial behavior differentiates from conduct disorder. There were many blanket statements that were not sufficiently supported with evidence. The case studies were one sided, and I believe, not fully representative of the intracies of the personalities of children.

I was particularly dismayed at the suggestion that the population of conduct disordered children was "likely to have a narrow range of interests" and spending a few minutes a week glancing through "People" and "Rolling Stone" was a sufficient way to be informed of their culture. The greatest disservice to these children is to take their minds for granted in such a way.

As for the information on the theraputic process and treatment, I did not find this helpful. Most of the principles discussed here are presented in a great book, "The Skilled Helper" by Gerard Egan. A book which takes a much more compassionate, humble approach to the helping process.

I had hopes for this book. I went into it with an open mind, willing to learn. I was bitterly disappointed with it's myopic approach to this population of special needs children and youth. I could not recommend it even as an introduction to the subject.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!.......2007-01-09

Leslie Godwin hits home in her book "From Burned out to Fired Up". The format is easy to follow and packed with advice, exercises and motivational thinking. It is not only helpful to me but also a recommended read to clients and friends.

5 out of 5 stars A book that easily catapults you into the next level!.......2005-04-16

I found Leslie's book accidentally a year ago in an airport bookstore. I had no idea what the book was about, only that I was burned out working in a small job in a toxic work environment. It was so inexpensive, I bought it. When I began to sift through it, I wondered how these little simple worksheets would be able to do anything like the cover promised - rekindling the passion.
I could not have been more wrong. Once I started reading the book, so simple in language, and did my first worksheet - I realized in just a few questions- deeper issues that I was unaware of that were driving my passion and also fueling my fear. I had a lifelong dream but was hiding out as a passionate workaholic in smaller jobs.
Leslie's book not only gently and simply will dig things out at the root but will inspire you to get up, take step by step, and will make sure that this time, you will do it with BALANCE.
This book is so incredibly healthy, and it has become my companion over the last year. The worksheets are a wonder (especially the Synergy Plan worksheet). I recommend making an electronic version and updating it as you progress (and you will progress through those steps with Leslie's help).
Because of this book, I left my old toxic workplace and opened my horizons to being on my path. I am now in a new position I love for the timebeing, have balance, and am pursuing my lifelong dream career in parallel. I carry the Synergy Plan Worksheet with me in my organizer and refer to it regularly to take the next steps. Step by step, this book will lead you there. It's worth every penny and more!

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing Book.......2005-04-11

Without a doubt this book has changed my life for the better. I have gone from deadend job to deadend job for the past 15 years now, but while reading this book it was like the fog finally lifted. I realized I needed to find the job I loved, not the job that simply paid the bills. Now I am on my way - finally. The exercises seem simple and I really didn't see how they would help me, but they did. They get right to the point and you discover things you didn't even know were an issue for you. I would reccommend this book to anyone who is in this situation.

5 out of 5 stars Warm & Energizing Antidote for Today's Busy Women .......2004-11-14

Leslie Godwin's advice will hit home for so many of today's women, and, I believe, inspire them all. With case studies, e-mails, and lessons from a variety of women of different ages and in different careers, Leslie shows how to deal with the burnout that so many of us experience in different phases of life. From parenting issues to workplace challenges, there are many parts of the book that may speak to you.

Her exercises and worksheets show you how to take action and point you in the right direction to find the path to your passion. Her insightful comments will make you stop and think about things that you may never have reflected on before, and get you to see things in a new and productive light.

I highly recommend this book, and am confident you will find it worth many times its price! This is a book to keep, savor, and refer to again and again as you reach for your goals, even as those goals change over time.

5 out of 5 stars Refueling for the depleted!.......2004-08-03

Before long you've lost sight of not only where you were headed, but why you were headed there. This fog of confusion is lifted after following just a few of the easy but profoundly helpful exercises Ms. Godwin offers to readers who want to feel refueled. Clarification and newfound energy will be your reward for reading this straightforward, and accessible read.

    Book Description

From leading authorities, this book traces the development of female aggression and violence from early childhood through adulthood. Cutting-edge theoretical perspectives are interwoven with longitudinal data that elucidate the trajectories of aggressive girls' relationships with peers, with later romantic partners, and with their own children. Key issues addressed include the predictors of social and physical aggression at different points in the lifespan, connections between being a victim and a perpetrator, and the interplay of biological and sociocultural processes in shaping aggression in girls. Concluding commentaries address intervention, prevention, juvenile justice, and related research and policy initiatives.

Jonathan Kellerman is best known as the author of a series of bestselling suspense novels starring psychologist sleuth Dr. Alex Delaware, but his nonliterary background is as a children's clinical psychologist. In Savage Spawn, inspired by the schoolyard shootings that took place in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and Springfield, Oregon, in 1998, he brings his training to bear on the question of how children can become cold-blooded killers. Kellerman has as much--perhaps more--to say about the broader issue of the nature of psychopathy, however, than he does about youth violence, though he does occasionally bring the two themes together. But Savage Spawn is essentially a hundred-page-plus op-ed piece rooted in Kellerman's belief that there are fundamentally bad people in the world and that the response to the perpetrators of violent acts such as the shooting at Jonesboro should be to "lock them up till they die." (Although published shortly after the multiple-death shooting in Littleton, Colorado, in 1999, the book was clearly written before this incident took place.) Readers may ultimately prefer more detailed considerations such as William Pollack's Real Boys or Lost Boys, by James Garbarino.

    Book Description

"Ethically and morally, kids are works in progress. Throw in psychopathy and you've got a soul that will never be complete."

In this powerful, disturbing book, bestselling author and noted child psychologist Jonathan Kellerman shines a penetrating light on antisocial youth--kids who kill without remorse--asserting that "psychopathic tendencies begin very early in life, as young as three, and they endure." Criticizing our quick impulse to blame violent movies or a "morally bankrupt" society, Kellerman convinces us that it is the kids themselves who need to be examined. Carefully.

How do children become cold-blooded killers? Kellerman warns that today's aggressive bully is tomorrow's Mafia don, cult leader, or genocidal dictator. Violently psychopathic youths possess an overriding need for power, control, and stimulation, and all display a complete lack of regard for the humanity of others. He examines the origins of psychopathy and the ever-shifting debate between nurture and nature, offering some controversial solutions to dealing with homicidal tendencies in children.

As timely as today's headlines, more gripping than fiction, Savage Spawn is a provocative look at the links between society and biology, children and violence. Kellerman's sobering message will remain with you long after the last page is turned.

I haven't read Kellerman's book -- just all the reviews, in an attempt to decide whether to take the time to do so. Thus the forced, relatively neutral score -- no room for deviation from the norm here!
I would add to the comments on psychopathy, sociopathy, and mental illness as mediating factors by recommending some enlightening and very accessible reading. Re: sorting out the psychopaths from others, Robert Hare, an internationally-renowned psychological researcher, has also written a book that anyone can read and understand: Without Conscience, the Psychopaths Among Us. It's his form of public service, I think. Over the years, Bob has described the vital distinctions between garden-variety sociopaths, people who wind up in jail or prison for various reasons, and the true psychopath -- who may not always live a 'marginal' life, engage in egregious violence, or end up in prison. His book makes clear how the psychopath is different from most people, although s/he sometimes tries to mimic the appearance of being like others, as camouflage. From murderers to white-collar criminals -- unless recognized, these people have the power to affect the lives of many others quite painfully.
...A quite different type from Andrew Vachss's Robin Hood-esque Burke, an ex-con whose deepest humane motivation springs from the drive to prevent or rescue child or adult victims from abuse. Saving himself, over and over again, in a way -- although he was never 'saved' like this himself.

In any event -- pick up Bob Hare's book. It will 'wise you up' quickly re: a whole different level of existence. And explore the world of Burke, as well -- Vachss's man who knows very clearly (via the 'street research' of his experiences) the difference between a 'criminal' and a psychopath. You'll get a sense of what J.K. may be exercised about --

    4 out of 5 stars Interesting Read........2006-06-14

I was living in Jonesboro, Arkansas when Andrew Golden & Mitchell Johnson opened fire at their middle school. It was like, this sort of thing isn't supposed to happen in MY town. And they were only 11 and 13 years old! This little book was written shortly after the shooting as a sort of venting mechanism and I was curious to read Dr. Kellerman's take on it all.

He's very blunt about the fact that some people are just evil (or psychopathic) and this evil (or psychopathy) can manifest itself as early as two years old. There's no way to cure this, but if it is caught early enough, it can be controlled and that's where the system is failing. It's very straight forward, but like I said, very ventful too. He explains why the system doesn't work and has lots of ideal ideas of how to fix it, but he admits the world is not an ideal place and over all, we do the best we can.

I'm a fan of Dr. Kellerman's novels and I did notice the germ of some characters in the case examples he cites here. Pretty scary stuff.

So, no, this little volume doesn't provide any earth shattering cure-alls, but it is refreshing to hear a professional admit that there are no simple answers. I found it very interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Did some of you actually READ the book?.......2005-08-16

From the flavor of some of the past reviews, I wonder if the reviewers bothered to read the whole book...and read it carefully. It appears that a couple might have just skimmed through and this is no way to give any piece of literature a worthwhile critique.

Yes, Kellerman is a bit sensationalistic in his wording but do you think Average Joe would read the book if it read like a research paper?
No, certain of Kellerman's Utopian suggestions are not feasible. He says so. I guess certain readers missed this.
No, Kellerman's book does not offer a wealth of solutions towards treating violent youth. Read the back cover. This publication was not intended to offer treatments. It is clear that the purpose of the book was to present both sides of the "nature vs. nurture" argument and then to show how both play a role in creating the "savage spawn". Kellerman's point is that the issue is not cut and dried and the solutions are not simple because the resources to help these kids, simply isn't available.

He does toss in some supposed remedies at the end but these are the type of commentary one often hears from laypeople who think that we can just apply "quick fixes" and voila no more violent children. He wants readers to know that these options are not viable. He clearly states, "This comprehensive approach remains, sadly, an ideal". He does state, rather emphatically, however, that behavior modification is the key and closes with this reminder.

I disagree that it was sensationalistic to comment on the "young guns" of the West and show how we as a society tend to glorify violence. We do. Pointing out that many of these famous gunslingers of the past were children when they began their killing spree was not to sensationalize. Kellerman clearly points out that we are mistaken in assuming that it is a "new thing" for youngsters to go on murderous rampages, and that we need only to look into our history to see this.

As an educator and counselor of young offenders, I found the this book interesting and enlightening. If one goes beyond the basic scope of the book and checks Kellerman's references, one will find that much research exists to support what he says.

I agree with his statement, "Boys will be boys but violent boys will be dangerous." It's a wake up call to America that as he states, "..if we catch antisocial kids early enough..they will be amenable to treatment". We need to stop ignoring the behavior and making excuses for it.

So...all in all, is the book worth a 5? Yes...if one realizes that Kellerman accomplished his objective of showing both sides of a nature/nurture argument. I do believe, however, that he leaves the readers a bit cold by not offering us at least some parting references to publications or institutions that offer more information as to treatment options.

5 out of 5 stars Seen it in my family.......2004-07-26

Do you have to shootup a school to ruin lives??
My greatgrandma's family around 1910, had a very large farm in our state, the kids grew up with a ton of money. The kids were idle, spoiled and spent all their inheritances on booze, and lavish partying hunting trips--ending in squalor later in life. When an older family member died, or passed his farm onto his caretakers, since family didn't want to get dirty with helping, the other family members would spy from the nearby hilltops with binoculars, seething with hatred. Funerals were nice times for family thieving trips where family antiques were stolen. My greataunt was buried in her mother's wedding dress, ending decades of fighting over it.
My grandparents were overly lax with their children, and allowed them to be very violent with each other. Grandma would sleep a lot and socialize, letting the children roam unsupervised. My mom was the oldest, and assumed a lot of responsibility. Her sibs were super-spoiled, and never grew up, always trying to extort their parents even in extreme old age.
My aunt's oldest boy, she spouted everywhere that he was a GENIUS, and never controlled him. He was spoiled, bullying & violent towards his sibs and us cousins. Occasionally, he would go too far, and his dad would beat him, but other than that, ignored or indulged. My aunt indulged all the kids and herself so much with goodies and junk-buying that the family was always in financial and health crisis. Dad ran off.
The violent cousin dominated the family, they lived in fear of him, he bullied the mom and sibs. We even think he sexually bullied his brother and sister, as there is a lot of rage and dysfunction. Still the mom spouts that he is a genius----even though he is now 43, chronically jobless, porn-addict, drugger, married to a pretty-coke-hound, has 4 female children, showered with the youngest girls until atleast age 7 (as reported by his sister), has custody of grandma and is cleaning her out while keeping her on happy pills. He did the exact same with his paternal grandma as well, charmed his family's way in with her, and liquidated the household and finances. We have reported it, but grandma's on so many happy pills, the authorities think she's fine.
While grandpa was alive, the protector of the $$, even though he was in his 90's, he was hit up repeatedly by his children and grifter grandkids. He would say no, but these same relatives would always be too busy to bring food or help out, but kept us from hiring extra help. The Drs said his cancer & diabetes was accelerated by malnutrition. The minute he was dead in his bed, they jumped in the car and tried to empty the bank accounts. Grandma was easy pickings.
I also live in an area where many Billy-Bobs are spoiled by their indulgent parents, and they are going through the exact same things, with the children becoming sociopathic and predatory, ranging from 20's-60's and still grifting, beating up wives, drugs, extorting parents.....

I do think predators are made by loving too much, not enough responsility, etc....and families have to be responsible enough to know when they can't handle a predator...for his own Lifelong sake as well as the family and sibs.....If you could save somebody's life by getting a Remedial alternative living arrangement, or remedial boarding school.....This stuff lasts FOREVER...

3 out of 5 stars Not about "troubled kids".......2002-09-15

This is not a book about troubled children in the usual sense of that phrase, meaning children who are who are angry, lonely and unhappy and who act on those feelings in destructive ways, such as getting into fights or taking drugs. This is about a much smaller group: children who are so psychologically damaged that they simply don't experience the normal range of human feelings. Troubled teens might hide their anxieties behind a facade of cool contempt for others; but for child psychopaths, Kellerman suggests, there's nothing behind the facade. They see other people not as fellow human beings, but as objects to be manipulated or dominated for their own ends.

Kellerman's most interesting hypothesis here is that such children have not been produced by a general decline in moral or social values; instead, he postulates that this psychological abnormality has probably occurred in a small percentage of the population of every human society that has existed. (This certainly would explain why the vast majority of children who are teased or bullied at school, or who watch violent movies and play violent computer games, etc., are nevertheless nice kids who grow into kind, decent adults.) The main difference now is that adolescent psychopaths on a killing spree have access to more sophisticated, efficient weapons than existed in the past.

As other reviewers have suggested, some of the interventions and remedies Kellerman suggests don't seem feasible. That doesn't necessarily mean he's wrong; it's possible that our only other option is to endure periodic school shootings (though that's certainly an upsetting thought). I do think Kellerman might have dwelt more on the question of diagnosis; he's good at describing his own (rare) encounters with child psychopaths and how they differed from his (much more numerous) encounters with troubled boys, but it's unclear whether someone with less experience, training and sensitivity would be able to see and articulate the distinction. Still, the distinction itself, as Kellerman delineates it, is persuasive; and it might at least keep educators and school psychologists from lumping every unpopular, unhappy kid who likes to play shooter games or set off bottle rockets (which is a whole lot of kids) in with mass murderers (which, despite the seeming frequency of school shootings, is a very small number of kids). In any case, this is interesting reading for anyone curious to know how evil arises in individual human beings.

    4 out of 5 stars Laura's Review.......2007-03-19

I was required to read this book for a college course, and am glad I was! Although this book was graphic and at times difficult to read emotionally, it conveys a powerful message, with data to back it up. Even if you are unsure of the statistical lingo, the authors do a wonderful job of clarifying and explaining the results of their study. This book is an excellent example of how severe the effects of animal cruelty can be and that changes in society are desperately needed.

5 out of 5 stars Animal Cruelty: Pathway to Violence Angainst People.......2007-03-10

This book by Linda Merz-Perez and Kathleen M. Heide provides for a valueable resource for animal avocates and people concerned with interperonal violence as well. I found this book to be very helpful in assisting me in my studies to understand the connection between animal cruelty and interpersonal violence. From theories as to why people commit such crimes to case studies, this book keeps you interested. Not only is it interesting but also educational. Many other resources regarding this subject are included in this book. They prove that cruelty to animals is a cause for concern and leads to the perpetuation and continuance of violent crimes against people. I recommend this book to everyone, especially parents and people involved in child care, so as to broaden the knowledge society has on the link between cruelty to animals and human violence in hopes of reducing the violent tendencies of our society. We owe it to ourselves, the animals, and each other to become more educated on problems in our society, such as interperonal violence and animal cruelty, and what we can do to help reduce these occurences in our population. This book should assist people in taking a step in the right direction. This book provides much insight and background for those already in the field of victim advocacy (whether they are human or animal victims.) It supports, with fact, what may be seen as only an opinion, therefore giving respect to the views of animal advocates like me. The background this book and its references have given me have provided me with more confidence to continue on in my crusade to help animal and human victims of violence.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for Social Services and Animal Welfare Professio.......2005-03-23

"This book is a must have for anyone working in or interested in the animal welfare or human services fields. Most of us already in these fields find our time to relax and enjoy a good book very limited or otherwise nonexistent, and may find writings related to our work to be very technical and mundane. Linda Merez-Perez and Kathleen Heide have combined years of experience to develop a very clear, concise, intriguing work on the link between animal cruelty and increased human violence in the pages of "Animal Cruelty: Pathway to violence against people". Within these pages you will find a wealth of knowledge spanning the history of the relationship between animal cruelty and human violence, the current state of this relationship, methods used to evaluate this relationship, case studies that will pull at your heart, and suggested avenues of approach to both further increase awareness of the correlation between animal cruelty and increased human violence, and steps that can be taken to reduce these instances. After reading this book I am compelled to purchase a copy for both our County Adult and Child Social Services Departments and the County Animal Control Administrator in hopes of building a combined relationship to combat both animal cruelty and human violence in our area."

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book full of educational research.......2005-03-22

This book is a great resource for anyone concerned with the field of animal welfare or anyone seeking to grasp a greater understanding of the link between animal abuse and human violence. By giving a clear concise definition of animal cruelty, and examples of various types of aggression and violence people engage in, the authors show the complex nature of the issue. The compilation of various studies conducted by credible animal welfare professionals provides a wide spread knowledge base for the reader to draw from. Due to the magnitude of facts from the studies, it is necessary to have a highlighter in hand while reading to note the crucial conclusions that can be drawn from the studies. The purpose of this book is clearly to make society aware of the link between animal cruelty and human violence. This book was one of the first works to broach this topic and because of the ability of these two authors to present the facts in a conclusive manor; my hope is that others will become more aware of the realities of the problems at hand.

5 out of 5 stars "Animal Cruelty ..." disturbing to read; highly informative.......2005-03-21

"Animal Cruelty Pathway to Violence against People" takes an in-depth look at the link between animal cruelty and violence against people.Starting with chapter one, this book gives the reader the background knowledge to be comfortable enough, even with no prior knowledge of the subject, to get through the rest of the book with ease of understanding. The book itself is not meant in any way to breeze through for leisure.Reading it takes a lot of energy (to absorb so much information some of it rather disturbing). I found a lot of the information unsettling and depressing, but of course understood the need for that. Some of the information given is difficult to grasp and understand at first, but the authors do not leave you with out detailed guidance and explanation. This book helped me greatly in participating in and performing in the class I read it for.
I came away empowered and highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a greater understanding of the mysteries of cruelty and violence. I know I will look to this book for information frequently. It is an invaluable resource.

      Book Description

A great deal has been learned about serious child and adolescent conduct problems, but their causes are still not well understood. This book brings together an international group of leading authorities to advance specific, testable hypotheses about the causes of conduct disorder and juvenile delinquency. Four general causal models are delineated: the social learning model, the developmental pathways model, an integrative antisocial propensity model, and an integrative ecological¿developmental model. Also provided are models focusing on specific aspects of the origins of conduct problems, including contextual, psychological, and biological influences. The authors present significant, original theoretical work and map out the kinds of further studies needed to confirm or disconfirm their new or revised hypotheses.
